The steward in the gospel, though working behind his employer’s back, was actually trying to correct an injustice by subtracting some of the huge interest his master was charging, an act of clever refinancing Jesus commends. 10:00 a.m. Mass Ministers 12:00 Noon Mass Ministers Hospitality: John Rodriguez, Victor Rabago, Sept 18 (25th Sunday in Ordinary Time) Carlos Gutierrez, Joey Barrera & Ricardo Alvarez LETTER FROM THE PASTOR Dear Sisters and Brothers, This week we begin the annual three month stewardship program. In September we register parish members. This is for new members who want to be counted in our parish roles and receive contribution envelopes by mail. This is also for those who have had any changes in their household since the last time they registered. Next month we will ask you to consider a ministry you can do as part of your stewardship of time and talent. God has blessed you. Now is the time to give back. In November we ask you to pledge how you will donate to our parish in the coming year. Thank you for being a stewardship community. Blessings, Fr David What Is Sacrificial Giving? A voluntary ,proportionate, systematic , sacrificial, and liturgical giving of money that is part of the larger self-giving of time, talent, and treasure. (“Church support “is not the same as sacrificial giving, but is the by-product of it.) 1. Voluntary——neither an assessment nor a tax (which the “tithe” became). 2. Proportionate——like the widow praised, though she gave little (Luke 21:2) The Old Testament “tithe” was literally 10% (of gross income); that may be too much for some, too little for others. It includes paychecks, dividends, social security payments, allowances, windfalls, and so on. 3. Systematic (planned) Part of a budget As income is received (not “when somebody needs it”) 4. Sacrificial “Making holy” (the literal meaning of “sacrifice”) the earnings and efforts of the week. If it doesn’t hurt (require a sacrifice), it’s only a donation, or a contribution, not sacrificial giving, which is a measure of one’s trust in God. 5. Giving (usually divided) Half is given weekly by way of the local parish collection. Half is set aside for independent giving (mission appeals, diocesan collections, personal favorite charities, ands so forth) 6. Liturgical——the bringing forth of the gifts and the offering of money are both part of the same ritual act.
