From the Director WSAA Board of Directors
Summer 2016 WSAA Board of Directors From the Director Teri Shine, Executive Director, WSAA Member Living in Northeast Ohio has been pretty historic in the last few weeks. It started with the UFC Heavyweight champ, Stipe Miocic. Next came the Lake Erie Monsters winning the Calder Cup, and the BIG ONE - the Cleveland Cavaliers becoming the 2016 NBA World Champions. Social media has personalized these events with Wickliffe alumni sharing their stories, photos, and excitement throughout all these sporting seasons. It’s a great feeling to be in a winning city, and for those alumni who have moved to other parts of the country, I know you share our joy. Tom Ansberry 1965 Susan Skufca Bell 1982 Jim Campbell 1982 Diane Cziraky Cerri 1977 This newsletter features many events that the WSAA has been involved in: Senior Awards Night, the Robert Smith Dedication Ceremony, Wickliffe High School Academic Challenge, the Wickliffe Family Resource Center, and Memory Lane treasures. Frank Foti and I picked this date to coincide with “That 70’s Reunion”. We will have shorter hours for the train rides and ice cream, so round up the family and come and enjoy a fun event. Bob Smith and I will be serving up the ice cream. The next WSAA Board meeting will be on Wednesday, July 27th at 6:45 pm in the Robert Smith Development Center (behind high school). Our next WSAA Board Meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 27th at 6:45 pm in the Robert Smith Development Center. Please join us and see our wonderful group in action and get involved. The 2016 WSAA Ice Cream Social & Train Rides will be held on Saturday, July 30th at Penitentiary Glen in Kirtland. This year it is being held on the same day as That 70’s Reunion. Join us and the Lake Shore Live Steamers from 1-3pm and take a ride on the Blue Devil Express. On a final note, we received two distinct stories about the origin of our little Blue Devil logo. The question of its origin was not meant to start an argument but to obtain history about the logo. Both stories are true from the perspective of the authors, so let us not dispute their authenticity but try to find evidence to solidify our history. Yes, this is a challenge for me, as the historian, so lend a hand and go through all your memorabilia and share with all the proud Blue Devil logos over the years. Achievement Hall of Fame Dinner and induction ceremony will be held at Pine Ridge Country Club on Thursday, August 25th at 6:00 pm. More information about how to purchase ticket will be available soon. Senior Awards Night 2016 By Jimmy Campbell On Wednesday, May 11th, 2016, the annual Senior Student Awards Night was held at Wickliffe High School. It has been a tenet of our mission from the creation of the WSAA to provide $1000 scholarships to graduating seniors of Wickliffe High School. Eligible scholarship candidates can attend a vocational program, technical school, two year or four-year institution. Once again, thank you for your continued support! Jimmy Campbell ‘82 Robert M. Smith Dedication Ceremony Over the past 12 years the WSAA has granted close to $45,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors and has hosted the reception following the awards ceremonies for the honorees, families, friends, faculty and administration. The Robert M. Smith Professional Development Center was dedicated on May 25, 2016. It is a multipurpose building located outside the high school between the gymnasium and the choir/band rooms. There are three meeting rooms available. Bob Smith was celebrated by his former colleagues, current and former Board of Education members, WSAA members and many friends. Congratulations Bob! It gives me great pleasure to announce the 2016 Wickliffe Schools Alumni Association Scholarship recipients as pictured: Marygrace Chylinski, Alyssa Johnson, Zachary Hopton, Jacob Skiba and Christopher Dorazio. The selection process is always difficult and challenging; this year we received over 20 applications. I would personally like to thank Teri DiMattia Shine and Mark Cline for an outstanding job in this year’s selection process. Bill Porter, Pete Wolfgram, Dave Tanski, Ken Ranallo, Greg Drenik, Bill Kendra, Tom Rosneck, Dan D'Amore, Skip Kowalski, Greg Nackley, Dave Sterlekar. These included several local tournaments and the Great Lakes Regional state tournament where they were the only team to defeat the eventual state champions. Wickliffe High School Academic Challenge By Pat Hintz Jewell Thank you to all of the alumni who donated to the team to make the trip to Nationals possible! Seven of the team members were able to make the trip free due to your generous help. We cannot tell how much it is appreciated! Dear Wickliffe Alum, Words cannot adequately convey the gratitude of the Wickliffe High School Academic Challenge Team. Your generous donations have made it possible for us to pay for the team registration fee, the bus fare, and the hotel for the whole team. All members are able to go for free! Not only does this supply the immediate need, your kindness and faith in our team has given them confidence, joy, and a connection to previous generations who have roamed these halls. It means so much to them. On Friday, June 10, team members Ryan Miller, Russ Horacek, Tim Zelina, Nick Stankus, Philip Greger, Hallee