Gee, might it be the long trip in to work today, dodging this car and that truck as they slid off of icy US127, or was it just a desperate longing on my part to be back in Florida? Whatever drove me to this column, I’m not sure, but my thoughts have turned to all the great recreational opportunities we have in Clare County. When the snow, ice and cold clear, we all ought to take advantage of a few of the nice amenities our county has to offer. Here’s a few: -Downtown Clare is a gem. The venerable and historical Doherty Hotel remains a destination spot for many vacationers, particularly golfers. Just down the street Cops and Doughnuts, a bakery owned by Clare City cops, is usually on most visitors’ short list of places to see. -The Amish farms and businesses are peculiarly interesting to many of us. Colonville General Store and others offer great bargains, that you won’t find at other stores. In June, Clare is hosting Horse Progress Days, a nationwide festival organized by Amish everywhere- and it is expected to be attended by thousands. -Clare County is home to several golf courses. Eagle Glen in Farwell rivals the most upscale northern Michigan courses, in this authors opinion. Snowsnake and Tamaracks are not far behind. -Canoeing enthusiasts will have a blast in the Muskegon River. Duggan’s Canoe Livery on M-61 offers a number of options for those that would like to spend a warm summer day in the water. -Harrison is dotted with a plethora of campgrounds, for all types of campers. Right in town is Wilson State Park situated on the banks of Budd Lake. -The new zipline at Snow Snake is one of my favorite activities. It’s awesome zipping down the line, above the ground. It’s a rush, young and old, can take part in. The Snow Snake zipline is actually a series of ziplines. In other words its like a golf course. You zip down one area, hike to the next, zip down that etc. etc. so you experience a variety of terrain and sights. -Let us not forget the lakes. Harrison is proud of its moniker- 20 lakes in 20 minutes. And it’s no lie. Budd Lake, Long Lake, and Cranberry Lake are the notables, but there are many others that provide excellent fishing holes. Farwell and surrounding areas has nearly as many lakes as well. We all know about Clare’s Irish Festival, which attracts thousands of revelers on St. Patrick’s Day, but Clare has numerous special events spread out through the year. Farwell’s Labor Day Festival is always a good time and so is Frostbite in Harrison. The County Fair is one of the better fairs I’ve attended with well known country acts performing, and a super huge midway. Paula Pirnstill Memorial Health and Safety Fair Since 2004, Farwell has hosted an annual free Health and Safety Fair on the Farwell Schools campus at 399 East Ohio Street. Tom and Paula Pirnstill started the event when she was battling ovarian cancer. She attended the first event, but was too ill for the second. She died in 2006. In honor of her memory, the event is traditionally held on the third Saturday of April. This year’s Health and Safety Fair will be held April 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event includes Cholesterol Screening, Diabetes Information, Blood Pressure Checks, a Blood Drive and much more.....all free for the whole family. Every year the event has grown and it now features around 100 vendors with each booth geared towards building a healthier community. Some of the unique booths at the Health Fair have included car seat inspections, a “Hall of Health,” Public Safety teams, accident rollover simulator, smoke house and many booths filled with health and safety information and free screenings. A free and healthy lunch is usually provided as well. This year will also include the 9th annual Children’s Health & Safety Fair with many activities for youngsters. Yoder’s Amish Craft, Flea Market and Quilt Auction Every spring and fall Clare is the home of one of the largest consignment sales in the entire Midwest and a semi-annual quilt auction that can’t be beat. In the spring the Amish event is held on the 3rd weekend in May (May 20 and 21 this spring) and again on Labor Day Weekend, always at the home of John Henry Yoder on Herrick Road just four miles east of Clare. Founder John Henry Yoder started the Amish Consignment Auction and Flea Market on his Herrick Road farm in 1984 with about 40 booths and a dozen quilts. From that simple start the event grew by leaps and bounds. Now Clare County Transit runs shuttle busses from the city to the Herrick Road event, which brings thousands of visitors to the community. This year’s 32nd annual event will fill the Yoder farm with vendor booths offering loads of antiques, collectibles, crafts, candles, furniture glassware, jewelry, tools and much more. You simply cannot browse through all of the booths in a single afternoon! In addition, delicious food, baked goods and homemade ice cream will be available. All food proceeds will go to the local Amish parochial school. The quilt auction, beginning at 9 a.m. each day, features more than 500 hand-pieced and sewn quilts, wall