Poisoned game found
in Hoedspruit area
AN adult female Cape Vulture was found
dead on a farm just outside Hoedspruit.
Farmer Dave Holliday said the
bird was found on Sunday morning.
According to Holliday, the bird was
visibly poisoned. ‘We took the bird
to Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre
where Brian Jones confirmed that she
had been poisoned, ‘said Holliday.
‘We feel this could be the tip of the
iceberg as more birds could have been
targeted and we will a search as well of
the area, ‘he said.
According to Holliday, André
Botha, manager of the Birds of Prey
Programme (BoPP) at the Endangered
Wildlife Trust (EWT), would be
conducting an aerial search on Tuesday
over the area.
Holliday said the female could also
have had a nest as she was at the age of
breeding.
Founder of Moholoholo Rehab Centre,
Brian Jones confirmed he had assessed
the bird. ‘The bird was in good physical
condition and it was visibly clear it had
been poisoned’, he said.
Jones said he believed the vultures
were being targeted by poachers in
the area. ‘The area which the bird was
found has been increasingly targeted
by poachers. We even found leopards
in snares there. They have targeted the
birds so they don’t point out the rangers
where a rhino or an elephant has been
shot,’ said Jones.
Jones said an incident had occurred
earlier in May in the same vicinity, when
a total of 65 vultures of various ages as
well as a single adult tawny eagle were
found dead from poisoning .
Sanparks reported in the Vlakteplaas
area in the Kruger National Park last
month, rangers found a carcass of an
elephant with dead animals scattered
around it.
Lowvelder had reported that various
scavengers had descended on the
carcass and as a result were poisoned
while the face, feet and back skin of
one lion had been removed, which led
to suspicions it might have been for
muti. Birds that were killed included 46
African white-backed vultures as well as
one sub-adult bateleur.
Park spokesperson William Mabasa
confirmed it was not the first incident
of poisoning in the park and that
other cases had been reported on the
boundaries of the Kruger.

Illegal road
blockers
arrested
THREE men suspected of conducting illegal
road blocks appeared in Naphuno Magistrate
Court on Monday for common robbery.
According to Hoedspruit police
spokesperson, Constable Livhuwani
Mulaudzi, the suspects who parked their
Mercedes Benz across the road and robbed
motorists, were arrested last Thursday
around 23:00 in The Oaks road.
‘The suspects stopped motorists and
demanded that they give them money before
they can drive through,’ said Mulaudzi.
One of the victim reported the matter to
the police when the suspects robbed him of
cash and took his alcohol as well, after he
refused to adhere to their rules.
The suspects were arrested after they
stopped an police vehicle.
The officers were asked to pay but they
told the suspects that they didn’t have money
on them. They asked the suspects to drive
with them to the garage.
When they arrived at the garage the
police arrested them. The suspects, Ernest
Matukane (20), Kgolofelo Mothwa (32), and
Collen Shai (23) were given bail of R800 and
their case was postponed to November 24 for
further investigations.
Girl raped
near tavern
ACORNHOEK police are searching for two
men who raped a young woman who was
visiting her boyfriend last Saturday.
According to Acornhoek police
spokesperson, Lieutenant Mpho Nonyane,
the 20-year old victim was waiting outside a
tavern for her boyfriend when the attack took
place.
‘The two suspects approached her and
demanded that she give them her belongings.
They took her cellphone and undisclosed
amount of cash,’ said Nonyane.
After taking her cash and phone they
dragged her to the nearest bushes where she
was raped.
After the ordeal, the victim told her
boyfriend what happened and they both went
to the police to report the matter.
It is alleged that the boyfriend told the
police he thinks he knows who the rapists
are. On Tuesday there was no arrest made
and the police are still searching for the
suspects.

