A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT Cultivating Servants for Christ – A Snapshot The Broadmoor basketball game is a unique highlight of CVCA’s school year. The “Bobcats” hail from The Broadmoor School in Mentor, a school for children and young adults with developmental disabilities. The Bobcats travel to our campus once a year to take on a team of specially-selected Royals in a game of hoops! But it’s so much more than the game. Our students and staff have come to love everything about the Bobcats’ visit – it’s an extraordinary experience that provides great scope for teaching and reinforcing some great truths with our students (i.e. cultivating). “ We talked about God’s sovereignty in the face of things that are hard to understand…and our obligation to make the most of the gifts we’ve been given. ” In preparation for the Bobcats’ visit, I asked the young men in my Connections group some hard questions… Why them and not you? What is God’s purpose? Those kinds of questions. The discussion did not disappoint. We talked about God’s sovereignty in the face of things that are hard to understand, the necessity of thankfulness for wholeness and blessing in our lives, and our obligation (per the parable of the talents in Matthew 25) to make the most of the gifts we’ve been given. We also discussed the possibility of squandering blessings and the need for vigilance in making good choices – all of this in an effort to get students to think about real life issues and to make the Broadmoor visit a teachable, cultivating moment. Oh, I almost forgot to mention the game. The Beyerle Gym was filled with screaming fans, mostly dressed in Bobcat green and mostly (I would say 100%) cheering for the Bobcats. The Broadmoor Bobcats took it to the Royals, edging them out again this year in a tight contest. Thank you for your ongoing interest in the work at CVCA and for supporting a school which has made …Cultivating Servants for Christ a central part of its mission. Students were able to learn how valuable they are in the sight of God, their Creator. As Mrs. Pence brought out pictures to show the world’s perverted view of beauty, girls came to realize God made them beautiful and we have no place to criticize His creation. Especially in a country like America where beauty is distorted by Photoshop, girls saw the impossibility to live up to such a standard. Across the world, beauty has differing appearances. Seventh grader, Kenzie Spodnik, talking about what she took away from the retreat, explained, “The world’s fashion and trends always change, but God’s ways never change.” The world’s fashion and trends always change, but God’s ways never change. Distinctively Christian • An environment where students can grow spiritually • Staff and faculty consistently involved in spiritual growth programs • Philosophy that recognizes God as the creator of all things and Jesus Christ as the Son of God and Savior of all who acknowledge Him as Lord The following morning, mentors were given the chance to share their hearts and open up to a small group of girls about their relationship with Christ. The seventh grade girls then had the opportunity to ask questions regarding spiritual growth. Everyone valued this time together. In total, the overnighter strengthened both students and mentors in their walk with Christ. Royal Foundations The CVCA Junior High Experience Develop Character Created for Freedom 8th Grade Trip Through Relational and Intentional Mentoring • Mentor-led Connections discussion groups that “break the silence” regarding issues of life and spiritual formation • Mentoring program with upperclassmen, helping 7th and 8th grade students prepare for high school Promote Academic Excellence BUILDING A FOUNDATION • Superior academic reputation • Help students meet the intellectual, spiritual and social challenges of the world that equips students to successfully meet the challenges of junior and senior high school! • More than 50% of teaching staff possess master’s degrees • Several staff members hold doctorates For J-term, CVCA eighth graders set out for the Ohio River Valley on a retreat called “Created for Freedom.” Students explored the topics of Creation and God’s plan for freedom and redemption as they relate to Ohio’s important historical role in the Underground Railroad. Daily excursions included the National Freedom Center, the Creation Museum, and even an old-fashioned riverboat tour! Evenings were filled with fun, fellowship, worship and relevant messages related to freedom in Christ. Register for all Summer Camps at