Plzeň založil král Václav II. v roce 1295 na soutoku čtyř řek:
Radbuzy, Mže, Úhlavy a Úslavy. Dnešní Plzeň má rozlohu
téměř 140 km2 a žije zde více než 167 tisíc lidí. Je sídlem
biskupství a univerzity. Na staré řemeslné a obchodní
tradice navazuje bezpočet podniků, jimž vévodí Škodovka
a Plzeňský Prazdroj. Ve sportovním světě šíří slávu města
FC Viktoria a HC Škoda. A milovníci kultury míří do Plzně
za bohatým spektrem festivalů, do muzeí, klubů, do divadel,
kin, galerií i za množstvím open-air akcí. Díky tomu všemu je
Plzeň v roce 2015 Evropským hlavním městem kultury.

my name is Pilsen!
Pilsen was founded by the King Wenceslas II in 1295 at the
confluence of four rivers: Radbuza, Mže, Úhlava and Úslava.
Today’s Pilsen spans the area of almost 140 square kilometres
and it has over 167,000 inhabitants. It is home to the bishopric
and the university. Old craft and mercantile traditions are built
upon by a number of businesses, mainly Škoda and Pilsner
Urquell. In the sporting world, the fame of Pilsen is spread
wide by FC Viktoria and HC Škoda. The lovers of culture arrive
in Pilsen to attend various festivals, clubs, theatres, cinemas,
galleries or a number of open-air events. Thanks to this, Pilsen
is the European Capital of Culture in 2015.

ich bin Pilsen!
Pilsen wurde im Jahr 1295 von dem böhmischen König Václav II.
am Zusammenfluss von vier Flüssen – Radbusa, Mies, Úhlava und
Úslava – gegründet. Das heutige Pilsen nimmt eine Fläche von
nahezu 140 km2 ein und hat mehr als 167 Tausend Einwohner. Die
Stadt ist Bischofssitz und verfügt über eine Universität. Zahlreiche
der heute in Pilsen ansässigen Unternehmen – allen voran die
Škoda-Werke und die Pilsner-Urquell-Brauerei – knüpfen an alte
Handwerks- und Handelstraditionen an. In der Sportwelt kann
sich Pilsen mit Mannschaften wie FC Viktoria und HC Škoda
rühmen. Kulturliebhaber lockt das breite Spektrum an Festivals,
Museen, Clubs, Theatern und Galerien wie auch die Vielzahl an
Open-Air-Veranstaltungen. Aufgrund dieses vielfältigen Angebots
ist Pilsen 2015 Kulturhauptstadt Europas.

Bývalé depo dopravních podniků v Presslově ulici dostalo v roce 2015 nový
důvod své existence. A právě s okamžikem nového startu, vzniku kreativní zóny
DEPO2015, rezonuje dílo Čestmíra Sušky s příznačným názvem RESTART (foto
2). Světově uznávaný sochař se v posledních letech věnuje tvorbě neobyčejných
soch z vyřazených kovových objektů.
Nastupte do stroje času, který vás teleportuje do historie dávné i nedávné.
Naprogramován je na cesty do pravěku,
za Kelty, do antického Říma, středověku,
renesance i do 19. a 20. století. Létat
časem můžete libovolně, tam a zpátky
a to prostřednictvím interaktivní výstavy
pro děti na motivy knihy Historie Evropy
ilustrátorky Renáty Fučíkové.

Výstava (foto 1, 3) představuje zážitkovou krajinu, jejímž prostřednictvím významní evropští designéři reagují na témata odkazující na historii i současný
život Plzně. Interaktivní instalaci v industriální krajině někdejších dílen dopravního depa vytvořili Werner Aisslinger, Jiří
Příhoda, Dechem, Jan Plecháč a Henry
Wielgus, Maxim Velčovský a desítka dalších designérů z celého světa.

Exhibitions with the industrial genius loci
Pilsen as the 2015 European Capital of Culture has just come
through a successful half-year of its term with hundreds of events
which met with a high demand of visitors, tourists and foreign media.
The cultural life in Pilsen, however, does not close and there are
varied and interesting events to be held in the last quarter too.

