One of the particular features of this house is its
functional layout separating the reception rooms from
the family’s domain.
Numerous spiral staircases and galleries efficiently
connect the two. Inspired by the aristocratic houses of
the Duke of Berry, this building is a masterpiece of the Flamboyant Gothic style.

Here is a fine example of the early French
Renaissance, begun in 1490
with additions in 1515-1518.
The extraordinary sculpted façades
were inspired by Italian antiquity. Now home to
the city’s Decorative Arts Museum, this building
houses collections of 16th, 17th,
and 18th century paintings and furnishings.

Designed in 1424 by the clergyman and mathematician,
Jean Fusoris, the astronomic clock of the Bourges cathedral
is the oldest timepiece of its kind in France.
Encased it a wooden turret with a red brocade decor
bordered by gold columns, it bears the royal emblems.
Originally placed high above a rood screen which once
marked the entrance to the cathedral chancel,
it has recently been restored.
An amazing light show
at sundown
The crypt, which was built
in about 1200, was designed
to raise the choir to the desired height.
The tomb of the Duke of Berry is in
the double ambulatory, while the tombs
of Bourges’ archbishops form a
semicircle behind.
At the back of the rotunda,
a 16th-century Holy Sepulchre
is exhibited under a panelled baldachino.
In 1994, the remains of the cathedral
rood-screen were installed here.

A spiral staircase of 396 steps

the “Butter Tower” because it collapsed
in 1506 and was rebuilt
thanks to the sale of indulgences.

In 1199, the
archbishop Guillaume de Danjon,
a former Cistercian abbot, was called upon to continue
the project. A staunch anti-Cathar, his iconographical
program was a rigorous statement of faith designed
to counter the fledgling heretical doctrines
sprouting up elsewhere.
The second construction campaign, which included
the nave and five portals of the western façade,
was completed in about 1230.
The absence of transept gave the church spatial
vastness. The pyramidal elevation and two-tiered
flying buttresses were audacious in scope.

These “pages of light” illustrate the teachings
of the Church: surrounding the central figures
of the Christ, Virgin, and Saint Etienne
is a procession of prophets and apostles.
Scenes from the Old and New Testaments, lives of the saints, parables,
plus lively depictions of contributing trade guilds complete the scheme.
On the western façade is the 14th century “Grand Housteau,”
gift of the Duke John of Berry.

Shedding colored light throughout the three
tiers of the choir, the Bourges windows
magisterially respond to the medieval quest
for “lux continua”, an interplay of light
and stone that makes the edifice come alive.
Construction began on the east end, with
a lower church or “crypt” built on the ground
level outside the old Gallo-Roman wall.
The apse and choir were then added above.

Born in 1400 into a family of merchants, Jacques Cœur
quickly climbed the social ladder to become one of the most
influential men of his time. Knighted by Charles 7th in 1441
and head of a vast commercial empire in the Mediterranean,
Jacques Coeur decided to begin the construction
of his “Grant Maison” on the Roman wall of his town.

As the symbolic figurehead
of Capetian France against rival
Plantagenet occupations in the south,
the cathedral of Bourges had to be
a unique and grandiose monument.
The anonymous Master of Bourges thus
chose a floor plan without
a transept and plastic effects that were
revolutionary for its time.

At the heart of the château-studded
Historic Route Jacques-Cœur lies
this rare example of civil Gothic
architecture, built in the 15th century
by Jacques Cœur, financier to King
Charles 7. Here you will discover
rooms exceptionally well laid-out,
with a number of surprising modern
conveniences.
Sculptures abound on fireplace mantles,
doorways, and corbels, reminders of the
taste for whimsy and symbol at the end
of the Middle Ages.
After becoming royal domain in 1100,
the city of Bourges steadily gained
in size and in wealth.
High over the old town
and encased within the Gallo-Roman
wall, the Great Tower (twin to the Louvre
dungeon) stood as a symbol of royal
authority, while the Gothic cathedral
under construction exalted the power
of the See of Bourges, primate
of the ancient province of Aquitaine.
The Bourges Cathedral is a Gothic masterpiece
with a unique architectural conception. The Middle Ages come
alive in the dazzling colors of the stained glass windows,
while ancient gargoyles and statues keep watch over the city
from their lofty heights.

Situated on the old
marshlands, this garden
was created between 1923
and 1930 in the Art Deco
style with shrubs clipped
or trimmed into fantastic
shapes.
A rose garden, fountains,
and sculptures complete
these pleasant surroundings.

From June to September, Bourges swings to the nightly
rhythm of free concerts. Held each evening in a different
place, the gardens, town squares, and courtyards of
prestigious monuments host a wide variety of entertainment,
ranging from classical and baroque concertos to jazz quartets
and folk music from all over the globe.
A magnificent view of the cathedral
can be had from the flower beds
and immaculate borders
of this 17th century garden.
Fair weather brings animated
afternoons around the music pavilion,
the Merry-Go-Round,
and children’s playground.

Once the major gateway through the
city walls, the gabled store-fronts of
this centuries-old street are now small,
independent shops thronged with locals

In this medieval market square the butchers,
fish-mongers, and money lenders all had
their stalls. Today the gables of timberframed houses still line the streets with their
lively sculpted décors of grape clusters and
cabbage leaves.

The timber-framed houses dating back to just
after the “Great Fire of the Magdalene” in 1487
make this one of the most charming districts of
Bourges. Old book shops, antique dealers, and
violin vendors help to preserve the medieval air
of this street lined with numerous restaurants.