Bradac, and Rachel Erich joined other Ohio teams on the bus to Chicago where they competed in Saturday and Sunday. The competition is fierce to even be invited to this tournament, and 41 of the top teams in the nation arrived, many of them with experience at the national level. Our team took on every match with focus and joy, showing themselves to be formidable opponents. Although we did not make it to playoffs on our first trip, we kept our opponents to low scores, and came extremely close to winning matches against a couple of teams who finished in the top places at the end. If you were one of the anonymous donors – I hope that you see this message and sincerely know how much this means to us all. For those who gave us names, the students are preparing thank you notes for you that will be mailed upon our return. A thank you note is not enough to show our appreciation, but please know the depths of our gratitude. Our team not only showed tremendous breadth of knowledge (Thank you Wickliffe teachers!), but they showed great teamwork, sportsmanship, and camaraderie. They attended matches of other Ohio teams when we had the opportunity to cheer them on. A final accolade to pass on...on the bus ride home, the team members who did not graduate this year began making a list of topics they want to learn for next year, and ways to practice and prepare for then. Summer vacation will find them voluntarily learning new information, and they have asked for more practice time starting in the fall. Our Wickliffe team are an impressive group, and we can be very proud of them. Next year, we will be hosting a tournament sometime during the year. If any alumni are interested in reading questions for it, stay tuned to the alumni email and this newsletter for details as they become available. We will also have another Alumni Practice Night where you can practice against our team in order to help them prepare for Nationals. It was so much fun this year that we want to do it again. Stay tuned... Left to Right: Tim Zelina, Russ Horacek, Rachel Erich, Ryan Miller, Hallee Bradac, Pat Hintz Jewell, Advisor Nick Huebner, Nick Stankus, and Philip Greger The Wickliffe High School Academic Challenge team earned a spot at the National Tournament in Chicago by placing in the top five at every tournament this 4 PIONEERS 1817-1916 Wickliffe - Rich in History Although Cleveland was the Mecca for the pioneers, the farmers among them discovered the soil too sandy in the area of the present Public Square. William Jones, his wife, daughter and son-in-law (the Tarbells) had spent six weeks traveling from Haddam, Connecticut in two covered wagons. After finding Cleveland unsuitable for farming, they retraced their route on the Lake Trail (Euclid Avenue) and purchased land for $5.00 an acre on a knoll near the present Bishop Road. First they built a double log cabin for the two families, and then in 1820, William Jones built a house on Euclid Avenue. By Rose C. Koryta As Wickliffe approaches its bicentennial in 2017, Wickliffe’s early beginnings become a topic of conversations. In the next several newsletters, a few historical stories and facts will be added to get us all in the spirit. THE GROWTH OF WICKLIFFE The Area The original inhabitants of Northeastern Ohio were the Iroquois, Huron, Seneca and Erie Indian tribes. Wickliffe’s Middle School is located on the site that once was Indian Wigwam Land. Green Ridge Golf Course was Jones’ Woods and prior to that the land was an Indian burial ground. Around 1840, just as Lake County was being formed, the last of the original inhabitants died, devoured by wolves so the story goes. As with everything, once someone ventures into the unknown, many people follow. Names of other early families include White, Merrill, Arnold, Mosher, Taylor, Lloyd, Fuller and Eddy. Eighteen-twenty brought Wickliffe’s first “building boom” with the new residents building their homes and the Lloyd Tavern being built as a stagecoach stop on the Cleveland-PainesvilleUnionville run. Lake tempered air and good soil provided an ideal combination for nurseries and orchards. However, the sale of the land by the state of Connecticut to the Connecticut Land Company was under question for a short time, and prospective settlers waited for the legal reassurance that any land they bought from the Company would be really theirs. With this assurance, the trek to the “Western Reserve” began, and Moses Cleveland’s village at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River became the destination of most of the pioneers. Range 1, Parcel No. 9 of the Connecticut Land Company’s “ Western Reserve” was originally titled in the name of Charlton, changed to Chagrin in 1815 and later to Willoughby Township. Planners of the “Reserve” laid out the tracts to be almost square in shape and to cover approximately four square miles. To this day Wickliffe conforms to this original Western Reserve concept of the ideal size for a community. Continued on page #6 5 Wickliffe-Rich in History continued from Page #5 In 1885 Chester Rush opened a grocery store and Post Office. Rush had a partner named “Waite” and the sign over the door read “Rush and Waite”. In 1910 it became Mean’s grocery store and Town Bar after that. Bricks for the Tavern were made on the property; the window sills and doors were hand