The former depot of Pilsen’s transport
company in Presslova street was given, in
2015, a new reason for its existence. And
it is with the moment of the new start, the
launch of the DEPO2015 creative zone, that
Čestmír Šuška’s work RESTART (photo 2)
well resonates. The world-renowned sculptor
has recently focused on making sculptures
of discarded metal objects.
The Time Machine

Enter the time-machine which will teleport
you to history both distant and recent.
It has been programmed for journeys
to prehistory, the Celtic times, the Ancient Rome, Middle Ages, Renaissance
and 19 th and 20 th centuries. You can
fly freely to and through, with the help
of an interactive exhibition for children
inspired by the book History of Europe
by the graphic artist Renáta Fučíková.

Jan Plecháč a Henry Wielgus, Maxim
Velčovský and a dozen of other designers
from all over the world.

ehemaliges Depot der Pilsner Verkehrsbetriebe hat 2015 eine neue Bestimmung
erhalten. Mit diesem Moment des Neustarts
– der Entstehung des Kreativgeländes
DEPO2015 – korrespondiert das Werk
Čestmír Suškas, das den bezeichnenden
Titel „RESTART“ (Foto 2) trägt. Der
weltweit geschätzte Bildhauer befasst
sich in den letzten Jahren mit der Kreation ungewöhnlicher Skulpturen aus
ausrangierten Metallobjekten.

Pilsen kann als Europäische Kulturhauptstadt 2015 bereits auf
ein erfolgreiches halbes Jahr zurückblicken – mit Hunderten
Veranstaltungen und großem Interesse bei Besuchern, Touristen und
ausländischen Medien. Damit ist das diesjährige Pilsner Kulturleben
jedoch bei Weitem nicht erschöpft. Auch das letzte Quartal verspricht
ein interessantes und vielseitiges Veranstaltungsprogramm.

a Wroclawi. Pro barytonové sólo se
podařilo získat sólistu Národního divadla v Praze a Brně Romana Janála.

Five Pilsen composers were inspired by
the rivers of the city and composed five
symphonic poems to be performed by
the orchestra of music school students
from five European Capitals of Culture:
Pilsen, Košice, Riga, Mons and Wroclaw.
The barytone solo will be performed by
the soloist of the National Theatre in
Prague and Brno, Roman Janál.

Fünf Pilsner Komponisten haben sich von
den Pilsner Flüssen zu fünf sinfonischen
Gedichten inspirieren lassen. Aufgeführt
werden diese von einem Orchester mit
Musikschulstudenten aus fünf europäischen
Kulturstädten: Pilsen, Košice, Riga, Mons
und Wrocław. Für das Baritonsolo konnte
der Solist des Nationaltheaters Prag und
Brünn Roman Janál gewonnen werden.

Learn the secret of making the beer legend
Every country has its symbols and legends. The Czech ones include
Pilsner Urquell, a lager from Pilsen whose history had its beginning
in 1842 here in Pilsen. Since then it has inspired over two-thirds of
pils beers in the world. Meet the legend
of Pilsner Urquell
When in Pilsen, you simply cannot miss
a trip to the Pilsen Urquell brewery that
will take you to the very places where the
original Pilsner Urquell has been brewed
since 1842. You will see an exposition of
ingredients, both historical and present
brewhouse and the state-of-the-art bottling line. Then there are the legendary
brewery cellars where those over 18 years
of age can taste the unique non-filtered
Pilsner Urquell beer drawn directly from
oak lager barrels. That the excursion is
appreciated by the visitors is proved by
the prestigious Certificate of Excellence,
awarded to Pilsner Urquell tour for the
house and the excursion presents the
production, serving and drinking of beer

brauberechtigten Haus aus dem 15. Jahrhundert und erzählt in fesselnder Weise

jeho čtyřhodinový opus s tematikou polského vlastenectví (A)pollonia. Německé divadlo bude zastupovat berlínská
Schaubühne s Ibsenovým Nepřítelem
lidu v režii Thomase Ostermeiera. Publikum se dočká i divadelní tvorby, s níž se
nemá příležitost běžně setkat: z Islandu
do Plzně přijede inscenace Brim. Slovenské divadelnictví bude reprezentovat

Bilanční přehlídka loutkového a alternativního divadla Skupova Plzeň (foto 1) se
standardně koná každý sudý rok v červnu. Letos přichází v souvislosti s Evropským hlavním městem kultury její mimo-
řádná nabídka, a to v září. Do Plzně svede
marionety, maňásky, manekýny, obří mechanické loutky, javajky nebo třeba loutky trikové či filmové. Zahájí ji účinkování
obřích loutek v centru města. V ulicích se
bude také odehrávat většina víkendového programu. Malí i velcí diváci se mohou
těšit na představení nejen českých souborů, ale i divadel z Argentiny, Japonska,
Izraele, Austrálie nebo Finska. Skupova

