Only 1 Hour Per Day Required! This Sunday, March 14th, the very special St. Patrick’s Mission will begin. For the past several weeks, we have been encouraging you to attend this four-day EVENING event. Though we know your schedules are typically hectic, we believe this is the perfect opportunity to nourish your spiritual life. Our Mission was scheduled during the Lenten season because we find that many people, in addition to the tradition of giving something up for Lent, want to do something affirmative as well. The Mission is something you can share with your fellow parishioners and we guarantee you will feel a spiritual awakening after you have attended it. The Mission requires about an hour each evening. Entitled “Awakening Our Faith in Challenging Times,” it will be presented by Father Dennis Koopman, OFM, The Franciscans Ministry of the Word. The Mission will focus on the mystery of Jesus. Each day’s session will cover a theme. Presentations will be given that reflect on God’s love (including the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament); reconciliation (along with the opportunity for Confession); healing (with the opportunity for Anointing of the Sick); and reflecting on the call to evangelize, as we have been asked to do during the Catholics Come Home initiative. We hope that many of you will be present at all four days of the Mission with us; however, if you can’t attend every session, each one is a complete experience. Father Dennis Koopman, OFM, was ordained to the priesthood in 1970. He was born and raised in northeastern Iowa, and attended Loras College in Dubuque; the Franciscan St. Joseph Seminary in Westmont, IL; and completed his theological studies at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. While Father Koopman was a professor for 20 years at Quincy University in Illinois, a Franciscan University, he was active in and held leadership positions in Worldwide Marriage Encounter and Engaged Encounter. Issues of family life and parish life were his pastoral ministry during those years. Following his attendance at the Vatican II Institute for Theological Renewal for priests in 1994, Father Dennis began his full-time ministry of preaching Parish Missions. He holds a Certificate in preaching from the Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis, Missouri. Dear Parishioners, This great season of grace is your gift to your family to renew us in spirit. You give us strength to purify our hearts, to control our desires, and so to serve you in freedom. You teach us how to live in this passing world with our heart set on the world that will never end. - From a Lenten Preface This IS a season of grace. God is waiting to renew us. We just have to show up. Our Lenten Parish Mission is being presented this week (Sunday evening through Wednesday evening) by Franciscan Fr. Dennis Koopman. Sunday 7 PM - Mission talk with Benediction Monday 7 PM - Mission talk and Reconciliation Tuesday 7 PM - Mission talk and Anointing of the Sick Wednesday 7:30 PM - St. Patrick Day Mass and Candle lighting Seize the moment. Join fellow parishioners to build up your faith in Christ. Come to the Mission. *** A new pastor has been named. As you know, since November we have been preparing to transition to a new pastor for our parish this coming July. This past week Cardinal George appointed Fr. Kurt Boras to be the next pastor (I think he will be the 29th pastor). I spoke to Fr. Kurt on the phone and congratulated him and told him how happy we are for him and for our parish. Larry Oskielunas, on behalf of the transition team, also called Fr. Kurt to welcome him. We look forward to having him come to meet the staff and the consultative bodies. Fr. Kurt said he was very pleased with his appointment and is excited by the opportunity to come to work in Lemont. Father sent a picture and a little “intro” letter which we were able to include in today’s bulletin. Of course he still has duties in his present parish, St. Mary of the Woods in Chicago, but if you happen to see him around before July, be sure to greet him and welcome him to St. Patrick’s. *** Another bit of news this past week – the Cardinal has asked me to be pastor of St. Edward Parish on the northwest side of Chicago. I haven’t been there to see it yet, but I hope to go soon and begin to meet the people and staff there. I am happy for the assignment and look forward to beginning in July. *** Congratulations to our young people who were confirmed this weekend by Bishop John Manz. May the Holy Spirit be strong in you all your life! *** God bless you all, Father Mike Fourth Sunday of Lent Archdiocese of Chicago Page 3 March 10, 2010 February 16, 2010 Dear Parish Family of St. Patrick’s in Lemont, Dear Rev. Cronin and the Parishioners of St. Patrick Church, I would like to take this opportunity to briefly introduce myself to you. My name is Kurt Dennis Boras, and I look forward to serving you as Pastor in the years to come. Father Mike Cronin and members of your transition team have