beseer toe ‘n witrenoster met ‘n kalf die groep
stappers gestorm het.
Die voorval het Maandag sowat ‘n kilometer
buite die Wolhuter voetslaankamp in die suide
van die Park plaasgevind.
Een van renoster koeie het die groep stappers
gestorm nadat gidse nie daarin kon slaag om
die twee diere te verwilder nie. Een van die
koeie het ‘n toeris wat agter ‘n rots geskuil het,
gestorm. Die gidse het skote geskiet in ‘n
poging om die diere weg te jaag.
Een van die koeie is ongelukkig gekwes,
maar het daarin geslaag om weg te kom.
Die toeris het beserings aan haar ribbes en
enkels opgedoen en het ook verskeie
kneusplekke. ‘n Dokter is vanaf Skukuza na die
toneel gevlieg om die aard van haar beserings
vas te stel.
Sy is daarna na ‘n hospitaal gevlieg waar sy
behandeling ontvang. Die algemene bestuurder van die Marula-streek, Sithembile
Mhlope het dit as ‘n ongelukkige voorval
bestempel. Die bestuur is verlig dat sy oorleef
het en wens haar ‘n spoedige herstel toe.
In ‘n tweede voorval het ‘n aggressiewe
olifant ‘n motor bestorm en dit omgegooi.
Dié voorval het tussen Berg-en-Dal en
Skukuza plaasgevind.
Die bestuurder van die motor het beserings
aan sy knieë opgedoen toe hy uit die voertuig
probeer ontsnap het. Hy is op die toneel deur
een van die Park se dokters behandel.
Dit wil voorkom asof die toeris te naby die
trop olifante stil gehou het en dat daar kalfies in
die trop was.
Die hoof uitvoerende beampte van die KNP,
Abe Sibiya het sy verligting oor beide voorvalle
uitgespreek. ‘Geen lewensverlies is gely nie en
die toeriste het die beste moontlike mediese
sorg ontvang.’

Hat leads to robbers arrest Rhino poachers

A MAN suspected of attacking and then robbing an elderly
couple appeared in the Hoedspruit Magistrate Court on
Monday for robbery.
Mashala Kenneth (27) from Finale Village near Hoedspruit was arrested after a hat that he left at the crime scene,
was identified by the residents.
'It is alleged that a 54-year-old woman was going to the
toilet when she bumped into the suspects who was waiting
outside of the couple’s house,' said spokesperson of the
Hoedspruit police station, Constable Livhuwani Mulaudzi.
The woman was hit over the head with an unidentified
weapon.
The suspect then led the victim into her house and
demanded to speak to the women's husband, a 93-year-old
man. After threatening the man, the suspect managed to
steal an undisclosed amount of money from the house.
Kenneth is currently out on R2000 bail.
Fuel thieves foiled
where they bought the diesel from,' said spokesperson of
the Hoedspruit police station, Constable Livhuwani Mulaudzi
Mulaudzi said that the suspect had three 25 litre containers and three 20 litre containers filled with diesel on the
back of their bakkie.
She said after interrogations the suspect told the police
they got the diesel from the Bavaria Fruit Estate.
The suspects each received R1 000 bail and their case has
been postponed to December 10 for further investigations.
THREE suspected diesel thieves appeared in the Hoedspruit
Magistrate Court for theft on Monday.
Doctor Mnisi (41), Edia Mhpuru (22) and Mpho Mohlala
(31) were arrested during a road block near the Khamai
Reptile Park between Hoedspruit and Tzaneen on Sunday
night.

