HERE it is...The Simonsberger for
2006. I really hope you all have a
fantastic read and that we’ll all remember, laugh and cry together
about the good old days in Die
Withuis when we look back at this
at our next big reunion!
If there are any mistakes in the content, I apologise profusely! If there
are any problems, phone me at 082
buzz off. Sit back, relax and enjoy
this Simonsberg style...with a cold
one in one hand and a cigar in the
other. Have a good one and see you
soon, cheers.
STANDI
The end brings a new beginning...
Simonsberg will forever hold a very important place in my
life… It has been a privilege and honour to be Primarius
of “Die Withuis” for 2006. I can proudly report back that
2006 was a successful year for Simonsberg. Simonsberg’s
strength is its people. The history and culture of “Die
Withuis” has been moulded by fellow Simonsbergers
around the world. Simonsberg is only as strong as the
people who reside in its building.
Despite the beauty of our establishment, it is us who steer
the culture of Simonsberg for years to come and create
the history for fellow Simonsbergers to follow. It is for this
reason that I thank you all for a wonderful year and salute
you for making 2006 a fantastic year. Sadly my time at
Simonsberg comes to an end, but hindsight allows for
the perfect reflection of yesterday. I share my fondest
memories with all of you. I thank you all for the good times
and sometimes the sad times.
I have learnt much from you all and it has been a privilege
to lead you in 2006. Special thanks to my House Committee
and Mr Jadezweni for your guidance and help. I will forever
walk through life as a proud Simonsberger.
CP Mouton
moving in as inwonende hoof. From all the Simon manne:
“Sir it is an honour to have you with us, you are already a
Simonman!”
Overall, what a great year!
So what’s next, where is Die Withuis going? To keep the
uniqueness of Simonsberg in a way that only the residents
know.
Blougattyd soos altyd is ’n uitdaging,
sal gebruik. En wie anders as Stephen “Precious” Morgan
vir doopkaptein 2007? Ek weet hy gaan ’n ongelooflike
werk doen.
To manage these challenges the HK identified 3 goals for
the res which we are striving for:
Ek sal nooit my doopkaptein se woorde vergeet nie:
Guys it is awesome to see the amount of English guys
staying in res next year! Jammer Pieter Steenkamp, maar
ons moet plek maak vir ons maatjies!
Let’s have a look at what happened in 2006. Participation in
res activities was awesome, the rugby went great, we won
the gees beker again at first years athletics, blougattyd was
a huge success, Simonstock and intervloer events showed
us the spirit in res, and we had the best organised Met yet.
Many thanks to Cape Town Fish Market for sponsoring us
with some money to work with.
It was also the beginning of a new era with Mr Jadezweni
Rob enslin
The first is Ownership: Participation and upholding of our
three values.
Secondly is Pro-activeness: Organised, paradigm shift
and leadership.
Third and last is Uniqueness: Fun, self-confidence and
balance.
I put all my trust in the HK and know that they will not let
me and you okes down.
Pred. 11:9
Mhlobo Jadezweni
“If you touch his cleanly shaven, shiny, little kop then we
will vote you in!” I overheard them say. Little did I know that
indeed he would touch the head and win the bet. Perhaps,
it is about time we talk diversity. You have to have a heart
of steel to be able to touch a shaven head of a man from
Dutywa. On the one front, such an act means challenging
for a fight. On the other hand only a man of your age
who is a great friend of yours can shave thus touch your
head. Whichever way one looks at it, the act was meant
to be a jest which turned out to have great significance. At
Simonsberg we will continue to be enriched if only we look
closely at each and every little moment and act.
Each one of such acts poses a challenge to us more than
at any other time in the history of the house. The very fact
that 2006 marks the beginning of the second half of the
century of our existence is in itself a challenge. The fact
that this phase is marked by a change of management of
the residence is a major landmark. This should serve as a
beacon in the history of the place. I think we should use
this mark as a means of measuring our progress towards
getting the best for Simonsberg. The mark is very clear
and distinct! Simonsberg is a curious place, indeed. To
have been asked, “…but, where is your USBD uniform?”
This when I tried to stop someone from behaving in an
unbecoming manner at the Met. Why anyone who you do
not know that well must be one of USBD staff is still a
mystery to me. The same USBD when I called them for
a very urgent enquiry, they ask, “Are you a deurwag at
Simonsberg?” to which I replied in the affirmative so as to
hasten their response. It is amazing! Isn’t it? This telephone
call thing can yield a lot of interesting reactions.
Jool tyd is probably the best at Simonsberg. The first year
residents find it most exciting. What a way to begin a year!
After the festive season there can’t be a perfect way to
start an academic year. In no time semester tests were on
our faces and soon thereafter the mid-year examinations
started. Without anyone explaining it to you, as a first
year you know now what varsity is all about. Briefly, it
is about working at pace as soon as classes start. This
is important because the transition between school and
varsity is usually not easy. The Raadgewers do a very
sterling job in our res. Looking at the increased number
of first years who lost their places for 2007 compels this
body to look at other strategies of intervention in order to
change this tide around. What it means for us is that we
will need to tree op even before the danger signs show up.
Some professionalism in this regard will save the situation.
Sharing of experiences among the Raadgewers will also
help a lot.
The HK has been a highly motivated bunch of gentlemen
whose hearts are fully in Simonsberg. Even though the
portfolios were allocated accordingly and severally I have
no doubt in my mind that each of the HK could have taken
on any portfolio at any given time when called upon to
do so. This is how versatile each member of the House
Committee for 2006 has been. They have been able to
complement one another easily.
One will always want to know what it is that binds these
people together in the manner in which they have always
been throughout. This is wonderful! This close bond
among the leadership is infectious because everywhere, in
these corridors, there is this strong spirit of comradeship.
It seems, even the communities outside university have
taken notice of this great way of life – being friendly to one
another.
