Welcome
Liebe Segelsportfreunde
Ich heisse Sie, Seglerinnen und Segler aus ganz Europa und den USA, an den Europameisterschaften auf dem
Vierwaldstättersee herzlich willkommen. Ihnen und den Organisatoren vom Regattaverein Brunnen wünsche ich
eine erfolgreiche Regattawoche.
Trotz den Erfolgen von Alinghi kann man die Schweiz nicht unbedingt als Segelnation bezeichnen. Schweizer
Segler haben im Rahmen der Olympischen Spiele bisher einen ganzen Medaillensatz errungen. Die einzige Goldmedaille für die Schweiz gewann Comte Henri de Pourtalès mit seiner Crew an den Spielen der II. Olympiade in
Paris im Jahr 1900. Zu dieser Zeit war die 6-m-Bootsklasse noch nicht olympisch – sie war es von 1912 bis 1952,
nachdem 1908 die Regeln für den Bau dieser wunderschönen und eleganten Boote mit schlankem Rumpf, die sich
durch ihre Stabilität und ihre Schnelligkeit auszeichnen, festgelegt wurden.
Segeln stösst bei der Schweizer Jugend auf grosses Interesse. Jährlich nehmen über 2000 Mädchen und Knaben
im Rahmen von Jugend und Sport an von der Eidgenossenschaft subventionierten Segelkursen teil. Mit Sicherheit
werden einige von ihnen den Weg zum Spitzensport finden und im Kielwasser von Alinghi oder Flavio Marazzi
und Enrico De Maria, den aktuell besten Schweizer Starbootseglern, Fahrt aufnehmen.
Unweit der Wiege der Eidgenossenschaft, dem Rütli, erwartet die Wettkämpferinnen und Wettkämpfer auf dem
Urnersee oder im Gersauer Becken mit 8 Regatten innerhalb von vier Tagen ein anspruchsvolles Programm. Der
hohe Wellengang auf dem Urnersee hat – der Sage nach – Wilhelm Tell geholfen, mit einem Sprung aus dem
Nauen auf die Tellsplatte zu fliehen. Den Organisatoren und Regattierenden wünsche ich ein ruhigeres Gewässer
und einen reibungslosen Ablauf der 6mJI-Europameisterschaft mit spannenden Wettfahrten bei guten Windbedingungen.

Welcome to Switzerland
Dear friends of yacht racing
I would like to warmly welcome all you sailors from throughout Europe and the USA to the European Championships
on Lake Lucerne. I hope you and the organisers of the Regattaverein Brunnen enjoy a successful week’s regatta
racing.
Despite the successes of Alinghi Switzerland is not a country which people particularly associate with sailing. Up
to now Swiss sailors have won just one complete set of medals at the Olympic Games. The only gold medal for
Switzerland was won by Count Henri de Pourtalès with his crew at the Games of the II Olympiad in Paris in 1900. The
6m yacht class was not a recognised Olympic category at that time – but it was from 1912 to 1952 after the rules for
the construction of these beautiful, elegant yachts with a sleek hull were defined in 1908, the characteristic features of
which being their stability and speed.
Sailing is attracting a great deal of interest amongst young people in Switzerland. Every year more than 2000
youngsters, girls and boys, take part in sailing courses subsidised by the Swiss Confederation as part of the Youth and
Sport programme. Some of them will no doubt find their way to the top of the sport and ‘pick up the pace’ in the wake
of Alinghi or Flavio Marazzi and Enrico De Maria, the best known of the Swiss sailors on the star yacht.
Not far from the cradle of the Swiss Confederation, the Rütli, the competitors on Lake Uri or the Gersauer Basin will
have a demanding programme ahead of them, with 8 races within four days. According to the legend the storm on
Lake Lucerne helped William Tell to flee from the bailiff’s boat on to a flat rock (Tellsplatte). I hope the weather is a little
less turbulent for the organisers and participants and that the 6mJI European Championships proceed smoothly with
exciting races in good wind conditions.

