Our Mission Statement We are the Parish of Our Lady of Sorrows Saint Anthony, a Roman Catholic Community; as one Eucharistic Family, we are Christ-centered and Spirit-led. Children of God our Father, we are united by His Love and sustained by the intercession of Our Lady and Saint Anthony. We give witness to our faith in action. 2 From the Pastor’s Desk Mesaj ki soti nan biwo Kiré-a Dear Parishioners, Last week’s letter was rather lengthy but I hope you took the time to read it. I hope it provided you with an introduction to the important process we are undertaking throughout the diocese—Faith in Our Future. If you missed getting a copy of last week’s bulletin, you can surely find it on our parish website. Our core team for this endeavor met last week to discuss the best methods with which the parish can communicate with you, the work of Faith in Our Future. The first part of the process will be a parish selfevaluation. In order to do this, we shall be soliciting, in various ways, your opinions and concerns about the life of our parish. What are the strengths of our parish? What challenges do we face?, What can we do better? What aspects of our parish life need to be addressed? These are the sort of questions that will be posed to you. Your responses will be welcomed. I hope that you take a keen interest in this opportunity. I also hope that your responses will be honest, balanced, and fair. The second phase of the process involves dialog with area parishes on how we might best work together to carry out the Church’s mission. Parishes throughout the diocese will be grouped into small “cohorts” for this purpose. I am certain this second phase will be exciting, informative, and even daunting. In any case, the important thing is that it helps the Church to serve well God’s people. Next weekend, we give a prayerful and joyful beginning to our annual observance of Catholic Schools Week. This year’s theme is Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge, and Service. Join us at the 11:00 a.m. Mass as we rejoice in great work being carried out in our own school that is strong in faith, committed to knowledge, and generous in service. With affection Msgr. Gervasio Frè-m ak Sè-m yo, Nan mesaj semèn dènye a ki te enprime sèlman an anglè, mwen te entrodwi yon pwosesis enpòtan ke nou antreprann nan tout dyosèz la—"Lafwa nou nan lavni". Si nou te enkapab li mesaj la, e ke nou ta vle konnen pi plis, tanpri wè avèk Pè Jean. Premye pati pwosesis la pral yon auto-evalyasyon pawas la. Pou fè sa, nou pral solisite, nan divès manyè, opinyon w ak preokipasyon w osijè lavi pawas nou an. Ki pwen fò pawas nou an? Ki defi ki devan nou? Kisa nou kapab fè pibyen? Sou ki aspè lavi pawas nou an dwe abòde? Se jan de kesyon sa yo ki pral poze a nou. Epi repons nou yo ap byen akeyi.Mwen swete w pran yon gwo enterè a opòtinite sa a. Mwen swete tou ke repons w yo pral onèt, balanse, epi san patipri. Dezyèm faz pwosesis la gen ladann dyalòg avèk tout pawas ki nan zòn nan sou fason nou ta kab travay ansanm pi byen pou nou fè misyon Legliz la. Pou objektif sa a, pawas nou an pral gwoupe an ti "kòòt". Nap tann tout moun nan Lamès 11:00am an kote nap rejwi nan gwo travay ki reyalize nan pwòp lekòl nou an ki fèm nan Lafwa, ki angaje nan Konesans epi jenere nan Sèvis. Avèk afeksyon, Msgr. Sure, you've heard the expression, but here at OLS we really are! The ExxonMobil Corporation accepted 360 school nominations nationally, and I am proud to share that our parish school was one of the winners! Yes, through the CrossAmerica Partnership and the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance, we have been awarded a financial grant to further enhance our Science and Math programs. This is the second year that OLS has won this achievement and philanthropic award! The OLS Science Laboratory is an active and engaging place for students. The learning is interactive and inquiry based. Under the direction of our Science Faculty Advisor and Grade 8 teacher, Ann Margaret Emde, the Science Lab engages our learners. As overheard from a Student Ambassador during a school tour, "This is our Science Lab. This is where we come when it's time for Science to come alive!" It is quite an endorsement when a middle school student can share that statement with school guests. Our instructional program is project based and leads to the learners posing questions, evaluating results and gathering their data. The love of Science begins at Our Lady of Sorrows at an early grade and blossoms in middle school. The results of our engaging Science program is evident during the Science Fair. Stop by during the upcoming celebration of Catholic Schools week. Try out the student experiments, discover all they have learned. The team building efforts developed during their class experiments strengthen the children's social skills and encourages them to complete team projects to share during the Science Fair. Catholic Schools Week Open House and Mass will be Sunday, January 31. This is the perfect time to learn more about our outstanding school program. Your child's education is the most important decision you may ever make. Values grow in a nurturing environment. Give values instead of valuables. Wednesday, February 3 Memorial of St. Blaise, Bishop and Martyr Masses 7:00 AM (OLS); 8:00 AM (SA); 6:30 PM (Creole SA) Services 8:45 AM & 7:00 PM (OLS) Who was St. Blaise and why are throats blessed on his feast day? St. Blaise was the bishop of Sebaste, Armenia, in the early fourth century. He was imprisoned and later martyred for the faith. Tradition passes on to us that St. Blaise was known for his ability to heal both people and animals. Two incidents are particularly significant, as they are reflected in the blessing we receive on his feast. Tradition says that a mother brought her son, who was choking to death on a fishbone, to the bishop. The boy was healed. When St. Blaise was being taken to prison, he encountered a poor woman whose pig had been taken by a wolf. At St. Blaise’s command, the wolf brought back the pig unharmed. The woman is said to have brought St. Blaise food and candles while he was in prison. The blessing of throats is related to the saint’s healing of the boy who was choking. The use of two candles in the blessing is said to be in memory of candles brought to St. Blaise by the woman whose pig he had rescued. Sanctuary Lamps At Our Lady of Sorrows One lamp burns in loving memory of Mary Perferi at Carmela's request. The other lamp, lit in loving memory of Pauline Kubinski, was requested by her daughter. “Remember, man, you are dust And to dust you will return.” This year, the penitential season of Lent begins on February 10. Please bring in all old palms to be burned and used for ashes on Ash Wednesday. There will be containers at all the exit doors on the weekends, beginning January 16 and 17, to hold the palms. At Saint Anthony One lamp burns in loving memory of Theresa DiFranco at the request of her husband, Pasquale. The other lamp, lit in loving memory of Phil Damiano, was requested by his daughter, Denise. 4 Youth Ministry Update Host Families Needed Please keep in your prayer our process to bring to our parish a youth minister. The process began some months ago and we are seeking to have a person who will be the “right fit” for our community. Our finance council has strongly endorsed the need for this position on our parish staff. Twelve young women and men of the National Evangelization Team are coming to give a retreat on Saturday, February 20, to our Confirmation candidates. We are looking for few families who would like to host two females or two males for one night (Friday, February 19). Team members will have their own sleeping bags and our parish will take care of their meals. If you are able to help us host these young people, please contact Mariyam Francis (587-4372; [email protected]) as soon as possible. Thanks!