The enthusiasm with which Simonsbergers support their
rugby teams is noticeable along the touchlines. Any slight
deviation from the rules by the ref is met with vicious
comments, although done in sportsmanship – Dit is mos
rugby. Those refs could have been Simonsbergers at
some stage. No one cares about that. We waited to see
who would eventually go
to the finals, unluckily our
wings were clipped by the
green men from Huis Muis.
Danie De Villiers, the coach,
has done an excellent job
with our rugby in 2006.
Baie dankie Danie en jou
span! To our sponsors
Steinhoff and Cape Town
Fish Market, thank you very
much! Without your support
we would be nowhere on
the sports map.
We know that Simonsberg
won the trapkar competition.
Once again, thanks folks for
this victory for Simonsberg!
We will continue to make our
presence felt everywhere
we feature.
The Huisdans was a
resounding success. For
the glamour and everything,
I give the organizers one
hundred percent. Never
mind that I did not hear
Mandoza and the likes!
The Simonsberg Huisdans
2006 DVD and the accompanying glass will remain in
my special collection forever. Thanks to the Old Boys for
their special contribution towards the success of this great
event. Die Withuis, I know, is and will always be special
to you, manne! We know that you are behind many many
other events and activities at Simonsberg.
The HK circus 2006 and the questions asked during the
evening painted a very clear picture of what Simonsberg
is. That Simonsberg is a special bate for each resident
came out loud and clear. Simonsberg is unique - is another
distinguishing feature that came out at the circus and also
that Simonsberg always takes the initiative or leads from
the front. Out of this circus future leaders emerged. The six
hours during which all this took place was definitely not in
vain. This slot gave us an opportunity to define and map
out the way for the future of Simonsberg, Stellenbosch and
our country, South Africa. Thank you boys!
The Stellenbosch Flying Club flew some of our first year
students, with physical ailments, up the mountain to mark
the end of orientation. This was another great moment
for both Simonsberg and The Stellenbosch Flying Club
because of the relationship that started. They got to know
about the care Simonsberg
has got for one another.
The
Kylemore
High
School project is another
such gesture. Both have
presented us with highly
invaluable partners. We will
nurture these relationships.
At the end of August we
took farewell of “Ouma”,
Mrs. Katleen Lawrence
after thirty years of service
to Simonsberg. What a
moment! The day will
remain forever in the
memories of all the boys.
Ouma could not control her
emotions on the day.
Please folks help me
define “Simonsberg”! Who
is a Simonsberger? Both
questions can only be
answered by those who
were present on this historic
day at Simonsberg.
To Ouma, “Baie dankie,
Ouma, vir jou lojale en
volgehoue
diens
aan
Simonsberg vir die afgelope
dertig jaar.
To Kagiso staff, “Once again, thank you very much for your
service to the boys. We appreciate it very much”
To Tannie Fransie, “Thank you very much for being there
all the time for us even when you are supposed to be off
duty. We really appreciate it.”
As we look into the New Year we shall continue with all the
good work and continue to add value to this place. In the
most respectful manner, we shall continue to define our
Withuis even before anyone else does it for us.
Noblesse Oblige!

here it is...
the social pages...
there are days in a
young man’s life that
define what he will do
and who he will be for
the rest of his life
these were the days of
our lives, some of us
who will be leaving
after this year to those
who are only still
starting their days as a
great Simonsberger...
we enter these
corridors as Blougatte
and we leave as mature
men with a
mischievious nature and
our own touch of class
we give the bloues grief
during Met but only to
get them more excited
for the beer we will
share with them on the
sunday when they come
down from the berg
we sing together and we
dance together, we jool
and we jol and we drink
and we dance a little
more
at one point during the
year we even grab our
instrument and sing
together and we mosh
together
to put the festivities
that we share during the
year into a couple of

The Blougat: steve tindall
Question: How many Simonsberg boys does it take to
screw in a light bulb?
Answer: One. He holds the light bulb and the world revolves
around him…
Harsh, I know, but for some reason it is in this reality that
we, as Simonsbergers, form a bond that cannot, literally
and figuratively, be matched.
But before we could be Simonsbergers, before we could
feel the ‘nugget’, before we could see the dorp, before
touchies op die voorgras, before the khaki, there was
Blou.
‘Blougat’, the manner in which Simonsberg eerstejaars
are affectionately known, is a term that immediately brings
back memories of being woken up in the early hours of
morning to the tune of “Dans Blougat dans”, cutting down
‘Christmas’ trees for our ‘amazing’ vlot, creating patterns
in the sweat on the back of your maatjie, giving the girls
of Sonop a new outlook on breakfast, sun burn, stokperd,
Farmer’s attempted Afrikaans, Mexican-themed swimming
pools, doing a kak job of stealing a cow, rooi broek, a cokie
and a pie from De Vos, CP sneaking up on you, swimming
on the Spele Saal floor (thanks Sterne), ‘Afternoon Delight’,
sleeping through Huis Lied, borselkop, kospakkies,
“Guys guys guys”, Napoleon Dynamite’s bergskoen, Mnr
Nhldebonjangani…., being roped into doing all the kak
jobs, craving a cold beer and MET.
“Die berg is nog ver Blou”, but eventually it did come, and
come, and come, just ask Sterrie… GT was generous
enough to supply us with a small meal on our victory over
the mountain, a fact that contributed greatly to our exit
from the Eerstejaars rugby tournament and signaled the
beginning of the end for our studies at the great University
of Stellenbosch.
We learnt a lot of things in that initial period of euphoria:
1. DO NOT scream obscenities at shady looking cars,
2. ’n Enkel is iets wat jy breek in rugby,
3. How to use the P word,
4. The basins make for an excellent funnel (thanks
Sterne),
5. ‘Big Red’ is not the name of Schalkie’s tea cup,
6. Fines meetings = havoc,
7. The club is a great place for a ‘quiet’ beer, and
8. Always remember to suit in an unmistakably upward
direction.
2006 saw the inaugural ‘Blou-Bal’, a night that proved
the age old adage that there are no ugly chicks at a guys
dance. The wine had no chance, hence not being able to
accurately recall the event.