Chers amateurs de voile,
Je souhaite la bienvenue aux équipages venus de tous les pays d’Europe et des Etats-Unis pour participer au
championnat d’Europe se disputant sur le Lac des Quatre-Cantons. Je vous souhaite ainsi qu’aux organisateurs du
Club de régates de Brunnen de passer une excellente semaine dédiée à la voile.
Même compte tenu du succès d’Alinghi, il est difficile de faire passer la Suisse pour une nation «mordue» de voile.
A ce jour, les athlètes suisses n’ont décroché que quelques médailles olympiques, la seule récompense en or
revenant au comte Henri de Pourtalès et à son équipage lors des seconds jeux olympiques modernes qui se sont
déroulés en 1900 à Paris. A cette époque, les 6 mètres n’étaient pas encore discipline olympique: cette catégorie l’est
devenue entre 1912 et 1952, les modalités de construction de ces bateaux racés et élégants à la coque élancée, se
démarquant par leur stabilité et leur rapidité, ayant été définies en 1908.
La jeunesse helvétique s’intéresse fortement à la voile, plus de 2000 filles et garçons participant chaque année, dans
le cadre de Jeunesse et Sport, aux stages de voile subventionnés par la Confédération. Parmi eux, certains ont de
bonnes chances de devenir des athlètes d’exception dans le sillage d’Alinghi ou de Flavio Marazzi et Enrico De Maria,
qui sont à l’heure actuelle les deux meilleurs spécialistes suisses de voile.
Non loin du Rütli, qui est le berceau historique de la Confédération, les concurrents n’auront guère le temps de se
reposer pendant les quatre jours de compétition, soit huit régates se disputant sur le lac d’Uri ou dans le bassin de
Gersau.
La légende prétend d’ailleurs que la forte houle du lac d’Uri aurait permis à notre héros national Guillaume Tell de
s’échapper de son bateau en sautant sur la terre ferme. Je souhaite aux organisateurs et aux concurrents de naviguer
dans des eaux plus clémentes et de vivre du premier au dernier jour un passionnant championnat d’Europe des 6mJI
avec de bonnes conditions de vent.

Welcome to Brunnen On behalf of our Executive Council I would like to warmly welcome you to our beautiful municipality on the
shores of Lake Lucerne.
Ingenbohl-Brunnen is characterized on the one side by its special location in the valley basin of Schwyz, surrounded by majestic mountains and on the other by Lake Uri the Southernmost part of Lake Lucerne. Lake Uri is a
Mecca for sports enthusiasts, naturally including sailors in particular. Sheer cliffs rise steeply out of the waters of
Lake Uri, shaping the unspoilt natural beauty of this section of the Lake.
The surrounding area is steeped in history and has numerous sites of historic interest such as the Rütli, considered
the birthplace of our Swiss Confederation. Brunnen itself has an equally eventful history, its name dates back to
1217. The first recorded event in Brunnen is the celebration of the rebirth of the Confederation following the Battle
of Morgarten at the end of 1315. The subsequent history of our municipality of Ingenbohl, including the districts
of Ingenbohl, Brunnen, Wylen and Unterschönenbuch is shaped by growth and change. The evolution from a port
and agricultural region to a spa resort and finally to what it is today, an attractive municipality with a population of
approx. 8,500, covering an area of 1,760 hectares and offering diversity as a place to live, to do business and for recreation purposes. Through the Ingenbohl Monastery, Ingenbohl-Brunnen is also the base for the Institute of Holy
Sisters of Mercy. The effects of its work in the areas of spiritual and social welfare are felt throughout the world.
“Läbe und läbe laa” (Live and let live) is the motto of our village community. An understanding of harmony and
community is another special quality of the inhabitants of our municipality.
The region has a long and great history of tradition in shipping and consequently of course in sailing. A document
from 1357 mentions the existence of an Association of Brunner Seafarers. From the fourteenth to the nineteenth
century the inhabitants of the region made their living from the transport of goods and passengers and the Lake as
a link between Southern and Northern Europe. The special importance of this is signified by the symbolic sailing
boat in our municipality’s coat of arms.
We look forward to your visit and wish you “a fair wind in your sails”, hope that the weather is beautiful, the wind
conditions good and that you enjoy a convivial time with old friends and new. We want your stay in Brunnen to be
an unforgettable experience.