Theatre autumn brings the festivals
THEATRE and Skupa’s Pilsen
The autumn of 2015 will be characterised by major theatre feasts.
Besides the traditional international festival THEATRE, there will be
the festival of marionette and alternative threatre Skupa’s Pilsen and
on the third Saturday in November, the city will be hosting the third
edition of the Night of the Theatres.
The international theatre festival (photo 2)
has belonged to Pilsen’s cultural September offer for over twenty years. In 2015, it
will present, for the first time ever in the
Czech Republic, the work of the excellent
Polish director Krzysztof Warlikowsky. The
spectators will be given an opportunity to
watch his four-hour-long oeuvre on the
topic of Polish patriotism, (A)pollonia.
German theatre will be represented by the
Berlin-based Schaubühne with Ibsen’s The
Enemy of the People, directed by Thomas
Ostermeier. The audience will be treated
with theatre performances that they cannot normally see: the Brim performance
will come to Pilsen from Iceland. Slovak
theatre will be represented by Master and
Margerita, performed in a circus tent. The
international festival THEATRE runs from
September 9 to 17, 2015.

The annual festival of marionette and alternative theatre, Skupa’s Pilsen (photo 1),

June. This year, there is an exceptional
edition of the event, held in September, at
the occasion of the European Capital of
Culture. It brings into Pilsen marionettes,
hand puppets, mannequins, huge mechanical puppets or film or trick puppets. It will
be launched by a performance of huge
puppets in the city centre and most of
the weekend programme, too, will take
part in the streets. Spectators small and
adult can look forward to performances
The third Saturday in November will
belong to theatre for the third time. Not
just to theatre as a performance but to
theatre as buildings. Theatres in Pilsen
will open their doors at the Night of the
Theatres – this will be done at times usual
for visitors, but the experience provided
will be quite unusual. Visitors will have
the opportunity to access places that are
normally not accessible and they will be
treated with a lot of unusual experience.

Der Herbst lockt mit den Festivals
„DIVADLO“ und „Skupova Plzeň“
Der Herbst 2015 steht im Zeichen großer Theaterfeste. Neben dem
jährlich stattfindenden internationalen Theaterfestival „DIVADLO“
steht in diesem Jahr auch das Puppen- und Alternativtheaterfestival
„Skupova Plzeň“ auf dem Programm. Am dritten Samstag im November
öffnet zudem der dritte Jahrgang der Theaternacht seine Pforten.
Das im September stattfindende internationale Theaterfestival „DIVADLO“ (Foto 2)
gehört schon seit mehr als zwanzig Jahren
zum regulären Kulturangebot Pilsens.
2015 wird hier – zum ersten Mal in der
gesamten Tschechischen Republik – eine
Arbeit des herausragenden polnischen
Regisseurs Krzysztof Warlikowski gezeigt.
Die vierstündige Inszenierung mit dem
Titel „(A)pollonia“ befasst sich mit dem
polnischen Patriotismus. Die deutsche
Theaterlandschaft ist mit einer Inszenierung
der Berliner Schaubühne, Ibsens „Volksfeind“ in der Regie Thomas Ostermeiers,
vertreten. Darüber hinaus erwarten das
Publikum Theatererlebnisse, wie man sie
sonst nur selten zu sehen bekommt, so

z. B. die isländische Inszenierung „Brim“.
Das slowakische Theater stellt sich mit
dem in einem Zirkuszelt aufgeführten
Stück „Der Meister und Margarita“ vor.

Riesenpuppen im Stadtzentrum. Auch
ein Großteil des Wochenendprogramms
wird sich auf der Straße abspielen. Kleine
wie große Zuschauer können sich dabei
nicht nur auf Vorstellungen tschechischer
Ensembles, sondern auch auf Inszenierungen aus Argentinien, Japan, Israel,
Australien oder Finnland freuen. Das

Auch der dritte Samstag im November

Festival Jazz bez hranic přiváží
The Count Basie Orchestra a další hvězdy
Nálada podzimních měsíců si přímo říká o jazz. Organizátoři
festivalu Jazz bez hranic (foto 1) si toho jsou dobře vědomi,
a tak již deset let zvou v říjnu a listopadu na jazzové hody. Ty
letošní odstartují 6. října a potrvají do 20. listopadu.