So where do we go from here? “Blougat, Maandag kom
die duiwel…”
perspective
The HK: andri stander
Question: Why do you decide to stand for HK for a second
year in a row?
Answer: To see the look on 120 blougat faces when you
tell them they’re climbing “Die Berg tomorrow morning at
05:30”.
I know being ‘Die duiwel’ that arrives on the monday is fun,
but being with blougat for the whole of the first two weeks
is something else. The adrenaline rush you experience
while waiting outside before your first spele saal session
as a HK is too incredible to put into words, I think the HK’s
experience more angst than the blougatte do. You picture
yourself eyeballing and harassing the first red-and-white
clothed figure you stumble unto after slamming the door
behind you as hard as you can...untill you walk straight
into Corné Eigelaar and Edrich de Wet, the two biggest
men this side of Merriman road. But you swallow that lump
and tune them anyway, because you know they’re more
scared of you than what you are of them.
Trying to install the idea of “nugget” and “inisiatief” amongst
the bloues pays of its reward when you hear all the stories
going around the res of what Blougat got up to the previous
night. The life-size Fleur de Lis on Irene’s voorstoep and
the blougat-prints on Sonop’s eetsaal windows will make
awesome fireside stories one day.
An even better story is going to be the “Case of the failed
cow robbery”. I couldn’t stop laughing when I heard that
two blougatte were arrested after being caught in Die
Laan, by USBD, with a full grown jersey cow following the
not so discreet livestock thieves.
Trying to keep hundreds of people away from Blougat
during Met is an arduous task, especially now, after three
weeks, that Blougat has become a part of you and you
start to crave the climbing of the mountain as much as the
Blougatte do.
When standing on top of the highest free standing mountain
in the world for the last time you can’t help but shed a tear
and wish that you were up here as a Blougat again, having
your whole Simon life ahead of you, which will contain the
best of times and the hardest of times (telling your dad you
failed Fin Rek). Standing on top of the mountain with a
brother is even better, especially if you know your dad has
been up here too, and you can only hope that the younger
one will perfect the art of Simon life and not get ‘asked to
leave’ like the old man was, or ‘asked to stay’ on account
of the academics as I was.
Simonsberg’s first three weeks are the best of the year,
and the first year is the best of your life. Watching from
the eyes of a HK is just as rewarding. Seeing one of your
bloues playing first team rugby or jamming it up in the club
is better than any spele saal session.

Nadat die algehele tema “What if/Wat as…” tydens die
amptelike Jooltema-bekendstelling op 22 September
verlede jaar bekend gemaak is, moes daar inderhaas
Daar is
besluit op “What if every day was Christmas…” as tema
Daar is in die Onruskaravaanpark in tente gebly, of eintlik natgereën, terwyl
geld in Hermanus ingesamel is.
deurgebring waar daar speletjies gespeel, persente
as deel van haar betrokkenheid by liefdadigheid.
Hier
Fondse is
pad kuslangs gevolg waar Hermanus, Hartenbos, George,
Daar is
altesaam ’n enorme R62 000 op toer ingesamel, waar
R30 000 in die verlede as goed beskou was.
Die tema vir Vensters was “Vice Versa, what if we were
all the same?” en daarom is ’n storielyn van ryk en arm
minste ’n trappie of twee opskuif wanneer 2007 se wenners
aangekondig word.
Forgotten Memoirs and
Matt Sterne & MacDev
With the help of Millers, 180 cases of beer was sold and probably drunk on the
day of the met. I blame them, and only them, for my memory being lost to that day,
I also lost my army helmet, if anyone happened to find it. But allow us to start at
the beginning.
One very hectic week before the met itself the met golf day was held at the Strand
golf course. It was a sunny day with little wind which aided many of the novice golfers as they tried their utmost to put in respectable performances. As the ultimate
goal of sinking the ball slowly warped into not losing the ball, the Klipdrift watering
hole at the end of the fourth was not so much welcome, but seen as more of an
oasis of sorts to some who by that stage had already come to terms with how the
rest of the day was heading. The watering holes strategically placed every three
or four holes added an extra aspect to the game and not all of the golfers actually managed the seemingly impossible task of completing all the holes. Brandy
induced Happy Gilmore drives were the main attraction at the latter holes. All in
all it was a successful day, where we walked away with blisters, rashes, strained
back muscles, sun burn and an oath to never play that stupid game again. I look
forward to next year though, where I have made a promise to myself to actually
finish at least one hole.
On the Wednesday of the Met week, the Met Fashion Show was held at Cancune.
With the twelve finalists sauntering around in clothes which were made purely for
sauntering around in, and blougatte acting as our personal waiters it was always
going to go well. Ettiene van Wyk and Harry Steyn had the privilege of acting as
MC’s for the evening as they got the crowd going with polite banter and prizes.
One of which was a bottle of Nordic Ice which was thrillingly downed on reception
by a thirsty member of the crowd.
Some extra entertainment was offered in the form of a few second years who had
the opportunity to perform a couple of acoustic songs to the delight of their supporters. The fashion show itself was a relaxed affair as the girls showed off what
the crowd had come to see, and the scene was set for a grand finale, as the Met
day loomed ever closer.
The Met day was, on all accounts, a rather energetic affair. The stands were well
filled, the course distinctly barn-esque, and the Blougatte less than diplomatic in
their guard. While there were a good few scuffles – euphemisms are fun – as well
there must be, and while by and by the atmosphere of harmony and sobriety was
competently dispelled, folks had a jolly old time.
True artistry and innovation was exhibited by the various floors, in the form of their
stalls, and the creative genius came together quite nicely - a costume ball on a
battlefield. Though the actual stands were only completed, for the most part, on
the Met day itself, plans and designs are said to have been in development since
the late 1980s. Though consistent efforts were made to inform all, for some reason both SB and SBA I refused to apply a theme to their stall, instead going as
is – a state of affairs that many mistook to be an ingenious representation of the
Hartenbos atmosphere. SBA II succeeded in the ‘you don’t want to let your daughter near me…or your son, for that matter’ look, displaying an all too convincing
“Prison Break” theme, complete with electric (read ‘funneling’) chair and fencing.
