Dear Friends,
A dear friend and mentor of mine, Father Keith McClellan,
once told me that the life of a parish and of a diocese is
all about that which is ordinary and everyday. It is birth to
death, baptism to last rites, and everything in between. But
simply because it is ordinary does not mean that it is not also
extraordinary. In truth, our ordinariness was created in the
image and likeness of God, and Christ became one like us.
Our life as the Community of the Church, the Body of Christ,
is the life of the Paschal Mystery – it is all of the dyings and
risings of life that lead us toward union with one another and
with the Father. In Andrean terms, as a community of faith and
education, it is the life of the Red and Gold.

As the Andrean Class of 2015 prepares for their
commencement into the next chapters of their lives, and as
we prepare to welcome the Andrean Class of 2019 into Niner
Nation, it is appropriate for us to pause for a moment and to
look at the fruits of Christ’s ministry here at 5959 Broadway
during these past months. By the intercession of St. Andrew
the Apostle, our patron, we have much to celebrate and much
to be thankful for.
From the tremendous successes of Andrean’s Thespian
Troupe and Spell Bowl, Academic Decathlon, and Football
teams in state competition to the acceptance of members
of the Class of 2015 into one hundred different colleges
and universities to the thousands of hours of community
service our students have donated this academic year, we
can continue to be extraordinarily proud of the efforts and
successes of our young people. With a faith, energy, and joy
deserving of our respect and admiration, the community of
students at Andrean consistently exceeds expectations both
within and beyond the classroom.
We must also recognize the tremendous efforts of our
professional educators and staff members who strive to
meet the formational needs of each and every young person
each and every day. Andrean’s teachers, coaches, and staff
members understand and live the mission of supporting young
people in becoming who they are called to be – sons and
daughters of the living God, brothers and sisters in Christ.
This has also been a year of tremendous change and
development, both here at Andrean and throughout the entire
Diocese of Gary. Earlier this year, we celebrated the retirement
of Bishop Melczek, who gave so much of himself to the Red and
Gold for so many years, and we welcomed Bishop Hying, who
has already shown the strength of his commitment to Catholic
education in the Diocese of Gary. Their leadership, support,
guidance, and prayers continually remind all of us – both those
who have been part of Andrean for many years and those who,
like me, are new to Niner Nation – that forming young people to
live the Gospel is at the heart of everything we do.
With their support and guidance, we have embarked on a
significant journey of planning and development that will build
on the Andrean tradition of excellence and expand the reach of
our shared mission. For the coming year, we are adding almost
thirty new courses, expanding the school day, changing the
framework of the school year, developing further spiritual and
social/emotional programming, and engaging the faculty and
staff in further formation, planning, and development. These
exciting initiatives will allow us to meet the spiritual, academic,
and social/emotional needs of our young people in ways never
before possible.
None of this, of course, would be possible without the
generous support of Andrean’s parents, alumni, and friends.
We know that your support makes the mission possible, and
we thank you for allowing the Red and Gold to be a part of your
lives and for making it possible for the Red and Gold to be part
of the lives of our current students and for future generations
of young people here at Andrean.
The mission that we share is sacred. As the Community of
the Church, the Body of Christ, we are called to be a light for
the world. In my opening letter this academic year, I quoted
Father Jenkins, President of the University of Notre Dame, in
outlining the mission of the Catholic school – “To be a healing,
unifying, enlightening force for a world deeply in need”. With
faith, hope, and love, the life of the Red and Gold – the life of
Andrean – can be just that force in our homes, neighborhoods,
and communities.
Christ said that He “came that we might have life and have it
more abundantly”. Living the Red and Gold means having life
in abundance, and I am proud to be a part of this great work
of the Church, and I thank you for allowing the mission of
Andrean to be part of your lives as we build the Kingdom of
God together.
Congratulations to the Andrean Class of 2015 and to all of our
alumni graduating from colleges and universities across the
nation this May and June! We are proud of you, and we pray
that you will live the Red and Gold in all that you do.

Memorial Mass
On the evening of Friday, April 24, approximately 45 alumni and their family
members, faculty, staff, and students participated in Andrean’s first-ever
Memorial Mass to remember those members of the Andrean family who have
passed away.
The Mass was organized and planned as a collective effort of the Alumni,
Campus Ministry, Development, and Communications Offices. “Coming
together as an extended community to pray for Andrean graduates, students,
parents, and faculty who have left us was a very powerful experience for
everyone in attendance,” explained Campus Minister Stacia Bolakowski. “I was
honored to be a part of it.”
Father Mick Kopil ‘86, assisted by Deacon Ralph Huber, celebrated a beautiful
Mass in the Sisters’ Chapel. A candlelight memorial service was held in the
Grotto at the Class of 1965 Memorial immediately after Mass, and refreshments
and fellowship were shared in the cafeteria. Boards holding pictures of those
who were being memorialized were a focal point of the closing reception. “It was
a lovely tribute that really spoke to the importance of family and our memories
of them after they have left us,” said Bolakowski.
This new tradition will continue with a second Memorial Mass to be held
in November, 2015. Subsequent Memorial Masses will be held annually in
November, when the Church traditionally honors the dead.

