“BRIDGES TO THE
FUTURE”
Dr. J. A. Reed, Jr.
D
uring the month of
August, emphasis is
placed upon the Children
and Youth Ministry of our
church.
Our Annual
“Youth for Christ” Parade
and Revival are scheduled
for this month. I’m sure
that all of our members
will be involved in these
major activities as we continue to celebrate our
church’s 100th Anniversary.
Remember, the
youth are the future of our
church and it is important
that we support them in
their endeavor.
Bridges to the future
are vital for the Fairview
Family. The bridges we
build today can take us
safely in the unknowns of
tomorrow. We are building bridges to the future, as
a church, when we spend
much of our time teaching
and training our youth. To
fail to build these bridges
is to fail in the mission
God has given us.
Every bridge needs
certain basic elements if it
is to achieve its purpose. It
must have a strong foundation. The bridges Fairview
are building with our
young people have a perfect foundation that never
will fail.
We are building on the
witness of the Living
Word, the Lord Jesus
Christ, and the Written
Word, and the Written
Word reveals the Living
Word. The Word reveals
all truth.
The Written Word and
the Living Word are perfect revelations of our eternal God. They will energize us as we build bridges
to the future. What better
foundation could the lives
of our youth be built on
than the Word of God.
This foundation will never
fail.
That is the task of our
Children and Youth Ministry.
The foundation is
strong; the design is sure.
We must have the diligence and strength to build
these bridges. The courage
of heart and the strength of
conviction are needed to
construct the lives or our
young people in Christian
maturity.
The plea from your Pastor
is for us to join hands and
hearts together as we
build these bridges to the
glory of God!

THE FAIRVIEWAN -100 YEARS
FAIRVIEW ATTENDS NATIONAL BAPTIST CONGRESS of CE
I enrolled in the Laymen Department as usual and
took a revised and virtually new Seminar called “Biblical
Manhood”. The Facilitator was National Laymen President Harold Simmons and as usual he was superb. I attended our Missions, Education, and Evangelism Luncheon. I also attended as many of the functions outside my
Division as I possible could. That included hearing the
Dean of the Congress, Dr. George Waddles of Chicago,
give his Address and Congress President, Dr. R. B.
Holmes, of Tallahassee, Florida, give his Annual Address
as well. I went to the President’s Banquet on Thursday
night where I saw our beloved National President, Dr.
William J. Shaw, and heard N.A.A.C.P National President
Ben Jealous give the keynote address. Bro. Jealous is the
youngest president in the history of the N.A.A.C.P at 31
years of age and hails from the state of California. To say
that he was impressive in his remarks would be an understatement.
For those of you who do not know, our own Pastor
Reed serves as Fifth Vice President of the Congress and
was announced to the mass in attendance as such as he
marched in the Presidential Processional with the Vice
Presidents and humbly took his place on stage, in rank,
during the National Congress President’s, Dr. R. B.
Holmes, Jr., Annual Address on Thursday afternoon. On
Thursday night, he presided over the session of the meeting of the mass body.
I was and am so proud of Pastor and I let him know
that. I told him that I saw him up on that stage “showing
off,” and he chuckled and told me that the higher you
The 104th Annual Session of the National Baptist Training
Pastor Reed presiding as National Vice President at
Thursday night’s session of the Congress Parent Body
Congress (National Baptist Congress of Christian Education) was held in the Motor City of Detroit, Michigan, the
week of June 21-26. The Congress is an Auxiliary of the
National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. I was blessed to
have been able to attend this session. From a personal
standpoint of view with respect to the Training Congress,
it was the most enjoyable one that I can remember in a
long time. There were no areas of major deficiencies that
I can point to.
The host city did a great job once again of hosting. I
kept hearing that the delegate count was supposed to be
between 40 and 45 thousand. That figure is down from
what it has been in past years, but of course so is the economy, and the attendance definitely reflected the economic
conditions that prevail across the nation at this time.
I was the last of the Fairview Delegation to leave
Oklahoma City, arriving on the scene, at mid-morning on
Monday. Normally I do not do this, but I think that it’s
deserving of mentioning that there were 15 adults and 6
youth making up the delegation. The Fairview Delegation
was led by our Venerable & Revered Pastor, Rev. Dr.
John A. Reed, Jr. and First Lady, Dr. Patricia Fisher Reed.
The theme of the Congress this year was “JESUS
CHRIST ONLY, ALWAYS” lifted out of I Corinthians
2:3 which reads: “For I determined not to know anything
among you, save Jesus Christ and Him crucified.” The
emphasis for the 2009 Congress was, “The Heavenly Vision and the Mission of the Church,” taken from Acts 9:6,
26:17-18.
2009—AUGUST
A portion of Fairview’s delegation was blessed to have a
photo opportunity with Pastor/Vice-President Reed following
Thursday night’s service. The group was present to witness
history in the making as Pastor Reed presided over the Evening Worship Assembly as Fifth Vice President of the National
Congress, a first for Pastor Reed in that capacity!

