Moholoholo mourns
death of cheetah cub
A CHEETAH cub was born at Moholoholo
Rehabilitation Centre with a throat valve defect
that caused a blockage in the cub's throat
when he was fed.
The cub was given 10ml of feed every hour
instead of the normal 40ml every 4 hours. Dr
Peter Rodgers suggested that the cub be taken
to the esteemed Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital. The procedure to correct the
defect is not a common one in the animal world
and was one of the first performed on a
cheetah.
At the age of 5 weeks the cub was submitted
into surgery on Wednesday, May 2. Everything
went well and the operation was recorded as
successful, however, Brian Jones was contacted
early Thursday morning to be informed of the
death of the cub. As any protective guardian
would, he started making phone calls to find
out what happened.
The hospital admitted to negligence on two
accounts. The after care unit where the cheetah
was supposed to stay for 24 hours before its
return to Moholoholo did not provide the after
care that was necessary for the young cub to
make it through the night.
This was a very sad time at the Moholoholo
Rehab centre as this was such an avoidable
mistake.

Thugs target shops
in local centres
A GANG of thugs have been targeting shops in
the Hoedspruit CBD over the past 2 weeks and
residents have been warned to be on the lookout for these crominals.
The gang suspectedly consists of 4 or 5
members and are apparently unarmed. Their
modus operandi is to enter a shop 2 at a time
and whjile one distratcs the staff, the other
grabs valaubles targeted beforehand.
Businesses in the Pick’nPay Centre and
Kamogelo Centre are amongst those that fell
victim to the gang.
Amongst the businesses that reported losses
are GPS, Ellerines, PME Building Supplies and
Wendy's Florists.
Handbags, cellular phones and cash have
been the main things grabbed by the thugs.
These people are very clever and sly.
Business owners and staff should be more
vigilant and not leave shops unattended or
your valuables unsupervised.
If a suspicious person enters your shop call
for help.
We all need to stand together to eliminate
this horrible tendency and bring the culprits to
book.
Redes vir dié ongeluk nog onduidelik Onthou dié belangrike datums in Mei
’n BAKKIE en ‘n motor was op 3 Mei omstreeks 20:30 in ‘n botsing betrokke. Dit het reg voor
die Hengelklub gebeur. Die rede vir die ongeluk is onduidelik, aangesien beide van die
voertuie aan die linkerkant getref is. Die bakkie het 'n bees agter op gehad. Die bees het tydens
die ongeluk onder die bakkie beland. Drie passasiers is met ligte beserings is per ambulans na
die hospitaal vervoer. Daar was geen passasiers in die motor nie. Die bestuurder is sowat 6
meter van die voertuig gekry en het ernstige beserings opgedoen.
Security guard killed
A SECURITY guard was found
dead at the shop he was guarding
at Turkey Zone 1 in Maruleng last
Wednesday morning.
It is alleged the deceased, Ntalaneng Tshetla was on duty
when three suspects, who
wanted to rob the shop, strangled
him to death before running
away.
Maake police spokesperson,
Constable Mpho Seroto said the
deceased was found dead with
his hands and legs tied up.
"The suspects tried to cut the
shop's steel door but they failed
to gain entrance," said Seroto.
Police investigations are continuing. Police are appealing to
anyone with information which
can lead to the arrest of the suspects to contact Maake police on
015 355 8357 of Maruleng Satellite on 015 307 6915.
Aloe conference a
boost for economy
AN INFLUX of visitors will be
expected in the Hoedspruit region during June when the International conference on Aloes
will be held at the Forever Resorts
Blyde Canyon.
The conference will take place
from June 19 to 21 and the organisers have put in place a preconference tour as well as a postconference tour for the visitors,
many of them from abroad. The
conference is organised by the
Inhlaba Indaba organising committee with the cooperation of the
Succulent Society of South Africa,
the South African National Biodiversity Institute and the Gariep
Plants succuklent nursery.
Speakers will include Len Newton, Tom McCoy, Gui-seppe Orlando, Gi-deon Smith, Ronell
Klopper, Ernst van Jaarsveld and a
number of others with plenty of
time for informal discussions also
included.
The area where the conference
is hosted, on the border between
Mpumalanga and Limpopo, hosts
one of the richest concentrations
of aloes in the world, not only in
the range of species found, but
also in sheer numbers of plants.