Carjacker killed in
crossfire
A suspected car hijacker was killed in
crossfire with the police.
According to Acornhoek police
spokesperson, Lieutenant Mpho Nonyane,
the incident happened after the police gave
chase to the suspects who had hijacked a
vehicle in Technical Trust last Thursday
evening.
‘It is alleged the victim was seating in
his car near his gate with his friend when
they were approached by two suspects.
One suspect who was in the passenger’s
side pointed the victim with a firearm,’ said
Nonyane.
The victim and the suspect had a shuffle
and the victim was shot on the left breast.
The suspects then demanded the keys from
the driver and they sped off. It is alleged the
suspects pick up their girlfriends and they
went for a ride to Saliki near Greenvalley
Trust.
Police got information about where the
suspects were and they went after them.
When the suspects saw the police vehicles
they drove off in a high speed but later lost
control of the car.
One of the suspect started shooting at the
police officers and they retaliated.
The suspect, Nyiko Mlambo (27) was shot
dead and police arrested his accomplice
and his girlfriend after it emerged that the
firearm used was stolen from her uncle.
The other suspects, Thabang Mashile (22)
and Thakgatso Chiane (22) were remanded
in custody after they appeared in Acornhoek
Magistrate Court.
Residents association (BRA)
to sue minister of justice
BUSHBUCKRIDGE residents association
(BRA) intend to file a lawsuit against
minister of justice and correctional services,
Michael Masutha for illegally detaining their
leader, Delta Mokoena.
This was said in the press briefing that
was held at BRA’s office in Tsakani Trust last
Wednesday where they vowed not to allow
people to use state resources against them.
‘We have noted with concern the
continuous persecution of our leader. We are
particularly disturbed by the abuse of state
resources to achieve that.
We have instructed our attorneys to file a
lawsuit,’ said BRA spokesperson, Promise
Moripa.
He confirmed that Mokoena handed
himself to the police in October 21 and
he appeared in court where magistrate
George Risimati reinstated his five years
imprisonment sentence.
‘The arrest was just a conspiracy, I know
that there are some politician that want me
out before the local elections start.
Arresting me was one of their efforts to do
so and someone has confessed that there is a
plan for my assassination,’ said Mokoena.
He also claimed that when he was
detained the correctional service officials
refused to put him in a cell but made him to
sleep in the admin.
The reinstatement of his sentencing was
for the various cases that he was linked to
and sentenced to a combination of five years
in 2013 but he was released on R10 000
bail on February 14, 2014 after lodging a
notice of application for release from custody
pending determination of appeal by the
circuit of the high court.
Mokoena has been accused of a string of
vigilante crimes and he was sentenced to
two years imprisonment for intimidation
and three years for accusing someone of
practising witchcraft and setting his house

He was sentenced to three years in prison
for unlawfully evicting Aaron Zitha (51) and
two years for accusing someone of being a
witch. Mokoena and a mob torched 68-yearold Ranson Mashile’s in August 2012 after
accusing him of bewitching his close friend
and killing him.
Mokoena has been sleeping in the
Acornhoek police station since August 19
2012 until Mokoena was sentenced to two
years imprisonment.
According to the court Mokoena instructed
Zitha to leave his house in Ga-Boelang village
after claiming that his 18-year-old son was a
thief.
Mokoena threatened to tell the community
to set him and his house alight if he did not
leave.
Zitha and his family eventually left the
area and moved to Timbavati Village a few
kilometres away.

We noted that Constable Livhuwani
Mulaudzi reported what the suspect
"allegedly" had done, when she showed the
victim a middle finger.
Then, without noting that it is only alleged,
he states "she used the k-word and called him
a baboon...". He then also named the suspect.
It is not for the good Constable to state that
a certain person indeed used certain words.
The suspect denies it and it can only be
published as a fact after the court has found
so.
To put the matter in perspective you should
also publish what happened subsequently.
On the 21st of October 2015 a case was
registered with the police at Hoedspruit,
reference CAS 59/10/2015.
In this case the suspect, of whom you
reported, filed charges against a policeman
for alleged police brutality, consisting of inter
alia crimen injuria, harassment and assault.
Whilst it is important to report criminal
matters Constable Livhuwani Mulaudzi
should refrain from making statements to the
press when the matters are still sub judice.

Gertjie leef voort by HESC
HOEDSPRUIT Endangered Species Centre
(HESC) is waarskynlik meer bekend vir
sy Cheetah teelprogram as die res. Hulle
fokus egter ook op die bewaring van ander
kwesbare en bedreigde spesies, met die klem
op behandeling en rehabilitasie.
Die sentrum se gunsteling stiefkind, Gertjie
die renoster, se ma is deur stropers op 'n
plaas in die Hoedspruit area geskiet toe hy so
vier maande oud was. Hy is in die bos gevind,
langs die liggaam van sy dooie moeder en
na die sentrum gebring. Die eerste rukkie by
die sentrum is hy 24 uur 'n dag bewaak deur
vrywilligers wat beurte gemaak het om tyd
saam met hom in die boma deur te bring.
By HESC is een van hul metodes om so 'n
weesdiertjie se pad makliker te maak, om die
diertjie van 'n surrogaat moeder te voorsien.
In Gertjie se geval was die eerste paar
pogings nie suksesvol nie totdat Gertjie vir

ernstige stappe neem om seker te maak ons
renoster vriende is veilig.
President Jacob Zuma het juis verlede
naweek (1 Nov) besoek afgelê aan die
Kruger Nasionale Park om 'n teen-stroping
bewusmakingsdag te lei, sowel as om die
nuwe Gesamentlike Operasie Sentrum in
Skukuza te open. Tydens hierdie besoek het
die President en sy gevolg, eerstehandse
ervaring opgedoen van die skaal van renoster

