•The following checklist is recommended for flight planning to comply with the 3710 and
includes the steps to complete the Flight Log.
1. EXAMINE ORIGIN: DETERMINE IF TAKEOFF MINIMUMS ARE MET (OPNAV 3710
chapt. 5) BY:
a. Check TAF’s-http://aviationweather.gov/adds/
b. Request DD-175-1-https://fwb.metoc.navy.mil/fwb123/
c. Check NOTAMS https://www.notams.jcs.mil
1. Selecting the lowest published minimums for an approach
you can shoot, check for trouble T, and;
2. Comparing with the following: (check again once you get
ATIS)
a. Standard Instrument Rated Pilot
b. Precision - 200-½ but not less than published mins.
c. Nonprecision - 300-1 but not less than published mins.
2. EXAMINE DESTINATION: CHECK WEATHER AND DETERMINE IF AN ALTERNATE
AIRFIELD IS REQUIRED (OPNAV 3710). Additionally, read any special instructions that
may be contained in the DOD FLIP.
a. Check the FLIP publications for:
•Airfield Operating Hours (IFR Supp (ES)
•Airfield Servicing Hours (ES)
•Airfield Hazards (ES/AP1, NOTAMS)
•Runway Length and location of barriers (arresting gear) (ES/Appr Plates)
•Special Departure/Arrival Procedures (ES/Appr Plates/AP1)
•Special Use Airspace that may impact route (GP/AP1/Enroute
Charts/NOTAMS)
•Availability of Emergency Airfields (Enroute Charts/ES)
•Instrument Approach Availability (ES/Appr Plates/NOTAMS)
•SIDS/STARS (Appr Plates/STARS Pub)
•Local Operations that may affect training availability (ES/AP1/NOTAMS)
•Preferred Routes

RECORD MAGNETIC COURSES and DISTANCES ON FLIGHT LOG

1. Rules for leg entries on the Flight Log:
• a. NAVAID to NAVAID, on and off airways;
• b. Course changes of 6º or more on Victor Airways;
• c. Both ends of a direct route - anytime aircraft is not on an airway;
• d. Any mandatory reporting point.
2. Fill in the NAVAID, frequency, magnetic course, and distance:

a. Magnetic course and distance from the departure airfield to the first fix
(INTERSECTION OR NAVAID) on an airway may be found in
– 1) the Enroute Supplement in the NAVAIDs section of some airports; or,
– 2) on appropriate Approach Plates as Enroute/Feeder Fixes. In the absence
of these two sources,
– 3) measure the distances directly off the Low Altitude Charts and compare
to mileage scale, and use a nearby compass rose on the chart to measure
the course.
b. To determine magnetic course and distance on a direct leg:

8. DETERMINE COMPULSORY REPORTING POINTS
– Determine compulsory reporting points for nonradar environment in the event that
radar contact with ATC is lost, and mark accordingly; e.g.., Fixes are compulsory
reporting points under the following circumstances:

9. COMPUTE GROUND SPEED (GS) USING WIND SIDE OF CR-2, 3, 4, OR 5.
– 1. Using computed GS for the climb, compute the time to first fix.
– 2. Three possibilities concerning your point of level-off exist:

a. Both ends of a direct route
b. Solid triangle at a Fix
a. Crossing the fix at the same point and time as reaching cruise; altitude.
b. Reaching cruise altitude prior to the fix;
c. Reaching cruise altitude after crossing the first fix
3. In most practice problems, 2c is the case. This is referred to as a split leg; part of a
leg is climb and part is cruising. Fuel flow, air speed, ground speed, distance, and
time for climb and cruise must be computed for this leg.
10. CALCULATE ETE’S and LEG FUEL: for each leg and enter in the Flight Log

Rounding procedures: Round miles and minutes off to the nearest whole number for each
calculation (.5 or greater rounds up). Fuel: Any fraction over a pound, round up to the next
5 pounds. Example: 145.2 lbs rounds up to 150 pounds.

11. CALCULATE EFR and compute total: distance, ETE, and Fuel for destination and
alternate
•
12. CALCULATE FUEL REMAINING FROM DESTINATION IAF
•
13. COMPLETE “ALTERNATE, ROUTE, ALT, FUEL , AND TIME” THE DRAFT: LINE OF THE
FLIGHT LOG.