carved, and the front was built on felled trees. Over a century later, when the building was demolished, the bark was still intact on these “foundation” blocks. A ballroom occupied the second floor of the Tavern. It is interesting to note how liquor was sold in those pioneer times. It could not be sold by liquid measure; instead it was sold by the yard! Logs a yard long were whittled out to be used as the vessel of measurement. Everyone certainly could say that their liquor was “aged in the wood”. Uncle David Hutchinson operated the first post office in 1820 and kept the mail in a drawer of a washstand. Mail stagecoach service between Cleveland and Painesville made postal service possible. The trip from one terminus to the other took eighteen hours. One of the first names for the settlement was Mosesville after two bachelor brothers who had a sawmill. It wasn’t until the 1840’s, under President Tyler, that an official post office was established in the settlement, and it was named after President Tyler’s Postmaster General, Charles Wickliffe. The first official Wickliffe Postmaster was Silas A. Vorce who took office July 3, 1843. Wickliffe Celebrates Bicentennial in 2017 By Dave Krych If you are interested in helping with the Bicentennial plans, the committee meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Senior Community Center on Worden Rd. Please contact David Krych at [email protected]. Another contact with surrounding communities was a plank road which extended from Euclid Village to Bishop Road and was one of the first toll roads in the area, operating until 1897. Possibly the extension of the interurban lines to Willoughby in 1895 and Painesville in 1896 caused the demise of the toll road. Interurban riders even had a parking lot for their horses behind the Rush and Waite general store. For a set fee, the horses were watered and fed while their owners used more mechanized means of transportation. The City of Wickliffe will be celebrating its Bicentennial July 15, 2017 with the possibility of other dates added. Dave Krych, WSAA board member and Wickliffe Council President, is looking for any old photos of Euclid Avenue to display for their event. The pictures would be greatly appreciated; please send them to Dave today. 6 Memory Lane Treasures By Teri Shine The Blue Blaze adopted its new masthead in the February 10, 1967 issue. The masthead incorporated the devil designed in 1967 for the class rings. The Blue Blaze thanked “Don Baur, Ralph Birnbaum and Mr. Stocker for their efforts and talents in bring this idea into reality.” Join the Wickliffe Schools Alumni Association group Facebook page today. It was guest conducted by its composer, Dr. Paul Whear. “Dr. Whear became interested in Wickliffe while traveling in England, where he studied John Wycliffe, a 14th century church reformer, and became curious as to the connection between the names. The composition is a variation on a melody of an 18th century hymn.” Please email [email protected] to submit trivia questions or suggestions for ideas on our Facebook page. If you submit trivia questions, please include your name, graduation year, and the answers (if you know them). Fun fact from the 1934 Wickliffe High School Yearbook The High School Band was first organized in 1925 with sixteen, boy only, members. Girls were permitted to join a few years later. The 1934 Wickliffe School Band consisted of 6 clarinets, 1 oboe, 7 cornets, 1 trombone, 5 saxophones, 1 baritone, 1 alto, 2 tubas, 2 sousaphones, 2 trap drums, 1 bass drum, and 1 cymbal. The band consisted of 19 boys and 11girls. 7 I have learned that you are never too old to try something new. I didn’t even start singing until I was in my 50’s. I only wish I would have started in my younger days because I am having so much fun and meeting so many new people. Now I enjoy singing every chance I get, so don’t limit yourself no matter how old you are. We hope to see you on July 30th at “That 70’s Reunion”! We’re Never Too Old To Try Something New By Darlene Franczek Harting Ties That Bind – Elementary Faculty & Staff Stay Connected By Phyllis Sevin Time sure passes by quickly! It is hard to believe my 40th high school reunion is around the corner. Speaking of reunions, I wanted to share how excited I am that my acoustic duo, Flashbaxx, will be performing some of our songs at “That 70’s Reunion” on July 30th. I will be on vocals, and the other part of the duo, Bill Rebol, will be on guitar, harmonica, and vocals. While you are visiting and catching up with classmates, we hope that you also stop and listen to catch up with some other old favorites like Stevie Nicks, Bob Dylan, the Everly Brothers, Johnny Cash, and much more. Since it is a 70’s reunion, we will bringing you back to that era’s popular tunes. Many retired teachers and staff from Wickliffe Elementary School continue the friendships they formed during their careers. Four times a year retired members of the teaching and nonteaching staff gather for lunch at area restaurants. During these times, stories filled with laughter, and sometimes sadness, are shared amongst the retirees. Reminiscing about the "good old days" and shared experiences is a common denominator of these lively luncheons. Everyone looks forward to seeing one another to catch up on stories about families, vacations, adventures, or just to share a good book. One thing is always assured – we still enjoy one another's company! We will have our promotional materials and upcoming events available in case you want to join us at one of our gigs…which might just turn into a mini-WHS reunion at the same time; wouldn’t that be fun! Check out our website at www.flashbaxx.net If you are interested in contacting a retired staff member, please email Phyllis Sevin at [email protected] for information on how to connect with former teachers or faculty from Wickliffe (Lincoln) Elementary. 