SUMMER UPDATE
Summer is now fully upon us. Hot, dry
weather has become the norm so far. The
good news is that the City pools and spray
park are operating at full strength without a
problem. This spring, a leak in the piping at
the Lazy River was discovered and repaired.
That solved the problem of leaking water in
the river. Purchase a pass this year and enjoy
your two pools and spray park. Without your
support, we would not be able to maintain
these recreational features.
Budget Update – The good news is that
our budget projections are tracking in a
favorable way. We are continuing to keep
a close watch on revenue and expenses and
trimming costs wherever possible while
keeping services at their current levels.
Lake County Land Reutilization Corp
(LCLRC) – or better known as the “Land
Bank” has been very involved in the City of
Wickliffe since its inception. Under the
direction of Executive Director, John
Rogers, the group has been able to assist the
City in the demolition of several vacant and
abandoned properties. The main objectives of
the LCLRC are threefold:
1.) Acquire and consolidate vacant
parcels through purchase, donations, or
intergovernmental transfers from public
foreclosures.
2.) Clear title to land and prepare parcels for
transfer to a third party for redevelopment use.
3.) Prioritize land for disposition or reuse,
selling land to a third party. To date, the
LCLRC has been involved in demolition
or acquisition of 11 properties in the City.
The City is very grateful to the group for its
assistance in clearing the neighborhoods of
parcels that have become abandoned, vacated,
and neglected. We will continue to work with
LCLRC in the future to address these issues as
they arise.

Spinner’s Discount Tobacco & Beverage
Driving through Wickliffe, it would be
difficult to miss one of the bright spots on
Euclid Avenue. With fresh landscaping, an eyecatching yellow façade, and flags honoring the
U.S.A. and the U.S. Armed Forces, Spinner’s
Discount Tobacco & Beverage located
at 29726 Euclid Avenue since 2010, was
presented a Bright Spot Award in 2013.
Under the new ownership of the
Raguz Family since February 2016, this
establishment continues to thrive as a popular
retailer in the City. No strangers to the
business, the Raguz Family formerly owned
and operated JJ’s Beverage on Lakeland Blvd.
in Wickliffe for ten years prior to making the
decision to relocate and purchase the Euclid
Avenue property and business when David
Spinner announced his retirement.
Inside the spacious store, shoppers will
find a large selection of over 100 types of
beer, 75 of which are craft beers. For those
shopping for domestic or imported wine, over
100 varieties are available. A selection of
mixes, soft drinks, and snacks rounds out the
inventory. Imported and domestic cigars and
other tobacco products are available, including

Delinquent Property Taxes – Lake
County Treasurer Lorraine Fende has begun
a program to collect delinquent taxes owed
to the County, the School System, and the
City. These taxes are from parcels of land that
have not been collected on in many years,
some going back to 2007. These accounts
are now being collected by the Treasurer in
conjunction with Tax Ease Ohio, LLC, who
will be responsible for the collection. So far
this program has had a very positive effect
on the City of Wickliffe. The schools will
be receiving approximately $450,000 and
the City approximately $65,000. This is an
ongoing effort to motivate taxpayers to get
caught up financially and to avoid a costly and
lengthy foreclosure process. Although there is
no guarantee that future collections will bring
similar amounts as these, the help of Treasurer
Fende is much appreciated.
Summer Events – We are now halfway
through the summer and the City has been full
of activities. There are still many activities
planned for the remainder of the season in our
parks and around our City. For some great
outdoor fun, plan to attend the FEST being
held on Sunday August 7 on the grounds of
Borromeo Seminary and the Wickliffe I&A
Cleveland Challenge Cup of Bocce, which
will be held on August 26, 27, and 28 at their
picnic grounds. Both of these are free events
and open to the public.