hangings, table runners, quilt tops, rugs and small cloth craft items. The un-pieced quilts and wall hangings, small craft items, quilt tops and rugs are featured on Friday and pieced quilts and wall hangings auctioned on Saturday. In addition this year there will be a Festival of Quilts on May 20-21 in Clare in the newly completed headquarters for the Clare County Arts Council at the historic old Clare Railroad Depot of Fourth Street. Harrison Memorial Weekend Car & Motorcycle Show On May 29th Harrisons annual Memorial Weekend Car & Motorcycle Show will be held on North Second Street in Downtown Harrison from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This will be their 14th annual event which includes a car and bike cruise through the city around Budd Lake after the show. Harrison Fourth of July Celebration Harrison will celebrate the 4th of July on the 3rd and 4th this year with a Demolition Derby and fireworks at the Clare County Fairgrounds on Sunday and a huge parade on July 4th. Clare Summerfest Clare’s Summerfest Celebration will be held June 23 through the 25th this year, the weekend before the Fourth of July. Yard Sales begin all over the community on June 23, and on the 25th there will be a Fourth Street Market followed with Fireworks over Shamrock Lake. Farwell Lumberjack Festival The 14th annual Farwell Lumberjack Festival will be held on July 30-21 this year right in the middle of downtown. Traditionally the event has brought a bit of the area’s logging history back to life in the little community with a two-day awesome fun willed weekend complete with old-fashioned entertainment. Events include free Lumberjack Shows, Chainsaw Carvers demonstrations and competitions, unique historical contests like log rolling, a greased pig contest, skillet toss, “chicken chuckin’,” pie eating, pedal tractor pulls, and much more. It is a weekend with fun for the whole family. Thanks to a Downtown Development Athourity – DDA grant some new exciting things are coming to Harrison. This year a new Farmer’s Market, Retail Incubator and Community Kitchen will inhabit the communities downtown business district. The project is expected to bring new business and visitors to the area according Harrison City Manager and Clerk Tracey Beadle. “The purpose of the Harrison City Market Retail Incubator Program is to create vibrancy and ensure a healthy business mix in downtown by supporting new retail concepts. The program is available to retail businesses new to the business area. Retailers may choose their space size depending on their needs. This program is offered through the Harrison City Market Advisory Board. Business incubation programs have become essential economic development tools for communities that are trying to improve their economies and keep them healthy over the long run. The programs—which house very-early stage companies and provide them with a full array of business planning, management, and financial services—yield excellent returns. According to research, a high percentage (84%) of the companies that “graduate” from incubation programs remain in their communities and an average 87 percent of incubator graduates are still in business. The Commercial Kitchen Incubator Program is a food business incubator that will be a fully equipped, shared-use commercial kitchen facility. The kitchen is being created in response to the growing need among aspiring local entrepreneurs wanting to build upon the strong food and farming traditions in our region. The Kitchen Incubator provides all the amenities and necessary licensing to help the participants overcome the challenges of complying with strict food safety regulations, while ensuring safer food for the consumer. In addition, the Harrison City Market will provide technical support and business assistance to participants, encouraging the new businesses to expand and succeed. By accessing the kitchens services, local food entrepreneurs save the costs of commercial grade equipment and Continued on Page 9 2016 Mid•Michigan Business and Visitor’s Guide • Page 9 Exciting new things coming to Harrison Continued from Page 8 kitchens that now restrict their ability to start or expand their food businesses. A shared-use community commercial kitchen can be a key piece in building economic opportunity, environmental sustainability, and community health. It can also play a critical role in developing a healthy, safe, and secure local food supply on an ongoing basis. This commercial kitchen also hopes to strengthen the local food system, by increasing the volume of locally grown food that can be processed locally, and by increasing locally produced food products. Shortening the supply chain of any aspect of the food production process ultimately decreases the miles food has traveled, thereby decreasing the carbon footprint of our meals. This is where the Farmer’s Market comes into play. The Farmer’s Market has a two-fold mission: to promote regional agriculture by providing small family farms the opportunity to sell their locally grown products directly to consumers, and to ensure that