St. Ivo of Chartres, Dec. 23
One of the most notable bishops of France in the 11th and 12th centuries, and an important canonist, St. Ivo was born of
a noble family about 1040; he died in 1116 of natural causes. He went for his studies first to Paris and thence to the Abbey
of Bee in Normandy, at the same time as Anselm of Canterbury, to attend the lectures given by Lanfranc. About 1080 he
became, at the desire of his bishop, prior of the canons of St-Quentin at Beauvais. He was then one of the best teachers in
France, and so prepared himself to infuse a new life into the celebrated schools of Chartres, of which city he was appointed bishop in 1090.
No man, perhaps, is better portrayed in his writing than is Ivo in his letters and sermons; in both he appears as a man always faithful to his duties, high-minded, full of zeal and piety, sound in his judgments, a keen jurist, straight-forward, mindful of others’ rights, devoted to the papacy and to his country, at the same time openly disapproving of what he considered
to be wrong; St. Ivo was once imprisoned for a short time for opposing King Philip I’s attempt to leave his wife and marry
another.
Very often Ivo was consulted on theological, liturgical, political, and especially canonical matters. We know that toward the
end of the first millennium, the papacy assumed a more prominent role in matters of ordinary jurisdiction over the Western Church. The papal decrees were a matter of confusion at times, but needed to be understood as legislative acts binding
on the entire Church. St. Ivo made the first compilation of these documents in an eight volume set. Ivo attempted to establish a hierarchy for the reconciliation of discordant laws, a system with methodological import for the rise of scholasticism. His canonical manuscripts and letters referring to moral, liturgical, canonical and dogmatic matters were treasures of
many a monastic library. His views on the efficacy of the sacraments administered by heretics, the relationship between
Church and State, and the sin of simony are still consulted today.
Many times God sends simple saints that inspire us to persevere in our daily routines; other times great saints that suffered
much and were martyred, but in St. Ivo, God produced for His Church a logical and great ecclesiastic legislative thinker to
help sort out the theological and dogmatic problems of the times.

the world. In celebration of all of our different heritages we are asking each family to share a favorite

Story directed by Elizabeth Helfenberger, performed by
adolescents of the Oratory.