Europameisterschaft der 6mJl Klasse
Herzlich willkommen bei uns in Brunnen.
Im Namen unseres Gemeinderates heisse ich Sie herzlich in unserer wunderbaren Gemeinde am Vierwaldstättersee willkommen.
Ingenbohl-Brunnen ist einerseits geprägt von der besonderen Lage im Talkessel von Schwyz, umgeben von majestätischen Bergen und andererseits vom Urnersee, dem südlichsten Teil des Vierwaldstättersees. Der Urnersee ist
ein Eldorado für Sportler, vorab natürlich auch für Segler. Schroffe zerklüftete Felsen ragen steil aus dem Wasser
des Urnersees und bestimmen so die wilde Schönheit dieses Abschnitts des Sees.
Die ganze Umgebung ist äusserst geschichtsträchtig und von historischen Stätten wie dem Rütli, das als Geburtsstätte unserer Eidgenossenschaft gilt, umgeben. Brunnen hat einen ebenso historischen Hintergrund aufzuweisen,
begegnet man dem Namen doch erstmals 1217. Das erste, dokumentarisch nachgewiesene Ereignis in Brunnen ist
die feierliche Erneuerung des Bundes nach der Schlacht am Morgarten Ende 1315. Die spätere Geschichte unserer
Gemeinde Ingenbohl mit den Ortsteilen Ingenbohl, Brunnen, Wylen und Unterschönenbuch ist gekennzeichnet
vom Wachsen und Wandel. Eine Entwicklung vom Schifferdorf und Landwirtschaftsraum hin zum Kurort und
weiter zur heutigen attraktiven Gemeinde mit rund 8500 Einwohnern. Eine Gemeinde, die auf 1760 ha ein vielfältiges Angebot in den Bereichen Wohnen, Wirtschaften und Erholung anbieten kann. Ingenbohl-Brunnen ist zudem
mit dem Kloster Ingenbohl die Basis für das Institut der Barmherzigen Schwestern vom Heiligen Kreuz. Ihr geistiges und soziales Wirken strahlt aus auf die ganze Welt.
«Läbe und läbe laa» ist das Motto unserer Dorfgemeinschaft. Das Verständnis für das Zusammenleben und die
Gemeinschaft zeichnen denn auch unsere Bevölkerung besonders aus.
Die Schifffahrt und damit natürlich auch das Segeln hat in Brunnen eine grosse und lange Tradition, weist doch
ein Dokument aus dem Jahre 1357 auf die Existenz einer Brunner Schiffsleutevereinigung hin. Vom vierzehnten
bis hin ins neunzehnte Jahrhundert lebten die Einwohner vom Waren- und Personentransport und dem See als Verbindungsweg zwischen dem Süden und Norden Europas. Das stilisierte Segelboot in unserem Gemeindewappen
weist auf diese besondere Bedeutung hin.
Wir freuen uns auf Ihren Besuch und wünschen Ihnen «Mast- und Schotbruch», schönes Wetter, guten Wind und
tolle Begegnungen. Ihr Aufenthalt in Brunnen soll Ihnen in unvergesslicher Erinnerung bleiben.

Sailing is a team sport, especially racing on a high level, as it is requested in a Championship. But this is not the
only requirement for a successful Championship. Teamwork is also requested between the sailors and the organisation team with all their assistants. The members of Regattaverein Brunnen will do their best. They are glad looking
forward to a good team work with all participants in order to achieve the common target: To sail a sportsman like
and unforgettable 6mJI European Championship 2010.

Dear 6mJI sailors
It’s more than 100 years ago that the metre class rule has been created by an international team. Today still more
than 800 yachts are listed. From the late 1930ies to the early 2000 we have boats buildt. A good hundreds are still
racing today, divided in a Classic and a Modern fleet. When the Association Suisse des 6mJI proposed to organize
the Europeans 2010 in Switzerland at the ISMA Annual General Meeting 2006 in Cowes, the national representants accepted the invitation. We are happy to make 6mJI again racing on a lake and we learned that the Lake Lucerne,
and specially the Lake Uri is one of the best sailing waters in Switzerland.
We want to thank the Regattaverein Brunnen and the Association Suisse des 6mJI for all the work which was done
and will be done during the Europeans 2010.
With some thirty teams from six countries we will have spectacular racing. I hope very much, that the event will
be of high level on the water and very friendly ashore. We thank the whole organisation team, the sponsors and all
partners for arranging this important event. Without the help of a lot of sailingfans an event like this would not be

Après des années d’abstinence d’organisation de régates internationales de 6mJI en Suisse nous avons décidé de
proposer le Lac Uri pour vous recevoir tous ici sous l’organisation du Regattverein Brunnen, un club qui a organisé avec succès d’autres championnats mondiaux ou européens. Après avoir été invités a naviguer en France, en
Allemagne, en Suède, en Italie et en Angleterre il nous semblait opportun de vous présenter la région centrale de
Suisse, Brunnen et le Lac Uri, qui est un lac venté par beau temps. Nous espérons pouvoir vous offrir un événement
inoubliable. A tous les équipages nous souhaitons de belles journées de régates couronnées de succès.

