President’s Message
Happy holidays to everyone. Hope you enjoyed a great Thanksgiving, are enjoying this early Chanukah and are
looking forward to a festive Christmas. We wrap up our year long before New Year’s, so if we don’t see you at the
next event, we hope you end the year on a good note and are looking forward to seeing you next year.
Our December is typically not very outwardly busy – just a single luncheon. This year’s wrap-up lunch is Thursday,
December 12th at Maggiano’s in Tysons from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. After that, we just work behind the scenes to
transition board committees, knowledge, and volunteers from one committee to another. We’re also finalizing plans
for the first few meetings of 2014.
This December’s lunch meeting, featuring local tax lawyer John Dedon presenting a “Year End Tax Planning
Update,” includes our annual election of the 2014 FPA-NCA board along with a big thank you to our volunteers –
this is also our volunteer appreciation day for the chapter. With that in mind, we are going to have volunteer signup posters at the event. NexGen members have indicated a desire to volunteer, and several will be coming to the event
just to sign up for FPA-NCA committees. We will also have a gift for each Attendee at this meeting to express our
appreciation for all that our members do to help our chapter, our pro bono events and our many activities throughout
the year.
And while we’re on my favorite topic – integrating the next generation of planners firmly into our chapter and our
businesses – we are thrilled to share some November news with you. The national FPA NexGen membership has
elected as its 2014 President-elect our own board member, Laurie Belew. Congratulations to Laurie! She takes her
role of inspiring the next generation of planners seriously, and has driven our chapter’s NexGen programs to be
among the best in the country. Laurie has encouraged the chapter to be both inclusive and supportive of NexGen’s
membership. She brought innovative ideas to our National Capital Area Board, including February’s Career Fair. We
look forward to seeing Laurie’s growth on the national stage.

If you have not already, remember to register for our Winter Symposium by December 15 in order to receive the
early bird price for this terrific event. Our Chair, Rita Cheng, has lined up a great program for this event. Please see the
schedule for the day in this Newsletter. We anticipate that we will have 6 CE approved, plus our 2 CE for the Ethics
Course. Don’t miss your chance to knock out a great portion of your required credits, while still finding time to network
with colleagues and engage with our sponsors.
As mentioned above, we are excited to announce our inaugural Career Day on February 21, 2014. Look for the flyer
later in this newsletter (along with Peggy’s dozens of emails to come – I promise), and register early for this event.
Several chapters have been successful in integrating a career fair. We will have interviewing firms, job seekers seeking
full- and part-time employment and internships, and we will have a wonderful professional development program over
lunch with networking and speakers. You will not want to miss this day packed with opportunities! More importantly, it
is a chance for our chapter to establish something meaningful for the profession. Please consider coming out to
interview a CFP-candidate from one of the nearly two dozen programs we’ve reached out to.
Our 2014 calendar will be available soon. For the regulars, we look forward to seeing you each month. If you didn’t
attend an event in 2013, please try to join us for one event in 2014 – we would love to spend some time with you.
We wish you a wonderful holiday season and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year! Thanks for taking a few
minutes to read this note. As always, if you have any questions, concerns, suggestions, or just want to say hi, please feel
free to reach out to me or any of my fellow board members. All of our contact info is on the last page of the newsletter,
every month, and our new Board info for 2014 will be posted in January. Looking forward to seeing you at one of our
events.
Best regards,
Ryan M. Fleming, CFP®

future with traditional planning tools, including Trusts (dynasty trusts, intentionally defective trusts, grantor retained
annuity trusts), LLC and partnership entities, and cutting edge concepts such as cryonic preservation trusts. John also

Organizations, and Churches.

accountants, lawyers, financial planners, and the public. He is also the author of the blog, Dedon on Estate Planning,
a regularly updated discussion of estate planning topics affecting Virginia residents and U.S. citizens.
FPA NCA Communities of Learning
FPA Connect, FPA’s new social platform allows members to share best practices and expertise. FPA NCA
recognizes that some members may be interested in study groups or “communities of learning” to further develop
their financial planning expertise in different topic areas. FPA NCA would like to encourage anyone who is
interested in either facilitating or joining a community of learning to email Rita Cheng at
[email protected]. Some suggested communities of learning are divorce planning, special
needs planning, planning for same sex couples, just to name a few. We are certainly open to additional suggestions
and ideas.

