The VYCC is a non-profit service, conservation, and education organization. Our mission is to teach individuals to take personal responsibility for all of their actions. We accomplish this mission by forming small teams of young people who work with excellent adult leaders to complete highpriority conservation projects. The challenges and experiences that each crew must overcome to be successful create an ideal setting to develop leadership, teamwork, and communication skills. Each year, the Corps hires nearly 300 young people to manage state parks, build trails, restore rivers and streams, and improve community spaces. 2 A Message from the Chair, Board of Directors As we celebrate our twentieth year of operation, our many achievements have been made possible by the generous support, encouragement, and hard work of the youth, families and friends of the Corps. Together, we have created a dynamic, nationally-respected organization that has transformed the lives of over 4,000 young people by teaching them to take personal responsibility for all of their actions. As stewards of the Vermont landscape, our projects have protected and enhanced countless trails, parks, and wilderness areas, helping our state to maintain its unique and precious character. Along the way, we have inspired individuals and groups to create similar organizations in communities across the globe. Four years ago, we identified the need for a year-round training facility that would enable us to strengthen the quality of our training and to serve more youth. We crafted a bold vision, and in partnership with the Richmond Land Trust, raised almost $2.8 million and restored the historic West Monitor Barn in Richmond, which officially opened in September 2005. I’m pleased to report that in 2005, our generous donors and project sponsors helped us to reach our annual fund goals. Their support also brought us to within $900,000 of our $3.7 million capital campaign goal. With your continued support and the new friendships we are building, we’re confident we can continue to achieve our financial goals. As we enter our third decade of operation, the Vermont Youth Conservation Corps is in a period of exceptional growth. Looking ahead, the continued generosity of our supporters remains essential to our future success. On behalf of the Board, I extend to you our thanks and gratitude for your support. Together, we will continue to achieve great things! Ron Redmond Chair Board of Directors 3 Corps Member Stories Our ultimate goal is to be able to offer the Vermont Youth Conservation Corps experience to every young adult who wishes to enroll. In 2005, we enrolled youth from 97 Vermont towns, who completed over 110,000 hours of service as stewards of Vermont’s land. However, these youth accomplished much more than priority conservation projects. They developed leadership skills and responsibility, and learned the value of teamwork. The stories below are just two examples of the 277 people whose lives were changed by the VYCC experience in 2005. “Being a member of a crew is like being given a family. It is a chance to develop relationships with people whom you’ve never met and who have had experiences very different from your own. You also just get to be yourself, there’s nothing to hide and nothing to lose.” -Erin McCreary, Roving Crew Member John, 2005 Roving Crew Member Coming into his first session with the VYCC, John was eager and excited about conservation work and couldn’t wait to spend four weeks living in the woods with a Roving Crew. However, within the first couple of days John’s attitude turned sour and he shut himself off from the rest of his Crew. He stopped smiling and was having difficulty being on time for scheduled chores and activities. The Leaders tried to engage and encourage John but he continued to separate himself from the crew. When one of the Leaders overheard another Corps Member mention that John was considering getting himself dismissed from the program by intentionally not following policies, he took immediate action. In his conversation with John he finally discovered the reason for his behavior. John was incredibly homesick. The Leader listened carefully and shared strategies that he had used when he felt homesick. From that moment on John completely turned his attitude around. He was always on time and ready for the task at hand. He invested himself in the work project and was quickly voted the “hardest worker” by his peers. John started to smile more often and opened up to the crew and his Leaders. He successfully completed the first session of his summer and had such a great experience that he went on to spend another four weeks with a different crew. John gained a tremendous sense of confidence through his experience, and his comments in the end of the session selfassessment capture the essence of his growth, “I believe that being involved with the VYCC for a total of eight weeks this summer has helped me to be more open-minded to a lot of new things and I especially am more patient and understanding after this experience. I am glad that I didn’t give up so that I could get all of this out of the VYCC.” 44 VYCC By The Numbers: 2005 Crew Members Field Volunteers AmeriCorps Members Corps Members in Training Board of Directors Year Round Program Staff Year Round Support Staff AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteers 277 41 22 13 13 8 5 3 Females Males 46 % 54 % Vermont Residents At-Risk Youth College, College-Bound, Non-At Risk High At-Risk Youth 91 % 62 % 38% 22 % Emily, 2005 Wilderness Crew Member Emily spent four life-changing weeks as a Corps Member on a Wilderness Crew this summer. Emily grew up with an unstable home life, and ended up in foster care at the age of 13. By the time she joined VYCC she had lived in over 10 different foster homes and had recently begun living with her biological mother. She had also recently dropped out of high school. In the first few days of the VYCC season, Emily’s attitude was on a downward track and soon she had two “write-ups” and was very close to losing her position on the crew. After a few discussions with her Crew Leaders, Emily started to realize that they weren’t being mean or targeting her unfairly; they were simply enforcing the rules. Once she internalized that the Leaders truly wanted her to have a successful experience, her attitude turned around and she became a leader on the crew, voicing the importance of the policies and motivating her fellow Corps Members. Emily’s focus also changed. Admittedly when she arrived she was here for one reason and one reason only, money. However, her transition is best expressed in her end-of-season evaluation, “The VYCC is about much more than money, it’s about meeting new people, building a good community with people you barely know, and building good communication skills.” Emily began to enjoy the hard work and was dedicated to getting the job done right. At the end of the four weeks she said, “This was the biggest accomplishment of my life and I am proud that I finished such a big project with a great crew and great Crew Leaders.” Her Crew Leaders said, “Emily went home changed and had a very successful experience, possibly the first in years.” 