Dear 6mJl Sailors, Dear Sports Lovers
Sport Canton Schwyz is honoured to be taking on the role of patron for this year’s important 6mJI European
Championships in Brunnen. By doing this we want to help raise the profile of yacht racing amongst the wider
general public.
The main activity of our sports development agency includes the areas of YOUTH+SPORT (40 different sports;
180 clubs; 13’000 young people; 3’100 instructors) plus the general SPORT DEVELOPMENT incl. Talent
through contributions to the Swiss National Lottery Sports Fund and by providing advice (450 clubs;120 young
people with Swiss Olympic Talentcards). At the venues we also provide vigorous support e.g. for the professional development of a trainee department in yacht racing.
We would like to wish everyone an exciting and accident-free competition and hope they take lasting impressions and contacts away with them when they leave!

Für die Abteilung Sport Kanton Schwyz ist es eine Ehre, das Patronat der diesjährigen, bedeutenden 6mJlYachten Europameisterschaft in Brunnen übernehmen zu dürfen. Wir möchten damit einen Beitrag zur stärkeren
Wahrnehmung des Segelsports in der breiten Öffentlichkeit leisten.
Zur Haupttätigkeit unserer Sportförderungsstelle gehören die Bereiche JUGEND+SPORT (40 Sportarten; 180
Vereine; 13’000 Jugendliche; 3’100 Leiterpersonen) sowie die allgemeine SPORTFÖRDERUNG inkl. Talente
durch Swisslos-Sportfondsbeiträge und Beratung (450 Vereine; 120 Jugendliche mit Swiss Olympic Talentcards).
Wir unterstützen im Austragungsort beispielsweise auch tatkräftig den fachkundigen Aufbau einer Nachwuchsabteilung im Segelsport.

Regattaverein Brunnen – RVB – der Gastgeber
Seit mehr als 40 Jahren ein wichtiges Aushängeschild des Ferienortes Brunnen.…
Der Regattaverein Brunnen organisierte seit seinem Bestehen über 100 Regatten und holte damit mehrere tausend
Segler nach Brunnen. Damit leistet er einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Belebung des Tourismus in Brunnen und macht
das Feriendorf am See weit über die Seglerwelt hinaus bekannt. Nicht umsonst zieren Segel das Werbesignet von
Brunnen.
Der RVB wurde 1963 durch eine Handvoll begeisterter Segler gegründet. Viel Enthusiasmus, eine schöne Region,
ein noch schöneres Segelrevier mit ausgezeichneten Windverhältnissen waren und sind auch heute noch die Stärken des inzwischen über 100 Mitglieder zählenden Vereins.
Das Ziel des RVB ist es, den Regatta-Segelsport auf dem Urnersee, speziell für die Einheitsklassen, zu fördern. In Seglerkreisen sind die jeweils im August vor Brunnen durchgeführten Regattawochenenden, die Herbstpreise, zur Tradition geworden. In regelmässigen Abständen von 2 bis 3 Jahren organisiert der RVB nationale oder internationale Meisterschaften. Vier Weltmeisterschaften, vier
Europameisterschaften und 29 Schweizermeisterschaften zeugen von der Leistungsfähigkeit des Vereins.…
Seit 2006 ist die Marina Fallenbach Ausgangsbasis unserer Regatten. Der neue Hafen erlaubt es dem RVB, die
Clubaktivitäten weiter auszudehnen und vermehrt lokale Anlässe wie Trainingsregatten für einheimische Segler,
Juniorentrainings und Seglertreffs zu veranstalten. Der Regattaverein Brunnen ist damit der ideale Treffpunkt aller
Segler aus der Region.

Höhepunkt der Regattasaison 2010 ist die in Zusammenarbeit mit der Association Suisse des 6mJI. ausgetragene
Europameisterschaft der 6mJI Klasse. Wir freuen uns ganz besonders auf diesen Anlass und sind davon überzeugt,
dass die gemeinsame Begeisterung für den Regattasport und die Kameradschaft unter Seglern, zusammen mit
der grossartigen Landschaft und den normalerweise vorherrschenden thermischen Winden, die besten Voraussetzungen für das gute Gelingen dieser Klassen- und Europameisterschaft bilden.