Hlavní hvězdou Jazzu bez hranic 2015 bude slavný The
Count Basie Orchestra. Pod vedením dvojnásobného držitele
cen Grammy, trumpetisty Scottyho Barnharta, vystoupí 9. listopadu ve Velkém divadle. Zpívat bude vynikající americká
zpěvačka Carmen Bradford (foto 2).
Legendární big band píše dějiny swingu už od třicátých let
dvacátého století. Vyhrál 18 cen Grammy, vystoupil na největších festivalech a hudebních síních po celém světě, hrál pro
krále, královny, zazářil v mnoha TV show a filmech. Orchestrem prošli ti nejlepší světoví muzikanti, jako byli Billie Holiday,
Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Foster, Joe Williams či
Dennis Rowland. V Plzni s tímto orchestrem za zády vystoupí
světoznámá zpěvačka Carmen Bradford, kterou ještě v roce
1983 angažoval Count Basie osobně.

This year the festival will start on October

The famous Count Basie Orchestra will
be the main star of the 2015 Jazz without
Frontiers. Led by the double Grammy winner, the trumpeter Scotty Barnhart, the
band will perform on November 9 in the
Big Theatre with the excellent American

The legendary big band has written the
history of swing since the 1930s. It has
won 18 Grammy awards, performed on
major festivals and in the most famous
halls across the world, it has performed
for kings, queens, starred in many TV
shows and films. The orchestra has bred
the best world musicians such as Billie
Holiday, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald,
Frank Foster, Joe Williams or Dennis
Rowland. Carmen Bradford, hired in 1983
by Count Basie in person, will perform in
Pilsen with this orchestra.
Bob Mintzer Quintet
Jazz without Frontiers builds its reputation on bringing, every year, excellent
Grammy-awarded world jazzmen in
the Czech Republic. The saxophone
legend Bob Mintzer will be another star
of this calibre. He will perform for the
Pilsen audience on October 20 with his
American-Slovak quartet. The excellent
Trio Elf from Germany will perform on
the same night.
Jazz Beatles
In order for the festival to live up to its name
and show that jazz is indeed without any
frontiers, the organisers bring every year
remarkable projects that are varied both
in the nationality of the performers and
music styles. This year, a special treat is
scheduled on October 15 when Milan
Svoboda will perform with Les Sirènes
String Quartet (photo 3). In their Hommage aux Beatles show they will perform
Svoboda’s adaptations of songs such
as When I’m Sixty Four, And I Love Her,

Ohlédněte se za kresbou, republikou i 19. stoletím
Bienále se ohlédne
Bienále kresby Plzeň (foto 3) připravilo retrospektivní výstavu, která se
ohlédne za tvorbou všech laureátů
minulých ročníků. Bilanční přehlídka
kresby píše, nebo spíše kreslí, svou
historii od roku 1996 každý sudý rok.
V roce 2015 se tedy standardně nekoná, ale v souvislosti s Evropským
hlavním městem kultury připravila tuto
mimořádnou výstavu. V Galerii města
Plzně, Galerii Jiřího Trnky a v Západočeském muzeu se bude prezentovat sedm desítek výtvarníků z Evropy, Austrálie, Japonska, Tchai-wanu
a Indonésie. Do Plzně připutovaly
jejich kresby, malby, grafiky, objekty,
instalace a další formy současného
výtvarného umění. Výstavy potrvají
od 15. října do 29. listopadu 2015.

Osmadvacátého října slaví i Plzeň
konec rakousko-uherské monarchie

2015 se oslavy uskuteční už podesáté a opět oživí centrum města a dvacet
památek a atraktivních turistických cílů.
V tento den se všude platí jen symbolické vstupné 28 korun, nebo je vstup
zcela zdarma. Celodenní program bude
probíhat například v muzeích, galeriích,
historickém podzemí, pivovaru nebo
zoologické zahradě. Jeho tradičním
vyvrcholením pak bude slavnostní shromáždění na náměstí T. G. Masaryka
a následující průvod světel zakončený
ohňostrojem na náměstí Republiky.