SBA III provided a nuanced and well-structured critical commentary on the violence inherent within human nature, cleverly disguised with plastic guns and guerilla-looking war paint, and exhibited absolutely no irony at all in their display of the
American flag. SB III, gripped by the delusion that they were on a remote desert
island, constructed a ship in which to escape. However, infighting and mutiny produced a series of squabbles, and upon finding some rum they decided that only
the Simonsberg Stallion
ridiculous folk would try and escape without at least an outboard motor of some
sort, and so they resigned themselves to saying ‘arrr’ and mimicking the Pirates
of the Caribbean. There was a brief moment when people began to panic for the
sudden appearance of the Republican Party, but fears were allayed when SB II
revealed their ‘caveman’ theme.
The blougatte emerged from their proverbial bootcamp in fine form, sporting the
latest in horse protection technology. Some dispute arose here and there, as the
crowd attempted time and time again to alert said blougatte to the troublesome
appearance of a wasp on the inside of the track – unfortunately, they refused to
listen, and took the enthused pointing as a threatening gesture…thankfully, the
wasp did not strike.
Some attribute the ever-present concentration of blougatte around SBA II’s position to quarrelsome behaviour on the latter’s part. This is, in fact, a misconception.
As it so happened, many of the first years were allied in kin with many of those
in SBA II and III, and in their custom affection is shown by throwing punches and
breaking bones – many are single.
The Met girls, all there for their boundless personality and academic prowess, engaged in fine silent debates on issues such as skirt height and sultry stares, and
both scholars in the audience were duly impressed. The winner was rewarded
with her freedom.
Rumour has it there were horse races as well, but accounts vary.
Mens sal dink
Stevo – jy is ’n legend!
“The Simonsberg Metropolitan – Some legends can never be tamed”.
ander meisieskoshuis betrokke was.
kom.
Bond vs Charlie’s Angels.”
sukses.
Die sosiale veld sal altyd bekend wees as Simonsberg se
mees beroemde slagveld, en hiérdie jaar sal defnintief as
gespit is!?
anders as ’n krokodil.
’n klomp baie honger manne.
Hulle was pragtig! Ek was al by ’n hele paar huisdanse
Well done
ouens!
is na so paar glase wyn...en so paar sambuccas.
Oor die algemeen is die twee belangrikste “afdelings”
in enige manskoshuis baie wyn en genoeg kos. By
Weereens
well done ouens!
vriend, Sterrie a.k.a Die Ghoen. Baie dankie vir al jou hulp
en insette. Sonder jou kon die dans geensins so ’n groot
– red.).
Things Change...
matthew sterne
Things change. From first year to second year is a big
change. At first, however, there are only minor changes.
A few of us were kicked out of res due to the intoxicating
student life and DC++. Our group dynamic took a new form,
and some were keen to grow up. The seniors that we used
to have a few drinks with had moved on to new places,
and of course a new Senaat and HK set a new trend in
our leaders. There were new roommate combinations and
most of us were living in a new part of res. Then there was
the small aspect of one hundred strangers invading our
home.
Jool and the new Blougatte were so disorientating that only
after the Met did things start to resemble reality. Slowly
we adapted into second year and let go of the dream of
being in first year forever. Well, at least some of us did.
There were a fighting few of us (and still are) that would
not accept that we were a year older and our escapades
were clutching at being young forever. Then there was the
increased workload, which was more irritating than the
blonde kid that lives under the braai and always wants to
play sport with us. This posed the question of how much
we were willing to work compared to how much we were
required to. Slowly our priorities changed and we realised
that even if we didn’t want to we also had to change.
If the guys who left res after only one year did anything, it
was to show that we actually aren’t invincible as first year
antics might suggest. They made us value our friends more,
and our place in Simonsberg. The guys in relationships
showed that girls are good for more than just handing out
rugby jerseys.
Weekend getaways became more enticing, as was going
to different places as opposed to just De Lapa and Terrace.
Afrikaans Aand in Nubar, however, proved a little too
different. The introduction to the year was a challenge in
the sense that we needed a new mentality, a second year
mentality, but some of us were just not ready to change.
We missed that novel high from being a first year and the
freedom of using that as the perfect excuse for almost
anything; “Hey, I’m first year, I didn’t know!” Walking out
in a crowd dominating a bar put us in a place that can be
blamed for the feeling of youthful immortality. We slowly
realized that our time is running out, and that we in fact can’t
stay young forever. Sooner or later it will all be gone.
At first I was a little resentful of how things had changed,
why couldn’t things just stay the same? But then I realised
it wasn’t worse, it was just different. In fact, in many ways
it was better. Our best nights aren’t dancing with random
girls in Cancune but Klubaands where the Sambuca flows
and doesn’t get closed at eleven by Moses. From knowing
a few seniors, we not only got to know them more but
from these casual acquaintances came friends. The one
hundred intruders stealing our thunder proved to be just
as cool as we thought we were. Great to have a drink with,
fun to have a laugh with and not that bad at introducing us
to first year girls either.
If friendships blossomed in first year they ripened in
second year. From trusting a guy to buy your booze at the
drankwinkel it developed into trusting him with advice on
your future, girls and whether or not to take a bet involving
Sharks, Province and ear piercing. Some things we did
more and some things we did less. For me, I started
passing my course less and spending more time in the Irie
Bar – I have promised myself there wasn’t a connection.
It is often said that people go to university to find themselves,
well I think many of us have lost ourselves. We have gotten
caught up in the whirlwind life in Stellenbosh and forgotten
about what is most important. What counters that is the fact
that we leave with memories and friends that will support
us until we eventually do find our true path.