already contacted me and welcomed me to Lemont in your name. I am very appreciative of their gracious spirit. Now, just a little bit about my background. I was born and raised on the southwest side of Chicago, near Midway Airport. Presently, my parents, Ann and Henry who have been married for 62 years, live in Orland Park. I was ordained to the priesthood by Cardinal Bernardin in 1986. In that time, I have been an Associate Pastor, Pastor, counselor, teacher, and retreat director. I hold graduate degrees in counseling psychology, theology, and spiritual direction. I will be coming to St. Patrick’s after serving five years as Associate Pastor at St. Mary of the Woods Parish on the northwest side. I am a huge sports fan rooting for our local teams including the Bears, the Cubs, the Bulls and the Blackhawks. In my younger days, I played semiprofessional baseball for a team that traveled throughout the Midwest. I was a catcher and a third baseman. In the months ahead, I will tell you more about myself. But most importantly, I look forward to you telling me more about yourselves and about St. Patrick’s. My friends tell me I am a good listener. Until I have an opportunity to greet you in person, please know you will be in my thoughts and prayers. I ask that you keep me in your prayers as we begin this transition together. Thank you for your $2403.05 contribution to Catholic Relief Services for the Haiti earthquake. CRS is responding immediately to the earthquake that rocked Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti. CRS has committed at least $25 million for relief and recovery in Haiti, and has received $13.1 million in cash donations and commitments thus far. CRS has food and relief supplies pre-positioned in Haiti. Additional supplies such as plastic sheeting, hygiene kits, mosquito nets, and water purification tablets are being loaded in the Dominican Republic for distribution in Haiti. At the heavily damaged port in Port-au-Prince, a ship carrying 1,500 metric tons of supplies from USAID Food for Peace docked in the one operational berth. CRS personnel worked to offload the containers as they planned for a secure and orderly distribution. "Finding suitable distribution points is a big challenge because you have crowd control issues when a big crowd arrives," says Donal Reilly, deputy director of the emergency response team for CRS. "When we've got so little to give compared to the needs, it's difficult, as you may not have enough for everyone." At the St. Francois de Sales hospital, which has been working with CRS as part of the AIDSRelief consortium, CRS delivered enough medical and food supplies to allow the doctors there to perform their first operation since the earthquake. Though the surgery was conducted in a habitable building of the hospital, CRS staff say the facility is about 70 percent destroyed and will need a long-term reconstruction. CRS has formed six medical teams, each consisting of a medical doctor and a nurse, to provide primary care at several sites where people have gone for shelter. At one site, an AIDSRelief doctor began providing care on his own. When CRS staff discovered this, they made plans to get him medical supplies. CRS has been in Haiti for more than 55 years. CRS trucks coming from Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic brought in enough food for 2,500 people for several days as well as hygiene kits and plastic sheeting for shelter. CRS has been distributing such materials at several informal camps and other places where the homeless gathered after the earthquake. On the ground CRS is working with partners from Caritas, the international Catholic aid network, to coordinate their aid response. The agency is also joining most aid groups in working with the United Nations as it becomes functional following the destruction of its Haiti headquarters and the death of many of its workers. Please continue to pray for the people of Haiti. Again, thank you for your generous donation. Note: No goods or services were received for this donation. Sincerely, Adrienne Curry Program Director, CRS Peace, Father Kurt Page 4 March 14, 2010 Parish School information at your fingertips! www.stals-stpats.org Take a look at this thoughtful bunch! Lenten Activities Our Wednesday students participated in a Lenten Reconciliation service during class last week. After confessing their sins to the priest, they heard Jesus tell them, through the words of the priest, that they are forgiven. They received a spiritual fresh start and felt God’s mercy toward them. Our Sunday students will celebrate the sacrament this Sunday during class time. Next week, both tracks will participate in the Stations of the Cross, a traditional Catholic devotion. The students will “walk” along the path that Jesus took to His crucifixion. Early Dismissal for Wednesday Classes Classes will be dismissed at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, March 17th due to our Parish Mission. Parents are encouraged to attend the mission at 7:30 pm.