The Biennial of Drawing Pilsen (photo 3)
has come up with a retrospective that will
look back on the work of the winners of
previous edition. The Biennial has been
writing, or rather drawing, its history
since 1996 every second year. In 2015
there should be no standard edition of
the event, but an exceptional one has
been organised as a part of the European
Capital of Culture. Nearly seven dozens
of artists from Europe, Australia, Japan,
Taiwan and Indonesia will present their
works in the Gallery of the City of Pilsen,
On October 28, Pilsen celebrates the
end of Austro-Hungarian Empire and
the foundation of the independent
of republic (photo 1, 2). In 2015 the
celebrations will see its tenth edition and
will, once again, enliven the centre of city
and twenty sights and tourist attractions.
On this day, the symbolic fee of CZK 28
applies, or in some case the entry is free
of charge. The whole-day programme
will run in museums, galleries, historical
underground, the brewery or the zoo. It
will traditionally culminate by a gathering

Biennale im Rückblick
Glückwunsch an die Republik
Die Pilsner Grafik-Biennale (Foto 3)
lädt zu einer retrospektiven Ausstellung
mit Werken sämtlicher Preisträger der
vergangenen Jahre ein. Der renommierte
Grafikwettbewerb findet seit 1996 jedes
zweite – gerade – Jahr statt und stünde
daher 2015 eigentlich nicht auf dem
Programm. Da Pilsen in diesem Jahr
Europäische Kulturhauptstadt ist, wird
jedoch mit dieser Sonderausstellung eine
Ausnahme gemacht. In der Galerie der
Stadt Pilsen, der Jiří-Trnka-Galerie und
dem Westböhmischen Museum werden
Arbeiten von mehr als siebzig bildenden
Künstlern aus Europa, Australien, Japan,
Taiwan und Indonesien gezeigt, die ihre
Grafiken, Malereien, Objekte, Installationen
wie auch Arbeiten in anderen Formen der
Gegenwartskunst nach Pilsen geschickt
haben. Die Ausstellungen sind vom
15. Oktober bis 29. November 2015
zu sehen.
Wie überall in Tschechien wird auch in Pilsen
am achtundzwanzigsten Oktober an
das Ende der österreichisch-ungarischen
Monarchie und die Gründung der Ersten
Tschechoslowakischen Republik (Foto
1, 2) (1918) erinnert. Die Feierlichkeiten,
die in diesem Jahr bereits zum zehnten
Mal stattfinden, werden das Stadtzentrum
sowie zwanzig Denkmäler und Touristenattraktionen beleben. An diesem Tag gilt
überall nur ein symbolischer Eintrittspreis
von 28 Tschechischen Kronen oder der
Eintritt ist gänzlich frei. An dem ganztägigen
Festprogramm beteiligen sich u. a. etliche
Museen und Galerien der Stadt, die Pilsner
historischen Keller, die Pilsner-UrquellBrauerei und der Zoologische Garten.
Traditioneller Höhepunkt ist ein feierliches
Meeting auf dem (nach dem Republikgründer
benannten) T.-G.-Masaryk-Platz, an den
sich ein Lichterzug und zum Ausklang ein
Feuerwerk auf dem Platz der Republik

Smetana’s early spring
In March 2016 Pilsen will see the 36th
edition of the Smetana Days (photo 4).
The multi-genre festival traditionally combines music of various genres, but also
exhibitions, theatre, film and a scholarly
symposium focused on the issue of the
nineteenth century. The event is organised
by the Pilsen Philharmonics who use it to
give opportunity to the youngest generation of musicians: at the joint concert they
are accompanied by the laureates of the
Pilsen Orpheus and Pilsen Orpheus Junior
awards. The Smetana Days will run
from March 2 to 24, 2016.

Im März 2016 findet in Pilsen der bereits
36. Jahrgang der Smetana-Tage (Foto 4)
statt. Das Multigenre-Festival wird – wie
jedes Jahr – Musik verschiedener Genres,
aber auch Ausstellungen, Theater, Film und
ein auf das 19. Jahrhundert ausgerichtetes
Fachsymposium umfassen. Organisator ist
die Pilsner Philharmonie, die im Rahmen
des Festivalprogramms auch der jüngsten
Musikergeneration Gelegenheit zu einem
Auftritt gibt: Bei einem gemeinsamen
Konzert mit der Philharmonie werden
Preisträger der Wettbewerbe „Pilsner
Orpheus“ und „Pilsner Orpheus Junior“ zu
hören sein. Die Smetana-Tage finden
vom 2. bis 24. März 2016 statt.