It has been a year full of development and many memories
worth remembering. I will always remember Jan van der
Merwe speaking English the way everyone should, Sterrrie
being the most corrupt umpire possible – I will never forgive
him. I will always remember the Drinkstitution, all those
fishbowls, and downing champion Rob Grant. I will always
remember studying B-Commpletely drunk, having the best
kamermaat possible, a Namibian in a corridor of Souties,
the time bomb and the broken fountain. I will always
remember the small things. I will always remember Clark
Kent, THE food fight, the spele-saal and Frans vs. Conrad.
I will always try to forget Pig. I will always remember how
we all got by with a little help from our friends. What I would
like you to remember is this. Always remember that today
is the tomorrow we so longed for yesterday!
Simonstock
Andri Stander
Some say that music has always been the method of
soothing the savage beast.
Whoever said this must have
either been born deaf, or stays
in Majuba, where the number
one downloaded song over
the past eight years has been
“As long as you love me” by
the Backstreet Boys.
In Simonsberg, music was
designed to stir a certain emotion in us that slowly twists
and turns until, after a certain
number of beer slammers and blue
sambucas, it bursts out in a rage of
fury and screams for attention. Attention from those around you, and from
yourself. Whether it be “June Afternoon” in the club, “Op ’n Stasie” in the
showers or “T.N.T.” on a roadtrip on
the R62, music in Simonsberg has always defined that certain emotion that
we struggle to explain.
At a certain point during the year a
number of Simon boys get together
to entertain their fellow inwoners with
their own inspiring renditions of some
of their own favourite songs and also
those that have crept their way into
the hearts of so many party lovers in
Die Withuis. For those who might not
know what Simonstock is, ie. some of
the older Old Boys and those inwoners who still struggle to find the res
late at night on their way back from
the bib or wherever it is that the sluipers gather, I will quickly describe it in
a brief couple of words:
Six years ago one of the HK’s, bless
his soul whoever he might be, decided to host a small internal event
where bands and individual acts from
within res can strut their stuff on a mu-
sical stage in front of the whole res.
Guys were given the opportunity to
either form bands or play solo acoustic sets on the front of the lawn while
the rest of the res would listen (sometimes) and either quietly or loudly
party the night away, depending on
your taste of music and mood. Over
the next couple of years the idea of
Simonstock has developed into the
event that we know it as today. Last
year it was decided that the line up of
acts was too long and that the Saturday night slot would struggle to host
all the talent. Another factor was the
differing moods that acoustic acts and
hard rock acts would entice.
Due to this the new Simonstock Simonsberg week format was installed
that would see the acoustic and hard
rock acts being seperated into a Friday night acoustic event in the club
and the hard rock bands being hosted
on the front lawn. This would ultimately result in the weekend long rage fest
that we know as Simonstock.
Excitement brewed in res for a good
couple of weeks over the always anticipated weekend and, even though
the huisdans was held a mere week
earlier, no-one showed any fear of the
big party that the impending festival
would bring. Everyone with any music talent started practising during the
holidays to sharpen up on those difficult chords and high notes so as not
to embarass themselves in front of the
biggest crowd that most of the Simon
muso’s would ever perform to.
With all the acts ready and some late
band entries popping up at the last
minute, everything was set for the
longest weekend on the Simonsberg
calender.
Raging On!
Thursday kicked of with the interfloor
down-downs in Denim and Diamonds,
with the Jesse Jordan band entertaining the crowed, that was slowly edged
toward the mellow side during the
Down-downs, to some classic favourites.
Friday night was once again to play
host to the Acoustic night in the club,
where the number of James Bond and
007 villian-impersonators would spend
the night singing along to a number
of great acoustic versions of Johnny
Cash, Jethro tull and George Michael,
while burning Nerina for their lack of
presence. Manny Walters swore that
his and Dré’s version of “Faith”, the
number one hit from the above mentioned pop idol, was not his way of
announcing to the world that he has
come out of the closet. Manny and
Dré once again managed to get the
Simon faithful into an uproar over their
sing-along tunes. Paul McIntosh was
happy to open the night with some
well polished personal compositions
and your’s trully also enjoyed his twosong set. Slagyster’s own blougat,
Nel Schoeman gave a very spiritual
performance while Kaalvoet Jannie
and Anthon played a number of their
well-known Afrikaans covers.
The favourite act of the night was
undoubtedly Ivan Hobbs and Jasper
Wickens’ travelling blues and folk set.
The crowd shouted and screamed
and actually managed to encore them
into performing some songs twice!
The evening was successfully closed
off by the man with the smile, Rentzke
Smook, on the acoustic and vocals
with Nicolaas “Snor” Mouton hitting
the lead with beautiful precision.
The Saturday, once again, was the
epitome of absolute chaos! The
evening went pear shaped after Manny and Dré and Slagyster started off
the evening on a rustige note. Unfortunately, due to some technical
problems, Harry and Ettienne’s crew
failed to get through all their songs,
but those that they did manage to
squeeze in before each power trip
was mesmerising.
De Kazzinz and Die George-nommerplate gave a good forty minute set
each of real warm up and sing-along
tunes that greased up the elbows,
throats and mosh-legs for what was
to come. Uys’ lingering rendition of
“Comedown” still rings with great satisfaction in my ears to this day.
Die Stander Gang kicked off the chaos
for the evening with some loud stuff
from the Nudies, AC/DC and Incubus
while Man Bear Pig kept the punks
happy until Saad van die Willehond
could stamp their cult status on The
Stock for another year with their own
Metallica vibe and goosebumpy version of Foo Fighters’ ‘My Hero”.
The biggest tragedy since the flood
of Laingsburg in 1980 hit when the
police arrived at 24:00 and pulled the
plug on what was another successful
Saturday night.
The new installment for this year was
the spiritual musical huiskerk in the
eetsaal on sunday morning. Former
Plush frontman, Rory Eliot, gave an
incredible testimony to his life and
topped it off with six great songs that
had some people (myself) close to
tears.
Thanks to Baba for helping out again
in making The Stock the greatest musical event on campus and good luck
for Manny and Dré for next year!