Waterprobleem

SOOS voorheen berig, is die water kwaliteit in
die Laer Blyderivier Besproeiingsstelsel erg
beïnvloed deur die Januarie 2012 vloede.
Die sliksluis kon nie in werking gestel word
nie, aangesien kontrakteurs van Departement
Waterwese besig was met onderhoudswerk op
die pyplyn en kleppe van die sliksluis.
Kontrakteurs het intussen die kleppe installeer en roesvoorkomi ng aan die pyplyn
voltooi.
Duikers van Waterwese het reeds op 15 Mei
die prop voor die inlaat verwyder waarna die
sliksluis hopelik oopgemaak kan word.
Die pyplynskema voorsien Hoedspruit plase
van besproeiings- en drinkwater.
Die Lugmagbasis het intussen ook pompstasie van Dept Openbare Werke in die Blyderivier laat herstel nadat dit ook deur die
vloede beskadig is.
Volgens Jakkie Smith, MBB bedryfsbestuurder van die pyplyn, het waterkwaliteit
al verbeter, maar hy is van mening dat die
spoeleffek van die sliksluis drastiese verbetering in die kwaliteit van rouwater sal
meebring.

EVERY last Sunday of the month, Southern
Cross School will host an organic food market;
it includes everything that was homemade or
brewed.
The market is not a fundraiser it's merely to
get the community together and support our
locals with their stalls.
Sunday after church was seen as the perfect

New project will benefit pupils
EACH staff member at HESC, Camp Jabulani
and the school was supplied with a packet of
seeds and instructions.
AS A result of the extensive eco-friendly
initiatives implemented at Camp Jabulani over
the past two years, the 5-star luxury safari
lodge in Hoedspruit, a proud member of the
Relais & Châteaux Association, has introduced a new eco-project which will assist the
community and the Paulos Ngobeni Primary
School to grow their own vegetable gardens
and facilitate a much needed soup kitchen.
This new project is also in conjunction with
the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre
(HESC), Camp Jabulani’s sister property.
Owner and founder, Lente Roode sought the
assistance of Dr Stone to provide training for
all involved, especially the teachers, to use the
provided guideline books in the classroom
that will hopefully change the attitude of
learners regarding the environment and in-
deed their own community.
The project educates Grade 5 learners to
grow their own vegetable gardens and produce vegetables in order to start a soup kitchen
at the school.
The learners visit HESC and are taken on an
in-depth tour followed by various activities
where they participate with the students from
the Cheetah Conservation Programme.
The children learn how to nurture the earth,
grow their own vegetables, discover more
about nutrition and gain hands on experience
in the process.
Comments Managing Director Adine
Roode: “Each staff member at HESC, Camp
Jabulani and the school was supplied with a
packet of seeds and instructions.
With the knowledge they gained, they are
then able to implement and grow their own
vegetable gardens.
Wildlife plays a role in this too; Camp
Jabulani will supply ‘worm wee’ from our inhouse wormery, to the school and staff in order
to fertilise the soil.”
Aside from this, Camp Jabulani also has art
classes which are part of its Community Art
Gallery at HESC.
The aim is for the children to learn skills and
about art as a means of self-expression and the
different artistic mediums.
The next art class will be held during the
winter holidays. These initiatives form part of
Camp Jabulani and the Centre’s extensive ecofriendly programmes held throughout the
year.

Small start, now
feeds many people
WHEN the Chiloane sisters started growing vegetables in
their backyards four years ago, no one ever thought by then
that one day they would be responsible for feeding the
nation.
Losta and Retshepile of Buffelshoek village started the
vegetable garden to feed their family but through sheer
determination and hard work they now sell their produce
mostly tomatoes and peppers to the local and national
markets.
The sisters say after the demand for their vegetables
increased in the community, they leased a 15 hectares farm
from the Moletele Communal Property Association in
Hoedspruit area under the name Tsugamoletele.
After relocating to the new farm, the two never looked
back despite all odds and in the process they managed to
create jobs for five people.
"As poverty is a stark reality in our communities, our
policy also is to help the needy in and around our village by
donating fresh produce to them so that they have
something to eat," says Losta.
Despite being relatively new in the agricultural industry,
the two came second in the 2011 Provincial Female
Agricultural Entrepreneur of the Year competition organised by the Department of Agriculture.
"Obtaining the second position in the provincial competition was a great honour which motivated as to work
even harder," says Losta.
About their aspirations and future plans the sisters say
when they started they never visualise themselves any
further than where they were. But through willingness to
learn and cooperating with other stakeholders their enterprise is growing from strength to strength.
They would like to expand further in order to create more
jobs, thus reducing the level of poverty in their community.
"With the constant rigorous training programs from the
Department of Agriculture, our plans in fighting poverty
will indeed be successful" says Losta.
"As training service providers, we believe in the frequency and relevancy of intervention. Hence we are
always available to support this vulnerable section of our
society to improve their skills. We stand by the saying that
by training a woman, you train a nation and indeed, in this
instance one is also making a contribution towards feeding
the nation," concurs Tryphosa Malatji, the
Department of Agriculture official in the area.

