Wellness for staff at Sunnybrook Fitness Classes Fitness classes have always been important to the staff at Sunnybrook. Classes are offered 5 days every week over the lunch hour in order to meet the increasing demand as these classes are always full. The cost is only $2.00 per session so that all staff can afford to attend. These classes have been in place for over 8 years and are still considered to be one of the most enjoyable sessions offered to our staff. Fitness classes available are; Kick Boxing, Step, Muscle Conditioning, Step & Abs. Yoga Classes Yoga classes is another popular class enjoyed by our Sunnybrook staff. There are several sessions offered to staff. Classes are held in the evening from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. which is the preferred time for staff. Yoga is scheduled in a 10 week block and because of the popularity we are in the process of increasing the number of sessions provided throughout the day. If you are interested in participating in Yoga, you will need to book early. Watch for the next session to be offered in eNews Pilates Lengthen, strengthen, tone and re-sculpt your muscles. Improve your golf, tennis and other important activities in your life. Pilates is now available twice a week from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. for all Sunnybrook staff. Enjoy this relaxing and low impact exercise program. Due to the popularity of this program, each session is limited. Watch for the advertisement in eNews and book early. Massage Therapy Is stress and muscle fatigue getting you down? Perhaps you need a massage. A professional massage therapist is available from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every Thursday to provide massage therapy for all of our Sunnybrook staff that would like to participate. Appointments are required and can be made by calling (416) 837-6955. Ask to speak to Anna Marie. Safety & You Stay Healthy/Prevent Injuries Stay safe and healthy - special sessions are offered on a regular bases throughout the lunch hour. Watch eNews and schedule yourself in for one of these special programs offered. • Work Station Set Up • How To Make Using A Portable/Ceiling Lift Easier and Safer • Back Care – Risk Factors and Prevention Strategies • Learning How To Use Patient Re-Positioning Assistive Devices • Safe Patient Handling Seminar • Porter Training – Body Mechanics • Assistive Devices Nordic Pole Walking New Summer Program Nordic Pole Walking is a new program that we are happy to offer weekly throughout the summer months. This is a safe, low impact exercise program for everyone that tones, strengthens and tightens all body muscles. Studies have shown that Nordic Pole Walking has a positive effect on participants that have diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure and other various types of medical conditions. Watch for eNews as sessions will be starting during the lunch hour in early June and there will be several sessions offered at various times of the day. Sunny Gym Sunnybrook has transformed a large room into a Fitness Centre and it is free of charge to all staff and open 24 hrs a day, 7 days per week. Our Human Resources Department take full responsibility for this Fitness Centre in order to maintain both the equipment & room, assure updated equipment and provide a safe and clean environment in which our staff can enjoy on a regular basis. Equipment includes the following: • Tread Mills • Exercise Bikes • Heavy Bag • Stability Ball • Universal Weight Machine • Mats • Assorted weights • Elliptical • Steps & much more Come and see for yourself! Reflective Thought For The Week Special thought for the week was developed by the Sunnybrook Spiritual Care Team. For all staff interested, they can come to each Monday & open up a meaningful thought for the week on their email. Other services offered are daily mass in the Christian chapel, daily prayers in the Muslim prayer room and special events in the Jewish chapel. Every three months, there are Memorial Services to remember and honour those patients, staff and volunteers who have died in our midst. This is a great way to start your work week. Spiritual Care Day of Mourning Each year our Spiritual Care Department provides a wonderful ceremony for all staff to recognize those that have been injured or lost their lives in the workplace. This ceremony includes all Sunnybrook staff and each year the participation and attendance just keeps growing. Sunnybrook Speaker Series This is a speaker series featuring our own Sunnybrook Physicians. Various topics of interest are discussed and these sessions are offered on a regular basis. Healthy Aging For Your Body & Mind Presented by one of our own Family Physicians, Neurologist, and Rheumatology Physicians. Topics include: Key elements for a Healthy Lifestyle Exercise Matters: How to promote Brain Health as we age. Prevention & Treatment options for Osteoporosis & Osteoarthritis. Solutions For A Sound Sleep Presented by our Neurosciences/Medicine Programs Topics include: Normal Sleep, Abnormal Sleep, Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Heart Disease, Treatment for Sleep Apnea and Restless Leg Syndrome. Sunnybrook Chorus Sunnybrook has formed a new chorus and is inviting all interested staff, physicians and volunteers to join. • No prior singing experience required • A wide variety of music from many • Genres – pop, jazz, folk and classical First rehearsal on Tuesday March 25 08.
