November 2013 - Winnipeg School Division
Shaughnessy Park School 1641 Manitoba Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2X 0M3 Phone: 204-586-8376 Fax: 204-586-6094 Acting Principal - S. Fox J. Fransen - Acting Vice Principal Administration ’s Message November has arrived and the mornings are very chilly with snowy and icy conditions, with this in mind please ensure that the kids are dressed appropriately before they head off to school. The teachers have been busy getting the students back into “school routine” and expected “student conduct’ within the school building and school premises. We will continue to teach and practice on a daily basis of the expected appropriate behaviour on school property and in the community. We expect parents and guardians to support this school effort that will give your child success in school and as a community citizen. I would like to thank all parents who have worked and supported us with their child or children. As stated in the last newsletter we are implementing two school wide programs called “Restorative Practices” and “Second Step.” At the beginning of the school year all teachers from Nursery to grade 6 spend time discovering the individual strengths and needs of their students. One way that the teachers do this is through the Winnipeg School Division developed Comprehensive Assessment Program (CAP). This assessment is completed by the end of October and provides information about your child’s skills and development. The children are assessed at the grade range that best suit their needs. This information is used to develop a learning plan for your child and will be relayed to you during the conferences in November. In addition to this they have been working on their regular or adapted curriculum. The grade 7 and 8 students have also been busy with their curriculum studies that include various assessments, projects, homework, and reading. As a result of all of this the teachers and your children will be ready to meet with you at the Student Led / Parent Teacher interviews. Student Led Conferences will take place for the early years students in nursery to grade 4 and the middle years grades 5 to 8 will have a parent teacher interview. This will take place on Thursday, evening November 21st and Friday, November 22nd all day. The new report cards (grade 1 – 8) will be issued on Monday, November 18th, this will give you time to review the report and be prepared to ask questions. Be sure to ask or check your child’s backpack for the new report card. Nursery and Kindergarten CAP reports will be sent home in late November and December and will be discussing the results during the Student Led conferences. It has been a pleasure to see all returning students and parents and to see new faces in the community. Anytime that you are in the school you are welcome to stop by for a chat, voice a concern or offer a compliment. Shaughnessy Park School continues to make every effort to ensure the safety of the children during the school day and to provide them with skills, knowledge, and attitudes to lead a healthy and safe lifestyle while in school and in the community. We will be providing the children through the guidance department with several presentations tp further enrich their experience at Shaughnessy Park School. The students have been practicing for fire drills during the past two months. The school has completed an evacuation drill where all students evacuate to the designated sites, Gilbert Park Tenants Association Centre at 45B Gilbert Avenue for the grades 1 to 4 and to the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba at 737 Keewatin Street for the Nursery, Kindergarten and grades 5 to 8. The Winnipeg School Division has procedures for all staff and students for a Lockdown and Lockout in the event that we are required to put this into place. A Lockdown is a critical incident response that secures students and staff, usually in classrooms, to prevent access or harm to the occupants of the lockdown locations. A Lockout is a critical incident response that secures the school to prevent unauthorized entry to the school building. All exterior doors will be locked and signs will be posted on the doors stating that we are in Lockout. During the Lockout staff and students are not to leave the school building or allow anyone into the school. Update on staffing at Shaughnessy Park School. Ms. Pundyk is on a medical leave effective October 28th and will return the first day back in January. She is currently recovering from knee replacement surgery. I would like to introduce our new acting Vice-Principal, Ms. Fransen. Ms. Fransen has been teaching at Shaughnessy Park School for the past 3 years in Room 39. While in her new role, Ms. Fransen has left her class in good hands with Mr. Gadsby. There will be a Remembrance Day service on the morning of November 8th at 10:00 in the morning, we encourage all community members to join us. Please take note of the November calendar and school closures due to Parent Teacher meetings and professional development for staff. Have a great November and keep warm! S. NEWS FROM GUIDANCE Mrs. K Tingskou It has been a busy start to the 2013 school year. Our Bee Buddy and Ambassadors are back in action welcoming new students to Shaughnessy Park School. This team of students are responsible for introducing new students to teachers and generally helping students through the first few days. FRIDAY LUNCH TIME is Grade Six Girl Time! The girls get together for a social hour of music, dance, crafts or games. The grade 7 and 8 ABC students (Anti Bullying Club) have started a ‘Have You Filled A Bucket’ Campaign and will be visiting Grades 1 – 4 classrooms to explain Bucket Filling and how to be responsible, respectful students who treat each other with kindness. Shaughnessy Park School initiated an “Attendance Counts” program. Attendance Counts is a new school wide initiative to reinforce regular attendance at school. Good attendance helps children succeed in school and bolster their self-esteem. Improving attendance requires a comprehensive approach that goes beyond sanctions and includes incentives. At Shaughnessy Park we are trying to make a positive difference through our actions. We have begun an incentive program where students and classrooms will be recognized for good attendance. For example, we will acknowledge classes with the best attendance, the most improved attendance and perfect punctuality. Individual students may become ‘stars’ if they have less than 2 absences in a month. Our goal is to reinforce the positive aspects of attending school on a regular basis. Ask your student if their class has received an attendance or punctuality award yet! Our sincere thanks go to Glen Ominski, Branch Manager at the TD Bank 850 Keewatin and McDonalds Restaurants for donating prizes to support our students in their quest to become regular school attendees. If you or your student would like to speak to Mrs Tingskou, please contact the school. Any student may ask to go to her office; Mom/Dad/Guardian may ask that she speaks with their child or a staff member may ask her to see a student.
