Meeting with the Consulate General
Hindi Samaj committee members including Sapna Sharma, Rashmi Loyalka and Kaveesh attending a meeting organised by the Indian Consulate General in Perth.
Heads of various Indian organisations represented their community groups at the meeting,
which was held on May 25th at the Consulate General office in Perth.
Consulate General has urged to make the use of ‘Emergency Phone’ number service in case of
real emergencies only. Anyone is discouraged to use it for general enquiries and getting updates on their applications etc.
Consulate General also updated on how the Indian Government has support systems for Indian women in distress overseas. Anyone with any issues/concerns should directly contct the
Consulate General in Perth.
Based on discussions with other community members, it was perceived that all organisations
want to be united under an umbrella organisation and help each other as and when they can.
Consulate General once again congratulated us for a very successful Indradhanush.
That’s all for now!

Restoring Hope Art Exhibition
Restoring Hope is an art exhibition created by
young people from refugee backgrounds who
have used visual and audio pieces to share their
experiences as part of the Western Australian
community.
The exhibition runs from 18–22 June and will be
on display in the lobby of Gordon Stephenson
House, 140 William Street, Perth. The exhibition
can be viewed each day between 9.00am–
5.00pm.
The exhibition has been organised by the Department for Communities as part of Refugee Week
since 2007. The project involves schools and organisations that work with students from refugee
and migrant backgrounds to develop art that depicts the refugee experience and the settlement in
a new country.
Upcoming Indian Festivals—Puri Rath Yatra
The Rath Yatra festival is based around the worship of Lord Jagannath (a reincarnation of Lords
Vishnu and Krishna). It commemorates his annual visit to his aunt's home.
When is it celebrated
On the second day of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of moon or bright fortnight) Ashadh
month, as per traditional Oriya Calendar. In 2012, Rath Yatra commences on June 21. It runs for 10
days. The main festivities occur on the first day.
How is Rath Yatra Celebrated
The exuberant Rath Yatra festival sees Lord Jagannath, along with his elder brother Balabhadra
and sister Subhadra, venture out of their abode in the Jagannath temple. The three of them travel
to their aunt's Gundicha Temple a short distance away, where they remain for seven days before
returning.
The gods are transported on towering chariots, which have been made to resemble temples, giving the festival its name of Rath Yatra -- the Chariot Festival. Around one million pilgrims flock to
this colorful event.
Is it celebrated in Perth
Yes, The ISKCON (Hare Krishna) temple participates each year with their Rath in Fremantle Parade and the festival is also celebrated at their temple in Kalamunda with a smaller cart