www.cvcaroyals.org FALL SPORTS REVIEW athletics CVCA Wrestlers Celebrate Tradition in a Championship Year CVCA wrestling had another successful year in 2013-14. The team finished in seventh place at the OHSAA Division II State Tournament and crowned another individual state champion along with two other place winners. Senior Tyler Maclellan ended the year by winning the state championship at the 195 lbs. weight class. Tyler finished the season with a record of 39-5 and finished his CVCA career with 129 wins. He won the PAC Tournament for the third consecutive season and finished as three-time sectional champion and Alliance Top Gun Kusar ’08 also came in to help. Jared wrestled for The Ohio State University when in college. Joe Hickin ’08, who coaches CVCA’s junior high club team, Ohio Lightning, helped run a junior high clinic with Lester. Tyler Powers ’09 (state champion) and Greg Hojnacki ’09 (two-time state placer) also came back to help out. Zak Vargo ’10 was also back to encourage our CVCA wrestlers. Zak was a NCAA Division II national runner-up this past season for Lake Erie College. Finally, Seth Powers ’11 (state placer), Pete Meadows ’11, Matt Meadows ’12 (state champion), David Gray ’12 (state placer), and Assistant Coach Paul Charvat ’01 (state placer) were all in attendance. Among the current CVCA wrestlers and alumni, there were a total of 29 state tournament medals earned from those in attendance that week. What a blessing to have a program with such tradition and support from those who have experienced what God has done with CVCA wrestling over the years! CVCA Swim Team Reaches Success This Season Tournament champion. Senior Jeff Hojnacki placed fifth in the state at 152 lbs. Jeff finished as a three-time state place winner with 94 career wins. Jeff was also a three-time PAC champion, three-time sectional champion, and runner-up at the Alliance Top Gun Tournament. Junior Andy Dobben became a two-time state place winner by finishing fifth in the state at 145 lbs. Andy concludes his junior year with 109 career victories. Andy was a PAC champion as well as a sectional champion. Senior Michael Meadows completed an outstanding career and also won a PAC championship. Other wrestlers that contributed greatly to the success of this year’s team included seniors Caleb Gary, Jimmy Coyne, and Zach McCraw; junior Ryan Bennett; sophomores Mason Brainard, Jose Morales, and Silas Merkel; and freshman Ryan Baxter. This season marked the ninth consecutive year that CVCA wrestling has finished in the top eight at the state tournament! God has truly blessed the wrestling program at CVCA. One of the highlights of the season came during Christmas break, when CVCA wrestling enjoyed many wrestling alumni returning to the wrestling room while home for the holidays. Thirteen alumni contributed to the program through their experience and leadership. CVCA graduate, four-time state champion, 2012 Olympian, and two-time world bronze medalist Harry Lester ’01 came to run a practice and help inspire our wrestlers. State champion, and former assistant coach Matt Smilek ’03 was back in the room to visit the coaches and wrestlers. Mike Hojnacki ’07 was also in attendance. Mike wrestled for Messiah College and now works for Fellowship of Christian Athletes in Philadelphia. Three-time state placer Jared Only one senior and a large freshman class didn’t slow down the CVCA swimming Royals this season. Sophomore Eric Krenz left his mark on CVCA swimming history by becoming the youngest state finalist from CVCA. He earned All-Ohio status, finishing 11th in the state in the 100-yard backstroke. “Somehow he continued to crank out faster and faster swims,” shares Coach Heather Rios. “His times and placing in the state continued to improve with every level of competition he faced. It was a great finish to the season!” The swimming Royals also took six swimmers to the district level, including the boys’ 200 medley relay of Krenz, Caleb Hobart, Luc Hobart, and Matt Miller along with ndividual swimmers Maddie Carroscia, Morgan Burnell, Caleb Hobart, and Eric Krenz. “Our district swimmers finished their season so strong and with mostly personalbest times,” said Coach Rios. “It is always refreshing to see swimmers finish well. This group exceeded my expectations for fast swimming.” Led by senior Lucas Hobart, the rest of the team chipped away at mastering the basics and put in the yardage to establish a strong base. They learned about the importance of attitude and teamwork, while evaluating the significance of being a follower, not a fan, of Jesus Christ. WINTER 