resep nie net vir enige biefwors is nie - dit moet
'n tradisionele boerewors wees.
Die gesaghebbende Suid-Afrikaanse Sjefsvereniging (SACA) sal verantwoordelikheid
neem vir alle beoordelingsprosesse en seker
maak dat deelnemers hiérdie voorgeskrewe
riglyne volg.
Om tradisioneel te wees moet die boerewors
ten minste 90 persent vleis bevat - altyd
beesvleis, sowel as lam- of varkvleis, of 'n
kombinasie van lam- en varkvleis.
Die vleismengsel mag hoogstens 30 persent
vet bevat. Verder is dit 'n kenmerkende kombinasie van speserye soos koljander, naeltjies,
neutmuskaat en swartpeper, asook asyn, water
en Worcestershiresous wat boerewors onderskei van ander tipe wors en is dit juis dié
mengsel wat egte boerewors daardie watertand-geur gee.
Indien jy wil kwalifiseer vir Shoprite en
Checkers se kompetisie moet jy seker maak dat
jou resep aan die bogenoemde riglyne voldoen.
Deelnemers moet 'n lang pad stap om
uiteindelik by die 2012 Championship Boerewors Grand Finale uit te kom.
Eers moet hulle sake uitspook in streekrondes wat landwyd op Saterdae 11, 18 en 25
Augustus plaasvind, en slegs die wat in hiérdie
strawwe uitdunne seëvier sal aangaan om teen
hul provinsiale eweknieë die stryd verder te
voer op Saterdag, 15 September.
Tien boerewors-strydvegters sal as die top
finaliste uit die provinsiale rondes tree en
mekaar aanvat in die finale geveg om die titel
Bederf haar met ontbyt
Piesang-en-pekanneutplaatkoekies
2 eiers
500 ml karringmelk
90 ml gesmelte botter
375 ml koekmeel
60 ml strooisuiker
5 ml bakpoeier
5 ml koeksoda
2 ml sout
250 ml gesnipperde piesang
125 ml pekanneute, fyn gekap
Botter en olie vir braai
Klits die eiers en karringmelk saam. Roer die
botter by. In 'n aparte bak: Meng die meel,
suiker, bakpoeier, koeksoda en sout saam.
Voeg by die karringmelkmengsel en klits tot
net gemeng. Roer die piesang en neute by.
Verhit 'n klein stukkie botter en 'n paar
druppels olie in 'n pan en braai groot lepelsvol van die beslag tot daar borrels boop vorm.
Draai om, en braai aan die anderkant tot
deurgaar. Herhaal met die res van die beslag.
Sit warm voor met heuning of stroop, spekvleis en koffie. Lewer 12 groot plaatkoekies.

Moedersdag word oral gevier
SES en veertig lande vier Moedersdag.
'n Dag waarop miljoene mense ietsie spesiaals doen om
dankie te sê vir hul moeders vir al die opofferings wat hul
gemaak het en alles wat hul vir ons doen. Dis die dag
waarin almal kan deel.
Moedersdag het jare gelede begin en is een van die mees
bekende herdenkings. Daar is geglo dat die dag begin het
met die antieke Lentefees, waar Rhea, die vrou van Cronus
en moeder van gode en godinne, vereer is. Dit het later ook
bekend geword as "Mothering Sunday" in Engeland.
In ander lande het die viering getransformeer na 'n
herdenking aan die Moeder van Christus, die moeder
gemeente as plaasvervanger van die godinne.
Die eerste Moedersdag, soos ons dit vandag ken, is gevier
in 1908 te ere van Anna Reese. Die viering het geblom met
angeliere haar gunsteling en die angelier het later 'n
simbool geword. Rooi angeliere vir lewende moeders, die
soetheid, reinheid en deursettings vermoë van moederlike
liefde weerspieël terwyl die die wit angelier simboliseer dat
die ma reeds gesterf het.
Steeds in vandag se tyd word die Moeders vereer deur
geliefdes . Onthou om jou ma te bederf die Moeders dag en
vir haar te sê hoe lief jy haar het.

