What is Community Education?
Community Education operates with the belief that schools
belong to the entire community and should serve all
residents by providing lifelong learning opportunities.
It is the goal of Community Education to identify the needs
of the Belle Plaine community and provide corresponding
educational and recreational experiences for all ages by
utilizing available resources. Community Services strives
to communicate our offerings by mailing brochures to all
households, providing a weekly column in the Belle Plaine
Herald, the Community Education Website
(www.belleplaine.k12.mn.us) and by listing activities on
channel 8 of the local cable service.

The Community Education Advisory Council is composed of
members of the community. The council functions in cooperation with Community Education staff in an advisory capacity
to promote the goals and objectives of Community Education.
Members provide valuable feedback from the community
perspective to advise staff on the development of the
department.
SCHOOL CLOSINGS
If inclement weather forces the District #716 schools to start late,
morning Preschool Pals and ECFE class will be cancelled. Afternoon and evening classes and activities will meet as scheduled.
If school is cancelled all Community Education, Preschool Pals
and ECFE class and activities will be cancelled. All facilities
will be closed as well. If school is dismissed early all Community
Education, Preschool Pals and ECFE class and activities for the
remainder of the day and evening are cancelled. All facilities
will be closed as well. Emergency school closings can be found
at www.belleplaine.k12.mn.us and with messages from the district instant alert system. Announcements can also be found on
television channels KSTP 5, KARE 11 and WCCO.

Where To Register
** You can register online at www.belleplaine.k12.mn.us. You can also phone, fax, or mail in your
registration. Payment must be received with registration.
Registration Policy
** To register for a Community Ed class, program or trip complete the form on page 5.
Then either register online, call in your registration, or deliver it to the Community Ed Office.
Once you register, you are responsible for following the registration, cancellation, and facilities
policies.
Reduced Fee Program
** Fees will not prohibit children from participating in most Community Education/Recreation
programs. You may be eligible for financial assistance through the REDUCED FEE PROGRAM.
All requests will be handled by the CE staff and will be held confidential. Some programs are excluded. Please call (952) 873-2411 for more information.
Cancellation Policy
** If you are unable to attend a class, program or trip you registered for, please call the
Community Ed Office at (952) 873-2411 to cancel your reservation. Cancellation refunds will
either be issued as a check or in the form of a class credit.

Preschool Pals
Preschool Pals
Belle Plaine Preschool Pals is a preschool opportunity for children who want to meet new
friends and practice the skills that will help as they enter kindergarten. Our curriculum uses
the State Early Learning Standards as a base and includes curriculums like Creative Curriculum and S.M.A.R.T. activities. Our daily activities include group time, music and motor, art,
cognitive learning time, computers or iPads, small group time, snack and storytime. Teachers
are Becky Luskey, Tracy Witt and Julie Miner.
Fall of 2014 registration will begin on March 17th at 8:00 am for 3 year olds currently attending Preschool Pals. New 3 & 4 year olds may register at the Youth Fair on April 12. Class
options will be announced February 1st.
A $50 non-refundable registration fee must accompany your registration. Scholarships are
available to those who qualify. If you have any questions or would like a scholarship application, please contact Sheri Prokosch at 952-873-2415 ext 5.

Kids Company
Kids Company
Kids Company is the before and after school care program operated through Belle Plaine
Community Education. The program is located at Chatfield Elementary, the central base
is out of the ECFE Parent and Sib-Care classroom. Kids Company is designed to meet the
needs of parents who work earlier or later than regular school hours. Kids Company’s
mission is to provide before and after school care for children K - 6th grade in an environment
that is safe, enjoyable and caring while supporting children’s individual educational and
social development.
The activities will be divided by interest and age appropriateness. The children will
rotate and can choose from a variety of activities. Your child can expect to spend the
day doing arts and crafts, playing games, participating in service learning projects, and
hanging out with friends.

One Time Registration Fee: $25 per family
Kids Company is NOT OPEN over winter break.