2014 • THE TRUMPETER 7 athletics Entire Team Contributes to Success of Men’s Royals Basketball Lady Royals Reach Milestones in a Transition Year It was another great year for the CVCA Men’s basketball team as the team finished with a record of 18 wins and 8 losses. This year’s squad finished second in the PAC Conference and had an exciting tournament run as they took their number two seed to the district finals at Stow High School, before falling to state ranked Cleveland Central Catholic. The Royals played tough throughout the season that included a late season upset of conference champion Canton Timken and three very good tournament wins against Field, Cleveland Collinwood, and Akron Hoban. The undersized Royals made up for their deficiencies with tough gritty play and determination which made them an entertaining team to watch. The 2013-14 basketball season was a transition year for the Lady Royals’ team. The team returned one senior and one other starter while welcoming a new coach. Coach Robinson was looking forward to beginning to implement his vision, style, and culture for Lady Royals’ basketball. He was also excited about the opportunity that the returning players would have to step into new roles. Though the growth that the program demonstrated this year did not translate into wins all the time, the team definitely developed and improved as the year went on. A major influx of freshman this year allowed the team to have a JV program again. This addition will aid in not only the development of those 15 freshmen, but also the program as a whole. As the season progressed, the girls really began to grow closer as teammates and buy into the philosophy that team success is all about the process. Several players were presented with post season recognition from both the PAC Conference and the District and All-State teams. Junior Michael Peters was a first Team PAC conference selection, First Team All North East Inland District, and Special Mention All-Ohio selection. Michael also led the team in scoring (18.7 ppg) and rebounding (6.2 rpg). Senior Marty Lee was a first team PAC selection, and a member of the North East Inland All-District Team as a Special Mention while scoring 11.2 ppg, 1.2 assist per game, and shooting 80% from the free throw line. Senior Terry Moorer was also selected to the PAC Honorable Mention team and was also an All-District Special Mention honoree who scored 8.1 ppg,, dished out 2 apg, and shot 35% from the 3 point line. A number of other fine players made big contributions to the success of the team this season. Seniors Mo Dorrell, who played a big role in providing great defense and rebounding, Andre Harris, who finished strong and had a great tournament, and Akil Brazier all made vital contributions throughout the season. Several other players were significant members of the team including juniors Luke Peters (9.1 ppg, 3.2 rpg) and Jeff Britton (4.8 ppg, 4 rpg), who shot 36% from the three point line, and sophomore Nate Peters who scored 2.8 ppg for the Royals. 8 WINTER 2014 • THE TRUMPETER Senior Ashley Tyna reached some significant milestones in her career this season as well. She scored her 1,000th point in the first game of the year and also broke the single-game scoring record with 47 points against Kenmore. Lastly, Ashley broke the CVCA career scoring mark with 1,331 points. This accomplishment was especially exciting as she was able to break the record in front of the home fans. The Lady Royals finished the season playing very competitive basketball and having a very good showing in their post-season loss to Laurel. With much excitement as the program moves forward, many girls are hungry and committed to improving during the off season. Also, the addition of a freshman team next year will provide continual growth to Lady Royals’ basketball. GO ROYALS! athletics CVCA Hockey Team Prepares for a Bright Future The 2013-2014 season saw many new faces wearing the royal and white. The team’s youth and inexperience showed through at times as the team skated to a 5-18 record in the top division of Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League. Ten new players took the ice as the varsity team suited up a record 19 skaters, the most in school history. Currently, 25 players participate in the program. Royals’2013-14 Bowling Grows to Two Teams Having graduated six seniors from last year’s squad, CVCA Royals’ bowling team leaders were unsure how much the team would grow this year. God amazed us by doubling our numbers and adding enough girls to the team to create our first girls’ squad. What an incredible experience this year as we re-built our boys’ team with seniors Brandon Hartel, Connor Holloway, and Sam Broadus and started a girls’ team with seniors Lauren Fishel and Codi Oster to lead the squads! The boys finished 5-9 as they faced some formidable teams in Green, Nordonia, and Ellet. With only four returning players, the Royals improved quickly in a short period of time. The boys’ varsity squad was led by seniors Hartel, Holloway, and Broadus; junior Joey DiBiasio; sophomore Nick Armstrong; and freshman Will Seiple. The JV boys enjoyed a runner-up finish at league tournaments and finished 6-6 for the season. The Lady Royals were absolutely amazing as they finished 8-7 for the season. The starting varsity roster included senior Fishel; junior Riana Pogue; sophomore Kendyll Kowalski; and freshmen Julie Gorbach, Maddie Cowley, and Hannah Knapp. They improved so quickly that they enjoyed a fourth-place finish at DII sectionals and were able to move onto districts, where they finished 12th overall at districts. What an accomplishment for a team that only began on November 1! We are excited about our future as we have many young players rising and improving their games. Next year will be a true growing phase as we work to improve our freshmen and sophomore players. We are very thankful to Stonehedge Bowling Center for hosting us again this year and to Jim Mansfield and his staff who graciously offered extra bowling time to our team. The team was led by seniors Ben Risma, Andrew Pruitt, and Paul Heisey. In his first year of hockey, Ben Risma made an immediate impact, providing outstanding leadership to the young Royals’ team. Andrew Pruitt, a four-year varsity letterman, demonstrated the physical play that has been the hallmark of his career. Andrew also played a key leadership role. Paul Heisey capped his senior season as one of the team’s leading scorers and the unanimous recipient of the Mighty In Spirit Award. This award goes to the player who best exemplifies what it means to be a Royal displaying Christ-like character on and off the ice. Paul was selected to play in the Red Division Senior All-Star Game at Quicken Loans Arena. The junior class was well represented with seven players. Team captain Tucker Anderson, the team’s leading scorer and MVP, was selected to the All-League and All-Division Teams for the third consecutive year. Moe Sloan backstopped the Royals in net, often keeping the team in games when they were outshot by the opposition. Rounding out the juniors, Will Lowenkamp, Bowe Andrews, Sam Dietrich, Norm Detrick, and goaltender Sam Sheldon contributed to the season, showed outstanding improvement throughout the year and are now poised for a strong senior season. The sophomore class consisted of Josh Polanski, Tim Cuckow, and Matt Greenwood. Josh, one of the top scorers, was voted the team’s top forward. Tim Cuckow also had an excellent season and was voted the team’s top defenseman. Matt Greenwood played a dual role, switching from forward to defense, and showed great improvement. The Royals welcomed six new freshmen. Hayden Dickerson, named the team’s Rookie of the Year, had an outstanding first year. Nathan Dietrich, Tim Foster, Shawn Morgan, David Krickhan, and David Kovalsky all demonstrated great improvement throughout the season. With these dedicated, hockey players, CVCA’s future looks bright! WINTER 2014 • THE TRUMPETER 9 10 WINTER 2014 • THE TRUMPETER DOMINICAN REPUBLIC ROME SOUTH CAROLINA BRAZIL HWAII NORWAY CREATED FOR FREEDOM GRAND CANYON j-term J-TERM ADVENTURES j-term Learning About theWorld Beyond the Classroom – Senior Skylar Dittrich Often, the best lessons can only be taught through experiences, and experiences are certainly what J-term trips offer. The trips are edifying, open to students of all grades, and eclectic. This past year, students traversed Guatemala, Gabrielle Martino London, the Grand Canyon, Norway, Bermuda, and far more. Sophomore Gabrielle Martino enjoyed a previous trip to the Dominican Republic so much that she returned this year on her second trip! She spent her time working on a new building at the Doulos Discovery School in Jarabacoa, grew closer to her fellow classmates, learned Spanish through immersion, and stretched her cultural boundaries. “The most interesting part was when we visited a monkey jungle and got to zip-line through it,” Gabrielle happily states.