Many thanks to those who
attended our annual Super
Bowl Basket Raffle this
year. Your donations and
participation made this
event a success. Funds
raised will allow us to continue awarding scholarships to deserving Wickliffe students. It takes
months of preparation to plan and make this event
great. Sue Skufca Bell and her family had all the
baskets in their home during this process, and we
thank them for their dedication and tolerance. We
will be looking for a new place to store baskets and
items for the 2016 raffle. Please contact a board
member if you are able to assist us. We did receive
much feedback on how to improve the event. The
board of directors will do what it can to implement
some of those ideas.

The 2015 Annual
Super Bowl Basket Raffle
The 2015 Annual Super Bowl Basket Raffle was
held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel again this
year. The icy roads and cold did not keep people away. Tickets went on sale in November
and sold out shortly afterward. Sue Skufca Bell
and Lori Ondecko coordinated the event and
festivities. There were over 150 baskets ranging in value from $25 to $700 including big
ticket items such as a fireplace, HP laptop,
Kitchen Aid mixer, His/Her Fit Bits, and a
week’s stay at Cancun condo
Thank you to the our alumni volunteers: Susan
Urankar, Lu Ann Zibert, Donna Mikulandra,
Karla Lindsey, Irvin Taylor, Gregg Putzbach,
Carla Vesel Licastro, Dave Krych, Diane Cerri,
Rich Wilson, and Jodi Yurkovich. Board Members: Teri Shine, Dave Hintz, Nancy Perlic,
Jimmy Campbell, Mark Cline, Roger Mikulandra, and Deb Vitantonio. Non-alumni volunteers: Ken Bell, Al Zibert, Sam Wilson, Kathy
Shine, Patty Wilson, and Ken Perlic. There
were many student volunteers from Wickliffe
High School and also children of alumni volunteers. The students received community service volunteer hours for their efforts.
The success of this fundraising event has allowed the WSAA to increase our scholarships
from $500 to $1000. We have also increased
the number of scholarships given to six. The
scholarship is open to all Wickliffe graduating
seniors. The application is located at the Wickliffe High School website or available from the
WHS guidance counselor. Two scholarships
are awarded to students attending a 4 year
college, two scholarships are awarded to students attending a 2 year college, and two
scholarships are awarded to students attending
a technical or vocational school.

Memories from the 1957 Yearbook
By Teri Shine
The Class of 1957 graduated from the High
School on Euclid Avenue. Their yearbook was
dedicated to Paul Muschella, their science and
mathematics teacher. The Superintendent was
C.H. Michel and their principal was J. Kraps. As
a student, I never gave much thought to where
my teachers went to college. As a parent and
an advocate for lifelong learning, I thought it
might be fun to see where the teachers for the
Class of 1957 were educated. There were 25
teachers and seven of those also had their Masters Degrees. Undergraduate degrees were obtained from Ohio Wesleyan (3), Ohio University
(4), Heidelberg, Western Reserve University (2),
California State Teachers’ College, Hiram,
Bowling Green, Findlay, Kent State (2), Wooster, Miami, Ursuline, Baldwin Wallace, Indiana
State College, Illinois College, Dana’s Musical
Institute, Indiana State Teachers College, and
Central Michigan. Masters Degrees were
awarded from Columbia, Western Reserve University (3), University of Pittsburgh, and Kent
State (2). The superintendent and principal
were both Masters prepared with their education
from Ohio Wesleyan, Columbia, and Ohio Universities.

Consider donating or loaning them to the WSAA to

WSAA events at the high school, or by special appointment.
Wickliffe Schools include Lincoln Elementary, Mapledale Elementary, Worden Elementary, Wickliffe
Junior High School, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School,

High School. You did not have to graduate from
Wickliffe to be a WSAA member. You just needed
to attend one of the above schools in your lifetime.
Please contact Teri Shine @ [email protected]
or call 440-666-9306 for more information or to
make arrangements for drop off. You can also
leave donated items in the high school office and