blueberry muffin recipe.
Use fresh or frozen blueberries to make
these blueberry muffins. More blueberry
muffin recipes below.
Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup sugar 1 cup buttermilk
2 eggs, beaten
1/2 cup melted butter or margarine
1 1/2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries,
rinsed
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
Sugar for topping
Preparation:
Sift flour, baking powder, salt, and 1/2 cup
sugar. Add buttermilk, beaten eggs, and
melted butter; mix until dry ingredients are just
moistened. Mix berries with 2 tablespoons of
flour; fold berries into batter. Spoon batter into
greased muffin pans, filling each muffin cup
about 2/3 full. Sprinkle each with a little sugar.
Bake at 400
Makes 18 to 24 muffins.

Southern Cross gymnasts excel at National competition
TWO Southern Cross students, Nicola Cowden (Grade 6)
and Trystan Arthur (Grade 7), competed in their first Level 2
Rhythmic Gymnastics competition in Polokwane on April
19.
They qualified for the Club Nationals that took place in
Johannesburg on May 5.
At the Nationals, both Trystan and Nicola did particularly
well. Nicola scored 12.05 for her hoop routine and 11.85
for her ball routine. Trystan scored 11.55 for her hoop
routine and 12.10 for her ball routine.
Both gymnasts received a gold medal for their overall
results.
Their Zani's Gymnastics Club Team, comprising of 3
gymnasts, came first for their age group and Nicola scored
the highest total score for the over 11 years of age
category.
Well done to both Nicola and Trystan. We wish these girls
all the best as they prepare for the Provincial Trials taking
place in Polokwane on May 25.
Drakensig se kultuurvlooi ryg toekennings in
ANIN Myburgh, 'n Graad 6 leerder van Laerskool Drakensig het aan
beide die Afrikaanse en Engelse Eistedfodd deelgeneem. Sy het
altesame 12 toekennings ontvang. Waarvan 4 diamante was, 5 dubbel
goud en 3 goud. Laerskool Drakensig is ongelooflik trots op Anin, dis
voorwaar 'n asemrowende prestasie!
Drakies het groot pret by die Eiland
Drakensig se senior spreekkoor het diamante ontvang tydens die
Eisteddfod.
DRAKIE se klein botteltjies is groot dinamiet! Laerskool Tzaneen het op 5 Mei in samewerking met die ATKV 'n mini
netbal en Bulletjie rugbydag aangebied by die Eiland. 'n Magdom skole is uitgenooi om aan die feestelikhede deel te
neem. Die kleingoed het gespeel, geeet, geswem en weer hulle harte uitgespeel! Hulle ouers was bankvas langs die veld
om te bemoedig en aan te moedig. Dit was 'n heerlike gesinsdag wat die jong spelertjies die geleentheid gegee het om
hulle talente te ontwikkel. Alhoewel daar nie klem gelê is op wen of verloor nie het die Drakensig se spannetjies
uitgeblink en uitstekend gevaar. Daar word nie verniet gepraat van "klein bondeltjies- groot dinamiet" nie.
Laerskool Drakensig wil van die geleentheid gebruik maak om vir Tzaneen Laerskool geluk te wens met 'n suksesvolle
dag wat getuig het van goeie organisasie. Sien mekaar volgende jaar weer!

van Laerskool Mariepskop, het 'n besondere
prestasie behaal deur gekies te word vir die
Mopani Netbalspan. Dit is bekend dat jy
werklik talentvol moet wees om hierdie
prestasie te behaal. Inge is nie slegs talentvol
nie, maar het baie hard gewerk. Baie geluk,