all people in Harrison and Mid-Michigan have access to the freshest, most nutritious locally grown food the region has to offer. The Harrison City Market construction is underway; plans are to have “The Market” open this summer”, said Beadle. Great things are happening in Harrison, be sure to check it out this summer as Harrison celebrates their 125th birthday. Nominated sites are generally added to the Register within 45 days of being submitted. The City Commission had approved submission of the application nearly two years ago on March 14, 2014 but the process to designate downtown Clare as a Historic District listed in the National Register of Historic Places began about nine years ago in 2007. Clare City Manager Ken Hibl said, “We consider the nomination of our downtown as a National Historic District to be significant and having long-term, positive effects for Harsh EXCAVATING ROBBIN Residential • Commercial INC. The nomination signifies the importance and the value the City, the Clare Downtown Development Authority, the Clare Area Chamber of Commerce, and Clare’s downtown business community places on the history of Clare and the importance of preserving that history.” “This is quite an achievement for Clare Downtown Historic District,” said Sen. Judy Emmons, R-Sheridan. “This area makes up the historic commercial core of the city and is certainly deserving of a listing in the National Register of Historic Places.” The national designation will give downtown Clare national recognition as well as help with grant criteria and allow tax credits to downtown property owners interested in historically rehabilitating their buildings. With the help of a Façade grant that pays a portion of the costs, several businesses are already in the process of restoring 2016 Mid•Michigan Business and Visitor’s Guide • Page 13 their building fronts to a historic appearance. Eight of the downtown storefronts are being historically restored to their 1920s and 1930s facades. The businesses who have submitted plans for the historic façade restorations are Cops & Doughnuts for three business storefronts; The Venue, formerly the Mill End Store with restoration of an even earlier storefront; Four Leaf Brewing; Campbell Printing; and Millie’s Downtown. Research for the lengthy historical designation project was completed with the services of Ken Lingaur of Clare, who was working on his Master’s Degree in Historic Preservation from Eastern Michigan University at the time. Information in a release from MSHDA [Michigan State Housing Development Authority] said, “The Clare Downtown Historic District is located entirely within the original plat of the City, situated along four blocks of North McEwan Street. The district is home to 51 buildings, two structures, one site and two objects, dating as early as 1873.” It continues, “The key feature of the downtown district is its many Neoclassical buildings. The number, size, and fine detailing of these buildings visually dominate the McEwan streetscape and is responsible for giving the downtown much of its character.” “If you have ever visited Downtown Clare you know it has a charm all its own,” said State Rep. Joel Johnson, R-Clare. “I am proud to say that the city I call home has been nominated for this prestigious distinction.” The earliest buildings constructed in this district are three former residences, all framed with wood and designed using local materials available at that time. Of the three, the 1882 Goodman House at 120 E. Fifth is the most intact. From an architectural standpoint, the district’s two most important 19th century buildings are the adjoining Doherty Opera House (1891) and Clare County Savings Bank (1887). These buildings were designed in the Late Victorian style with complimentary broad upper facades. The Clare Congregational Church is also of significance, particularly because of architect W. T. Cooper. The main portion of the building remains substantially intact since its completion in 1909. The church itself has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1995. “The National Register is more than a list of resources that have been researched and identified as locally and nationally significant,” State Historic Preservation Officer Brian Conway said. “The register is a tool for honoring and preserving historic properties.” Photo of downtown Clare (looking north) taken in the mid-1900s from the present location of the Clare County Review. Giant 4 by 4 foot and 8 by 8 foot painted quilt blocks are on display all over the county on the sides of buildings. “The Clare County Quilt Trail was established December 2013,” said Committee Chair Vicky Gunden. “We now have 55 quilt blocks throughout Clare County.” The Clare County Arts Council has been working on developing a quilt trail for the county for nearly three years. Onita Oles completed the initial research for the trail and a committee was formed to work on guidelines and an application for installation of a quilt block. The original goal was for 25 blocks located around the area. Each block is made of coated aluminum with