Harry Coulby 1865-1929 ~ The Personal Side
by Kathy Suglia
Wickliffe Historical Society
Harry Coulby was married twice, although
he had no children. His first wife, Jane Eliza
Cottier, was born in the City of Peel on the
Isle of Man on October 6, 1848. Jane Eliza
was seventeen years older than Harry and
twice a widow. They met as neighbors while
living on Scovill Avenue and married on January 14, 1888 in New York City. Harry was 23
years old. During this marriage, they moved
about fifteen times, finally living in Lakewood
in a very large home that was built by Harry.
They divorced in June of 1910. Jane Eliza
died September 13, 1924 and is interred in a
beautiful mausoleum in Lakeview Cemetery.
Nine months after his divorce, Harry
married widow May Allen Scott, who had a
teenage son, on March 11, 1911. May Allen
was the widow of Dr. Zenophon Christmas
Scott. By all accounts, Harry and May were
very happy. In June of 1911, Harry purchased
53.682 acres of land in Wickliffe from Mr.
E. Hunt and engaged architect Frederick W.
Striebinger to build the most beautiful home in
Ohio. The estate would be called ‘Coulallenby’
to seal Harry and May Allen’s marriage. While
awaiting the completion of the mansion, they
lived at 1472 Ford Drive off of East Boulevard.
They moved into the mansion in 1913.
Sadly, May Allen died November 11, 1921
of heart failure at the age of 58. Services
were held at the mansion and she is interred
at Lakeview Cemetery at the Scott-Coulby
monument. She left her son, Kenneth I. Scott,
and his wife Lucy, who continued to live with
Harry for the next two years.

Harry Coulby and Jane Eliza Coulby
In December of 1928, Harry visited his
relatives, as usual, for the holidays in Claypole,
England. Harry’s plans called for him to stay
overnight in London and then sail to Kingston,
Jamaica. In Kingston, he was to meet friends and
wed Irene Davenport, his bride to be, of Clyde,
Ohio. Harry died on January 18, 1929, the day
before he was to sail. Harry’s remains were
interred in his beloved churchyard in Claypole.

The event features 96 bocce teams from

Michigan, Florida, Mississippi, California,

20’s from the Little Italy and Mayfield areas,
who also won in 2014! They will be returning to defend their title again along with the

Entertainment will run throughout the

Wickliffe Site
Being Improved
Why is there a grassy hill across the street
from SweetBerry Fresh Market? There is
a large sewer project in Cleveland and soil
is being moved to the Wickliffe site for
leveling of the current property. The project
is expected to take two years. The Wickliffe
property is currently sloped and the value and
marketability will be much improved for future
development, which will benefit both Wickliffe
and the owner. Because of the hill, you don’t
see or hear the trucks or equipment needed to
haul the soil. There is also a truck tire washing
machine in the back of the house to prevent soil
from traveling down Euclid Avenue.
City Balances
Budget for 2016
Good news! We have a balanced budget.
We have been making cuts and using more
efficient ways of providing services to our
residents. One example of this is that we have
surgically removed bad sections of concrete
and replaced them with new concrete to
preserve their longevity without the expense
and inconvenience of covering the streets with
asphalt or complete replacement. Income has
been somewhat better than expected. Also,
give out thanks to the residents for passing the
issue to move capital dollars into the general

A Community of Kindness
A final personal note. Wickliffe is well
established as a city. Sure we can and will
entertain more business with constant
changes. However, I think our city has far
more developmental possibilities going
forward as a community. The world as I see
it doesn’t need more cities, it needs more
communities where people are kind to one
another, helping each other as family. It would
be far better to replace hate and indifference
with love and caring. Here in Wickliffe we
can start a cascade of change to county, state,
our country and beyond. By working for this
goal, we would truly honor the brotherhood
of banners representing all the people that
worked and sacrificed and continue to
sacrifice to make this a free, safe, and caring
nation. Here in Wickliffe it starts.

Director’s Corner
Thank you to everyone who participated in our Summer Reading programs! I had such
a blast at our kick-off event, “Book It” Around Wickliffe. And I am looking forward to
our summer Ice Cream Social with the Erie Heights Brass Ensemble on August 16, 2016.
Thank you to the Friends of the Library for their sponsorship and to all the businesses and
individuals who donated prizes for our program. Your generous donations help make summer reading an amazing program.
I recently learned that there are six dimensions of wellness: occupational, physical,
social, intellectual, spiritual, and emotional. I believe the Library is a natural fit with the
social and intellectual dimensions. Continue your lifelong learning by grabbing a book in
the library or downloading an eBook through Overdrive. Attend one of our many programs
to learn something new and meet new friends and neighbors.