THE FAIRVIEWAN -100 YEARS
“100 YEARS OF IMPLEMENTING THE GREAT COMMISSION”
In observance of Fairview’s 100th Anniversary Celebration, each month of the year, the staff and contributing
writers will endeavor to inform the readers of the history of this great church. It will be done through two methods: by printing excerpts from the current written history and by interviewing long-time members to collect their
memories of people and events during their tenure at Fairview. These two presentations will be entitled, “The
Written History” and “An Eye Witness Account,” respectively. (Any additions made to these reports will be
indicated by parenthesis). At the end of the year, this information will be compiled into one document and will
be placed in the church archives.—M. Patterson, Editor
The Written History –
Part VIII
Pastor Reed & former Assistant-to-the
Pastor, Rev. J. L. Mitchell—1991
During the first year of operation in the new facility, the East
Zion District held it’s annual revival and the community was
blessed by the annual presentation
of “The Messiah” by the Baton and
Keyboard Club. …...
On December 2, 1990, the 81st
Homecoming and Church Anniversary was observed and a Son of
Fairview, Rev. Joe Carter, delivered
the morning message.
1991 was a memorable year for
the Fairview Family. Preparation
which had begun in the Fall of the
previous year began to pay off. The
2009—AUGUST
86th Annual Session of the National
Baptist Congress of Christian Education came to town and Fairview
was the host church. Fairview was
also the host site for the Fine Arts
Division, which served over 250
people.
Planning meetings and
status meetings were held with increasing frequency until finally on
the 15 of June, people began arriving in Oklahoma City from all over
the country.
The Fairview Family was
blessed by sermons from Dr. A.
Lincoln James, the President of the
National Baptist Congress and Dr.
Avery Aldrich, the Congress Director General. By the time the National Congress left on June 21,
nearly 30,000 Black Baptists from
all over the United States had visited Oklahoma City and many of
them had also visited Fairview.
The National Congress had a great
impact on Oklahoma City, both
spiritually and economically. (A
number of Fairview members
played key roles in the planning and
hosting of the Congress).
The early 1990s continued with
Pastor Reed presenting opportunities for the church family to grow
spiritually and in numbers. The
Christian Education Committee
sponsored several workshops dealing with issues such as “Marriage
and Family” and “Tithing.” Pastor
Reed revitalized the Counseling
Ministry. Pastor Reed addressed
the national Congress of Christian
Education in Pittsburg.
A plan for Phase II of the Expansion Program was developed.
4
The plan called for demolition of
the original 1927 building and renovation ad remodeling of the 1954
building. Pastor Reed established a
program to increase the number of
tithers and began taking pledges
from member willing to commit to
tithing.
The Fairview Family celebrated
Pastor and Sister Reed’s 29th Anniversary and the event was highlighted by a “This is Your Life Program.
1993 began on a somber note.
Maestro Leroy J. Hicks went home
to be with the Lord in January.
Leroy was an institution in the
Oklahoma City music community.
He had been the chief musician at
Fairview for many years and the
Director of Douglass High School
Vocal Music Department for 32
years. His funeral celebration was
the largest held in Fairview’s sanctuary and it was climaxed with an
emotional rendition of the
“Hallelujah Chorus” from Handel’s
Messiah sung by a mass choir comprised of current and former
members of the
Baton & Keyboard
Club,
current
and
former members of the
Douglass High

