Small change: A German woman has been accused of tax evasion for hiding coins she earned for cleaning toilets. The public washroom employee who serviced 50 locations in Bonn, allegedly took the gratuity payments from patrons, paid a nominal amount to helpers she hired to assist her, and stashed the rest. However, one of the helpers realized the greedy woman was ripping off her staff and reported her to the authorities. Officials took this information seriously, visited the woman’s house, and found numerous bags of small-denomination coins in her garage. It is thought she had hidden 40,000 Euros (about $50,000US). Popular summer treat: The Slurpee is a frozen flavored drink that’s sure to cool you off during the hot days of summer. In the city of Winnipeg, Manitoba (CA), lots of people flock to their local convenience store, the 7-Eleven, to snap up a Slurpee, not just in the summer, but year-round. In fact, Winnipeg has been declared the Slurpee Capital of the World by 7-Eleven for the 13th consecutive year. According to Tim Donegan, 7-Eleven’s vice-president for Canada, Winnipeg stores sell more Slurpees per outlet than anywhere in the world. He adds that Calgary, Alberta (CA), and Detroit, Michigan (US), are hot on Winnipeg’s heels. Teeth cleaning: Exactly how does one clean the teeth of a hippopotamus, given that its mouth can be four- feet wide? Not only that, but a hippo has giant incisors, as well as curved lower canine teeth that grow into tusks. At the Shanghai Zoo, the hippo zookeepers once used a broom for this task, but they have replaced that everyday tool with a four-foot-long toothbrush which was specially made for this task. Zoo official Pan Xiuwen explains that the fruit and vegetables eaten by the hippos often gets stuck in the gaps between the teeth, so they need to be cleaned every few days. Now the zoo puts on a show when it’s time to clean the teeth of the three resident hippos. Airport bee invasion: Three planes at the Kolkata Airport in India were delayed for takeoff for a strange reason–swarming bees. In the first instance, a swarm flew into the cargo area and loading had to be stopped until the bees could be removed with a fire truck’s water cannon. The second time, the cockpit windshield was the target, but the bees flew off when the pilots began to taxi. Later the same day, the bees decided to swarm near one of the doors. Passengers were redirected to another exit. Authorities think that the problem was occurring because the bees were nesting somewhere in or near the terminal. could be yours! Book lover: Robert Burns, the famous 18th century poet, was born in Scotland to tenant farmers. It was a hard life, but he managed to read at night, discovering such authors as Shakespeare and Milton, which helped him to hone his literary talent. Don’t kick! The rain forests of Australia and New Guinea are home to a flightless bird called the cassowary. Standing 1.5 meters (4.9 ft.) tall and sporting 10 centimeter (4-inch) long claws, a cassowary’s kick can be lethal. Scary witch: In the original film version of "The Wizard of Oz" (1939), Margaret Hamilton played the Wicked Witch of the West. She was so scary in the role that many of her scenes had to be deleted, as producers thought children would be too frightened. Flower talk: Certain flowers are known to have certain meanings. It’s probably no surprise to find out that the white poppy symbolizes consolation. However, it is less known that ferns are associated with fascination and that dark red carnations signify deep love and affection.