Drivers Education
General Information:
The Belle Plaine Community Education
Drivers Education program is for students,
ages 15 - 18, who live or attend school within Belle
Plaine School District 716. The driver’s education program includes classroom instruction and
behind-the-wheel training.
Classroom Instruction: 30 Hours
Classroom includes lecture, class discussion,
videos, written work from the textbook and written
tests. Upon completion, students will be issued a
blue card.
Behind-the-Wheel (BTW): 6 Hours
Behind-the-Wheel allows a student to practice
driving on public streets and highways with an
instructor in a dual control (two brake) car. Please
come in or call Community Education and sign
up for Behind-the-Wheel. Priority will be given to
students based on age. If a student does not receive
Behind-the-Wheel immediately after their class,
please contact Community Education to be placed
on a list once you have received your permit. There
is a $20.00 per hour charge to make up for a missed
Behind-the-Wheel session. You MUST call the instructor or the Community Ed office 952-873-2411
at least 24 hours prior to cancel an appointment.
Upon completion of behind-the-wheel, students
will be issued a white card. A lost or misplaced
white card will cost $10.00 to replace.

BEHIND THE WHEEL INSTRUCTION:
Offered April - July 2014
Anyone interested in taking the Hunter Education/
Firearm Safety course this spring will need to complete
the written part of the course online. The hands-on
portion, called the All Day Field Day, will be offered
on May 3, 2014. Total cost for Online certification with
an All Day Field Day will be $39.95 of which $32.45
will be paid, online, to the Minnesota Department of
Natural Resources. The remaining $7.50 will be paid
to the Belle Plaine Firearms group to cover costs for
the All Day Field Day. NO PAYMENTS ARE TO BE
MADE TO BELLE PLAINE COMMUNITY EDUCATION.

SPRING HUNTER EDUCATION/
FIREARM SAFETY CLASS
Instructions for accessing online Firearm Safety/Hunter Education course:
1. Go to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resource’s Firearms Safety Certification for Youth at: http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/safety/firearms/index.html
2. Once on the DNR site, read through the requirements and costs.
3.
If you are youth ages 11-17, select the link titled “HunterCourse.com”.
a. Once on the site of the Minnesota Hunter Safety Course, select the Youth Hunter Ages 11-17 button.
b. Complete the registration information and begin the course. Payment for the online course ($24.95) and DNR registration fee ($7.50) will be charged when the online portion of the class is passed.
c. Once the online course is successfully completed, pay the fees (will need credit card) and print out a voucher to attend an All Day Field Day. If attending Belle Plaine’s All Day Field Day, see below. If interested in finding other All Day Field Days, go to http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/safety/firearms/index.html and view the Calendar of firearm courses
If an adult (18 and older) select the link titled “click here”.

Abrakadoodle is a fun imaginative art program
for kids in grades K-5 that introduces children
to a wide variety of art materials & techniques.
In this class we’ll explore, paint, clay and 3-D
effects on our art projects. We’ll use clay to
sculpt some peacocks, learn to draw landscapes
and cats. We’ll paint on canvas, and explore
watercolor with special effects! We’ll even
create a 3-D painting. We’ll have lots of colorful
fun! Imaginations will soar!

YOUNG ASTRONAUTS
The Young Astronauts Program is starting up
again! This program first came to Belle Plaine
in the 1980’s and we are excited to be offering
it again. Join us as we discover flight through
hands on engineering challenges and activities.
We will be learning about the forces of flight, the
science behind flying, as well as making our own
flying devices. Just as with tradition we will
be doing the Egg Drop towards the end of the

The workshop that delivers! This workshop
enables students to prepare for the ACT college
admission exam. Participants gain valuable
insight into the ACT through a close examination
of each type of question. The workshop teaches

tips. Also provides suggestions for post workshop test preparation. A competitive score can
bring new opportunities for college bound students. This test preparation workshop coaches

TIGER CUBS BASKETBALL
The Tiger Cubs Basketball Program is for boys
and girls in Kindergarten thru 2nd grade. The
program goal is to introduce and develop basic
basketball skills. Each practice will conclude
with a short game and fun activity. Gym shoes
are required and should be carried in. Kindergarten and first graders receive a basketball and
second graders receive a t-shirt.

T-ball is a low-organized game designed for youth
skill development. Learn the basic fundamentals of
baseball/softball. In this program the emphasis is
on fun rather than competition. In Squirts, the basic
structure of the game will be introduced as well as
the skill of hitting a coach pitched ball. We will have
1-2 coach meetings prior to the start of the program
and coaching resources will be provided. Coaches
are volunteer parents.

LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL
Little League Softball is the first formal softball
program for girls 9-12 (grades 3-6) years old.
The 3rd & 4th grade league uses both players
and coaches as pitchers and the 5th & 6th grade
uses just player pitchers. The player-pitchers
are introduced to softball pitching fundamentals.
Little League Softball attempts to continue the
development of softball players, continuing the
basic structure and the skills needed to enjoy success. The emphasis is on fun rather than competition in this program. Both divisions will do some
local traveling. Parents are responsible for child’s
transportation. Coaches are volunteer parents.
Little League Baseball is designed to continue the
development of young baseball players. The 3rd
& 4th grade league uses pitching machines and the
5th & 6th grade league uses players as pitchers.
Although advanced skills and strategies will be
introduced, the primary focus is still to have fun.
All players are requested to wear gray pants. Most
sporting goods stores carry these. Coaches are
volunteer parents. The older division will do some
local traveling. Parents are responsible for child’s
transportation.

Youth Recreation
TAE KWON DO
This is the Korean martial art of Tae Kwon Do. Students will learn self defense, self control, history,
sparring and techniques needed to test in the beginning level of Tae Kwon Do. Advanced students will
continue on at their own pace. Students attending class in BP are also welcome to train at other Kroells
Karate Club locations at no additional cost.

Zumba, it’s the hottest aerobic fitness craze, that’s all about dancing, party-style, to exhilarating music.
A Zumba class is a full hour of continuous dancing to Latin and international social-dance music. It
provides a high level of aerobic exercise and is structured according to the same principles as interval
training, alternating between fast and slow musical selections. But unlike most fitness classes, Zumba
involves virtually no talking. You’re having so much fun dancing around that you don’t realize you’re

AAA SMART DRIVER COURSE
Drivers age 55 and older can save 10% on their auto insurance premiums by attending an AARP
Smart Driver Course. The class offers methods that help compensate for normal age-related hearing,
vision and physical changes. No driving or written test is required. Those attending receive and follow along in a workbook, view videos and receive additional information from a qualified volunteer
instructor. Each person receives a Completion Certificate at the end of the class. If you have never
attended an AARP Smart Driver Course or a 55 Alive Defensive Driving Course you must first attend
an 8-hour course, held over two days, four hours each day. After that, you only need to take a 4-hour
class once every 3 years to retain your insurance discount. Please bring your driver’s license and
AARP card to class. You do not have to be an AARP member to take this class.

KAREN’S MYSTERY QUILT #10
If you like quilting, but hate to drag your sewing machine to class, this is the “class” for you.
This will be a mystery quilt, so you won’t know
what the final project will look like until the last
stitch has been made. Clues will be mailed to
you (please provide your email or home mailing address). Follow the weekly directions in
the clues and by the end of nine weeks (approximately) you will have a completed quilt or
quilt top. We will end this class with a dessert
show and tell. The first clue will be mailed/
emailed during the week of January 27th. The
show and tell date and place will be announced

Church Basement Ladies in “The Last (Potluck) Supper” It is 1979, the day of the church’s Centennial Celebration, and past parishioners have gathered to share hotdish, bars, and stories from the last 100
years. As the women work in the kitchen, these shared memories burst into life through a series of flashback. Travel back to 1897, and meet Vivian’s grandmother, one of the founding members of the church;
see Karin as a newlywed, cautiously navigating her way through the politics of the kitchen; and be there
on that day, in 1944, when Mavis first barreled her way through the swinging door. As they time-jump
through a Century, these ladies manage to serve up a rib-tickling panorama of the changes in the kitchen,
without spilling a drop of their egg coffee! Meanwhile, the Centennial Celebration continues on the lawn.
But the celebration is bittersweet. Times are tough in this small farm community, and hard decisions will
have to be made. But, once again, your favorite church basement ladies handle it all with grave, hilarity,
and some brand new musical numbers that are sure to get your toes tapping. Lunch is included and will be
a chicken buffet.