“I got to do something I never thought I’d do before.” Senior Kristen Harris spent her J-term enjoying the warmth of Greece and Italy while most of the student population braved sub-zero temperatures. She explored Italy, spent New Year’s Eve at the Coliseum, saw the Pope on New Year’s Day, and – perhaps most memorably – ate authentic Italian gelato and braved the bustling shopping districts of Italy and Greece. But on top of all the cultural experiences, Kristen also reveled in the chance to explore Biblical hot spots, such as the actual ruins of places the apostle Paul visited. “I can’t think of a better way to have spent my J-term than on this trip with the people I got to know,” enthuses Kristen. “It’s amazing how travel can really bring you together.” Matthew Tomich, Jordan Rajiah, and Matt Baldessari Senior Jordan Rajiah was given the opportunity to work with CVCA’s sister school E.I.P.G. in Atibaia, Brazil, where he helped sponsor and run a summer camp for young children. During his time there, Jordan learned basic Portuguese, how to communicate nonverbally, and what it means to be a leader. To Jordan, the most interesting part of the trip was “discovering how I rely on myself in a ‘foreign’ situation.” Through this trip, Jordan learned a lot about his own human nature, and when asked what lesson he would like to share, Jordan immediately responds, “When you love everyone, you are everyone.” J-term trips allow students to learn about the world beyond the classroom, and many of the students returning have discovered more about themselves and the way God works in the world than they thought possible. Those universal lessons learned make these J-term trips truly worth attending. CEO: AValuable and Memorable Experience In an increasingly competitive world where job experience is practically a college prerequisite, CVCA understands the importance of dabbling in prospective fields and the unique learning and networking opportunities offered to students by these experiences. Career Experience Opportunities (CEOs) allow Juniors and Seniors to shadow people in their prospective job fields – and in this race to meet the real world head on, anything goes. Students this past J-term learned from engineers, writers, doctors, and more. Senior Taylor Dittrich was thrilled to shadow materials engineers at SD Myers and says this experience has “helped affirm what I’ve always known I want to do.” Senior Aaron Chizmar was able to spend his J-term in Africa, learning more about the international mission field in a trip he recounts as “insightful.” Leah Chizmar Even a disliked CEO still saves valuable time and money that could have been wasted on a potential career that the student discovers isn’t for him, so whatever way you put it, CEOs appear to offer students so many advantageous experiences that it seems limiting not to give one a go. WINTER 2014 • THE TRUMPETER 11 fine arts Experiencing the 911 Memorial Performing at the Morgan Stanley Presbyterian Children’s Hospital CVCA Music Students Take on NYC Members from The Royal Ringers, Chamber Singers and Concert Choir groups recently traveled to New York City on tour. While there, they performed for the Nishuane Fine Arts School in Montclair, New Jersey and the Morgan Stanley Presbyterian Children’s Hospital. They toured Times Square, The Empire State Building, and the 911 Memorial and ate at some super fun restaurants like Bubba Gumps, Hard Rock Café, Ellen’s Stardust Diner, John’s Pizzaria, and Carlos’ Bakers from TLC’s show “The Cake Boss” They also saw the Broadway shows “Newsies” and “Wicked.” They took a Broadway class with performers from Wicked, learned a lot about life as a Broadway performer, and met many of the leads from the shows. 12 WINTER 2014 • THE TRUMPETER Here’s what the students had to say about their memorable trip: “I liked the city feel and the little shops everywhere.” – Charissa Ricker “ I learned that even when you see a huge city (like from the top of the Empire State Building) it is still super small compared to the world our God created for us.” – Katelynn Justice “The 911 Memorial was very emotional for everyone.” – Jared Wills “The street food was great and I loved the business of the city.” – Caleb Lichty “I learned and saw firsthand how much the world needs bright lights for Christ everywhere.” – Yukari Becker student life Outstanding Senior Scholars CVCA is very proud to announce Joy Schaeffer and Skylar Dittrich as National Merit Scholar Finalists. Joy Schaeffer: “I have officially accepted cadetship at West Point, the United States Military Academy, and will leave to go to new cadet basic training in the beginning of July. I hope to go into either law or medicine. Currently, I am involved in cross country and track, as well