An Eye Witness Account
of
ELOISE CARBAJAL
MY FAMILY lived across the street
from the church so you can say I
was born into the Fairview Baptist
Church.
I was a very little girl when I
began coming across the street to
Sunday School. In 1941 Pastor
Fairly baptized me; I was about
seven years old. I was very active
in the Sunday school, Baptist
Training Union, Sunbeam Band
and all other activities that Fairview had going on.
My mother, Mrs. Mary Louise
Galbreath, died when I was seven
years old and my Grandmother,
Deaconess Malinda Guess
(deceased), raised me and my other
siblings, Ben Provo and Donald
Burns (deceased), whom the Fellowship Hall is named for.
My father is the late Deacon
B.L. Jones, who directed the Men’s
Choir and was President of the
Deacon Bozie Jones
2009—AUGUST
Brotherhood, which is now known
as the Men Ministry.
Some of the Deacons during
my formative years were Bro. I. W.
Williams, Bro. Anglin, Bro. Ayers,
Bro. Chapman, Bro. Mc Glory and
Bro. Warner. Bro. W. A. Rawls
was the Sunday School Superintendent.
The Deaconess at that time
were Sis. Eva Newby, Sis. Mrytle
Holloway, Mother Ella Green, Sis.
Adeline Rose and Mother
Ernestine Blaine.
Sister Jessie Jacobs was the
Secretary and Sis. Flora Mc Glory
was the Senior Choir Director.
Sis. Sadie Baker was president of
the Women Missionary Society.
Sis. Lucy Lucky was a Sunday
School Teacher.
While growing up in Fairview,
I directed and played the piano and
directed the Cherub Choir. I wrote
the church song “Fairview, Oh,
Fairview.” I also played for the
Sunday School and B.T.U. and the
Women and Men Chorus. Bro.
Clarence Reed organized the Gospel Chorus and I was the Pianist. I
was one of the Building Fund
Members and I served as Church
Hostess for several years and continue to be active in the Church.
I definitely appreciate the opportunity of working with Bro.
Clarence Wilder (deceased) on the
Political Action Ministry. We
would register voters as one of our
tasks.
Mrs. Selma Fairly, the First
Lady, had a great impact on my
life. She often gave me guidance
and encouragement and just took
up time with me. I would drive her
to the millinery stores to buy hatmaking materials and she was
known for her beautiful hats.
5
Sixth Grade at Dunbar Elementary
When I went to Langston University, she would bring me cakes and
other goodies.
I choose to remain at Fairview
because the First birth is where
Fairview is. The second birth is
God’s will and the third birth I am
still. This is home!

INTERVIEW BY THERESA KIRKLIN
EDITOR’S NOTE:
Pastor J. A. Reed, Jr. recounted remembering, after returning to Fairview in 1963, attending Baptist
Training Union and someone
(usually Deacon B. L. Jones) would
call out across the room:
FAIR! the unison reply would be:
FAIRGROUND!
FAIR! Reply: FAIRVIEW!
FAIR! Reply: FAIRLY!
I contacted one of the long-time
families of Fairview, the Darlings, to
see if they remembered the words to
Fairview’s church song. They began
singing, without hesitancy, the
words below:
Oh, Fairview; Oh, Fairview
How we love
and our Pastors, too