Mhlongo wat deurgaan na die 3de ronte

Southern Cross bid
students farewell
AFTER two action packed weeks in South
Africa the two Dutch exchange students, who
were hosted by Southern Cross Schools, are
returning home.
The two young men, Klaas-Jan van der Vlist
and Wouter Slits, managed to do in fourteen
days what many Hoedspruiters only dream of
doing in a year.
In addition to visiting many of the tourist
sites in the area they enjoyed experiences
such as:
Walking with cheetah on Tshukudu; seeing
a pack of wild dogs at Tanda Tula killing and
devouring an impala; camping in the Kruger
National Park; visiting a traditional Shangaan
cultural village; fishing for barbel and tilapia
in the school dam; spotting leopard on the
Timbavati road; mountain biking on Raptor's
View; seeing endangered species at Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre; walking in the
Blyde River Canyon; attending classes at
Southern Cross; experiencing South African
family life and more.
Klaas-Jan and Wouter will return to their
school, Lyceum De Oude Hoven, to share
their South African adventure.
They will deliver a letter to their principal
from the Headmaster of Southern Cross
Schools sending greetings from South Africa
and expressing the wish that the exchange
program will flourish in the future.
The two hosts from Southern Cross Schools,
Christopher Kleynhans and Benjamin Davies
will be embarking on a return exchange to the
Netherlands in September this year.
They will then experience what life is like
for a 16 year old learner at Lyceum De Oude
Hoven.

SC equestrians rides excel
THIS past weekend seven Southern
Cross Equestrian Riders competed at
the second SANESA qualifier at Broadlands in Polokwane.
The team consisted of 2 Prep School
riders, Erin Vogler (Grade 5) and Rebecca Behne (Grade 6).
This was Rebecca's first show and
she did extremely well competing in
two jumping classes for which she was
awarded two 1st place rosettes.
Erin achieved a 2nd and a 3rd in the
same events. On Sunday Erin
achieved two second places for two
dressage classes.
The College was represented by
Sasha Mittermayer (Grade 8), RobertLouw Booysen (Grade 9), Emma
Gibbs (Grade 8), Zoe Moolman
(Grade 8) and Rebecca Moolman
(Grade 10).
Their results were as follows:
Sasha Mittermayer achieved two
first places, one for Show Jumping and
one for Working Hunter.
Robert-Louw Booysen achieved first
place for Prix Caprelli and fourth place
for dressage.
Emma Gibbs achieved three second
places, two for show jumping and one
for equitation.
Zoe Moolman achieved first place
for equitation, a second for jumping,
and a second and third for dressage.
It must be said that although Rebecca Moolman never picked up any
rosettes, she was riding a new horse
that she only had for just over a week.
However, in saying this, they picked
up a respectable 63% for their
dressage test.
Watch this space for their future
results as this combination looks set to
be in the placings soon.
Thanks go to all the parents (grooms
more likely) for their efforts in getting
their children ready and on time for
their events.
It certainly makes the equestrian
coordinator's job an easy one.
Congratulations to all the riders on
an outstanding set of results.

Riepie Bulletjies nou bulle met nuwe sakke
RIEPIE BULLETJIES spog nou met
splinternuwe sportsakke.
Dit is mos 'n algemene probleem
dat (veral) seuns dikwels sonder 'n
hemp, broek of skoene van 'n sportbyeenkoms af tuis kom.
Hoe dit gebeur, bly een van daardie
dinge wat seker nooit verklaar sal
word nie.
Daarom het Johan Botha besluit
om, eerder as na die oorsaak te soek
(dalk onthou hy sy eie kinderjare…),
die probleem hok te slaan. Elke Bul-
letjie het sy eie sportsak, met sy naam
daarop geborduur ontvang.
En elkeen - selfs die Graad R'e wat
nog nie amptelik lees nie - ken sy
naam en het hand op die hart belowe
om hulle besittings van nou af veilig te
bewaar.
Tydens die eerste wedstryde van die
seisoen wat op Lydenburg plaasgevind het, het die manne hulle
woord gestand gedoen, maar ook
sommer nog gewys hoe dankbaar
hulle is toe hulle met oorgawe elke
wedstryd aangepak het.
Die weer het goed saamgespeel en
skole van Lydenburg, Ohrigstad,
Witrivier, Barberton, Clivia, Nelspruit,
Steelpoort het saamgetrek om die jongetjies kans te gee om die grondslag
van rugby te ervaar.
Die meer ervare Bulletjies het mooi
saamgespeel en die drieë het gespat
terwyl dié vir wie dit 'n eerste ervaring was, hulle harte uitgespeel
het.

HOEDSPRUIT Tigers karateklub het die afgelope naweek deelgeneem aan die jaar se SA
Kampioenskap te Standard Bank arena Johannesburg.
Hierdie kompetisie groei elke jaar en raak
strawwer.

karatekas wat deelgeneem het en Hoedspruit
se naam hoog gehou het.’