a plastic core and wrapped with a UV coating of vinyl material. Individuals may choose to have someone else do their quilt block and still be on the quilt trail for a $50 fee. A green caboose, purchased through Clare Depot Preservation Inc., was placed next to the historic Clare Railroad Depot on Fourth Street late Tuesday afternoon. The community, Clare Depot Preservation (CDP) and Clare Depot Committee has been working toward developing the more than 120 year old Clare Railroad Depot building into a community center, railroad museum and headquarters for the Clare County Arts Council for many years. Once the depot is completely renovated, it will become a welcome center and trail-head for the rail-trail system with parking and access to public restrooms. Other plans for the building, developed by the Clare City Planning Commission, include permanent office space for the Clare Chamber of Commerce and the Clare County Visitor’s Bureau; the education center for the Clare County Arts Council and a community museum of historic railroad memorabilia and artifacts, photographs and artwork. The depot is also intended as a stop-over and embarkation/ disembarkation site for railroad excursion passengers, a return to its original, historic use. The caboose is a welcome addition to the historical project. The Clare Depot Committee will help with the renovations to the 1920s era railroad car. Depot Committee member Diane Lyons estimated that the caboose will need about $3,000 in renovation work. The Caboose, purchased from Coopersville and Marne Railway in Coopersville, has been a project the CPD has been working on for six or seven years, according to Betty Lewis, head of the group. She said the funds were raised with money from the Mid-Michigan Train Show which splits the proceeds from the annual event between “Dog Tails,” a reading education assistance dogs organization, and the CDP. The Clare Depot Preservation was founded in 2005 by Larry and Betty Lewis of Clare with the mission “to move the building from the previous location and to restore the historical building.” Photo by Steve Landon A nearly 100 year old caboose is the most recent addition to the site of the historic Clare Railroad Depot on Fourth Street. The building was moved a short distance from its original site to its new present location across Fourth Street from the Clare Castle in April of 2014 and since that time renovations have been ongoing. Betty took over the CPD when Larry died four years ago. “It was a dream that Larry had,” she said. “It’s wonderful to see it come to fruition now. He would be so happy about it.” She added, “And it is so nice to see how the whole community has come together for a project like this.” The Clare depot was built by the Pere Marquette and Ann Arbor Railroads in 1887. Passenger service on the Ann Arbor ended in 1950. The Pere Marquette line, by then part of the C & O, offered service for a few years longer, but the line was abandoned in the 1990s. The former Ann Arbor tracks are now used by the Tuscola & Saginaw Bay. The CDP said, “We do not want this era of the railroad, this experience to pass by without notice for our children and grandchildren.” Buying or Selling? The $15 million project includes a new Clare-North Industrial Park, a new water tower, and reconstruction of nearly a one mile stretch of Colonville Road, which included adding a third lane for truck traffic. The Industrial Park which has been under construction since September of 2014, only has the completion of painting logos on the water tower left to do, before it is completely finished. Two more Clare logos for the new water tower will be added this spring. Construction on the $2.3 million project to reconstruct and widen nearly a mile of Colonville Road is now also complete. To pay for the massive project, the City bonded through the USDA for $1.46 million dollars. Since the city received a $2.6 million Economic Development grant to help with developing the new “Clare North Industrial Park,” they are required to provide a 40 percent local match and are responsible for extending public utilities to the site. The City also contributed $350,000 from the Water System Fund Balance and $750,000 from the Sewer fund balance. The remainder, $1.4 million, will be repaid through the USDA bonding issue. Maurer Golfers coming to Clare County have a variety of courses to choose from. Some of the finest golf courses in the state of Michigan can be found in this area. Firefly Golf Links was built in the early 1930s and is the county’s oldest course. It was expanded in 1992 to 18 holes and is one of the most in-demand courses in the area with exacting greens, water on 13 holds and bluegrass fairways through rolling woodlands to make it a challenge. Firefly features a snack bar, cocktail lounge, golf shop and a practice green. It’s located 2 ¼ miles north of Clare on old U.S. 27. Call them at 989-386-3510. Two Guys Who Golf say “Firefly is a tremendously fun golf course, and affords a serene experience with abundant native wildlife.. It is a great value.” A little further north