INTERVLOERBEKER KRY EERSTE BAAS
andri stander
behoorlik aangevat in ’n intervloer
kompetisie. Die intervloerkompetisie
staan van hiérdie jaar af as die
“Simonstock Challenge” bekend en ’n
amptelike trofee is ook vir die eerste
keer in werking geneem.
mekaar sou aanpak is egter in ’n
poker, darts, tafeltennis, krieket
en lawn boules. Die naweek van
Simonstock is van verlede jaar af as
die amptelike intervloer-naweek opsy
gesit en hiérdie jaar is die grootskaalse
intense koshuis-kompetisie weereens
aan die brand gesteek. Hierdie jaar
is die wenners van elke byeenkoms
deur ’n reeks uitkloprondtes besluit,
waar spanne, as hulle die eerste
rondte oorleef, na die halfeindrondte
en uiteindelik die finaal deurdring om
teen die opponente van die ander
helfte van die uitkloprondtes te staan
te kom.
Die wenners van elke kompetisie het
nege punte ontvang, naaswenners
het sewe punte, halfeindrondte-
verloorders het vyf punte ontvang en
die spanne wat in die eerste rondte
verloor het, het elkeen drie punte
ontvang.
Donderdagaand 10 Augutus het die
eerste byeenkoms in dié glorieryke
kompetisie gesien met die intervloer
Down-downs in Denim & Diamonds.
Behalwe vir die belaglike pryse by die
bar het die kompetisie sonder enige
moeilikhede voortgegaan.
ondersterk Senaat-span gemaklik
geklop het. Met SB II en die Senaat
wat baie sterk gelyk het met die
naweek wat voorlê kon enige iets nog
gebeur.
se Oxtail is as naaswenners bekroon.
Voor die Lawn Boules was SB II
in eerste plek met 32 punte, die
HK in tweede plek met 29, SB III in
derde met 26, SBA II en die Senaat
gesamentlik in vierde met 22, SBA I
in sesde met 20, en SB I en SBA III
aan die houtlepel-end met 19 en 16
onderskeidelik.
Dus was dit tussen SB II en die HK om
weg te stap met die eerste Simonstock
Challenge-trofee met die Lawn Boules
wat wink. Ongelukkig was dit SB II
se eerste rondte uitskakeling in dié
Dié byeenkoms was ’n groot sukses
en kan net verbeter soos Simonstock
ouer en meer populêr raak! Good luck
SIMON RUGBY 2006:
I think that about 200 Simonsbergers were at the point of
taking their first drag of the victory cigar two minutes before
the end of the Simon rugby season. The fat lady, who was
warming up her voice, was forced to sit and wait a little bit
longer for her final encore. But then just as we thought we
were gonna make our first Sauer final in a very long time
(I purposefully didn’t put a numerical value as it was very
long ago!), the thirds were on the brink of taking their final,
and the seconds were two minutes from glory…everything
came down as if the final curtain was weighed down with
two and a half tons of bricks and the whole Simon season
crashed in a matter of three gruelling games in four days.
Simonsberg rugby experienced one of the biggest revivals
in recent rugby memory, equal to that of the Nick Mallet
era, or the first year of Jake White’s regime. To mention the
least, we were dismall over the last couple of years: the
firsts always threw away matches in the second half, the
seconds…well…didn’t really exist. The thirds and fourths
did well, considering they played with all the second team
players.
In 2006 we saw a change that made everyone proud to
be a Simonsberg rugby supporter again. a couple of great
wins, including an 11-0 washing of Derby foes, Willows,
set the pace for a good season.
The first team contested one of the toughest Sauer league
seasons in a long time, with the new rules not making it
much easier on the guys, and still managed to claim a semi
final spot on the last day of league clashes, by beating
Majuba 9-3 and steering into one of two open spots
that were contested for by five teams. It was the type of
situation that one of the South African sides always faces
in the Super 14: We had to win, while this team had to lose
to that one without conceding a bonus point and the other
had to gain a bonus point without winning thereby aiding
the other team that had to draw and score three tries in
the process. Make sense? Doesn’t matter, we made it to
the semis!
Everyone was pumped. It was the big Monday, Sauer semi
finals day, and we were ready to step into the spotlight
again. Facing a very strong Huis Marais team was going
to be the toughest ask, but we knew we could take them.
At half time we thought the contrary.
With Huis Muis’ brand of counter attacking style rugby they
weaved through and past us for two very good tries, but
with great fighting guts and hard rugby we managed to
claw our way into their half on numerous occasions.
With things very close and looking as if it could still go
either way, the 12 year old referee decided to take a ten
minute water break with the clock still running. This time
delay was crucial in the outcome of the game and with a
last couple of penalties in the dying minutes and a 9-15
score line, we still had a great shot, but that small injury
time prevailed, and we had to be happy with the semi final
spot we fought so hard for.
The third team showed exactly how the new laws should
be played. A brand of running rugby was the order of
the day for Oupa Joe, Jantjes and Pyp’s large squad of
champagne players. Facing a mixed league of first, third,
fourth and fifth teams wasn’t going to be easy, but a very
CHUCK YOUR CIGAR
good win in the last league day over Dagbreek ensured a
semi final spot for the lads.
A tough encounter against Metanoia’s first team ensued
and a very early penalty was eventually the decider in this
3-0 win. The thirds now had to face league leaders, Eendrag,
in the final. A very tough and lob sided battle persisted from
the kick-off with Eendrag managing to take the lead and
then stretching with a number of good attacking moves.
A 17-3 lead, with ten minutes to go, never looked as if it
would last and, with five minutes to go, this was proven
right with a well worked Simon try. 17-10 was the scoreline
and the boys in red were pushing at the Eendrag half with
great fury and determination, but with the seconds ticking
out, miss Godiva was once again going to sing her loud
chorus to the exit of the second Simon team from their
respective competition.
The thirds were eventually crowned as champions due to
Eendrag fielding a number of unregistered players, one
of them being the current South African Universities fast
bowler. (Wrong sport, we know, but in this league any
South African colours count!).