East Zion District Women’s Ministry
on an excellent skit called “Everything”. It was
about a young Christian woman who was dealing with being drawn to a life of drinking, who
also had a heart for money so she chose to be a
lady of the night. The message for us in this feature was when in a storm, refocus and look to
God to bring us out. Listen to Him, follow the
spirit. God is an on-time God! In the life of this
young woman, He stepped in right on time and
won her soul back. Will you accept your mission?
The Quarterly fellowship meeting of the East
Zion District Women’s Ministry was held at the
First Baptist Church of Green Pastures. The
Theme for the session was United Women of
God on a Mission. The devotion committee
opened the meeting with an uplifting song, and
Psalm 18: 1-3 was the devotional scripture. The
Call to Order was done by Sis. Joyce White, Presiding Officer, the Welcome was by Terry
Wooten, Local President; the Greetings were
extended by Rev. Raymond Wandick, 2nd Vice
Moderator and the minutes were read by Sis
Linda Edwards who was filling in for Sis Barbara
Brasswell. During the roll call, Greater New Zion
church took home the trophy with 12 women present.
To conclude, birthday salutes for months April to
July were acknowledged. Book marks were presented to all the women.
Three of the attending churches shared their
Women’s Day Program schedules. Perhaps we
can support their program; they are as follows:
FOLLWERS OF CHRIST, August 1, 2pm—5pm;
NORTHEAST BAPTIST, August 29-30. The
Saturday meeting will begin at 9AM and the
speaker will be Sis. Loretta Woody; and
GREATER NEW ZION on October 3-4. The October 4 meeting will begin at 3:30.
We were asked to be in prayer for Sis. Braswell
and our President, Sis Ollivett Brothers, and for
the family of Rev. Robinson of Greater New Zion
who passed.
The Annual Association Overview is scheduled
for August 3-7, 2009. Women’s Day will be
Thursday, August 6 with a continental breakfast
at 8:30 AM. The meeting will begin at 9:00 AM.
The banquet will be Friday at 6:00 PM with the
reception at 5:30. It will honor past moderators,
including Fairview’s own Dr. J.A. Reed, Jr., Rev.
Parker, Rev. Mays, Rev. Hammons, Rev. W.B.
Woodberry and Rev. Tucker. Choir rehearsal for
the association will be August 1, 2009 at 6 p.m.
at Greater New Zion for all interested in singing.
Ladies let’s be inspired, glorified and on the battlefield!

Bible Study was led by Sis Dollie Sherrill who
spoke on “Making Mission our Ministry”. Sis.
Sherrill told us God does not have to share with
us, but that we are to go and do. God already
knows our needs. In our daily walk with Him we
are to let the Spirit of Christ lead us. Each day
we can either be led by the world, or led by God!
Sometime our growth in the Word may cause us
to lose friends. Also, Sis Sherrill told us that we
are to give generously and that our giving is an
extension of love. Sometimes we fall short, but
we get up! That is Divine help.

USHER AND NURSE MINISTRIES WORKSHOP
Fairview Baptist Church
for Fairview Assistant to the Pastor
August 9, 2009—10:00 a.m.
The Church Family of the Fairview Baptist
Church will have an Appreciation Service for Assistant to the Pastor, Rev. Derrick E. Walter, Sr., and his
family on Sunday, August 9.
The recognition will be held during the 10:00

Hope Baptist Church, Chickasha, Oklahoma, and
father to Rev. Derrick, will bring the message for the
service.
Rev. Derrick served as Youth Pastor at Fairview
until December 2006 when he was recommended to
serve as the Assistant to the Senior Pastor. He has
served earnestly in the position since that time,
working closely with and under the leadership and
direction of Dr. Reed. He gives tirelessly of himself
to the work of Christ and the church. His devotion
to his Pastor, love for the members and desire to
please God in all things yields him to display the
true nature of a servant.
Rev. Walter’s family, his wife of 17 years, Johnneese Shree, and children Kaubriana and Derrick Jr.,
work faithfully with him at Fairview. Johnneese
serves in various capacities, including church Administrative Assistant, Interim Music Director,
Group Leader for the Married Study Group, Youth
Ministry worker and other areas. Kaubriana and

