A Message from the Executive Committee Dear Brothers and Sisters, This past month was full of activity! The St. Mary's youth sponsored a fundraising party for their trip to the 2008 Youth Conference to be held in Phoenix, Arizona. We wanted to take this opportunity to thank all parish members who have supported our youth. We are proud of all our youth members and anticipate that they will return with information to share with everyone in our next newsletter. With school ending, we would like to remind parents that this will be a prime opportunity to begin attending Assyrian Language classes to be held every Monday through Thursday from 4-6 pm and Bible Study sessions held on Fridays from 78pm. We are also happy to announce the home visitations of both Father Benjamin and Father Lawrance have been progressing. A planned schedule is set to visit all our parish members in their homes in the coming months. May God bless our families and our Parish. Amos 5:14 Mar Toma d’Marga Mar Toma bar Yacoub (or Mar Thomas of Marga, ܒ ) ܝ ܬ ܐܘ ܐ ܒwas a Nestorian Assyrian bishop and author of an important monastic history in Syriac, who flourished in the 9th century AD. He was born early in the century in the region of Salakh to the north-east of Mosul. As a young man he became in 832 a monk of the famous Nestorian monastery of Beth 'Abhe, which was situated at the confluence of the Great Zab with one of its tributaries, about 25 miles east of Mosul. A few years later he was acting as secretary to Mar Abraham, who had been abbot of Beth 'Abhe, and was catholicos patriarch of the Nestorians from 837 to 850. At some date during these 13 years Thomas was promoted by Mar Abraham to be bishop of Marga, a diocese in the same district as Beth 'Abhe, and afterwards he was further advanced to be a metropolitan of Beth Garmai, a district farther to the southeast in the mountains which border the Tigris basin. It was during the period of his life at Beth 'Abhe and his bishopric that he composed The Book of Governors, which is in the main a history of his own monastery, but includes lives of holy men in other parts of Mesopotamia and the regions east of the Tigris. The work was probably planned in imitation of the famous Paradise of Palladius, the history of Egyptian monasticism which had become well known to Syriac-speaking Christians in the version of 'Anan-Isho' (6th century). The Book of Governors has been edited with an English translation and a copious introduction by E. W. Budge (2 vols., London, 1893; Google Books), who claims that "it occupies a unique position in Syriac literature, and it fully deserves the veneration with which it has been and is still regarded by all classes of Nestorians to whom it is known." It gives a detailed history of the great monastery Beth 'Abhe during its three centuries of existence down to the author's time. It is full of interesting narratives of saintly men told in a naive and candid spirit, and it throws much light on the history of Christianity in the Persian dominions. Bible Verses 2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture written by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness; John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he even gave his only begotten Son, so that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. Romans 5:8 God has here manifested his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. John 5:24 Truly, truly, I say to you, He who hears my word and believes him who has sent me has everlasting life; and he does not come before the judgment, but he passes from death to life. Romans 10:9-10 So if you will confess with your mouth our Lord Jesus and will believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you shall be saved. For the heart which believes in him shall be declared righteous, and the mouth that confesses him shall live. 1 John 5:13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life. Romans 10:13 For whoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