The second team, aka the Simon Barbarians, played a
very entertaining brand of rugby during the season and
set the third league alight with some blistering speed in the
backs and great ball skills in the forwards.
By claiming the first and second semester trophy, things
looked set for a good season finish. A well coached and
determined Helderberg team couldn’t stop the finesse
of the Simon boys during the semi final and a final show
down with league rivals, Dagbreek, was on the cards. With
two previous losses against the Broederbond boys and the
pressure of being the only Simon team left to still have
a shot at winning their final, this was going to be super
tough.
The final saw probably the best game of the season,
with some scintillating skills and two good tries setting
the pace for a 12-10 scoreline with literally three minutes
to go. Unfortunately a lack of discipline during the game
and a series of high tackles forced the referee (the same
12 year old who sunk the firsts, aided by his 10 year old
refereeing partner) to reach for a yellow card, and thus
ultimately a penalty on the 22 in front of the sticks. (There
is yet an encyclopedia to explain the reason for this law in
the koshuis system).
Two minutes from glory turned into a night of disaster as
the 13-12 final score was enough to sink a whole season’s
happiness…until the team sunk their first couple of post
match beers in the club!
To all the rugby players from the 2006 year:
You guys gave Simonsberg a proud face again, not only
on the rugby field, but everywhere on campus. Thank you
to coach Danie de Villiers for your great vision in aiding
us through the season and teaching the guys what good
rugby is about. Thank you to all the inwoners for the great
support and the friday afternoons in the club that got you
oiled up for the ref slinging sessions during the season.
Well done to all the guys for playing some great rugby and
even though we didn’t get to smoke our cigars, we came
a very long way.

Wilgenhof se boulaanval was veral
The match against the eventual champions, Helshoogte, was an intense affair, with a lot of words exchanged in
the middle. Simonsberg batted first

Simonsberg se trapkarspan het
hierdie jaar besondere vindingrykheid

Simonsberg hulself in verskeie podi-
um-posisies ingejaag.
Die senior span het die eerste-plek

asook die Car-magazine-toekenning

Muurbal, Pluimbal en Tennisballe
In die afgelope jaar het Simonsberg
beide ’n A en ’n B span in die koshuis
muurbal-liga ingeskryf. Betreffende
baie groot was.
kompetisie in Maties sokker se Super
Liga.
die US Staff.
nederlaag teen Helshoogte.
Dus moes die Simon manne hul
laaste wedstryd teen die US staff wen
hulle eerste spanne was.
nuwe kompetisie-rekord is.
Hockey
Simon hockey started the year off on
a bang when our first years and Summer League sides showed exactly
why we are regarded as among the
best hockey residences on campus.
Our first years side was named the
best team at the first years tournament having scored the most goals,
and once again offered an abundance
of talent in the form of new first year
players who would eventually end up
in the Maties setup.
The Summer League side took the title again for the third year running, by
beating Helderberg in the final by 2-0.
speel.
Die eerste span het ’n goeie seisoen
ervaar en ’n paar baie goeie spelers
is ontdek.
stof gebyt.
Met die belangstelling wat elke jaar
Seasoned Simon veterans like Malcolm Ratz showed why he is one of
our best exports by scoring in another
Summer League final.
The Winter league did not share the
same success and even though we
got off to a great start we failed to carry the season through and a couple of
draws and losses in the critical stage
of the season cost us dearly.
We managed to finish third with 28
points behind Stellenbosch Oaks II
who had 31 points and Dagbreek II
who finished second on 30 points. Out
of the twelve games played we won
four, drew four and lost four, thereby
ending the season with a number of
“what if’s?”, but doesn’t resist the guys
from keeping their heads high with a
good season performance.
so vlot verloop soos dit doen sal ons
binne die volgende seisoen of twee
met ’n beker wegstap en ’n nuwe
groot sport op ons lys kan sit.

Brokeback Hamlet
...a review
Matthew MacDevette
Prejudice is fun, despite what the
liberals tell you. As the altogether
not so savoury Brokeback Hamlet
evidences, taking such old and tired
themes as the mockery of the not so
straight can still provide fresh and not
at all arbitrary comedy. Who needs
edge when one has such fine toiletry?
Apart from the judges, I mean…
So, as you should know by now,
the script for the play is actually an
adaptation of a sixteenth century
manuscript by Nostradamus entitled
“opium is fun when you’re already
crazy”. Diligently, painstakingly, the
cast and directors took as much as ten
minutes to decipher and translate the
text, and a further twenty or so to give it
a modern spin. “The Apocalypse shall
cometh upon a wing’d beast that will
decimate humankind and perpetrate
unspeakable horror upon the world”
was quite straightforward, and so in
accordance with prophecy Afrikaans
pop stars were added.
“Demon
spirits shall run ruin, the streets
shall be possessed of lunacy and
the limbs of the leviathan shall twist
themselves in maligned depravity”
was the prompt for the addition of a
few dance numbers, and “Do a spoof
on Brokeback Mountain” made for
interesting inspiration for a spoof on
Brokeback Mountain. The rest is pretty
much a direct translation. Promise.
The plot, as far as I can remember,
has something to do with Afrikaans
pop stars shooting a music video
in a small, conservative dorpie
inhabited by floral-wearing oumas
and inexperienced, over-eager plaasmeisies. Nicholas Louw, being one
of the main protagonists (and the
subject of an anonymous Doctoral
Thesis on the psychology of suicide),
goes about working his undeniable
charm on said farm-girl, and in the
process evokes the wrath of her
right disagreeable ouma. As a result,
the old bat exercises that trademark
Afrikaner amiability towards outsiders
and tries to shoot him, which provides
an excellent opportunity for the
impromptu appearance of that victim
of fashionable lunacy, Chuck Norris.
Many scholars have speculated on
the appearance of Chuck Norris in
the play, most theorizing that at the
time of writing the scene in question
Nostradamus accidentally tipped his
inkpot into the manuscript, but we think
it genius. After Chuck is dispatched by
a skillful shotgun shot, stuff happens
and things work out.