Rozjímejte, zpívejte, nakupujte nebo se projděte
s průvody zimním městem
Jen málo starých tradic a atmosféry přežilo do 21. století tak, jako ty z přelomu
roku. I Plzeň žije adventem, Vánocemi, svátkem Tří králů a masopustem.
V roce 2015 začíná advent 29. listopadu. Už o dva dny
dříve rozkvete zimní náměstí pestrými barvami vánočního zboží
ve stáncích Vánočního trhu. Zde lidé najdou lidové tradice a řemesla, voňavé perníčky, svařené víno a punč a hlavně spoustu
zajímavých vánočních dárků. Děti nadchne živý betlém s oslíkem a ovečkami. Samozřejmostí je i bohatý kulturní program.
První velkou akcí, která trhy doprovodí, bude rozsvícení vánočního stromu. Ten se v srdci města rozzáří 29. listopadu. V několika uplynulých letech vybojoval vždy první místo
v celostátní anketě o nejkrásnější vánoční strom v českých
městech. Jaký asi bude letos?
Také katedrála sv. Bartoloměje žije v adventním čase vánoční atmosférou. Konají se adventní půlhodinky, rorátní zpěvy,
půlnoční bohoslužby či vánoční koncerty. Součástí některých
programů je duchovní slovo biskupa Františka Radkovského.
Dlouholetou tradici má v Plzni také Vánoční zpívání koled s Českým rozhlasem Plzeň. V roce 2015 se hlavní
plzeňské náměstí zaplní stovkami lidí 16. prosince a všichni
si společně zazpívají koledy Narodil se Kristus pán a Nesem
vám noviny. Prostřednictvím rozhlasových linek se k nim přidají i tisíce lidí na náměstích dalších českých měst.

Vánoční čas uzavře Tříkrálový průvod. Průvod s Kašparem,
Melicharem, Baltazarem a živou hudbou je součástí dobročinné Tříkrálové sbírky a půjde 3. ledna 2016 od katedrály sv.
Bartoloměje ke kostelíku U Ježíška.
Po Vánocích přichází čas radosti a veselení, jenž vrcholí obnovenou tradicí masopustů. V ulicích města zní folklor a k vidění jsou rozmanité maškary. Velké průvody se v Plzni konají
každoročně dva a tentokrát půjdou 6. února.

Just a few of old traditions and atmosphere has survived into the
twenty-first century as those at the turn of the year. Pilsen, too, lives
its Advent, Christmas, Twelfth Night and Carnival fully.
The Advent in 2015 starts on November 29. Two days before, the winter square
will bloom in vivid colours of Christmas
goods on the stalls of the Christmas
market. Visitors will find here folk traditions and crafts, delicious gingerbreads,
mulled wine, punch and, above all, a wide
array of Christmas gifts. Children will be
spellbound by live nativity scene. All of
this will be accompanied by a rich cultural
programme.
The first major event to accompany
the market will be the lighting of the
Christmas tree on November 29. In
past years it has been voted the most
beautiful Christmas tree in the country
in the national contest. What will it be
like this year?
The Cathedral of St Bartholomew,
too, will live with Christmas atmosphere.
There will be Advent half-hours, Advent
morning masses, midnight masses and
Christmas concerts. Some of the programs
will include spiritual speech by the Bishop
František Radkovský.

Radio Pilsen has a long tradition in the
city. In 2015 the main square in Pilsen
will fill with hundreds of people on December 16 and all will jointly sing The

winterliche Stadt ein.
Nur wenige alte Traditionen haben sich samt ihrer Atmosphäre in
dem Maße bis ins 21. Jahrhundert erhalten wie die Bräuche um
die Jahreswende. Auch in Pilsen werden Advent, Weihnachten, die
Heiligen Drei Könige und Fasching gefeiert.
Der diesjährige Advent beginnt am
29. November. Der winterliche Platz
der Republik wird jedoch schon zwei
Tage früher in bunten Farben leuchten:
wenn der Weihnachtsmarkt seine Stände
eröffnet. Hier findet man volkstümliche
Traditionen und Handwerke, duftende
Lebkuchen, Glühwein und Punsch und
vor allem jede Menge interessanter
Weihnachtsgeschenke. Kinder können
sich auf eine lebende Weihnachtskrippe
mit einem Esel und Schäfchen freuen.
Und natürlich gibt es auch ein vielseitiges
Kulturprogramm.
Pilsens miterleben kann. In einer
gesamttschechischen Umfrage nach
dem schönsten Weihnachtsbaum hat
Pilsen in den letzten Jahren mehrfach
den ersten Platz belegt. Wie wird der
Baum wohl in diesem Jahr aussehen?
Die erste große Veranstaltung ist das
Lichteranzünden am Weihnachtsbaum,
das man am 29. November im Herzen

zudem das Weihnachtsliedersingen
mit dem Tschechischen Rundfunk
Auch die St.-Bartholomäus-Kathedrale
ist in der Adventszeit von weihnachtlicher
Atmosphäre erfüllt. Es finden Adventsvespern,
Rorate - Me ssen , mit ternächtliche
Gottesdienste und Weihnachtskonzerte
statt. Auf einigen Veranstaltungen wird auch
der Pilsner Bischof František Radkovský
das Wort ergreifen.