FPA NCA Receives National Recognitions for Outstanding Achievements
FPA National recognizes chapters that meet specified criteria of achievement through the Roadmap to Success. This
program contains two parts— Roadmap to Success and Outstanding Achievement Awards. The Roadmap to Success
is based on basic standards that have been identified as benchmarks of successful chapters. The Outstanding
Achievement Awards are selected from several chapter operational areas.
Outstanding Achievement Awards
FPA NCA Chapter Leaders submit an application of Outstanding Achievement Awards every year. Awards are
geared for chapters with over 250 members and chapters with under 250 members. This year FPA NCA received two
Outstanding Achievement Awards. In 2013 no other chapter received two of these nationally recognized awards.
2013 Outstanding Achievement Award for Membership
FPA NCA has three Outstanding member Awards which have become respected and somewhat coveted awards for
members. The award is the highest form of professional peer recognition in the chapter and members are truly
honored to be selected.
This program began in 2001 and nominations are open to all members. In late winter, the chapter begins to publicize
the nomination period in the online newsletter, at meetings and symposia and members are allowed to nominate and
vote for themselves or other members. A nominating committee is formed with the president-elect traditionally being
the chairperson and he or she recruits a blend of newer and older past presidents for the committee. The chapter has
developed three award categories:
1. Financial planner of the year
2. Norma Severns Award for Leadership (formerly Outstanding Service)
3. Life time Achievement Award
2013 Outstanding Achievement Award for Other
The second Outstanding Achievement Award was for the 20th anniversary of the Annual Charity Golf Event. This
year the chapter worked with the Foundation of Financial Planning (the Foundation) to capture best practices from
the golf event, so the Foundation could pass the best practices on to other chapters. The event raised $16, 275 for
charitable beneficiaries, which by leveraging the TD Ameritrade matching pledge to the Foundation, resulted in a
total charitable benefit of $29, 295. FPA NCA handled all duties related to the event, including sponsorship
requirements, and prospecting for and collecting sponsorships (both in dollars and gift and raffle items). The chapter
promotes the tournament and the Foundation via the chapter newsletter, blast emails, chapter website, chapter blog
posts, chapter social media accounts, and in-meeting reminders at chapter functions. The chapter has created a
sponsor acknowledgement pack to thank and promote those that assist with the tournament.
With the chapter’s assistance, the Foundation was able to create a manual for a Charity Golf event that can be shared
with other chapters striving to accomplish the same goal.

TAXATION INTERVIEW PROGRAM 2014
Georgetown Law is again partnering with New York University School of Law to sponsor the nation's premier
recruitment program for graduate tax students, the Taxation Interview Program (TIP). TIP enables private and
public sector employers to interview, on one day (March 7, 2014) and in one place (Embassy Suites Hotel,
Washington, D.C.), current LL.M. in Taxation students from Georgetown Law and NYU Law. Georgetown Law
students pursuing a Certificate in Estate Planning, together with an LL.M. in Taxation, will also participate in
TIP.
Since 2001, top law firms, government agencies, corporations, and major accounting firms from across the
country have participated in the Taxation Interview Program. Employers can pre-screen candidates for
interviews, and they can also participate in TIP through a resume collection option.
Georgetown Law cordially invites you and your organization to participate in TIP 2014. If you are not involved
in hiring at your organization, please feel free to pass this message along to the hiring department. For further
information about TIP, please view the TIP brochure [http://www.law.georgetown.edu/academics/academicprograms/graduate-programs/careers/recruitment/taxation-interview-program/upload/TIP-2014-Brochure.pdf]
and visit the TIP website [http://www.law.georgetown.edu/graduate/TIP]. Employer registration is available
online and will remain open until January 29, 2014.