The sub-plot concerns two not so
eligible young men named Jurie Els
and Kurt Darren. The play, in defiance
of taste, makes of them an avenue of
slapstick; having them engage in a
steamy love affair and disproving the
theory that jokes wear.
Hestri Cloete (played a little too
realistically) makes a brief and
disturbing appearance, portraying the
jealous and unwitting girlfriend of the
(once) closeted Jurie. Added to these
characters are the dancers, a group
of frivolous and superficial nitwits
who wiggle their bottoms in time to
the soundtrack and spontaneously
acquire Latino roots. The chaos is
ineffectually managed by the Director,
a man automatically made silly by
his unforgivable attempt to spread
Afrikaans music.
All in all it went down rather well, with
few nervous breakdowns and only
one domestic disturbance. We all
had good fun being silly, not taking
ourselves too seriously, and by and by
it was well worth the years and years
of practice that went into it.
Thanks must go to Spook, chief
translator, and the chicks from Erica.

A Special word...
THIS IS just a quick mention to those who were forgotten
during the earlier setup of the magazine...
Firstly, a really special mention must be made of “Ouma”,
Katleen Lawrence, who left Simonsberg earlier this year
after 30 years of service! Ouma worked in the Simonsberg
kitchen since the days that we had our own catering done
and served under Chief Molefe, who is our second longest servent. Ouma, you will forever be in our thoughts and
hearts when we think about the people who have served
our res with great humility and passion. We said goodbye
to Ouma on the 1st of September this year durig a Friday
lunch. She received a gift from the res as well as the honour of handing out the first team rugby jerseys for their
I’D ALSO just like to use this chance to congratulate Mr
Jadezweni on his first year at Simonsberg. Sir, you really
have made such an immense impact in your first year in
Die Withuis. Your humility and eagerness to get involved
really sets you apart in Simonsberg.
As Rob said at his Hane Dinee speech, “Your willingness
to just sit back and learn from us, instead of enforcing your
own beliefs, really makes you a big man”.
You are always willing to come and have lunch with the
guys in the eetsaal and to just make casual chat with a
new group of Simon manne every day. The guys notice
your passion and involvement and this will make you a
great man in Simonsberg.
What will really count in your favour is your vision for the
future and your knowledge of where this country has come
from, as you will be able to blend the different cultures of
our res into a well oiled machine, ready to take on anything
in the true sense of our leadership style.
As you mentioned, this year should be used as a mark in
the history of Simonsberg. This couldn’t be more true as
we step into a new age under your guidance and I am sure
that when we return in a couple of years, you will still be
here as the Inwonende Hoof of the best residence on the
Stellenbosch campus.
Well done on a great first year MJ and we hope it will just
improve as you grow wiser in our traditions so that you
may also spend many a decade with us.
Friday afternoon clash.
It was moving to see the emotion on Ouma’s face during
the singing of Old Boys of Simon and even though the
gender of the song isn’t completely accurate, it still felt
very appropriate to bid farewell on such a proud note to
someone who is honoured as a special Simonsberger.
Just a quick reality check: The first Prim that Ouma served
was Johan “Kolhaas” Mouton. The last Prim that she
dished up for is CP Mouton. Hopefully most of the guys are
bright enough to figure out the similarity in surnames and
will notice that “Kolhaas” is in fact CP’s dad...Nugget.
Ouma, you are a true Simonsberger and we wish you all
the best in your future endeavours!
...and some last shots
a last thought...
If one had to bottle what Simonsberg is, put a lable on it, and
try to market it, you would lose all your money and go absolutely bankrupt.
What happens in this place can only be understood by the
people who stay here. There is a distinct bond that the gentlemen form Die Withuis experience that no other residence
has. Blougattyd, The Met, Simonstock... How do you justify
and explain these things to an outsider? How do you explain
to one of the stuckup dinosaurs on the university board that it
is the most fun in the world to be “insulted” as a Blougat? How
climbing a mountain is the best feeling in the world?
Res life makes this university what it is and that is something that the head honchos at our great institution don’t understand, that if they changed how things work, they simply
won’t work anymore and they would simply not be at the lead
of a great institution anymore. We make this place great, the
traditions, the pride and the unity of a resident, especially that
of a Simonsberger. When we were a couple of years old we
started the oldest res tradition on campus in the Met, even
ahead of a res that it is twice as old as us. This just shows
where we come from.
I spent nigh on 70 hours putting this year’s Simonsberger together, and it’s amazing what you can learn from just looking
at photos and reading some articles.
Guys, we live in a great place...the best place. Some of us
stay for just a year while some of us stay for five and six
years...respect. This place becomes a part of us and we become this place. Remember what CP said in his Prim speech
at HK-circus: “Simonsberg is nie die gebou of die gras of selfs
The day we leave this place isn’t the day we cease to be a
Simonsberger, it is simply the day that we go out into the
world as a Simonsberger. The day we leave the halls of our
former home and go talk to everyone else about where we
came from.
I had a tear in my eye when I sang Die Huislied for the last
time at Hanedinee and I know many of the others who are
leaving had that same tear. To all those guys, I bid you a farewell and hope to see you soon. To the guys that are staying,
cherish what you have, it passes in a fleeting moment.
This was the best time of my life, and my aim with this year’s
Simonsberger was to try and capture as much as possible of
the moments we shared together in Simonsberg. There are
lots of photos, jokes and in-depth stories from 2006.
When some of us return for the next big reunion, we will look
back at these pages and laugh together again.
So if you’re ever in a pub in London, or on a cruise ship in the
Carribean and you hear the familiar tune of “Simon boy in a
ring”, or you see someone with a Simon tie in an office in Dubai, know that you have found some old and distant friends
again, whether they be twenty years older or younger, al of
us are brothers.
Guys, form my side, I hope you enjoyed the Simonsberger of
2006. Until we meet at the Met next year.
Keep well and God Bless.