Christmas time will be closed by the
Twelfth Night procession with Caspar,
Melichar and Balthazar and live music.
It is a part of the Twelfth Night charity
and will go on January 3, 2016, from St
Bartholomew’s Cathedral to the Church
of the Baby Jesus.
After Christmas comes the time of joy
and feasts, culminating in the carnival.
Folklore fills the streets and there are
various masks to be seen. Usually there
are two big processions in Pilsen and this
year they will both go on February 6.

Hunderten von Menschen füllen und alle
werden gemeinsam bekannte tschechische
Weihnachtslieder wie „Narodil se Kristus
pán“ oder „Nesem vám noviny“ singen.
Per Rundfunkübertragung werden sie
dabei mit Tausenden weiteren Menschen
verbunden sein, die sich auf den Plätzen
anderer tschechischer Städte versammeln.
Den Abschluss der Weihnachtszeit bildet
der Dreikönigszug. Der von Livemusik
begleitete Umzug mit Kaspar, Melchior
und Balthasar ist Teil der caritativen
Dreikönigsammlung und führt am 3. Januar
2016 von der St.-Bartholomäus-Kathedrale
zu der kleinen Kirche U Ježíška.
Nach Weihnachten beginnt eine vergnügliche
Zeit, deren Höhepunkt die wiederbelebte
Faschingstradition ist. Die Straßen der
Stadt füllen sich mit Folkloremusik und
bunten Maskeraden. In Pilsen gibt es jedes
Jahr zwei große Umzüge, die diesmal am
6. Februar stattfinden.

i historická ponaučení
V Plzni vedle sebe působí dvě profesionální divadla: Divadlo J. K. Tyla a Divadlo
Alfa. První je čtyřsouborovým divadlem hrajícím převážně pro dospělé publikum,
druhé se orientuje na diváky od tří let. Kromě toho jsou v Plzni často k vidění
i zájezdová divadla nebo atraktivní inscenace pražských souborů.

There are two professional theatres in Pilsen: J. K. Tyl’s Theatre and
Theatre Alfa. The first is a four-ensemble theatre playing mainly for

dem Programm. Operette und Musical
bringen nach dreißig Jahren wieder
„Clochemerle“ auf die Bühne. Zudem wird
es eine Theateradaption des bekannten
Onegin and Puss in Boots for children.
The operetta and musical will see, after
thirty years, Clochemerle, Rebels will
step down from the silver screen and the
story of the local football club Viktoria will
be put on stage too. Ballet will perform
the Swan Lake, Pied Piper and Carmen.
Drama is about to perform a stage version of Pilsen troubles in 1953, of Pilsen
legends and Don Juan.

Applause after gong
Theatre which plays exclusively for children
has one specialty: every gong before the
beginning is rewarded by an applause. So
much the children look forward to their
fairy-tale. Alfa has prepared four new
performances for the current season. In
the Attic will see discarded toys from a
dusty attic coming to life, the youngest
spectators will no doubt appreciate The
Rolling Whale, for the older there is the
stage version of Daniela Fischerova’s
book The Offence Institute. The youth
and adults will no doubt appreciate the
adaptation of Molière’s The Flying Doctor.

Das ausschließlich für Kinder spielende
Theater Alfa hat eine Besonderheit: Jeder
Gong vor Vorstellungsbeginn wird mit
Applaus honoriert. So sehr freuen sich
die Kinder auf ihr Märchen. Für die neue
Saison hat das Ensemble vier Stücke
einstudiert. In der Inszenierung „Na
půdě“ („Auf dem Boden“) erwachen auf
einem verstaubten Dachboden abgelegte
Spielsachen zum Leben, die kleinsten
Zuschauer erwartet das Märchen „Kolíbá
se velryba“ („Der schaukelnde Walfisch“),
an die größeren richtet sich eine Dramatisierung des Buches „Pohoršovna“

Bacha a zahraje i Bachovy koncerty pro
housle a orchestr. V nich se jedinečným
způsobem prolnou tóny dobových nástrojů barokního ansámblu s moderními
modrými houslemi Pavla Šporcla. V Plzni
vystoupí 1. prosince ve Velké synagoze.