THE FAIRVIEWAN -100 YEARS
MEN’S MINISTRY CORNER
SEEMS AS IF IT WAS JUST YESTERDAY that I was submitting
news from the ministry for the July edition of the Fairviewan,
but reality tells me that I am behind the scheduled deadline for
getting this article finished and into the hands of the appropriate
persons.
I shall of necessity be brief in my reporting but even though
I will be brief and concise, I am excited about what has transpired since I made my report for the last issue of the church
paper.
After leaving office as Director of the Men’s Ministry of the
East Zion Consolidated District Association, I made a vow to
myself and to God that I would use the time that I had been using to lead that Ministry, to devoting more time to my duties as
the Director of Men of my Church and to make the Ministry a
shining example of what God would want it to become.
In addition to vowing to strengthen the participation of our
Senior Laymen in becoming active in the Ministry, my primary
concern was to get our Royal Ambassador/Jr Laymen Program
involved in the work of the Ministry so that young boys and
young men would have a better chance at becoming all that God
would have them to become.
I have been attending our local, district, state, and national
meetings and I am tired of being there time and time again, and
never seeing Fairview’s young men involved in the Laymen
Departments. I know that the ability is present in our young
men, but we have not done what we should have been doing and
that is to train them. That is the job of the Senior Laymen for
one day, God will move us off the scene and we will need other
men to take our place. They cannot do this unless they are properly trained to do so. With the help of God himself, I was determined to do all that I could do to change that situation.
I targeted some of the Senior Laymen that I thought would
be the most supportive of what I was trying to do and brought
them together to reveal my plans to them. I was highly encouraged by their reaction to those plans and their vows of support of
me as I tried to implement them.
The Holy Spirit led me to one of our Brethren who possessed a highly proven skill to mobilize young men directing
them into the paths of righteousness. That person was Terrence
Bell. I had a long detailed conversation with him expressing my
hopes and my desires of what I was trying to accomplish with
the young men of Fairview. I had earlier revealed my plans to
our beloved Pastor and of course, his support was unconditional
as it always is when you are trying to do something that is pleasing to God.
Bro. Bell accepted the challenge of organizing our young
men into a brigade of “Young Christian Soldiers,” who would
be on the battlefield for our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Bro.
Bell advised me that he would need someone to do the ground
work in implementing his plans of operation. Again I prayed
about it and the Holy Spirit led me to another of our Brethren
who I had observed for sometime. He was quiet and reserved,
but each Sunday I took note of his presence during our Morning
Worship Services. I approached Bro. Terry Peeler, seeking
someone who would faithfully serve as the Co-Director in this
effort. Bro. Peeler was enthusiastic in his reaction to what I was
2009—AUGUST
11
wanting him to do and accepted with a quiet dignity that further
impressed me.
I had called the men together once before with Bro. Bell,
and we discussed some things in general, but that meeting was
primarily to introduce Bro. Bell to the men that I had targeted in
the initial group. When the Holy Spirit led me to Bro. Peeler, it
was time to get the show on the road as the “ringmaster” would
say.
I called the group together once more. I gave them a thorough overall briefing and turned things over to Bros. Bell and
Peeler. I told them that they of course would be working under
the umbrella of the Senior Laymen Ministry and Pastor Reed,
and they had my full support. Their responsibility was to carry
out the program and keep me informed as they did so as to what
was transpiring.
Finally it was time to bring in the young men that we were
targeting. We invited every young boy, and young man between the ages of 3 and 24 years old to a Wednesday evening
cookout and then had an agenda whereby we could reveal our
plans to them. Brother Bell asked me to explain who a Jr. Layman was, how he was supposed to conduct himself, and what
were the duties that he was supposed to be responsible for. I
eagerly accepted that invitation. Bro. Bell had also invited the
Director of the Scholarship Program that exists for Young Laymen and he was back with us. Already several scholarship
grants had been awarded to young men of Fairview and he took
applications from several more at that session.
Bro. Bell then brought his considerable skills to bear with
the group. He got them involved by having them introduce
themselves, and asking them a few simple things concerning the
bible, such as naming the first five books of the Old Testament.
After more of this type of activity, he had the young men who
felt the leadership of the Holy Spirit to make a commitment to
become Junior Laymen. Eight of them accepted that invitation
and several others made statements that they were considering it,
but would delay their decision until another time.
Those eight are being recognized at this time, by occupying
a special place in the Sanctuary during the Morning Worship
service where they are highly visible to Pastor Reed as he
preaches God’s Word, for one of the things that I told them that
they were responsible for, was to support Pastor Reed as the
taught and preached the Word of God.
This is a core group and our prayer is that others will be
joining them. These young men will be continually recognized
for there is much activity planned for them to have them become
recognized at the Local, District, State, and National levels.
We thank God for what He has done until now, as well as
thank Him for what we know that He is going to do in the future. We’re asking for you to support the leaders and the sponsors of this group with your prayers as they plant the seed of the
word in the lives of these young men. We have planted, we will
water, but we know that God will give the increase. Thank God
for His mighty acts.
Senior Laymen, we are asking for your support and if you
have ideas about what you would like to see in the Laymen Ministry program, I am at your disposal. Bros. Bell and Peeler
would welcome your suggestions as well.
We would be remiss if we did not once more thank those of
you who faithfully support the Ministry through your financial
gifts as well as your participation in the activities. We ask that
you continue that support.
Scripture for the month: Righteousness exalteth a nation:
but sin is a reproach to any people. Proverbs 10:34