The suspects are remanded in
custody and their case has been
postponed to November 20 for

Constituency office reaches out
THE African National Congress (ANC) Constituency Office in the Maruleng Municipality
has handed out a total of 340 blankets to
elderly people as part of its outreach programme at Hlohlokwe Village last Wednesday.
Spokesperson for the ANC in the Provincial
Legislature, Phuti Lekganyane said through a
joint effort between the municipality's community development workers and the administrators of the ANC's Constituency Office, over 300 elderly people were identified
and selected from the municipality's 34 villages to receive blankets.
A person deployed from the Provincial
Legislature in the Maruleng Municipality, Dr.
Hunadi Mateme said the event was aimed at
strengthening relations with the elderly

3 days without power
HOEDSPRUIT residents and business owners
are furious after the certain parts of town were
left without power for three days last week.
Susan Scheepers of Loerie Guesthouse had
to contend with a guesthouse full of international guests and no electricity. 'No
power, no airconditioning and refrigerators
and freezers left to defrost for two days! What
is going on in this country that after two days,
no fault could be found?,' Scheepers asked.
Another business owner that was affected by
the power outage on Friday and Saturday,
Jacobus Christiaan Jansen van Vuuren, of
Sunset Butchery, said 'My customers were not
happy. The scale was not working and that
made it difficult to measure the right amount of
meat they ordered.'
Van Vuuren said although he didn’t suffer to
many damages, he feared that the power
situation would affect his refrigerators.
Petro van Heerden of Sable Tours in Hoedspruit said the power outage had a very
negative impact on business.
'We had to switch on the generator in order
to use our computers and internet as most of
our work is done through the internet,' said
Van Heerden.
She said even though they used the generator, some of their equipment had to be
switched of, as the generator couldn't cope
with the load of the entire office.
Thiofi Ratshitanga, a spokeperson of Eskom
said that the company wouldn’t have been
able to notify the community in advance,
because it was not a planned power outage.
'It was just a technical error which caused
the cables to be faulty in some parts of
Hoedspruit,' said Ratshitanga.
Ratshitanga added that technicians were
working on the fault, but it took longer than
expected as the workers had to replace most of
the damaged cables, which meant the power
was only restored on Sunday morning.
When Ratshitanga was asked if the community may possibly experience more of the
effects of other 'faulty cables' in the near
future, he replied saying, 'I don’t anticipate
any more problems any time soon.'

Leopards’ movements
tell an interesting tale
THE Moholoholo Rehabilitation’s
Centre has been extremely busy
the last two years in their efforts to
rescue leopards from farms where
livestock is being threatened by
the animals.
In 2011, four leopards were
translocated by the Centre to the
75,000 hectare Majete National
Park in Malawi.
All the animals were fitted with
satellite collars which the Centre is
still monitoring.
The movements of the animals
were tracked and show that all
four leopards left the park, only to
return a day later. The Centre also
noticed that the four wandered
across the entire park and only
after 10 months settled in their
own 'corners' of the park.
2012 thus far has also seen nine
leopards rescued by the Centre,
four of which will be translocated
to Malawi. The first two leopards
will be transported by plane on
November 16.
The state veterinarian examined
and ran tests on the animals and
has given them the all clear.
Of the nine cats, three have
been released locally.
On October 18, one leopard
was released, also with a GPS
satellite collar attached. 'This leopard has covered 136kms in two
and a half weeks! And it will be
very interesting to see where she
will eventually land up,' said a
representative from the Centre.
According to the Centre, 'There
are moments when we hold our
breaths as they wander near a
potentially dangerous area and
then fortunately veer off. To us this
is wonderful news as there are
limited areas we can now release.
'The Kruger Park and Associated
Private
Nature
Reserves(APNR) are not allowing
leopards to be released in their
areas anymore due to parasite diseases and territorial conflicts.'
Some bad news from the leopard program is that five of the
leopards who have collars, have
been caught in snares/traps.
'One that we released was
snared near Barberton after covering more than 300kms,' the
Centre said.