8 consumer brands, including many of the Fortune 100 business-to-business companies successful. The evening starts at 6:30 p.m. with dinner served at 7 p.m. The inductions will take place immediately after dinner. Thomas Mark Foss (Class of 1977) “The committee for the Achievement Hall of Fame reviews nominations submitted through the web site or delivered to us for consideration. We received very strong submissions this year and it wasn’t easy to get down to our five recipients,” said WSAA Chairman, Dave Hintz. “Ultimately, the 2016 inductees should make all alumni proud of being from Wickliffe.” Tom has been a community volunteer for nearly 40 years. He’s lived in Wickliffe his entire life and has been a volunteer in organizations such as the Knights of Columbus, American Legion and Wickliffe City Club. His accomplishments include 20 years of raising money for veterans’ causes, securing and delivering gifts and funds to needy families during the holidays and beyond, and quietly uses his own van to take elderly and disabled members of the community to church each Sunday over many years. He does all of this without fanfare or by seeking attention in any way. He’s worked at Mayfran in Mayfield Heights for 26 years. Here are the 2016 inductees: William Reid (Class of 1960) Bill worked for more than 50 years in service of the City of Wickliffe in all phases of government and employment. Starting as a park/camp counselor he worked his way up to serve as mayor and safety director serving three terms (1979 – 1985). In between and after, he served as councilman at large, city council president and councilman. He also was hired as the Tax Commissioner ‘Deputy Finance Director, a position he held until his retirement in 2001. Bill’s community work included involvement with the Wickliffe Jaycees, Lake Country Junior Olympics, Environmental Commission, Library Foundation Board and has donated over 250 pints of rare AB blood to the Red Cross over 50 years. Charles Frank (Faculty) Chuck was the high school band director from 1959 to 1972. He built the Blue Devil Marching Band into a phenomenon that garnered regional and state recognition that still lasts today. He formulated the now-famous Aquarius halftime routine in 1970 and it’s still a main staple of the band’s performances. He directed the Concert Band/Wind Ensemble that completed and received Superior ratings. Chuck organized the Lakeland Civic Orchestra, Lakeland Civic Jazz Band and Summer Jazz Camp. He was an executive director of the Willoughby School of Fine Arts, director of the Madison Fine Arts, past president of the Lake County Music Educators Andy Chiodo (Class of 1963) Andy’s career as a marketing manager, advertising agency principal and independent consultant has seen him help make over 60 of the top 100 Continued on page #10 9 Achievement Hall of Fame continued from Page #9 and served on the Arts & Culture Commission. He was inducted into the Wickliffe Community Hall of Fame in 2004 and continues to teach at Lakeland Community College. Robert Smith (Faculty) Bob joined the Wickliffe City Schools in 1973 and served throughout the system until his retirement in 2008. His career began as a biology teacher and he went on to become assistant principal, principal and then arguably, the most popular superintendent the school system has ever had. He was also a dedicated football coach and wrestling coach during his time at the schools. Bob was one of the founders and performers of the high school talent show, starting at its inception in 1978 until his retirement. Anyone around at the time tells stories of Bob, as superintendent, being outside each day as the busses dropped off and picked up the kids at the schools, regardless of the weather. He was instrumental in founding the WSAA in 2004 as he pitched it to several alumni and got the group together to form the chapter. Wickliffe’s Family Resource Center Wickliffe City Schools in partnership with local and regional businesses, non-profits, and community organizations is planning the creation of a Family Resource Center. The key to a successful community is having strong, healthy families that have the opportunity to provide their children with a great educational environment and well-founded public services. The Family Resource Center will support community success by providing educational and enrichment services, health care services, and social and counseling services. The plan will build alliances and partnerships that will ensure the Center’s sustainability well into the future. Wickliffe’s plan to reinvent public education in the city has a broad range of stakeholders and support of the superintendent, the Board of Education, the mayor, city and state governments, leaders in business, and civic organizations.