Regattaverein Brunnen – RVB – the Host-Club
For more than 40 years been one of the major features of Brunnen holiday resort.
Since it was founded, RVB has organized more than 100 regattas and attracted over a thousand yachtsmen to the
town, thus helping to make this lakeside resort famous. Sails are also the promotional sign of Brunnen.
RVB was founded in 1963 by a handful of keen yachtsmen. A lot of enthusiasm has gone into building up the club
which now has over a 100 members, and the setting is quite perfect -- a beautiful region and a pleasant sailing
resort with excellent wind conditions.
RVB’s aim is to organize and encourage regattas on the Lake of Uri, especially with one design class boats. The
yearly Autumn Cup regatta weekends, are now a well known event and has already become an established tradition. At 2- to 3-year intervals, RVB regularly organizes national and international championships. So far, it has
held four World Championships, four European Championships and 29 Swiss Championships, proof of the club’s
enthusiasm and organizational ability.
The highlight of the 2010 regatta season is the 6mJI European Championships. It is with great pleasure that together with Swiss 6mJI Association, we are now organizing the 2010 Int. Class Championships and the Europeans
at Brunnen.
We are certain that the mutual enthusiasm for yacht racing and the sense of comradeship that all yachtsmen share
form a sound basis, combined with the magnificent landscape in our region and the usually prevailing thermal
winds will be for the success of this European Championship.

Saturday 24th and Monday 26th July a modified transport-ship called „Nauen“ is ready to ship spectators into the
racing area of the European Championship. There you are able to experience the competition between the fleet of
30 yachts. The race will be commented by an expert. Let you be fascinated by the competition. Why go the the sea,
when you can get here in Brunnen a similar experience!

but also the harbour-lodgers, who gave the guest-right to all participants during this week.
The Pricegiving Cermony will be held Tuesday, July 27th, 2010
7:00 pm in the Fallenbach Marina Workshop, that ist transformed in the 6mJI center.
The European Champions 2010 in Classic and Modern will get their trophies and the Championship officially
closed. The after-pricegiving party will give you time to discuss the adventures you lived in Brunnen but also to
appoint for the Worlds 2011 which will be held in Helsinki, Finland.

The Marina Fallenbach is one by the Association „Fallenbach Bootshafen“ engineered and realized Marina
funded by private partnership. After a long planning period the Marina was build during 2005 and 2006. In
July 2006 there was a festive inauguration. The Marina is managed on a unprofitable base. The Marina offers
192 water moorings, 30 standard guest moorings, a Restaurant, a crane and travelift for bigger boats and an
independent yard with service and gasoline station.

Transport arrival in Brunnen from July 19th on:
Do not drive to the Marina Fallenbach,
your transport will not be accepted and re-routed to the lorry-trailer parking.
Please follow the roads from the highway exit „Brunnen“ to the lorry-trailer parking. When you
arrive call + 41 41 825 65 55.
You will be received by the service management crew, you prepare your yacht and will get an
number which will be called as soon there is space in the marina. The 6mJI will be watered
and rigged and your transport has to go back to the parking.
There will be a shuttle service between the marina, the parking and the hotels.

Hinweise für Teilnehmer am European Championship 2010
Camper and Tents:
There are several Camping areas in the neighberhood of Brunnen. We propose the participants to make early reservation.
It is not allowed to camp out of these official areas.
In der Umgebung von Brunnen gibt es mehrere offizielle Camping Plätze. Wir empfehlen Teilnehmern sich Stellplätze rechtzeitig zu reservieren.
Es ist nicht erlaubt, Camper oder Zelte ausserhalb der dafür vorgesehenen Zonen aufzustellen.
Tender / Ribs:
Additional boats are welcome. As Switzerland does very much effort to have clean Lakes, it will be difficult to
use old 2 stroke outbord engines. We propose you to have equiped your tender / ribs with clean 4 stroke engines.
2 stroke engines could be forbidden to use by the local authorities.
Die Schweiz ist sehr darauf bedacht, das Wasser in den Seen sauber zu halten. Aus diesem Grund empfehlen wir
Ihnen Ihre Begleitboote mit sauberen 4Takt Motoren ausgerüstet an den Vierwaldstättersee zu bringen. Der Betrieb von 2 Takt Motoren könnte durch die Behörde verboten werden.
Längen der Regatta Kurse / Lenght of the up-wind – downwind legs.
Auf Grund der Grösse unserer Gewässer und der lokalen Kenntnis der Wetterbedingungen durch den Race Officer
müssen die Teilnehmer zur Kenntnis nehmen, dass die Kurslängen (up wind-down) zwischen 1.5 – 2.0 nm lang
sein können. Es werden aber bei guten Bedingungen in der Regel 2 Regatten am Tag gesegelt. Die Segel Anweisungen geben den Teilnehmern ausführliche Informationen.

