Wine & Hosts In Loving Memory of Margaret Hopkins Rose for Life In Loving Memory of William Campbell Meehan (5th Anniversary) Love, His Family July 31, 2016 4 Stewardship A Way of Life This Week’s Readings Good stewards follow the advice of St. Paul and conduct themselves—by wise use of their time and talents—in a way worthy of the Gospel of Christ. “If you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.” First Friday August 5, 2016 There will be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament following the 9:00 a.m. Mass, until 3:00 p.m., in the Chapel of the Holy Cross located in the Parish Ministry Building. Nocturnal Adoration Friday, August 5, 2016 Living Stewardship St. Agnes Nocturnal Adoration Society will meet in the Holy Cross Chapel from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Come and pray before the Blessed Sacrament. We are grateful this week for all stewards who receive God’s mercy in such a profound way that it moves them to share mercy with others, especially during this Jubilee year. First Saturday August 6, 2016 Sharing One’s Material Resources in the Parish On the first Saturday of the month, devotions to honor Our Lady of Fatima will take place at 8:30 a.m. followed by the 9:00 a.m. Mass. All are welcome to join in praying the Rosary. Communion for the Gluten Intolerant Because of the vacation schedules of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Communion under both species is suspended during the summer months. For those who have gluten intolerance, a chalice with the Precious Blood will be ministered at the 5:00 p.m. Mass on Saturday evening. This will go through the summer. Please also know that low gluten hosts are also available at all Masses. One should stop in the sacristy before Mass to arrange for this type of host to be consecrated. Novena to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Monday - after 9:00 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Masses Rosary After the 9:00 a.m. Mass each Monday through Saturday in the Cathedral except on First Saturday when it is recited at 8:30 a.m. All are welcome. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament You are invited to join us each Friday for some quiet reflection and prayer in the Holy Cross Chapel following the 9:00 a.m. Mass concluding with Benediction at 3:00 p.m. Please Note: The 9:00 a.m. Mass on weekdays will be held in the Lower Hall starting Monday, August 1st, due to the noise generated from the exterior work being done on the Cathedral. Thank you for your patience. EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME From the Rector — Dear Parishioners: I take this opportunity to update you on the work that is taking place on the exterior of the Cathedral. As you may recall, we had an engineering study done in the spring of 2014 after a four-foot stone cross fell from the building. While the report indicated that the building was safe, it also identified work that needed to be done on all four sides of the exterior with the south side of the Cathedral needing the greatest attention. We commenced work on the south façade in the fall of 2015 and it has been continuing ever since. The work that has been done has included the replacement of a number of the limestone caps, repair of the copper roof of the east tower, replacement of the doors and windows on the east tower, installing new flashing beneath all of the limestone caps, fortification of the interior wall of the west tower, replacement of some of the exterior bricks, pointing the bricks and doing a general cleaning of the exterior. I am pleased to report that the work on this façade is nearing completion. While some of the work that was done was not anticipated, there was other work that we anticipated having to do that turned out not to be needed. The end result was that the job came in pretty close to budget. And while this work was not originally planned when we initiated our capital campaign several years ago to restore and enhance the interior of the Cathedral, we went over goal in our campaign and the extra money raised has been able to fund the work on this façade. As always, I am most grateful for the generosity that allowed this to happen. The question that we have been facing over the past two months or so has been what to do in regard to the other three sides of the building. It is work that needs to be done. There would be a savings if the scaffolding could just be redeployed in another area rather than having it taken away and then brought back at a later date. I recently met with our Parish Finance Committee and apprised them of the situation and asked for their counsel as to whether we should address the need now or put it off for some future time. Much of their recommendation was based on the belief that while everything is currently safe, the longer we wait to do repairs the greater the possibility that the conditions of the building might change. Their recommendation was that we go ahead with the repairs, and it is that recommendation that we will follow. Work will begin in the coming days on the west façade of the building. A bridge will be installed over the sidewalk along this façade as well as the Clinton Avenue sidewalk. This will enable the scaffolding to be set in place and ensure the safety of people walking along these paths. Please also know, that because the work will be even closer to the sanctuary and there is a fair amount of noise that is generated with this type of work, we will be moving the 9:00 a.m. Mass (and only the 9:00 a.m. Mass) to the Lower Hall. Since the workers only start at 8:15 a.m. and they take a lunch break during the 12:10 p.m. Mass, there are no noise issues with the other Masses. As in the past, work will be suspended if and when a funeral is scheduled. I thank you for your patience with this work. Let us hope for another mild winter so work suspensions can be kept to a minimum. Sincerely yours, Father Bill Koenig 5 July 31, 2016 6 Religious Education Registration for 2016-2017 Anyone with a child entering 1st grade in September should have registered for our Level 1 Religious Education class.
