NHS Season Re-Cap
The Nantucket High School sailing team has had a very busy season! The Whalers hosted the
the Cape and Islands Women’s Fleet Race Championship on Friday, May 20th. With nine visiting
teams, 20 competitors sailed in a very light breeze all afternoon. Six races were completed in a
single division. Visiting teams included Bishop Stang, Martha’s Vineyard, Falmouth, Barnstable,
Sturgis, Dartmouth, Sandwich, Dennis Yarmouth and Saint John Paul. Nantucket sailors Irena
Roggeveen, Virginia Bullington, Paris Fisher, Nora Harrington and Paige Decker all rotated
sailing throughout the event and placed tenth overall for the day.
On Saturday, May 28th, Seniors James Hinson, Morgan Ravenscroft, Paige Decker, Nora
Harrington, Paris Fisher, Callaghan Bartlett, Irena Roggeveen, Dominic Costanzo and coaches
Joe Lloyd and Nick Aswad sailed the NCS J/105, Clio, in the 45th Annual Figawi Race. The team
placed 5th in Division S2 and saw all breeze conditions from 2-22 knots.
Finally, The Whalers wrapped up their season on Sunday, May 29th by hosting the Figawi High
School Invitational out of Great Harbor Yacht Club. Twelve teams from the Cape and Islands
participated in the event, which was sailed just off the Nantucket Boat Basin. Senior captains,
James Hinson and Morgan Ravenscroft, as well as fellow teammates Paige Decker, Callaghan
Bartlett and Paris Fisher rotated sailing throughout the regatta and finished in eighth place.
Hundreds of spectators
enjoyed watching the event!
Congratulations to the NHS
Sailing Team on a
wonderful and successful
season! Many thanks to
Great Harbor Yacht Club for
hosting the team and their
competitors all spring, and
to Head Coach Joe Lloyd
and Assistant Coach Neil
Cocker for their
contributions to the team all
season. We look forward to
having many of the high
school sailors join us this
summer in our 420
programs.

Rebuilding the Fleet
We are excited to announce that NCS has a new fleet-builder fundraising
campaign. The goal of the campaign will be to raise money to replace the aging
fleet of Hunter 140s, which are used by NCS beginner sailors in Polpis Harbor
and are well past the end of their useful life. A fundraising event will be hosted
on Saturday, July 9th at a private home (stay tuned for more details). NCS
aims to have at least three boats paid for prior to the event. One boat under
consideration for the replacement of the Hunter 140s is the RS Quest,
pictured at left. The RS Quest retails at roughly $7500/boat. If you would
like to support this effort or learn more, please contact the NCS Office at
508-228-6600.

Used Sails - Please Donate
We are once again seeking donations of old sails. Last year we were able to send 78 sails to Sea
Bags in Maine as part of a program where NCS tote bags were created in exchange for the used
sails. We hope to be sending another shipment of used sails their way this fall - if you are
looking to get rid of some of your old inventory, please drop the sails by the NCS Office! Follow Us on Social Media
Follow us on Facebook and Instagram! Keep up to date with program
happenings - and general NCS news.