is the Tamaracks, 18 holes and a par 70 with 5,760 yards to play. Prices are reasonable and the Tamaracks describes itself as “not the Country Club, just a club in the country.” The course, which offers a snack bar and other amenities, is located seven miles north of Harrison on Old 27. Toss in an occasional gangster, a few cutthroats, scoundrels and eccentric characters (like Spikehorn Meyers and his bears) and you’ve got some great stories of the county’s exciting past. Add to all that historic buildings, several beautiful examples of Depression-era art, a claim to the first logging railroad in the state, an old railroad depot and more—well you’ve got plenty of reasons to enjoy this county’s history. The volunteers of the Clare County Historical Society seek to tell these stories and promote local history to residents and visitors alike. In 1871, the State Legislature recognized Farwell as the county seat. The Courthouse was moved to Harrison in 1877 after a horde of lumberjacks came in from surrounding lumber camps and voted it to a more central location in the county. The Village of Farwell grew in population due largely to the saw mills in the area offering jobs in the lumbering industry. Timber and its by-products supplied builders and factories with materials needed to help build the growing towns and cities throughout the mid-west. The village had other industries including a creamery, brick factory, cement block factory, and a very large ice house that supplied ice for ice boxes and rail cars. The ice house was destroyed by fire in the early forties. George Hitchcock built a water-driven grist mill in 1875. The mill, a great source of pride for the community, was purchased by Fred Siegle in 1927. The historic structure was completely destroyed by fire Nominated... • Golf Digest “Place to Play” Rates Eagle Glen 4 Stars on July 3, 2004. Two railroads passed through Farwell, which helped in the growth of the village. The Ann Arbor depot was on the north side of town, and those rails are still in use. The Pere Marquette depot was just south of Main Street. When the timber industry ran its course, the land had to be cleared of the numerous huge stumps to make room for crops and animals. Farming became an important livelihood for families in the area. The Ladies Library Association was incorporated in 1879. The Farwell Land Company gave the lot to erect the building, which still stands on Main Street and is presently the Farwell Area Historical Museum. The museum shares the building with the Farwell Area Chamber of Commerce. For museum hours contact: (989) 588-0580 Farwell Area Historical Museum or (989) 588-4530. Lumbering was the big industry in town until after the second World War, when the end of the lumbering era and the trees almost killed the town in the 1920s. The town bounced back when real estate was developed in the 1950s and 60s, and to this day much of the town’s population comes from retirees and people with summer homes surrounding the area’s many lakes. The town’s slogan, “Twenty Lakes Within Twenty Minutes,” brings in the tourism that is today the staple of the town’s economy. The town hosts the Frost Bite Open every year to celebrate the winter months with the frozen lakes. Budd Lake, one of Harrison’s “Twenty Lakes Within Twenty Minutes”. th Harrison was named after two men: the 9 President of the United States, William Henry Harrison, and one of the first surveyors of the area, Harrison Carey. The county seat of Clare County, once known as a hub for gangsters and other rough types, was first plotted out in April of 1880, when the land commissioner of the Flint & Pere-Marquette Railway agreed to plot a new county seat. It was named the county seat on Jan. 6, 1879, after arsonists burned down the courthouse in the then county seat in Farwell in protest. Harrison was considered a more central location to the county, and no more protests ensued after it was named the county seat. Harrison’s Frost Bite Open The annual “Frost Bite Open” winter golf tournament in Harrison brings hundreds to Budd Lake in February for a twoperson scramble on six groomed courses laid out on the ice. Spectators are welcome to brave the elements and watch this unique outing, with novice and experienced golfers whacking brightly colored tennis balls over the snow. The railroad, credited with starting the little town, still owns property Crooked Lake Photo by Amber Howe on the north side of the business district. A 1930s coal dock shows how heavily ingrained the trains were in the community. The historic Lake Depots highlights the railroad property. The village likely received its name due to its location in the midst of many lakes around the area. Lake stands between Perch Lake and Crooked Lake and Eight Point Lake is only a few miles southwest of the village. Other surrounding area lakes include Mystic Lake Gray Lake, Big Mud Lake, Big Cranberry, Bass Lake, Bullhead Lake, Spillway Lake, Three Lakes, Bluff Lake and Grass Lake. Today Lake has all the comforts of small town life, a grocery store, hardware store, gas stations, bar