59er Flyer Fleet
Andrean is proud to unveil a new bus service
available to the Class of 2019. Two buses
will leave Andrean every day to pick up and
drop off students across the region. The east
bound bus will make stops near St. Paul in
Valparaiso and Nativity in Portage. Seats
are still available on the east-bound bus, call
219-887-5959 to register. The west-bound
bus will be making stops near St. Joseph in
Dyer, St. John the Evangelist, and St. Michael’s
in Schererville. The west-bound bus is full at
this time; however parents may call and place
students on a waitlist.
The bus service would not have been possible
without the efforts of alumni Cary Bosak (‘78)
of Bosak Motors of Merrillville, who helped
Andrean obtain the vehicles. Also our thanks
go out to alumni Dan Nicksic (‘79) and Jason
Yurechko (‘96) of Arc Document Solutions
in Crown Point who helped design the 59er
decals that are on the buses. Through their
efforts Andrean will now be able to provide
transportation for future generations of 59ers.

Theater: The Andrean Theater Company attended the State
Theater competition and placed third. In this State competition
senior Sandy Akers won the Superior Award for Best in Show
as a Soloist, and junior Mark Judge won Best Actor. Junior
Megan Jones earned gold for her solo piano performance
at ISSMA.

Selma: Andrean celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day
with a bus trip to the movies to see Ava DuVernay’s film
“Selma”. The trip was graciously funded by the Class of 1984.
Students completed worksheets and afterwards participated
in discussions that focused on both the history and modern
day implications of the March at Selma and the Civil
Rights Movement.
Sports: Athletics thrived in 2014 and 2015. The Football team
won the title of State Runner-Up, with Senior Josh Barajas
earning a spot as an Army All-American and then committed
to play football at the University of Notre Dame next Fall.
Senior Mike Krzyston was a wrestling State Qualifier. Senior
Kaycee Crist and Junior Isabella Pradhan each qualified for the
Cross Country Semi-State. Coming off of back-to-back State
Baseball titles, the Andrean Baseball team has consistently
been ranked as one of the leading teams in the state to watch
this season.
Homecoming Parade: The Homecoming Parade tradition
was reinstated this year. Each class had a float with various
clubs and teams also represented in the parade. The parade
route started out in Hidden Lake Park and then made its way
down Broadway to 5959. It was a great display of Andrean’s
comradery, enthusiasm for teamwork and showcased the 59er
school spirit at its best.
Academic Teams: The Decathlon Team took state runner-up
and the Quiz Bowl Team took second in conference.
Red Crew: Students now have the opportunity to earn a
scholarship to aid with the cost of tuition. The Red Crew does
maintenance and upkeep around campus after school each
day, meeting new people and creating strong work ethics.

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge: President Harry Vande Velde,
Principal Benjamin Potts, Head Football Coach Phil Mason,
and many others participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge
in the courtyard. On a National level the Ice Bucket challenge
raised a great amount of awareness and money for the
ALS Foundation. The AHS faculty and staff were proud to
participate.
Town Hall Meeting: A Town Hall meeting was held that
outlined the major changes happening on campus next year.
These changes include an earlier start and addition of an eighth
period to the school day. These changes make Andrean an even
stronger academic powerhouse and college prep institution.

Give Back
in a Big Way
Five Andrean students: Aleah Rivera, Cameron
Hughes, Maggie Samels, Maddie Martin
and Olivia Santaquillani created pink sweaters to raise money for breast cancer
awareness. After seeing members of the Andrean family fight cancer, these five
students were inspired to help. They sold the sweaters during their lunch hour and
donated all the proceeds to the American Cancer Society. Together they raised
a total of $1,230. This fine example of giving back exemplifies faith, learning,
leadership and service which is instilled in all Andrean students.

Fashion Club: Student Cameron Hughes who will attend the
Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles,
founded the Andrean Fashion Club for students this year. The
club focuses on both high and practical fashion with special
attention on equality and diversity in the fashion industry.
The club held a very successful dress drive. The club collected
formal attire and then donated it to young people in the area
who cannot afford dresses and tuxedos to wear to the prom.
The kindness of these donations touched the hearts of many.

