HOEDSPRUIT police made their second arrest last Tuesday on the case of two counts of armed robbery and rape that happened in The Willows recently. The suspect joined his accomplice who had already appeared in court last Monday for the double counts of rape and armed robbery. According to Hoedspruit police spokesperson Constable Livhuwani Mulaudzi the victims were attacked when they were escorting each other out of one victim’s rented room to the other one’s room in The Willows Village recently. ‘The two had just finished watching Muvhango soapie which ends late at night. ‘The suspect approached them and demanded R5000 from them when they told them they didn’t have money and only gave them R520. ‘The suspects demanded car keys of one of the victims and they drove with them to the nearest ATM where they withdrew undisclosed amount of cash,’ said Mulaudzi. The suspects then drove to the bridge nearby and they took turns raping the victim. The ordeal of the women then continued to Turkey Village where the rape continued. In the early hours of the morning the people where the victims are renting rooms from started to worry when they didn’t come home. They alerted other community members about their suspicions that the victims might be in danger as they drove with unknown suspects. The residents started a search and they spotted the car in Turkey. Both suspects tried to run but community members caught one suspect and they started to beat him before handing him over to the police. Through the community members tip off the police managed to arrest the second suspect. The suspects Colly Malepe and Cliffort Sekgobela appeared in Naphuno Magistrate Court for two counts of rape and armed robbery. They were both remanded into custody and the case postponed to December 1 for further investigations. 2 NEWS HOEDSPRUIT HERALD Friday November 28, 2014 Patrol officers make arrest A 25-year-old man who was arrested during police patrols appeared in Acornhoek Magistrate Court last Friday for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunitions. The patrols were led by Acornhoek police station Commander Colonel Benson Mphahlele and the community service centre (CSC) last Thursday. According to Acornhoek police spokesperson Lieutenant Mpho Nonyane the police spotted a suspicious vehicle and they stopped it when it reached where they were patrolling. ‘When the vehicle stop three passengers opened doors of the vehicle and ran away. The police gave chase but failed to catch them,’ said Nonyane. The police searched the vehicle and found two unlicensed guns and ammunitions and arrested the driver of the vehicle who was left behind by his friends. The suspect Trinity Ndlovu was given R2000 bail when he appeared in court. The case is postponed for further investigations. Safety tips for the festive season HOEDSPRUIT Town Watch share safety tips that will help the residents stay safe and keep their property safe from criminals this festive season. Pieter Papsdorf, Chairperson of the Hoedspruit Town Watch said residents must evaluate their own readiness as this is a very handy first step in the evaluation of readiness to make it as difficult as possible for any would-be criminal. ‘The biggest concern is that motorists still don’t double check to make sure that their vehicles are locked when shopping. Criminals use remote control devices to jam the locking system of remote locking systems in vehicles. Do not assume that your vehicle is locked when you pressed the lock. Make sure. All you have to do is to physical test whether the door is locked,’ said Papsdorf. He said that people must not leave their valuables visible in their vehicle. Papsdorf said that you can never hand over your own safety therefore make pretty sure that all doors and the gates are locked in your home at night. Make sure that your street number is visible at night, should an emergency arise so you can be helped quickly. Dogs are your first alarm please pay attention to their barking, but do not leave the house after dark. If you detect something suspicious you can contact the patrols, neighbours or friend for assistance. Keep personal belonging like purse, ID document, license, bank cards and keys in a specific place at night, should the need for evacuation arise in the dark like fire and storm. This handy “Safety Tips for Readiness at Home” is available and community members can call the Secretary at Marie Helm on 082 683 2835 and she can email the tips. You cannot delegate your own safety that is the basic principle of the “Safety Tips for Readiness at Home”. Count me in: The fight against abuse ACORNHOEK Vuwiselo Victim Empowerment Programme (VEP) kick start their 16 days of activism for no violence against women and children campaign under the theme “Count me in” in Acornhoek old shopping centre on Tuesday. In the morning the team were busy teaching the hawkers about their rights and encouraging them to report any abuse they may be subjected to or witness in their area. VEP Chairperson Class Maunye said that people must never get tired to spread the word about abuse and they must act on the word as well. ‘Teaching other people about abuse is not enough if you’re going to turn a blind eye on the abuse that you witness. We must act to end this violence against our children,’ said Maunye. Acornhoek police spokesperson Mpho Nonyane said that during the talks around the complex they have met people who promised that they will report abuse that they have already witnessed. This campaign will run from November 25 to December 10 to raise awareness of the negative impact that violence has on women and children. However the 16 Days has now being expanded into a yearlong, intensified programme that will ensure men and boys are part of the solution. In July VEP launched Orange day a call to the nation to unite to end violence against women and children. The initiative aims to raise awareness about the issues of violence against women and children, not only once a year, as it is presently, but will be celebrated 25 th of each month. Supporters are asked to wear Orange every 25 th of the month, share posts on social networks about the day and to use the photo of the unite ribbon, which is the symbol for ending violence against women and children. Do’s and don’ts for shopping this season Mike Kidson, writes: IT is the time of year when the shops are bound to be busier than usual as people prepare for the holidays. I urge shoppers to be cautious when they visit malls in the coming weeks and to keep their wits, and belongings, about them. “Try to carry as little as possible in your handbag or pockets and rather leave unnecessary bank or store cards and large amounts of cash at home. A packed clothing store or supermarket is the prime hunting-ground for a pick-pocket or bag-snatcher. And, never leave a handbag, purse or wallet in a trolley. If you don’t use a bag or do not take one along, keep your wallet or purse in the front pocket of your jacket or trousers.” Drawing money at an ATM also needs to be done with care. Kidson advises the following: • If you do need to draw money at an ATM, use a machine in a busy area • Be aware of anyone standing nearby and don’t accept help from strangers when entering your PIN number • Put your money in your purse or wallet before you walk away from the ATM, and • If you think someone has followed you from the machine, walk into the nearest shop or up to a mall security guard Your safety outside the mall is just as important as it is inside, he adds. “Before you exit the STAY SAFE: Mike mall, have your keys Kidson, Managing ready so that no Director of ADT time is wasted to get Northern Region, your purchases and urges shoppers to be yourself into your vigilant this fesƟve car. This also means season. that you’ll be able to hold onto your handbag as you walk. If someone does try to snatch your handbag, let it go. Do not resist or fight back,” he advises. Finally, if you are using public transport, Kidson suggests that you try to complete your shopping earlier rather than later. “It is a good idea to check the transport timetable ahead of your trip to the shops so that you don’t have to wait too long at a bus stop or train station. 3 Ek kuier net so lekker soos julle... 4 SCHOOL NEWS FUTURE PILOTS: Hoedspruit ChrisƟan School learners; ChrisƟan Benson, Robyn Lawson and Heath Keyser couldn’t stop smiling aŌer they received their first introductory flight lessons.