We’re in this Together
By Wickliffe Forever
By Dee Aufuldish
“It is not more bigness that should be our
goal. We must attempt, rather, to bring people
back to...the warmth of community, to the worth
of individual effort and responsibility...and of
individuals working together as a community,
to better their lives and their children’s future.”
Robert F. Kennedy
Looking back over the year, it is easy to
see that Wickliffe Forever is making strides!
Year One was full of new events and steps
to improve our community. One of our most
memorable moments was working with the
people of Wickliffe to start the Hometown
Heroes Banner Program. On May 23, 2016,
the first banner was raised. Euclid Avenue
began to look a little nicer — there was
electricity in the air. As out-of-towners lined
the streets during the Memorial Day parade,
they were able to get a glimpse of what it is
like to be part of such a great community. We
have always known that Wickliffe is special.
Let’s continue to take the steps in supporting
our City. Wickliffe - we’re in this together!
Wickliffe Forever Foundation Inc. is
currently working with city officials and learning
from other professional organizations such as
Heritage Ohio, Lakewood Alive, and University
Square. Our group is setting goals to empower,
promote, and build Wickliffe into a vibrant city
that welcomes visitors and new businesses.
Wickliffe Forever’s banner program is a
tribute to recognize and honor our residents
and immediate family members who are
currently serving or who have served our
country in the Armed Forces. To all of
the family members that helped make this
program possible by purchasing the banners
Wickliffe Scholarship
Foundation to continue awards
The Wickliffe Scholarship Foundation,
in its 31st year, is continuing to sponsor
the Victorian Tea this year on Saturday,
December 2 at Pine Ridge Country Club.
Tickets remain at $35.00 each and
invitations will go out in October. Anyone
wanting an invitation should contact Dee
Aufuldish at 440-944-4921. Or if you’d like
to work on the Tea in any capacity, let Dee
know. We have fun while doing good!
In addition, the foundation will sponsor
a Golf Outing on Friday, September 16, at
Powderhorn Golf Course in Madison. It is
a four-person scramble, starting at 1:00 pm
with a 5:00 pm dinner. Individual golfers are
$75.00 and a foursome is $300; steak dinner
only is $35.00. Any questions or to register,
contact Bob Aufuldish at 216-390-4660.
Twelve scholarships were awarded this
past year to 16 recipients, totaling $19,500.00.
We will introduce our 2016 recipients to you
along with their prospective colleges and
majors in the next Wickliffe Connection.
Your support of our fundraisers will help us
continue funding even more scholarships.
Foundation officers are Ray Sack, Dee
Aufuldish and Rick Zalecky. Trustees are Bob

learning skills most valuable to their success
The district’s technology curriculum has
been rewritten to ensure students can meet the
demands of technical and media literacy. The
elementary school technology curriculum was
strengthened last year to make sure that all
students receive technology instruction every
week beginning in kindergarten. At the middle
school, the STEM program emphasizes
technical literacy. At the high school, courses
such as Robotics, Google Docs, and Video
Game Design create opportunities for students
to strengthen their technical literacy.
The district has placed an emphasis
on information literacy as we are in the
process of aligning the literacy curriculum
from kindergarten through grade twelve.
Students will be participating in reading and
writing workshops to ensure their skills with
information literacy are strong.
Life Skills
Through the district’s Student Ten Year
Plan, we are emphasizing life skills. Students
are learning about skills necessary to be
successful in the world outside of schools.
Through the plan students have the opportunity
to hear from people from the community
about the skills needed to be successful.
Summer Lab 2016
May 27, 2016 marked the last regular school day for
students in the Wickliffe City School District and by
May 31, students were ready for the 2016 Summer Lab
program to begin. This year’s camp program centered
around the novel, The One and Only Ivan, by Katherine
Applegate. Each morning, students heard about Ivan’s
simple life through his perspective as Ms. Applegate
portrayed the story of a Gorilla’s journey from being
put on display at a sad, small mall display to being
transported to a beautiful, spacious zoo were Ivan had
room to roam and share his experiences with his friends. Students were led in art work, photography projects, dance, and reading extension activities on
a daily basis. The Wickliffe Public Library partnered with our program to offer students the
opportunity to engage in reader’s theater and book discussions. Students were given the chance
to interact with many animals during our two-week program as we had a gorgeous day at the
Cleveland MetroParks Zoo and as we welcomed Jungle Terry and his animal friends. Summer
Lab 2016 was a wonderful success once again and we look forward to the School Lab program
in the fall.

into the future. New courses in addition to the

students in being well prepared as learners.

Students go on visits to area businesses to

what skills employees need to be successful,
and beginning this school year, students will
participate in job shadowing experiences and
internships to learn about the skills they will
need to have to contribute to the workplace and
their community. Students in the Learn, Lead,
and Serve program will work in non-profit
organizations to receive experience in how the
non-profit sector works and how to contribute
to the greater good of the community.
A district goal is that our students actually
experience life outside of school and not
only “read about it, write about it, and think
about it.” We know that through the Student
Ten Year Plan and its activities our students
will develop the life skills they need to be
successful.
The Wickliffe City School District is
being responsive to the needs of our students
and this article captures some of what we are
doing to ensure our students’ success. Our
goal, very simply, is to partner with parents
and the community to produce graduates who
will be the learners, leaders, and the servers of
the future.