man was known and loved both in educational circles
and in a social way. He had been Superintendent of
Wickliffe Schools for five years and was principal of the
high school there for two more years. He came to
Wickliffe from Bedford where he was a schoolman for
twelve years. ... In Wickliffe, on every hand,
exclamations of sorrow at his untimely death were
heard. He was unusually active in civic affairs and in
anything which concerned the welfare of the
village...Afterwards (after the funeral,) school was
dismissed for the day as a mark of respect. ‘He was a
public man of great understanding, who had given his
life for his work. He will be greatly missed,’ said R.J. Little (acting school superintendent.) He was one of the
senior elders of the Presbyterian Church and was on the
board of directors of the Wickliffe Health Center. He was
a director in the Wickliffe Improvement Co. The county
joins with Wickliffe in expressing sympathy to the bereaved.” From the Painesville Telegraph, May 1925.
Wickliffe’s Founding Father
of Education — LeRoy Heavilin
By Rich Benz
When did the Wickliffe Schools really become the Wickliffe Schools? Well, they started out as The Wickliffe
School, a part of the Willoughby Rural School district.
Eventually this little community got a new school— The
Wickliffe Senior and Junior High School and in 1919 its
own identity —The Wickliffe Village Schools. The first
high school principal and school superintendent was Mr.
LeRoy Heavilin, grandfather of retired elementary first
grade teacher, Mrs. Benz (formerly Mrs. Harlan.) Mr.
Heavily was recently inducted into the Wickliffe Community Hall of Fame as Wickliffe’s founding Father of Education. Here is his story —
LeRoy Heavilin was born 1884 in Archer Twp., Harrison
Co., Ohio, and died 1925 in Wickliffe, Ohio. During this
short 41 year life, LeRoy accomplished quite a lot. One
of ten children born to a sheep farmer in Harrison
county, he entered Ohio Wesleyan in 1907 and graduated with a major in education from Mount Union College. He became a Manual Training teacher in the Bedford School district upon graduation. (The Manual Training movement was the precursor to the vocational training programs in our schools today.) In 1918 Mr. LeRoy
Heavilin became the first Superintendent and Principal of
the newly formed Wickliffe Senior and Junior High
School which was a part of the Willoughby Rural School
District. He was also the school’s Manual Training teacher. The Wickliffe Village Schools were formed in 1919
and LeRoy Heavilin was named the first Principal of the
Senior and Junior High School (the current Middle
School,) as well as the district’s Superintendent. By 1924
Leroy Heavilin continued as Wickliffe’s first Superintendent of the newly formed Wickliffe Village Schools while
still maintaining his classroom duties as the high school
Manual Training instructor. In 1924 he presided over the
first Wickliffe High School graduation class of three students. The next year LeRoy died while still serving as
the superintendent, and Manual Training teacher. An
article written in a local paper describes the “Universal
Sorrow” that resulted from his untimely passing
A small memorial plaque that reads “In Memory of
LeRoy Heavilin Supt. of Wickliffe Schools 1918-1925”
rested below a tree in the side yard of the Lincoln
Elementary (now Wickliffe Elementary School,) for many
years. The Heavilin legacy lived on for many years after
LeRoy’s passing. His wife, Blanche Heavilin taught elementary school( 4th grade and substitute,) for a number
of years after his death and his granddaughter, Betsy
(Heavilin) Benz taught first grade from 1986 until she
retired in 2008. For many years Betsy lived in the same
house that LeRoy built and lived in on Maple Street while he was Superintendent.
LeRoy Heavilin--an education pioneer for the newly
emerging Village of Wickliffe school system. LeRoy
Heavilin, truly a Founding Farther of Wickliffe Education!
“The joys of the coming summer vacation were spoiled
for the pupils of the Wickliffe Schools and many friends
were saddened to hear of the untimely death of LeRoy
Heavilin, 41, at his former home in Wickliffe Saturday,
May 28. ... Sympathy for the bereaved widow and the
citizens of Wickliffe has been county wide, as the dead

your classmates and those who graduated ahead of
or after you. Please contact your WHS classmates
who graduated in the 1960s. Encourage them to

our 73rd reunion. Our last two passed away
within the year, and now there’s only the
four of us. Gloria (Pinto) Nerone, Mary
(Ciancibello) D’Agustine, Jo (Witz) Kausck,
and Gloria (Caruso) Nadolski. Also attending
were Ann Carroscia; Georgia Saxby, widow
of our classmate Douglas Saxby; Cynthia
Bishop, driver, and Ann’s friend.
The Class of 1958 is holding a WEST COAST

February 20, 2015 at 440-391-1823. Spread
the word to other Wickliffe High Graduates
We all had a nice lunch and gabbed on and
on. We took time out to offer prayers for
our deceased classmates with our iced tea.
It was a very rewarding day.
Class of 1941 72nd Reunion
By Gloria Nadolski
We also got together between the two reunions at Ann Carroscia’s home for lunch. The
four girls, Gloria, Mary, Jo, and Gloria along
with Cynthia as our driver.
On May 15, 2013, our Class of 1941 had a
very small reunion. It was our 72nd one. Our
class had only 34 students-and now it was 6; 4
girls & 2 boys left. The two boys were Robert
Malin and Henry Sokolowski. The girls that attended (and I use “girls” lightly) were Mary
(Ciancibello) D’Agustine, Gloria (Pinto) Nerone,
Josephine (Witz) Kausck, and Gloria (Caruso)
Nadolski. Ann Carroscia, the widow of our
classmate Charlie Carroscia, and Lyola
(Vitantonio) Puin, class of ’39 attended also.
Reunion Announcements &
Commentary Welcomed
We would love to help get the word out for
your reunions! Write up an announcement or
“save the date” and we will publish the information for you. Give us the place, date, time
and any other information you would like your
classmates to know. Never had a reunion?
Step up and organize one yourself. It’s easy
with our help. We can get the word out for
volunteers to help you form a committee.
We had lunch at Gloria Nadolski’s home and all
had brought wonderful food. After lunch, Gloria showed the video of our 1941 Baccalaureate Sunday and of our 50th Class Reunion night
and the breakfast the next day. Two of our
teachers attended that reunion and breakfastMiss Catherine Donaldson and Mary Ryder. To
end a wonderful day, we ended up with Josephine’s great chocolate cake.
If you had a great reunion, share the information with us by sending us a re-cap and pictures.