young lion, Deacon Arthur C. Smith, Jr. was able to join in with us.
Well, this 104th Session of the Training Congress has come and
gone and let me say again that it was a good one. The 105th session will
be held in Houston. One
thing that I can definitely
say about Houston, is that
they know how to host
large gatherings be it the
Training Congress or the
National Session.
If the Lord allows me
to see June of 2010, I shall
be there. As I tell everyone who is interested,
once you start attending
these sessions, you be- Dr. Reed with Dr. Clarence Morton (left) and Dr.
come incurably hooked Clifford Johnson (right), Pastor of Mt. Pleasant
and you cannot break the Baptist Church, both of Baltimore, MD, following
mold. I just totally and Thursday night’s service.

I learn new things that the
Holy Spirit is desirous of

again, I urge those of you

100th Church Anniversary Celebration
1700 N E 7th Street ~ Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73117 ~ (405) 232-1621
Church Email: [email protected] -- Website: www.fairviewokc.com
Reverend John A. Reed, Jr., D.D., LH.D., Senior Pastor
Dear Patron:
We greet you in the glorious name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!
We are celebrating a historic event at Fairview, one that few churches in the Oklahoma City area have experienced. Fairview is observing its 100th year of service!
This year will be spent remembering those early Christians who organized this fellowship of faith in the year
of 1909. Members, together with friends, who, through their love for this church, made many sacrifices to sustain this fellowship for a century. The memory and honor of those whose prayer that the Fairview Baptist
Church Family would some day realize her first century of Christian service has been answered!
For 100 years, Fairview has followed the commands of Christ as set forth in the Great Commission, “Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them
to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the
world.” (Matthew 28:19-20)
We are putting together a CENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY SOUVENIR JOURNAL to serve as a testament as well as
commemoration of the ministry of Fairview and its impact in the lives of its members, the community, state,
nation and uttermost parts of the world. The Journal will chronicle Fairview’s 100-year existence and include
photos, greetings, remembrances and memorials of all those that have, in some way, been a part of this journey. We consider you to be an important part of Fairview’s history and, therefore, want YOU to be included
in this Historical Journal! Because of the multiplicity of persons that have been a part of this great church, we
expect a record number of requests for inclusion so we recommend that you reserve your space early! A form
with details for listing is included. Select a full page and receive a complimentary copy of the Journal.
A number of other observances have been scheduled to commemorate this great event. On Sunday, June 28,
we celebrated FOUNDER’S DAY. On August 15, we will have a CENTENNIAL PARADE. On November 15, the
Fairview Music Ministry will sponsor a CENTENNIAL REUNION MUSICAL. We will hold our CENTENNIAL
BANQUET on November 20, and finally, we will close out the year with our CENTENNIAL CHURCH ANNIVERSARY AND HOMECOMING CELEBRATION on December 6, 2009.
For additional information or details on any of these events, call the church office at (405) 232-1621. Specific
questions regarding the Souvenir Journal may be directed to [email protected].