as Fellowship of Christian Athletes at CVCA. Outside of school, I participate in public speaking competitions, and am an attorney for the Strongsville Mock Trial Team.” Skylar Dittrich: My top three colleges are Emory University, Tulane University, and Washington University in St. Louis. I have been accepted to all three. I have played varsity tennis and enjoyed CVCA’s art programs throughout all my years here. I plan to study abroad in college and become fluent in Spanish. I would like to study international business and writing, and hopefully I will write novels someday in the future. My“Trip of a Lifetime” – Senior Evan Sheehan Senior’s Summer Video Featured in State of California Ad Campaign Last summer, I went to California on vacation with my classmate Drew Gasser, my mom (Kathy Jones Parker ’86), and my uncle (Bruce Jones ’81). We spent a week touring the state in an RV, camping in Yosemite National Park and gold country, and visiting San Fransisco. Over the course of the trip, I filmed our adventure and put together a video of our experience titled “California: The Trip of a Lifetime 2013.” I never thought the video would get any attention when I uploaded it to Vimeo in the fall. Months later, I received an email from “Visit California,” the state’s tourism board, about possibly using the video, that they had found on Vimeo, in an ad campaign called Dream365. Mr. Rostedt helped me work out the business side of things, and “Visit California” decided to use it for their ad on YouTube’s homepage in February. I was shocked that the video went so far. It was just a video of a family vacation. Visit California’s interest was completely unexpected. WINTER 2014 • THE TRUMPETER 13 development K NGDOM FUND Less than 30% to go! We welcomed another boy, Roran Vaughn, on July 27, 2013. Our oldest (boy) and middle (girl) both wanted a boy, so that worked out! Roran was a whopping 8 lbs., 15oz. at birth, which still amazes me. He is keeping to the trend of being a big boy, already weighing as much at five months as the others did closer to the one year mark. He is a content baby, making life a bit easier for this mama of three. However, life with three (and homeschooling) seems to be busier than ever. Comfortably employed as a social worker in the Akron area, she wasn’t initially interested in the opportunity presented by her cousin, Dr. Juli (Rybka) Slattery, to join the team with Authentic Intimacy, but she and husband, Caleb ’04, sought God’s direction and clearly felt His leading to accept the challenge to join the staff of this new international ministry that focuses on intimacy with God and intimacy in marriage. Hannah is now busy handling all the marketing and communications, running their website, designing brochures and writing for the Authentic Intimacy blog. With today’s technology, she is able to handle most tasks from her home in Akron, with only occasional trips to Colorado for meetings with the staff and to take part in live podcasts. This field office in particular specializes in land grabbing cases in which widows and/or orphans have experienced theft, been deprived of money or shelter, or been neglected in other ways by the administrator of their deceased caretaker’s estate. These cases are prevalent in this area and can take years of battling and persevering to actually reach resolution. I have stepped into the communications intern role, meaning I have the job of interviewing clients, photographing them, and composing stories to be sent back to the headquarters in the United States where they may be used to tell others about our work. This position allows me to harness my love for storytelling and put it to use for something profound: to declare good news. Sharing our cases with people in the States is declaring good news because it tells the victims that they deserve to be heard, and it proves to the watching world that justice for the poor is possible. In my time here, I have been able to connect with another CVCA alum, Jonathan Weaver ’02. My Spanish teacher, Mrs. Laura (Weaver) Chadima ’97, a Facebook friend after I graduated in 2009, saw a post about my trip and connected me to her brother Jonathan, who flies planes for missionaries with Flying Mission here in Zambia. We both coincidentally attend a small International Baptist Bible study in the heart of the city, a nice little oasis of familiarity in this foreign place. God is blessing the work of our hands in our individual missions, and I am constantly encouraged as I see His peace sustain me in such an emotionally taxing and uncertain season of life.
