Room at the Inn Project is Jan. 1 to Feb. 28
The Audrain County Shelter Resource Coalition (ACSRC) consists of
many agencies, organizations, churches and interested individuals who have
gathered to discuss how we as a community can be a resource to those who
are homeless or displaced. Our mission
is “Caring for those in need of shelter.”
We understand the needs are complex
and the need is greater than we can
readily see. Yet, we know as a community we need to address this concern
head on. Our first project is to coordinate an overnight shelter following a
model used in Columbia called “Room
at the Inn.” One of their guiding values is that no one deserves to freeze to
death.
One of the projects’ biggest needs at
this time is volunteers to work at the
Owl
sites. There are basically three positions or shifts per night needed from 6
p.m. to 8 a.m. This is a perfect opportunity for local groups, clubs, and organizations to donate some of their time,
energy or gifts towards a good community cause/effort.
There are currently four host sites
established; Mexico United Methodist Church, St. Matthew’s Episcopal
Church, Kingdom Love Fellowship
Church and Refuge Ministries. The
Mexico United Methodist Church will
host from January 1-7, Refuge Ministries January 8-14, St. Matthew’s
Episcopal Church-Mexico, January
15-21 and Kingdom Love Fellowship
Church-Mexico January 22-28.

BUSINESS AFTER HOURS. IMS hosted the December Business After Hours.
IMS is a one-stop shop for records management. Vince Fuemmeler, President/
CEO, has put together a team that specializes in taking the office workspace
from the traditional stockpile of filing cabinets and storage boxes to a modern,
efficient business. IMS works across a variety of organizations, including state,
county, and municipal government, universities, hospitals, legal offices, retail
businesses, and more. They provide routine and purge document shredding
services to clear out files past retention, and will store needed documents in
a secure records center. When clients request files, they are delivered back
digitally via a Scan-on-Demand service.
Business After Hours
There will be no Business After Hours in January

WORKER BEES. Mexico Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors work throughout the year assisting with ribbon cuttings and ground breaking ceremonies. We appreciate their help and enthusiasm for the Mexico Area!
NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS
We all make resolutions to lose weight, eat healthier, exercise, etc. This year why not make your New Year’s resolution something that is vital to you and your family’s safety
– BE READY. An emergency/disaster can happen without
a warning; be it a flood, tornado or snow storm. You could
be stranded in your home for days before help could get to
you, or you could have to evacuate your home. You could be
stranded in your car for hours before help could get to you.
Here are some ideas to help you be ready:
1. Make an emergency kit for your second home . . . aka
your car.
2. Always keep your gas tank at least 1/2 full. If you’re ever
stranded or have to evacuate your home, you will be happy you followed this tip.
3. Establish an evacuation plan for your house.
• Have a discussion with your family about exiting your
house and have a practice drill.
• This is very important if you have young children.
4. Put together a first aid kit for your home. This is something you could use year around. If you or your family
member have special needs make sure to consider these
when putting your kit together.
5. Stock up on food and water.
• Non-perishable foods and a gallon of water. (Each person should have a gallon of water per day for 3 days.)
• Don’t forget your pet. They need food and water too.
6. Keep a fire proof safety deposit box in a designated area
in your house. Keep copies of important papers in it. Another good idea is if you could e-mail copies of these in
your cell phone.
7. Remember to check your emergency kits and test your
emergency plan with your family throughout the year.
• You need to check your batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms at least 2 times a year.
8. You could do a family resolution . . . Learn CPR.
PROGRESS MEXICO. The Progress Mexico Annual
Meeting was held December 9th. The Vice President,
Robby Miller updated the crowd on the activities of 2014
and discussed the upcoming year. City Administrator,
Bruce Slagle and Economic Development Director Russell Runge also provided an update for the City of Mexico.

Tricia Cullom, Renae Rowe, Gary Jones, Dawn Evans (MAT Chair), and Ronald Dye.
Employees Help Feed Our Community
SSM Health comes from a tradition in which its founding religious sisters did
everything they could to provide loving care to the sick. Today, Mission Awareness
Teams (MATs) at every SSM facility sponsor events to heighten awareness of this
tradition and directly serve those in need.
The St. Mary’s Hospital – Audrain Mission Awareness Team sponsored their
second annual food drive to collect food and monetary donations that will benefit
the communities that they serve. Once again, the generosity of employees, visitors,
and community members allowed the team to exceed their collection goal. “Although this was a successful food drive, the community’s needs are much greater,”
added Dawn Evans.
“We are grateful for the support of the hospital and within four hours, all of the
food collected will be distributed to families with food insecurities in our community,” Jones said. This is a good reminder to please consider donating to The Food
Bank, The Help Center or your local pantry.

Doug Davis and Laura Dowling announced today that new Gift Essentials
owned by the Toellner family in Mexico has purchased Blue Handworks, a
gift company founded by Davis and
Dowling in 1984. The purchase of Blue
Handworks combined with a recent
launch of a new handcrafted stained
glass gift line is continuing evidence of
the Toellner family’s expansion beyond
its large base of wild bird and backyard
nature products.
In announcing the sale Davis commented, “As Laura and I decided to retire, we felt it was appropriate to reach
out to the Toellners who own Gold
Crest Distributing, which was our largest customer, to see if they were interested in purchasing our company.” Davis continued, “We were pleased they
were interested as Gold Crest has a
proven record of commitment to serving Independent Retailers and other
customers we have been blessed to
serve over our 30+ years.”
Mel Toellner, President of Gold
Crest Distributing and Gift Essentials division commented, “We felt
the purchase of Blue Handworks fits
our company’s mission of providing
unique products to independent retailers not available in mass discounters.
We know the Blue Handworks products are proven sellers for the backyard
nature and general gift retailers we
serve, as well as Coastal, Lodge, and
Pet Gift Shops.” Toellner added, “We
are extremely pleased that Doug and
Laura will continue to work with us
in product design and quality control.
Our immediate plans are to not only
continue all current designs, but also
to bring back some Top Selling Bird
Feeders and Whirligigs sold by Blue
Handworks in the past as well as create some new items for our expanding
Wine Gift Distributing division which
we launched early in 2014.”

Toellner, President, Gift Essentials
and Gold Crest Distributing, 888-9852473, [email protected].