Hy het ook die geleentheid gebruik om
die omliggende gemeenskappe te versoek
om te help: "Ek wil graag die geleentheid
gebruik om alle gemeenskappe na aan die
KNP te versoek om bewus te raak van die
gevolge van renoster stroping. Baie van die
mense in hierdie gemeenskappe, weet reeds
dat gewetenlose stropers nie skroom om
kwesbare mense in hierdie gemeenskappe
met groot bedrae geld om te koop om hul te
help nie. Ons kan almal iets doen om hierdie
mense te stop, deur die owerhede in kennis
te stel van enige onwettige stroper operasies
as mense daarvan uitvind," aldus President
Zuma.

inaugural Kruger 2 Canyons Cycle Tour in
August. The tour traversed four of the most
beautiful private nature
reserves in the Kruger to Canyons
Biosphere - Blue Canyon, Kapama, Timbavati
and Thornybush - who generously allowed
the cycle tour to route through their
properties thus making the tour into the
first such event in a ‘Big Five’
area. The funds will be used by the reserves
in their anti-poaching
initiatives. A portion of the money raised
will also be used by the newly
established Hoedspruit Rotary Club for
humanitarian projects in the greater

Hlokomela changes lifes
MIYA Yamanouchi said, ‘We can all make
a difference in the lives of others in need,
because it is the most simple of gestures that
make the most significant of differences.”
These words came to light at the annual
Hlokomela AGM meeting 2015, held at
Amafu Forest Lodge in Kampersrus last
Friday.
Hlokomela started 10 years ago in a small
office with only two employees. Christine du
Preez (founder) and Antoinette Ngwenya
(project manager) went from farm to farm
raising awareness about HIV/AIDS.
Today, 10 years later and with the support
of the International Organization for
Migration(IOM) since the very beginning, the
organisation has grown in leaps and bounds.
With 10 clinics and 56 employees, they now
reach 25 000 beneficiaries every year.
Financial Manager Albert Matumba
gave light on what their greatest financial
difficulties they had faced during the year.
He said although they had backing from
the department of Health and Discovery
Fund, these only covered their project
funding.’ We face financial challenges as
covering our insurance costs for the year.
This is where we need the general public to
come forward and help us to carry on with
our work,’ said Matumba.
He added that banks would help normal
companies when they had financial strains
with an overdraft, but an NGO would not get
that option. ‘I take my hat off to Christine du
Preez who has run this project for nearly 10
years now, the stress is immense to keep the
project going,’ he said .
Then Project Manager Antoinette Ngwenya
gave a run down on her current projects in
regards to the sex workers project and HIV
counselling and testing.
She said the sex workers project was a joint
project they did with SWEAT, a national
based NGO who dealt with the rights of sex
workers countrywide.
The next speaker was the Clinic Manager
Sr Roslyne Nxumalo who thanked all the
stakeholders for attending.
The meeting ended with a buffet lunch for
the visitors.

dedication to a beloved member
of our community who is battling
several forms of cancer.
Despite suffering excruciating
pain daily, Monica is a rock in
our community and at school.
She never gives up, never loses
hope and her unwavering faith is
an inspiration to us all.
All the classes from Grade R
to Grade 7 gave performances of
Broadway musical quality. Solo
performances by the singing
duo:
Annique Smit and Divan
Swart, as well as dance
sensation, Suné Muller gave
a more personal colour to the
event. The Drakie teachers
enthusiastically took the stage
with their unique version of
“Hillbilly Rock”.
It was an amazing event which
will be remembered fondly by

sessie in die koue en re?n. Nadat
hulle hulle eie aandete, potjiekos,
voorberei het, is daar ver gestap
met ‘n naglyn in die stikdonker.
Baie gegiggel, spookstories vertel en
groot geskrik toe Mnr. Stevie hulle
uit ’n boom uit skrikgemaak het. Op
so ‘n kamp moet mens darem ietsie
leer ook, Deon het Saterdagoggend
hiervan seker gemaak. ‘n Paar baie
intellektuele speletjies is gespeel en
die breinkrag bietjie getoets. Dit is
nogal moeilik so vroeg in die oggend,
veral as mens maar min geslaap
het. Die kamp het ‘n op ho? noot
geëindig met ’n heerlike swem in die
Blyderivier. Baie dankie aan Barbara
Huddle van Blyde Adventure Camp
vir al haar moeite met die reelings.