Safety matters / Sicherheit:
The Urnersee offers beautifl thermic winds with sunshine. Sometimes we get „Föhn-Wind“. This wind falls down
from the mountains in the South of the lake. If you do not know the weather situation it’s difficult to foresee the
Föhn. This winds fall in within 10 minutes. Therefore it may be hat the race officer stops a race. In this case all
the boats must go back immediately to the Marina on
the shortest possible way. Winds up to 8-9 beaufort are
possible. Do follow strictly the safety advisers on the
Lake.

laufende Regatta unterbricht. Dann gibt es nur einen
direkten Weg in die Marina zurück. Den Anweisungen
der Sicherheitscrew ist strikte Folge zu leisten.

6mJI – une des plus belles classes de yachts du monde
Dans le monde entier, les yachts de la classe 6mJI comptent parmi les plus beaux fleurons des parcours de régates.
Même si les plus anciens bateaux peuvent avoir 80 ans ou plus, ils brillent encore aujourd’hui par l’élégance de
leur coque fuselée ainsi que par leur robustesse et leur vitesse. Ils continuent à séduire les membres des familles
royales européennes tout comme les éminents représentants du gotha de la voile: de nombreux as de la Coupe de
l’America sont ainsi amateurs de six mètres. De 1908 à 1952, les 6 mR avaient le statut de série olympique.
Les six mètres doivent leur attractivité à la fameuse «Jauge internationale». Instaurée au début du siècle dernier
dans le but de définir une formule de jaugeage pour les voiliers de course qui soit valable universellement pour tous
les pays, elle devait en même temps fixer des règles de régate et de priorité pour les courses.
Une règle qui a changé le monde de la voile
En 1906, les fonctionnaires dirigeants des plus influentes associations européennes de voile se sont réunis autour d’une table pour y fonder l’«International Yacht Racing Union» (IYRU), une «association internationale de
régates». Les participants ont fini par adopter la «formule métrique» du pharmacien et constructeur amateur de
Copenhague, Alfred Benzon: dès 1908, elle était appliquée dans la plupart des pays organisant des compétitions
de voile. Les voiliers métriques devaient convenir tant pour des courses équitables que pour les escapades plus
longues. A l’issue de leur carrière dans les régates, ils devaient être facilement transformables en yacht de croisière
«sains».
La nouvelle règle était un compromis entre la formule permettant de déterminer la longueur du voilier jusqu’alors
et les règles de jaugeage en vigueur à l’époque en Angleterre. Si les bateaux des plus petites classes destinés à la
navigation intérieure bénéficiaient jusqu’alors d’une conception bien plus légère que ceux prévus pour la navigation côtière, la formule métrique exigeait même pour les plus petites classes un surdimensionnement, à l’instar
des navires maritimes. L’épaisseur de certains éléments pouvait dépasser de 30% celle utilisée habituellement. On
espérait alors que la nouvelle formule permettrait de promouvoir la construction de bateaux robustes d’un tirant
d’eau moyen. Mais au fur et à mesure que les constructeurs apprenaient à exploiter la formule, le poids donné aux
paramètres «B» et «d» faisait pencher la balance vers des navires très élancés, dotés d’un fond en V extrêmement
prononcé. La prise en compte insuffisante de la surface de voilure s’est avérée être une autre erreur significative
avec, pour résultat, des navires au gréement bien trop lourd. Même lorsque l’intensité du vent était faible, les voiliers se penchaient sur le côté avec un angle de 30 à 40 degrés, immergeant ainsi les plats-bords dans l’eau. Ainsi,
les voiliers métriques issus de la première version de la formule n’étaient vraiment rapides que par faible intensité
de vent. Pour cette raison entre autres, la formule initiale a subi différentes petites modifications au cours du temps.
Aujourd’hui, les classes de 6, 8 et 12 mR figurent parmi les «classes métriques internationales» les plus connues.