Literacy Partnership Between WMS and WES
Wickliffe Middle School and Wickliffe
Elementary School have partnered with the
intention of increasing K-8 students’ love for
reading. Seventeen WMS students served as
“Literacy Leaders” throughout the 2015-2016
school year; these students were nominated
by their teachers as a result of their passion
for reading and ability to serve as positive role
models for the district’s younger students.
Literacy Leaders traveled to Wickliffe
Elementary School on Friday, May 13th and
Monday, May 16th to serve as guest speakers
within kindergarten and first
grade classrooms; WMS
students spoke of their love
for reading with the younger
students, described their
growth as readers over the
course of the years and
shared a favorite book with
the little ones. The visits
were an incredibly special
time for all involved!
Special thanks go
out to all WMS students
who gave of their time to

PBIS Dodge
Ball Initiative,
Wickliffe
Middle School
On Friday, May 21st, Wickliffe Middle
School hosted its First Annual Dodge Ball
Tournament- a PBIS (Positive Behavior
Interventions and Supports) initiative.
The event, coordinated by WMS Student
Ambassadors, involved students in grades
5-8 earning “Blue Bucks” and using earnings
to “purchase” either participant or audience
member tickets. (“Blue Bucks” are earned as
students demonstrate respect, responsibility or
personal best- the school’s three core values.)
The event was a hit with both students
and teachers alike, as the top-performing
student team competed against staff members.
Congratulations to our student champions:
Nick Martinitis, Gianni LaPaglia, Michael
Mulroy, Evan Rypinski and Loudan Braun!
A very special thank you also goes out to our
courageous staff team: Mr. Macuga, Mrs.
McNulty, Mrs. Canganelli, Mr. Rovniak and
Mr. Phillips.
WMS staff members encourage all students
to begin earning Blue Bucks at the start of our
2016-2017 school year, as we look forward to
repeating the fun!

New Classes, New Opportunities for WHS
This fall brings exciting opportunities for Wickliffe High School students. Four courses will
offered as co-curricular, co-credit, co-taught classes.
Students will have the opportunity to earn dual elective credits in social studies and English
in 20th Century Genocide and Women’s Rights Movement. These are two new courses that
feature embedded project-based learning. Mr. Huebner and Mrs. Schultz will be teaching 20th
Century Genocide. Mr. Randau and Mrs. Markouc will be teaching Women’s Rights.
Our Yearbook and Journalism courses are also teaming up to offer a richer media experience
for the students. Mrs. Sharp and Mrs. Terhart will be taking the lead on the new offering.
And a brand new, service-based learning class will be offered called Learn, Lead, Serve.
The class will offer credit in social studies, English, and community service. Mrs. Schultz
and Mr. Motta will be working with students and community members to provide authentic
service.
The new courses are part of the Ten-Year plan and bring exciting new opportunities for the
Wickliffe Community.
WMS Ends the Year on a High Note
Wickliffe Middle School’s Music Department held the final concert of the 2015-2016
school year with performances by the band and choirs. Many thanks to the students, Mr.
Fatica, Mrs. Morris, Mrs. Graves, and Mrs. Forester for their hard work and dedication in
ensuring that the show always goes on!
Wickliffe Middle School held two events to celebrate the academic achievement, citizenship,
and leadership of our students. On the evening of May 18th parents and students gathered for our
Academic Awards Night for grades 5, 6, and 7. On the morning of May 26th we held the second
annual Awards and Promotion Ceremony for 8th grade students. Parents, family, and WMS
faculty came together to celebrate the 106 members of
the Wickliffe Middle School class of 2016 as they were
promoted to high school as the class of 2020. During
both ceremonies students were recognized for Academic
Excellence, Academic Achievement, leadership in the
school organizations, and model citizenship. Students
in the 8th grade also received an individual promotion
certification. Congratulations to all recipients on a
fantastic school year!
The school year concluded with each grade level
taking part in an activity day. Grade 5 students went
roller-skating, grade 6 bowling, and grades 7 and 8 to
a team picnic. The 8th graders were also congratulated
and clapped out by younger students, faculty, staff, and
parents. Have a wonderful summer!