Bill McCabe, Class of ‘74,
Recognized as Realtor “Top Agent”

In late 2014, Bill McCabe (AHS Class
of 1974) was once again named “Top
Agent” for realators throughout the
United States -- an honor given only
to a few. Bill started working as a sales
associate with Century 21 in 1985 and
became an active member in the local,
state and national Associations of
Realtors. In 1994, he was named Century
21’s Top Agent in the World, filmed and
starred in 3 national TV commercials in
Hollywood and shortly after that, was
named Indiana’s Realtor of the Year.
In 1995, McCabe opened his own
company, Century 21 Executive Realty,
in Schererville and is the broker/owner.
He also owns Executive Realty in
Syracuse, Indiana, is partners in Century
21 Alliance in Valparaiso, and works
with his son and daughter at DowningFrye Realty in Naples, Florida. Typically
selling between 1200 to 1800 units
per year, Century 21 Executive Realty
is consistently ranked one of the Top
25 agencies nationwide. He has been a
Triple Centurion Award Winner virtually
his whole career closing 250 to 300
units per year. His company was the
number one company in Chicagoland
for 2014 and also won the Per Person
productivity Award last year. He
operates his business with honesty and
integrity. It is his dedication to quality
client service that has truly set him apart
in the real estate industry.
In addition to his busy career, Bill and his
company are active supporters of Easter
Seals and also raise considerable funds
for the Carmelite Home, an organization
that helps children in need. He also
serves as a member of The Times
Newspaper Board of Economists. He and
his wife, Donna, who have been married
33 years, have three children and three

Andy Farag AHS ’97, Umphrey’s McGee- percussionist

For all you alumni living in Indy or
Chicagoland, come out to White River
State Park (8/8) or Ravinia (8/14)
to see the world renowned band
Umphrey’s McGee perform in concert
with fellow Niner Andy Farag (AHS
’97) on percussion. If you don’t live in
either of these markets, no problem
as Umphrey’s McGee soon starts its
extensive tour schedule slated for this
May-September. With Farag as lead
percussionist, the band puts on more
than 100 live performances annually
at some of the most impressive music
venues in the U.S. It has received rave
reviews by Rolling Stone, Billboard,
USA Today, WXRT and countless other
respected mediums.
Umphrey’s McGee first got its start
nearly two decades ago on the campus
of the University of Notre Dame with
Mike Mirro ’96 one of the founding band
members. Mirro left Umphrey’s McGee in
2002 to pursue other interests, but was
responsible for recruiting fellow Andrean
classmate Andy Farag. Farag who was
an Indiana University student at the time
joined the band full-time in 1998.
This progressive rock/jam band is
now one of the most respected and
accomplished music groups of its time
with 9 studio albums and 3.6 million