The first International Rule
L: means the length measured at a specific height above the flotation line applicable for all classes. B: the greatest
width across the planks. G: the greatest chain-measurement (girth), i.e. the length from the upper edge of the gunwale to one side of the boat, measured with a tape measure, underneath the keel to the upper edge of the gunwale
on the other side. d: the difference between the measure along outer skin, following the bulkhead and the straight
chain-measurement as described above G. The difference in the „d“ measurement was penalized three times, because the aim was to prevent the unpopular fin keel and heavy boats. F: the freeboard as an arithmetical average
from twice the freeboard, measured at the widest point, plus the two freeboards on the bow and stern end of the
water line. S: the sail area as the sum of the main sail, top sail and foresail.
6mJI – One of the world’s most beautiful classes of yacht
The yachts of the 6mJI Class are one of the ‘flagships’ on the world’s regatta courses. Although some of the oldest
boats have been around for 80 years and more, they still gleam today thanks to the elegance of their sleek hull,
their stability and speed. Members of Europe’s royal houses have been and continue to be just as enthusiastic about
them as the leading representatives from the ‘Who’s Who’ of yacht racing. For example, numerous crack sailors
who take part in the America’s Cup are enthusiastic 6mR series sailors. From 1908 to 1952 the 6 metre R yachts
held Olympic Class status.
The attraction of the 6mR series yachts is thanks to the so-called “International Rule”. This was created at the
beginning of the last century with the aim of establishing a measurement rule for racing yachts which was to be
universally applicable to all nations. At the same time these were intended to define standardised rules for regattas
and right of way for competition racing.
A rule that changed the world of sailing
In 1906 the leading functionaries of Europe’s most influential yacht racing associations sat around the ‘stewards’
desk’ in London for the inauguration of an “international racing association, the “International Yacht Racing Union” (IYRU)”. The participants agreed on the “metre formula” developed by the Copenhagen chemist and amateur
designer Alfred Benzon which was to be applicable in most European yacht racing countries from 1908. The metre
yachts were intended to be suitable both for fair racing as well as for longer voyages. At the end of their regatta
careers the intention was for them to be easily converted into “healthy” cruiser yachts.
The new rule represented a compromise between the previous formula for sail length and the measurement rules
applicable at that time in England. Whilst up to this point in time the smaller classes for inland waters had been
designed to be significantly lighter than those for coastal waters, the metre formula requires greater than normal
dimensions like those of an ocean-going vessel even for the smallest classes. In some cases the thickness of individual components was up to 30% more than had previously been the norm. The hope now was that the new
formula would promote medium-depth yachts built with stability. However, the more that the designers learnt how
to exploit the formula the more that extremely sleek boats with an extreme V-shape profile were ultimately created
through the severe punishment of “B” and “d”. The lack of taxation of the sail area which led to boats with too
much sail area proved to be another serious error. Even at low wind speeds the yachts leaned over 30-40 degrees
pulling the gunwales through the water. The metre yachts were therefore the first version of the formula to only be
really quick at low wind speeds. For this and other reasons the original formula was repeatedly slightly modified
over the course of time. Today the most popular “international metre classes” are the 6, 8 and 12 m R Classes.

2010 International 6 Metre European Championship
NOTICE OF RACE
The Organising Authority, the Regatta Verein Brunnen (www.rv-brunnen.ch), in association with the International
Six Metre Association (ISMA) (www.6metre.ch), the Association Suisse des 6mJI and Swiss Sailing, is pleased to
invite you to participate in the 2010 Six Metre European Championship (www.6mr-europeans.org).
UPAG and several others are the official sponsors of the RVB and the European Championship.
1. Rules
The regatta will be governed by:
- the ISAF Racing Rules of Sailing 2009/2012 (RRS),
- the ISMA Class Rule and the ISMA Rules for the European Championship (www.6metre.ch/rules)
- the Swiss Sailing National Prescriptions to the racing rules
- the Notice of Race, except to the extent that it be amended by the Sailing Instructions,
- the Sailing Instructions and their amendments. (If there are discrepancies between the Notice of Race and the
Sailing Instructions, the interpretation and decision of the International Jury shall prevail.)
- the Swiss law on inland water navigation
2. Advertising
The regatta is designated a Category C event under ISAF Regulation 20. Advertising is thus permitted:
- on spinnakers
- on the transom
- when moored, on flags on the forestay
- on one flag hoisted on the backstay not higher than two meters above the waterline. The dimensions of the flag
shall not exceed 30 cm x 60 cm
Competitors are asked by the RVB to display flags of supporting company before and after racing.
3. Eligibility and Entries
The Championship shall be open to International 6 Metre Yachts holding a valid certificate of rating.
All entrants shall have paid their 2010 membership dues to their ISMA affiliate national association or, for those
entrants whose home port is outside the countries of the ISMA affiliate national associations, directly to ISMA. Yachts may enter by completing the Official Entry Form and paying the Entry Fee of 550.00 Euro.
- The completed Entry Form and Entry fee shall be received by the RVB no later than June, 12th, 2010.
- The entry fee is non-refundable.
- Each entrant shall provide at the time of Registration:
a. for each Swiss crew member, a valid Swiss Sailing racing license,
b. the valid Measurement Certificate and Measurement Form of the Yacht,
c. a valid third party insurance or equivalent, with a minimum cover of 1.5 million Euros
d. parental authorization for minors,
e. a crew list of a maximum of 6 persons. Substitution of crew members within this list shall only be allowed in
special cases, and subject to the approval of the International Jury.