Author Submission Guidelines for Monthly Newsletter
A New Member Benefit -Get Published!
The Financial Planning Association, National Capital Area (FPA NCA) welcomes original, advanced papers on any aspect
of financial planning, whether research-based or conceptual in nature. For an article to qualify for submission the author
must be an FPA NCA member. Members are limited to one published article per year. Article submission guidelines follow
and are based on the FPA National Web site procedures located at www.fpanet.org. (FPA NCA Sponsor Partners may also
submit articles for our Newsletter, to be reviewed under Sponsorship Guidelines.)
Composition Approach
Audience
Keep our readers—primarily experienced financial planning professionals—in mind as you write. Provide timely, practical
material that applies to, or will directly benefit, financial planners in their work. Take into account that your article is not an
advertisement for your firm or services. Assume the reader has a fundamental but not esoteric knowledge of the financial
services industry.
Style
Your writing style should be easy to read and follow, yet professional. Thoughts and concepts should be clearly presented
and easy to comprehend. Examples that illustrate key points are encouraged.
Organization
Stay focused on guiding the reader through the paper. State early its purpose, the material it will cover, and why that material
is important and useful to the reader. Clearly summarize the paper's premise and key findings or recommendations.
Objectivity
Content should be objective and avoid mentioning or promoting specific financial products or services. Any statements or
assertions should be supported by sufficient research and data.
Research
Academic research in financial planning should have a direct and demonstrable application or benefit for financial planners.
All research should be readily accessible by editorial staff, review board members and readers.
Length
Manuscripts should run approximately 1-2 pages.

Continued from Previous Page
Format
Your name, mailing address, e-mail address, phone number, and a brief biography should be on the cover page. For blindreview purposes, the second page should consist of the title and an executive summary of no more than 250 words, but not
your name.
Executive Summary
The executive summary, ideally in a bulleted list, should tell readers what they can expect from reading your paper, including
all major points and broad conclusions. Do not attempt to sell the reader on the merits of the article. Include information such
as whether your article is a primer, for the experienced planner, or for planners at any level and highlight any specific
opportunities for practical application of your data.
Infographics
Infographics—tables, drawings, graphs, charts, or other visual support material—should not be excessive in length or in
number.
Endnotes/References
The FPA NCA uses an author/date system. While there are too many variations based on the variety of sources to cover here,
these are our basic formats for articles and books:
 Articles: Last Name, First Name [subsequent authors are First Name, Last Name]. Year. "Article Title." Publication
Title 1 [volume], 2 [issue] (Month or Season, if available): 22–32 [page numbers].
 Books: Last Name, First Name [subsequent authors are First Name, Last Name]. Year. Book Title. 4th ed. City:
Publisher.
Screening & Review
Initial Screening
The Communications Committee first screens manuscripts for appropriateness and quality, and may suggest revisions before
sending a manuscript for blind peer review. Authors are notified of the editorial staff's decision.
Peer Review
Articles with merit will be reviewed by the FPA NCA Communications Committee. The initial screening and peer-review
process takes six to eight weeks. You will be notified as soon as we have heard from all of our reviewers.
Once we have received all manuscript reviews, you will receive a letter notifying you of next steps—publish, revise, reject—
for your manuscript, along with copies of the reviewers' evaluations.
While your manuscript is in the review process, we ask that you do not submit it to any other publication for consideration.
The FPA NCA will not publish any articles that have been accepted or printed by other publications.
Submissions
Electronic
Send your completed manuscript or article ideas, preferably as a Microsoft Word file, to Kathleen Sindell at
[email protected] or [email protected]. We acknowledge receipt of all content.
Payment
Authors receive no remuneration or reimbursement for any expenses incurred in conjunction with the preparation of articles
published on the FPA National Capital Area Web site.
In Conclusion
If you have any questions or comments about please do not hesitate to contact Kathleen Sindell, Ph.D. at 703-299-1700 or