Martin Mulloy, AHS ’75 Alumni Profile

One of Ford Motor Company’s taglines is “Ford, Built for the
Road Ahead” and this marketing slogan certainly describes
Andrean’s own Martin “Marty” Mulloy. Mulloy, AHS Class of
1975, credits that Andrean significantly helped build him for
his career road ahead.
Spending his entire professional career with Ford Motor
Company, Mulloy was named Vice President Global Labor
Affairs in 2005. He held this post until his retirement last
year. As part of Ford’s senior leadership team, Mulloy played
an instrumental role in saving the auto giant in 2009 thus
steering the way for current successes.
As Ford VP Global Labor Affairs, Mulloy was responsible for
negotiating all union labor contracts and had a direct line to
Bill Ford (grandson of founder Henry Ford) and Ford Chief
Executive Officer Alan Mulally. With a global labor workforce
estimated to be around 200,000 union auto workers, Mulloy
found himself at times right in the line of fire.
“We recognized much earlier on that Ford had to make
substantial changes to its manufacturing footprint or we were
headed for trouble” Mulloy explained. “Starting back as early
as in 2006, Ford recognized that we had too much capacity.
We had to close plants and make layoffs. That meant making
some tough decisions and then moving on them. But I’m proud
to say that by working closely with the UAW, Ford was able to
do it without one involuntary layoff.” That cooperative working
relationship between Ford and the UAW fell on Mulloy’s
shoulders. Throughout the ordeal Ford was always respectful
of its auto workers and had the full cooperation of the UAW.
Ford credits Mulloy for making that cooperation happen.
While at Andrean Mulloy was involved with Student Council
and was a class officer, treasurer and then student body
president his senior year. “Along with family, Andrean helped
shape me” Mulloy said. “I learned about taking on added
responsibilities, honoring commitments and saw firsthand
what good leadership meant.”
When Mulloy was a junior he met
Janet Komisarcik (AHS ’75) in Mrs.
Mary Anne Mestrich’s Algebra I class
and they have been together for 43
years ever since. “Andrean gave me
the greatest gift of all” Marty said.
“I met the love of my life at Andrean
and I could not have done the things
in my life that I have done without
Janet by my side”. Married 36 years
now, Marty and Janet have two grown
daughters Eileen and Julie.
Besides being involved in student council, Marty was also
on the Andrean tennis team and was in the National Honor
Society. “I was by no means one of the elite students in my
class” Mulloy humbly says. “I did well and was probably in
the top 20% but there were a lot of very smart people. That
encouraged me and the teachers motivated me to work harder,
reach for more” Mulloy said.
Best friend Tim Sheeran (AHS ’75) recalls “looking back at it
now, Marty was always a great leader. He has an unbelievable
ability to motivate others and he’s always positive. What he
accomplished for Ford does not surprise me at all.”
After graduating from Andrean Mulloy went to Purdue
University and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in
Business Administration. Out of college Mulloy was hired by
Ford in their elite two-year management trainee program. After
that he was quickly identified by Ford to have great potential
and was fast tracked. Moving around and living in Australia
for a stop, Mulloy went on to earn his Master’s degree from
Wayne State University in Detroit.
Mulloy grew up in Merrillville where he was the youngest
son of James and Geraldine Mulloy. All four Mulloy brothers
Pat (AHS ’67), Father Jim (AHS ’70) Tom (’70) and Marty
attended Andrean. When Marty was in first grade his mother
passed away at the age of 42. As a freshman Marty’s dad
remarried the young widow Joan Nault and the MulloyNault household grew from four sons to nine. Four of the
Nault brothers (Bob ’67, Jerry ‘71, Tom ’72 and John ‘81) also
graduated from Andrean.
Mulloy is semi-retired now and co-writing a book on his
experiences at Ford. The book is titled “Inside the Ford UAW
Transformation” and is publishing this May. Mulloy also has a
consulting business and is a frequent guest lecturer on many
college campuses talking about his labor affairs experiences.
For the last ten years Mulloy has also been heavily involved
with Detroit Loyola Jesuit High School. Deeply committed to
Catholic education he sits on the board for this all male high
school located in the inner city. Mulloy and the board fundraise
to come up with the financial aid and scholarship money that
pays the vast majority (approximately 80% every year) of
tuitions that keeps this school open. More importantly without
this dedicated board’s fundraising efforts these inner city
students might not otherwise be
afforded such hope.

reunion this year and they are
looking forward to it. With all these
classmates approaching the age of
59 this year, upon his birthday Marty
will officially join the Fifty-Niner for
Life ranks. Marty Mulloy achieved
that status a long time ago. He’s built
for the road ahead.

When the economy was in the midst of a deep recession in
2009, Ford was the only one of the Big Three U.S. auto makers
who did not have to take any of the $90 billion auto bailout
money from the federal government. After the auto bailout,
Ford was looked upon very favorably by the American public
for not needing any government money. Without Mulloy’s
involvement, that might not have been the case. With Mulloy
leading the charge, Marty was responsible for working directly
with the United Auto Workers to help navigate Ford’s big come
back success.
“Going through this with Ford was a once in a lifetime
experience” Mulloy reflected. “I had a lot of sleepless nights
and stress. However I have the best wife and family. Janet was
my rock and supported me throughout my career at Ford.”

in Northwest Indiana, providing a high quality education and
foundation to our future leaders. Every day, the faculty and
staff at Andrean HS work diligently to increase enrollment,
maintain the buildings and grounds, provide financial
assistance to deserving families, keep curriculum relevant,
and make salaries competitive. Based on these factors, we
are working with school officials to determine the best use of
our gift. We intend to present the gift to our school at the “All
Alumni Event” on Friday, August 21, 2015.

With rising production/postage costs and use of technology (email, website, social media, texting, etc.), Andrean is going green
to more efficiently communicate to the Andrean Family. Along with the Alumni email distribution list (run & managed by
the School) the “Official Andrean Alumni Group” channel on Facebook is quickly becoming the #1 method used by AHS to
communicate to its base of more 15,000+ friends of the School.
If you are already on Facebook, please join the Official
Andrean Alumni group! This group is sanctioned and run by
the Development office. There are well over 12,000+ AHS
alumni now but only 3,008 people are part of this closed
official alumni FB group. By “closed group” this means that you
have to request to join and then only members can see posts
or receive notices from the School. Outside parties cannot ever
see, use or abuse it so your privacy is safe. Andrean closely
monitors this official alumni group on a daily basis.
To be safe, only join an Andrean group on Facebook that is
a “closed group” and has “official” in its group title. When in
doubt, verify by asking Andrean.

• The Andrean Business Club was created and is run