4.2 Social events

5. Class
The Championship shall be sailed in 2 classes:
- Moderns - Classics
with 2 different scores. There will be 2 starts if the total number of entrants exceeds 15.
6. Courses & Time Limit
The courses to be sailed will be windward / leeward type:
Racing will be on Lake Lucerne, in Lake Uri or he Bay of Gersau, depending from the wind conditions
The legs will be 1.5 – 2.0 nm where possible
There shall be a time limit of 50 minutes for Modern Yachts and 55 minutes for Classic Yachts to complete each
leg. All yachts finishing the race within the prescribed time or within one hour after the first yacht to finish shall
be scored. All others shall be scored DNF.
7. Penalties
RRS 44.2 One-turn penalty will apply. 36
8. Protests & Appeals
An International Jury shall be appointed, in accordance to RRS Appendix N, and its decisions shall be final and
not subject to appeal (RRS 70.4).
9. Scoring
Scoring will be in accordance with RRS Appendix A – Low Point System,
The Championship shall be valid if:
- at least 12 yachts representing at least 3 European nations are entered,
- 5 races are sailed;
If more than 5 races are sailed, the worst result will be discarded;
If 8 races are sailed, the two worst results will be discarded.
10. Competitor Support Vessels
Tenders, weather boats and support vessels will be permitted within the race course during racing. Regulations
concerning the conduct of those boats will be indicated in the Sailing Instructions.
11. Sailing Instructions
Sailing Instructions will be available at registration at latest.
12. Titles
A European Championship Title will be given to the winner of each Class.
13. Prizes
The International 6 Metre European Championship Trophies are:
- Moderns: the “Coppa Giovanelli” established by the Yacht Club Italiano,
- Classics: the “President Woodrow Wilson Trophy” established by the Royal Danish Yacht Club,
- Classics built according to the First (1907-1919) or Second (1920-1932) Rules: the “August Ringvold Memorial
Trophy” established by the Ringvold Family Trust of Oslo, Norway,
- Vintage Classics: the Baum & König Vintage Trophy established by Peter König. Please note that racing flags are
mandatory for eligibility for this Trophy.
14. Responsibilities
All competitors taking part in the regatta do so entirely at their own risk (see RRS 4: The decision to race).
15. Measurement
All competing boats must conform to the Class Rule.
16. Diving Equipment and Plastic Pools:
Underwater breathing apparatus, plastic pools and their equivalent shall not to be used between the preparatory
signal of the first race and the end of the European Championship 2010.
17. Radio Communication
Except in an emergency or when communicating with the Race Committee, a boat shall neither make radio transmissions while racing nor receive radio communication not available to all boats. This restriction also applies to
mobile telephones.

18. Insurance
Each participating boat must be in possession of valid third party insurance or equivalent, with a minimum cover
of 1.5 million Euros, for the event. Each participant will provide the Organizing Authority with the original of the
yacht’s Insurance Certificate, if requested to do so.
19. Disclaimer of Liability
The organizing authority, the community Ingenbohl-Brunnen and the district of Canton Schwyz will not accept
any liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during, or
after the regatta.
20. Location
Boats will be moored in the harbour of Fallenbach Marina
21. Launching and Parking
Owners must be aware that the marina at Fallenbach, apporox two kilometres along the lake North of Brunnen but
with easy access from the motorway, has only a very small unloading/launching area, although with two lifitng
cranes. Truck drivers must therefore call ahead to the marina, to notify day and times of arrival.
Trucks will then be assigned to a special Call Forward area in nearby quarry. The drivers have to follow the installed signs. There the yachts can be marshalled and called for in an orderly manner, as and when required. Boats
will be lifted off and launched and then moved to the second crane to step their masts, while the trucks are returned
to the special parking area, to enable the next arrival to be called forward.

Competitors should make their own accommodation.