We are excited to announce that in this section you will
be able to find lots of information for our Early Learners! Early Childhood Family Education, Early Childhood
Special Education, Early Childhood Screening and Belle
Plaine Preschool Pals are working together to provide you
with learning opportunities for all children Birth to PreKindergarten. We all believe that the early years are
learning years and we want to support you during this very
important time!
Together we can provide:
*classes, programs and services to families with children birth to pre-kindergarten to
encourage parent involvement
*parents with support networks, community resources and education as well as opportunities for friendships
*support to encourage strong family communication and positive parent attitudes
*teachers that are licensed in early childhood or parent education that work to begin a
positive school-home partnership.
Individually:
Early Childhood Special Education provides information and support to families who have a child with developmental needs including communication, cognitive, social emotional, motor and self help skills. If you
have questions or concerns about your child’s development you can contact the Belle Plaine School District
at 952-873-2401 or you can also visit the Help Me Grow website at http://www.helpmegrowmn.org This
website not only provides developmental information, but it also gives referral information.
Early Childhood Family Education provides opportunities for all families with children between the ages
of birth to pre-kindergarten. We offer a variety of classes and events that support families and promote
positive parent involvement and home school connections.
Early Childhood Screening is a free state required service that checks your child’s development and provides you with district and community resources that are available to your family. Screenings are best done
between 3 and 4 years of age.
Belle Plaine Preschool Pals is rated 4 stars by Parent Aware and provides a variety of independent class
options for children that turn 3 or 4 by September 1. Children will meet new friends and practice the skills
that will help them as they enter kindergarten.

What is ECFE? Early Childhood Family Education is a state funded program that is run through
Belle Plaine Community Education. ECFE works to begin an effective and satisfying school-home
partnership. We offer regular series classes and special events for ALL families with children ages
birth to pre-kindergarten. ECFE strives to help build positive parent-child relationships.

Who is ECFE for? ECFE is for any and all moms, dads, and their children (birth to pre-kindergaten).
Whether you are a single parent, a teen parent, a stay at home parent, a grandparent, a guardian, or
even a daycare provider you are invited to come to our classes with your child/children.
Why should I come to ECFE? ECFE focuses on age-appropriate child development as well as parent
and family education. Being a mom or dad is one of the most important jobs you will ever have. Come
and share information with other parents about raising your child/children. Come to learn more about
your child/children and you. Come to meet other parents and learn that you are not alone in the many
joys and challenges of raising children.
Where is ECFE? All Belle Plaine ECFE classes are located at 330 South Market Street at Chatfield
Elementary.
When are the ECFE classes? Classes are offered throughout the school year and you can choose
from daytime classes or evening classes. Class listings are found in the Community Education brochure. If you have not received a brochure please call (952)873-2411. To register for classes go to
www.belleplaine.k12.mn.us.

What about my other children? We offer sibling care to children not in series classes for a nominal
fee. Children are under the care of experienced classroom assistants. The charge for registered children per session is $25.00. Sibling Care is not available for Special Events or once a month classes.
Drop in slots are available for $5, but we must have a one day notice to ensure proper teacher-child
ratios. Siblings will join the class for snack and remain in the classroom the remainder of class.

information. This website will provide you not only with developmental information, but it also
gives you referral information.
2. Visit Early Childhood staff at scheduled Open Play dates or other Early Childhood classes or
events.
3. Share your concerns with an Early Childhood staff.

The Belle Plaine Early Childhood Special Education team is ready if you need them.
Early Childhood Developmental Screening is a FREE check of a child’s development, vision and hearing, growth, health history and immunizations. This screening is best done between 3-4 years of age.
The screening also helps a school district identify children who may benefit from district and community
resources available to help in their development.
Screening appointments are offered intermittently throughout the school year. To schedule an appointment visit the school website www.belleplaine.k12.mn.us, choose the Early Learning Services tab, then
choose the Early Childhood Developmental Screening tab. There you will find more information about
screening and a form to fill out and submit to schedule your appointment. If you do not have internet
access call 952-378-2454 to schedule your childs’ appointment.
Preschool Pals
Early Childhood Developmental Screening
Belle Plaine Preschool Pals is a preschool opportunity for children who want to meet new
friends and practice the skills that will help as they enter kindergarten. Our curriculum uses
the State Early Learning Standards as a base and includes curriculums like Creative Curriculum and S.M.A.R.T. activities. Our daily activities include group time, music and motor, art,
cognitive learning time, computers or iPads, small group time, snack and storytime. Teachers
are Becky Luskey, Tracy Witt and Julie Miner.
Fall of 2014 registration will begin on March 17th at 8:00 am for 3 year olds currently attending Preschool Pals. New 3 & 4 year olds may register at the Youth Fair on April 12. Class
options will be announced February 1st.
A $50 non-refundable registration fee must accompany your registration. Scholarships are
available to those who qualify. If you have any questions or would like a scholarship application, please contact Sheri Prokosch at 952-873-2415 ext 5.