A CARACAL was released into the Kapama Private Game Reserve after it spent six months at
Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre.
Caracal released into reserve
A MALE caracal was released last Sunday
morning into Camp Jabulani's property on the
Kapama Private Game Reserve after it spent six
months at Hoedspruit Endangered Species
Centre.
The young male had been brought to the
Centre on May 17 after it had been caught in a
trap cage on a farm. According to Ameé Stern
of the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre,
the animal's age is not yet known.
The caracal was placed into quarantine at
the Centre to allow him to mature and also to
ensure that the animal is free from any diseases, before being released.
Centre experiences ‘baby boom’
HOEDSPRUIT.- Earlier this year, the Big Cat
and Endangered Wildlife Centre experienced a
’baby boom’ to five of their cheetah families,
with a total of 17 cheetah cubs being born in
one month.
Overall the adorable cubs are healthy, and
have been growing stronger with each passing
day, with some of them having been recently
moved to the teenage enclosure, to allow

KNP honours
employees
THE South African National Parks(SANParks)
hosted the Nxanatseni Regional Awards at the
Mopani Conference Centre on Friday.
The awards were attended by the employees
of the Kruger National Park from camps across
the Park.
The Mopani Camp choir entertained attendees throughout the award ceremony.
The purpose of the event was to acknowledge the outstanding service in the workplace
by staff and also to present group awards to
different bush and rest camps.
The managing executive of the Kruger National Park, Abe Sibiya addressed those
gathered.
‘We must continue to see new benchmarks
and define best practices, good performance
inspires excellent performance,’ said Sibiya.
Outstanding service awards in the workplace were achieved by 14 employees and
awards for outstanding service to tourists and
clients, were also presented to five employees.
The Camp of the Year award went to Olifants
Rest Camp while Bush Camp of the Year went
to Shimunwini Bush Camp.
Gate of the Year was awarded to Punda
Maria Gate which is the most visited gate of the
KNP.
Olifants Camp and Shingwedzi Camp received the Ranger’s Post of the year. The
special Regional General Manager’s awards
were presented to Rodgers Hobyane and Ellina
Mona.

Die simposium word georganiseer en aangebied deur die Suid- Afrikaanse Lietjiekwekersvereniging en die Landbounavorsingsraad - Instituut vir Tropiese en Subtropiese
gewasse.
Die organiseerders glo dat daar 'n platvorm
van gemeenskaplike belang by die simposium
geskep gaan word, wat geleentheid sal bied vir
wisseling van voorstelle en ter versterking van

MPUMALANGA Diepsee Hengel Klub het
hul jaarlikse prysuitdelings funksie onlangs
gehou.
Die jaar was ‘n besonderse jaar vir ‘n paar
hengelaars onder andere Lise Smit.
Smit is benoem as Mpumalanga se Hengelaar van die Jaar.
Vir die afgelope twee jaar het die gesogte
'Hengelaar van die jaar' toekenning Hoedspruit hengelaars te beurt geval.
Johan van Vuren, was die gekose hengelaar
vir 2011. Gedurende November 2011 het Lise
op die Drie Faset Nationale Kampioenskappe
‘n Dorado vis gevang van 11.9kg op die 6kg lyn
klas wat aan haar die gesogte prys besorg het.
Die uitsonderlike Dorado het aan haar ‘n
Afrika-, Suid Afrikaanse-, Mpumalanga- asook
‘n Hoedspruit rekord besorg.
'‘n Groot dankie aan die HDHK kommitee
vir die harde werk en entoesiasme wat dit vir al

THE Hoedspruit Deep Sea Angling Club (HDHK) held their annual golf day at Drakensig
Golf Club, on October 20.
Despite a threatening start to the day, the rain
held off to ensure that all the players were able
to get in a fun-filled 18 holes.
Nobody went hungry or thirsty, with regular
stops being made at the waterholes for a wors
roll, or to raid the bar or visits to Zandpruit’s
snacks and Zip Computers shooters.
After an enjoyable morning on the course, a
prize giving was held at the Drakensig Club
House veranda, while everyone tucked into
Sharifa, 'The Travelling Chef’s' delicious
snack platters.
First place was taken by Team BJ Blyde, with
Safari Club in second.
The HDHK would like to thank Drakensig
Golf Club for the opportunity to hold their gold
day at such a beautiful course, as well as all
their sponsors.
