Zion Majlis
On Saturday, March 19, 2011 the Women’s Auxiliary of the
Ahmadiyya Muslim Community hosted the second Women’s
History Day program “Celebrating Women in our Community;
Past and Present”. Women from diverse walks of life and ethnic
backgrounds were recruited by the Khidmat-e-Khalq secretary,
Laeeqa Ahmad, to do presentations on prominent women from
their perspective past and present.
The program started with an explanation of the Ahmadiyya
Muslim Community and Lajna Imaillah USA by Zion Lajna SadrDhiya Bakr.
Speakers represented a wide array of cultures and experiences. The guest learned about
many significant women such as:

Leymah Gbowee of Liberia and Liberian Christian & Muslim women who
together held a massive prayer for peace that halted a civil revolt(by Joy Bah)
Dr. Ellen Ochoa the first Hispanic woman astronaut (by Sylvia Arellano)
Maria Wright Edelman founder of the Children’s Defense Fund (by Sarah
Pressly-James)
Hadzrat Khadijah (ra), the first Muslim to accept Islam and wife of the Holy
Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.) by the WestMidwest Regional Sadr Samina Ijaz.

Community hosted the second Women’s History Day program “Celebrating Women in
our Community; Past and Present”. Women from diverse walks of life and ethnic

women effected change through social service. Topics addressed were: Domestic
Violence: Breaking the cycle (by Betsy O’Connell-Senior Youth & Community
Educator); Empowering Women & Children (by Darlene Montano from the YWCA);
The influence of war on the field of nursing (by Carole Stewart-Registered Nurse), and
Set on Success- Importance of education from an Egyptian Muslim perspective (by Salwa
Nassr -Member of Sunni Muslim Community) and comments from honored guest such as
Zion & Waukegan cities Township Supervisors Cheri Ditzig and Patricia Jones. Also
presented was Lajna Imaillah USA history of social service by Zion Lajna Sadr Dhiya

lunch from the Ziafat Sho’ba (sisters Mubarika Shams, Bint Alyasa Darr and Aneesa
Nuruddin).