55 Project Profiles Quechee Gorge Visitor’s Center Working with the Town of Hartford, and funded by a grant from the Vermont Agency of Transportation, the VYCC spent its second summer working to complete the Quechee Gorge Visitor’s Center Trail, which leads pedestrians from the Visitor’s Center to an overlook at the gorge. Roving Crew 13 picked up where the previous summer’s VYCC crew left off, and spent two weeks constructing a switchback trail from the Quechee Gorge Visitor’s Center to the end of the section of the trail completed the previous summer. The installation of hardpack gravel surfacing was required to reach a 5% grade, and the new handicapped accessibile trail is expected to be used by thousands of tourists each year. Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge In partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Lake Champlain Basin Program, the VYCC once again fielded a crew at the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge in 2005. This is the seventh consecutive season a VYCC crew has completed water quality and trail maintenance work within the refuge in Swanton, VT. Roving Crew 11 spent the entirety of their four-week session working on the creation of a 200-foot boardwalk and the construction of 2,500 feet of new trail. These improvements will protect the habitat and provide school groups, wildlife enthusiasts, and the visiting public with more opportunities to enjoy the lands surrounding the refuge’s new headquarters building. Appalachian Trail - Thundering Falls Section Wilderness Crews 1 and 3 worked on the Thundering Falls Section of the Appalachian Trail for a total of eight weeks in partnership with the Green Mountain Club. The project is part of a major effort to relocate the trail off Thundering Brook Road, and included constructing a new section of the Appalachian Trail by defining a corridor, building rock stairs, waterbars, stone structures, and hardening the trail between Thundering Brook Road and River Road in the town of Killington. Approximately 0.3 miles of new trail was constructed, and the VYCC looks forward to continuing this relocation project in 2006. 66 Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge North Hero State Park Burlington Community Crew VYCC Youth Leadership, Education and Training Center Branbury State Park Montpelier Community Crew Silver Lake State Park Quechee Gorge Visitor’s Center Trail Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historic Park Thundering Falls Section of Appalacian Trail Emerald Lake State Park State Parks managed by VYCC Newfane Town Forest Select Work Projects 2005 Project Locations (by town)* Service to Vermont (Hours) Project Sites Project Sponsors Individual Crews State & National Parks National Disaster Relief Crews 110,996 130 43 26 6 1 (Hurricanes Katrina and Wilma) *Towns may contain more than one project site 77 Financial Reports and Funders 77% of our annual operating budget is funded by our project sponsors, and we are grateful to all of the organizations who partner with us to provide Vermont’s youth with high priority conservation projects that foster leadership, build character (and muscles!), and provide meaningful employment for hundreds of young people. Thank You! 17 In 2005 the VYCC moved into its permanent headquarters, the West Monitor Barn, now referred to as the Vermont Youth Leadership, Education, & Training Center. Construction is approximately 80% complete. Just over $900,000 (or roughly 25% of the project cost) remains to be raised. “We are so close to reaching this goal! Once the Training Center is complete, the VYCC will be able to offer year-round leadership, conservation and environmental education to hundreds of Vermont youth each year.” - Thomas Hark VYCC Founding President In addition to hosting VYCC programs, the facility is available for rent to for large and small events such as weddings and corporate functions. To make a gift to help us wrap up our capital campaign, or for rental information, please contact Katey Gordon, Community Relations Director, at (802) 434-3969 ext 111 or katey@ vycc.org. The Today’s Youth, Tomorrow’s Leaders capital campaign is a model partnership between the Richmond Land Trust, whose focus is on preserving a Vermont icon and a structure of national historic significance, and the VYCC, whose goal is to take the reconstructed barn and turn it into an education and training center for youth statewide. “We didn’t want the barn to sit like a museum. We really needed it to be returned to productive use and the VYCC was a perfect match. What’s really unique about this project is that we have a partnership between two organizations...it’s really a model for land conservation, historic preservation, and youth development” - Jim Feinson, Richmond Land Trust Co-Chair, Capital Campaign Committee President, Gardener’s Supply Company Capital Campaign Financial Summary Expenses* Revenue Cash and pledges (pre-2005) Cash and pledges (2005) In kind donations (all) Total Revenue (as of 12/31/05) $1,878,722 678,731 221,278 $2,778,371 Historical Barn reconstruction Training Center construction Land & related costs Campaign expense Planning & design Interest; equipment Total Expenses 18 $1,338,729 1,341,778 530,539 308,028 129,148 51,778 $3,700,000 9 With contributions big and small, the extraordinary support of our friends enables each of the youth that enroll in the VYCC to return to their everyday lives with a better understanding of the importance of education, teamwork, and personal responsibility, in addition to the knowledge that they have participated in the stewardship of Vermont’s landscape.