and restaurants and even a Victorian country gift shop. The Lake Post Office, newest in the county, serves parts of four counties. The village also boasts loads of water activities including some outstanding fishing and ice fishing. It is also the home base for the Michigan and Canadian Fraternal Order of Eagles, many Boy Scout Camps and boasts the home of Former Ford Motor Company executive Harry Bennett. White Pines dominated Lk. George The little community of Lake George grew up in the lumbering era of the county and the area was once renowned for having the nicest stand of white pines in Michigan. The Village of Lake George is located between two of Clare County’s most attractive lakes, Lake George and Shingle Lake, named after the sawmill that was built there. Lake George is about three miles long and winds through beautiful woodland settings. Each summer, hundreds of people come to the lake, which is almost totally surrounded by cottages and year-round homes. Lake George offers the modern conveniences expected from a small community and the quaint big-heartedness found in the rural towns of a time gone-by. After the Ann Arbor Railroad built its tracks through the town and on to Cadillac, Lake George experienced rapid growth. Those days are gone, but the railroad tracks are still there, but the former Tuscola Saginaw Bay Railway, now the Great Lakes Central Railroad Company of Owosso, now operates the rail system through town. Two trains a day, on Monday and Friday, still pass through town. Much of Lincoln Township, named after President Abraham Lincoln, was good pine timberland. The sawmills of Lake George turned out both prime lumber and shingles. The lake is ideal for boating and water skiers enjoy the long runs through the center of the lake. There is a public access site situated in downtown Lake George proper. Winter sports and fishing brings visitors to the area every weekend and the little village is especially busy during hunting season. Several historical sites exist in Lake George, but the opera house and hotel are now gone. The latter had boasted an unusual two-story latrine. It is not known how the facility actually worked, but pictures of the strange attached structure still exist today. Two speeding locomotives that met head-on in what is now the downtown area caused a huge train wreck at the turn of the century. One structure, The Depot, still survives from that day. A plaque commemorating the railroad can be found in front of the Lincoln Township Center, which also sports a library and seasonal events for the children and senior citizens of the town. Page 32 • 2016 Mid•Michigan Business and Visitor’s Guide By P. Maurer Mid-Michigan is Amish Country Clare, Gladwin and Mecosta Counties each have a claim as truly “Amish Country.” Clare County became home to the Amish in 1981 with four districts. Gladwin County was settled by Amish in 1979 with three districts, and Mecosta County became home for five districts with the first Amish arriving there in 1982. With roots going back to the original Swiss founders, Clare County is home to a large community of Amish. The Amish way of life is one of simple enjoyment of the land and community. They are good neighbors, honest business people and talented builders. Amish craftsmen are renowned for their finely crafted products including furniture, quilts and baskets. In 2010, Michigan’s Amish population was estimated at over 11,000, the sixth largest in the United States. The Amish settlements in the state are growing with nearly a dozen new communities over the past two decades. Michigan’s 86 Amish church districts are scattered over 35 settlements around the State from Hillsdale in the south to Mackinac County in the Upper Peninsula. The Amish community is certainly thriving in the mid-Michigan area and especially in Clare County. A multitude of different Amish businesses here offer almost anything a shopper could want. All can be found on a leisurely tour of the area around Clare and Farwell. A selfguided tour and map is featured in this issue. It was so big, two events were held every year, on the third weekend of May and again on Labor Day weekend. Finally John Henry split part of the event off to the Yoder Brothers Auctioneers, LeRoy and Willis Yoder. They now hold the massive 300 plus horse auction at the Isabella County Fairgrounds. The horse auction, featuring all Standard bred animals is held three times during the year. Check with the Clare Chamber for dates and times (989-386-2442). The equipment auction is now held twice a year on Colonville road at the Alvin Yoder farm. The dates and times will be announced. Over 500 pieces of farm machinery and equipment, more than 30 tractors and skid steers and much more will be auctioned at the event. John Henry and family still have the quilts, flea market and craft show, and it is still held on Friday and Saturday of the third weekend in May and on the Friday and Saturday before Labor Day. The shuttle busses will be busy. These days there are more than 600 booths, more than one person can visit in a long day.
