January 2015 - Augustana Lutheran Church
The Trumpeter January 2015 Volume 23, Issue 1 Augustana Lutheran Church, Sioux City, Iowa From the Pastor Reflections: At the end of the year, many people reflect on that year as a way of trying to make sense of horrible events and reliving good events. We have much for which to give thanks to God for things which happened in 2014. In March 2014 I began my fifteenth year as the pastor of Augustana Lutheran Church. It continues to be a great honor for me to be your pastor! It also continues to be fun to be your pastor. Our 2010 babies continue to be good role models for the several babies born in 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014. It is such a blessing to this congregation that these kids and their parents are so active. Thanks be to God! Baptisms: Ava Elizabeth Baker, 4/19/14; Gemma Lea Harry, 5/18/14; Quinn May Liberto, 8/24/14; Mila Jane Sachie Coles, 9/21/14; Isaiah Keith Renneke, 9/28/14; and Corinne Ara Anderson, 12/21/14. Affirmation of Baptism: Nicole Marie McGlothlen, Joshua David Midland, and Abigail Jean Parker, 10/26/14. Member Funerals/Memorial Services: Woody Rask, 2/5/14; Don Mohan, 2/11/14; Doris Watson, 5/15/14; Donna Grell, 9/4/14; and Beverly Harris, 9/20/14. High School Graduations: Greer Annon Macfarlane, Nicole Rae Page, and Ross Patrick Peterson. New Members: Joshua & Jennifer (Seger) Harry, 6/15/14. Member Wedding: Dawn Kowalke and Jamison Painter, 8/2/14. While reflecting is good and sometimes painful, I look forward to a renewed sense of cheerful giving to the mission of the church as people seriously look at their offerings. I look ahead with eager anticipation to discovering what the Holy Spirit has in mind for us in 2015 and beyond. And I look forward to discovering that together with you. I am especially excited to looking forward to our yearlong celebration of 125 Years at Sixth and Court Streets. Blessings to all in 2015! Adult Education What do you know about the religion of Muslims? Did you know the religion is call Islam? Did you know that we share biblical stories with Muslims? Adult Education meets in the Augsburg Room from 9:00-10:00. The Trumpeter—January 2015 Mission Team H I G H L I G H T S Finance Mission Team The Finance Mission Team has a two-fold purpose—to oversee the financial receipts and disbursements of the congregation and to prepare a financial Mission Plan each year. We plan to safely secure the offerings, count them and deposit them in the bank. The amounts are then posted to the individual member accounts by the office administrator who also prepares individual statements on request. Payments of bills are made by authorization in the Mission Plan or by request of the sponsoring Mission Team. As with most congregations our offerings are not keeping up with our mission needs. To date we are about $7,000 short but have been able to borrow from our own savings accounts to keep the bills current. We are “robbing Peter to pay Paul” so to speak, as it comes from our capital improvement savings. It is a challenge to meet the mission of Augustana, but it will be done. Anyone interested in helping with this mission team please let us know. Open Positions on Congregation Council At our Annual Meeting in January, we will elect people to fill three positions on the Council. Currently two of these positions are filled by Krystal Gough and Dick Lindblom. The open position was created when Paul Olson and his family moved to North Dakota. Both Krystal and Dick are eligible for election to second terms. Page 2 60th Lucia Festival Steffe Sea reigned as the 2014 Lucia at the 60th Lucia Festival Sunday at Augustana Lutheran Church. Her attendants were Abbie Parker and Nicole McGlothlen. Steffe wore the traditional wreath of lighted candles on her head, as she and her attendants served cookies following the smorgasbord meal. Star boys, wearing hats with stars and carrying a star wand, accompanied Lucia and her attendants. The star boys were Elliott Swenson and Dawson Trobaugh. Shannon Peterson and Angela Iversen, accompanied by Heidi Sea, sang the Lucia Song, and Shelley Hexom read the Lucia story. The Lucia Festival originated in Sweden where, according to legend, Lucia was a medieval saint who carried food and drink to the hungry in the province of Varmland during a period of famine. Lucia stands today as a symbol of light and hope to all humankind. Dave Madsen served as master of ceremonies and Pastor Del Olivier led those in attendance in carol singing to conclude the festival. Tusen Tak! For us non-Swedes: “Thousand thanks” to all who participated in Advent and Christmas worship and activities and to those who helped set up, take down, decorate, and redecorate. The Trumpeter—January 2015 Page 3 Epiphany The Epiphany of Our Lord and the Epiphany Season The Christmas season (a full twelve days) ends on January 6 which is celebrated as the Epiphany of Our Lord. The word “epiphany” means “manifestation.” It is the day we observe as the day that Jesus Christ was revealed to the nations. Most often the Church remembers the magi, the wise men from the East who visited the young Son of God perhaps at the age of two. We get that story from the Gospel of Matthew. On January 11 we observe the Baptism of Our Lord. It is our custom to have the Baptism Faith Stepping Stone during which we bless those families whose children were baptized since the previous Baptism of Our Lord. Subsequent Sundays after Epiphany emphasize the deepened baptismal life. Baptism is a call, and on the second Sunday after Epiphany the readings emphasize the calls of Samuel and Nathanael. On the third Sunday after Epiphany the lectionary turns to the call to baptismal living, as the fishermen brothers are called by Jesus to costly discipleship. On the fourth Sunday the demonic and unclean aspects of our lives—names that often accurately describe us—are cast out as the new name of Christ is place on us. On the fifth Sunday the emphasis turns to the healing and serving done in Jesus’ name, as the community deepens baptismal living and serving, all grounded in the preaching of the Gospel. Finally, in the Transfiguration of Jesus, what had only been heard by Jesus at his Baptism (God speaking of him as God’s beloved) is now heard by the disciples too. Let us work together across the nation to tackle hunger and poverty. It has become a powerful movement that is transforming the time around the Super Bowl weekend in to the nation’s largest celebration of giving and serving. Be part of this movement of sharing God’s love with those in need. On February 3, (Super Bowl Sunday) the youth will be available with Soup Kettles to receive donations to feed the hungry in Siouxland. The money will be donated to Interfaith Resources, who provide food for local food banks. Non-perishable foods may also be donated. These will be distributed by the St. Thomas Food Bank. Much to the chagrin of his wife, he gets silly sometimes. Take, for instance, when he sees a mechanical Dala horse to ride at the SwedishAmerican Institute in Minneapolis. He's got to pose for a picture, right? His colleague, the Rev. David Halaas, pastor at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Sioux City was all too happy to photograph the moment.