PAC is the acronym for Parent Advisory Council. PAC helps plan some
of the big special events, assists with fundraising efforts, and makes
programming suggestions. We meet once every other month on Mondays from 5:30-7:00. Free childcare is provided. If you are interested
in attending a meeting or volunteering at an event please call Sheri at
952-873-2415. Everyone is welcome to attend at anytime.
This year we have a lot of fun things planned. The PAC goal is to provide families with fun activities, foster a sense of community and help
families make memories together. Please consider coming to any of our
sponsored events or any Early Childhood class. These options are not
only a great way for you to get connected with our school and community, but it is a great way to introduce your child to other children and
help them feel comfortable in school!

2032? It seems like a long way off, but it will
be here before you know it and ECFE would
love to help you through this important journey.
Belle Plaine Schools understands that parent
involvement is important to a student’s educational success. ECFE wants to begin a
relationship with you and your child. You can
call us to set up a time to visit with you and
your baby. A parent educator will bring you
a free baby bag filled with things for you and
your baby as well as answer any questions that
you may have about your child. Be sure to let
us know if you have a sibling at home when we
visit because we will have something for them

Walking, talking, exploring and testing! Each
day you witness amazing learning and growth
changes and face new challenges as your child
explores his/her emerging independence. In this
reader workshop class, you and your child will
spend the first part together exploring different
books through many different activities and an
interactive group time. The second part of class
you will have a chance to talk with other parents
and a parent facilitator about a variety of toddler
topics that you may face. Parents and children
will separate for discussion time.
Do you need an energy boost to keep up with
your ever curious 1 year old that is on the move.
We have a fun and safe spot for your little one to
explore and move while you have an opportunity
to connect with other families in our community.
After 35 minutes of exploring and mingling,
families will join a short interactive group time
before parents gather with a parent educator to
discuss community offerings, joys, concerns, and
age appropriate information. Your child will remain in the same room with you the entire time.

The reptiles and amphibians are coming to Belle
Plaine! Come, look, learn and touch these fascinating animals. Jamie from the Reptiles and Amphibian Discovery Zoo has worked at places like the
Jacksonville Zoo, Busch Gardens and Disney’s
Animal Kingdom and then in 2009 he started the
Reptiles and Amphibian Discovery Zoo in Owatonna. He will bring a variety of animals and share
interesting things about these creatures. You must
pre-register for this event by January 21.

In this class your child can come to school all
by themselves. They will explore some special
books and do projects that go along with the
theme of the week. Children will need to bring a
backpack and be potty trained to be in the class.

about to make the big step into kindergarten? If
so, this event is just for you! ECFE is planning
a special party. Each participant is encouraged
to invite their parents, grandparents and special
friends to this memorable event, filled with fun
and surprises. A reception will follow the ceremony. Please bring your child to the ECFE room

We have toys to check out just like a book!!!
Did you know that we have a Toy Lending Library in our Community?
If you didn’t you should go to the Belle Plaine Public Library to check
it out. There is an assortment of items including book and prop combinations, puzzles, creative dramatic play, science, musical toys, computer games and audio CDs. Toys can be checked out for three weeks at
a time and must be returned in clean and complete condition. This is a
great opportunity to have special toys for grandchildren coming to visit
or Daycare Providers to provide a unique experience for their daycare
children. The Toy Lending Library is made possible by the Belle Plaine
Friends of the Library and ECFE.
STORY TIME AT THE LIBRARY
ECFE is going to the library! Belle Plaine Public Library and ECFE
are coming together to provide you with fun and interactive story times.
We will read stories, sing songs and play games as we explore a variety
of books and poems. Be sure to come and visit us at the library and
don’t forget your library card for checking out books, movies or toys.