The word concert stands for a live music performance with no

At the end of October, the atmosphere of
Peklo will be energised by the blues drive
of John Mayall (photo 3). His music career
spans remarkable fifty years and at eightytwo he still can play with full dedication.
He was named the Officer of the British
Empire in 2005. John Mayall will stop in
Pilsen on October 31, 2015, as a part of
his Hand That Play The Blues Tour 2015.

they will fill Pilsen’s ice-hockey arena with
their music. Hard-rock fans will have the

The excellent Czech violinist Pavel Šporcl,
accompanied by The Czech Ensemble
Baroque, sets out on a tour in late 2015,
with a programme called Bach to Šporcl.
During this tour he will present his new CD
with sonatas and partitas for solo violin by
J. S. Bach and will play Bach’s concerts
for violin and orchestra. The performance
will marry, in a unique manner, the tones
of historical instruments of the Baroque
ensemble with the modern blue violin of
Pavel Šporcl. They will perform in Pilsen
on December 1 in the Big Synagogue.

John Mayall
Ende Oktober wird die Atmosphäre des
Kulturhauses „Peklo“ von der BluesEnergie des berühmten britischen Musikers John Mayall (Foto 3) beseelt sein.
Mayalls musikalische Karriere währt schon
beachtliche fünfzig Jahre, und auch mit
82 spielt er noch mit vollem Einsatz vor
Zuschauern auf aller Welt. 2005 wurde
Mayall von der englischen Königin mit dem
Britischen Verdienstorden geehrt. Er wird
am 31. Oktober 2015 im Rahmen seiner
Tournee „Hand That Play The Blues Tour
2015“ in Pilsen auftreten.

Bach auf Šporcl
Gegen Jahresende geht der hervorragende
tschechische Violinist Pavel Šporcl auf
Tournee, diesmal mit dem Czech Ensemble
Baroque und dem Programm „Bacha na
Šporcla“ („Bach auf Šporcl“). Hierbei wird
er seine neue CD mit Bachs Sonaten und
Partiten für Solovioline vorstellen und
Bachs Konzerte für Violine und Orchester
spielen. In seiner Darbietung verquicken
sich in einzigartiger Weise die Klänge der
historischen Instrumente des Barockensembles mit Šporcls moderner blauer
Geige. In Pilsen ist er am 1. Dezember
2015 in der Großen Synagoge zu hören.

Jaké bylo výtvarné umění, které zdobilo
stěny objektů i malířská plátna, zámecké zahrady či volnou krajinu na území
dnešního Plzeňského kraje od začátku
17. do druhé poloviny 18. století? Odpověď hledá výstava, která probíhá
od 28. října 2015 do 20. března
2016 v Západočeské galerii Plzeň,
ve výstavní síni Masné krámy.
Františka Josefa Luxe významně ovlivnil
autor výmalby klášterní baziliky v Kladrubech, bavorský malíř Kosma Damian
Asam. Nezaměnitelnou stopu zanechali
pražští či bavorští tvůrci i v sochařské
tvorbě, kde na ně navázali umělci místní. Dobový průměr převyšuje především
dílo Lazara Widemanna, které zdobí například zámek v Křimicích.
Poloha regionu na půli cesty mezi Prahou a Bavorskem se výrazně odráží
v tom, co zde lze nalézt, ať již jde o působení ve své době věhlasných umělců
z velkých center, nebo tvorbu lokálních
tvůrců. Proto výstava představí mimo
jiné špičková díla hlavních tvůrců českého baroka – malíře Petra Brandla
(foto 1), sochaře Matyáše Bernarda
Brauna (foto 2) či architekta Jana Blažeje Santiniho. Své místo zde budou mít
šlechtické rody Lažanských, Kokořovských a Vrtbů nebo významní církevní
patroni umění v čele s plaským opatem
Evženem Tyttlem.
V oblasti barokní architektury patří v našem kraji nesporný primát Santinimu

Baroque art in the Pilsen region and
Western Bohemia
The region of Western Bohemia is full of Baroque jewels. We will find
here monasteries, estates and mansions, chateaux and minor sacral
sights in all the towns, villages and in the landscape. They are by
famous artists or by those who were influenced by them.
What was the visual art that decorated
the walls of buildings, pictures, chateau
gardens or landscape in the Pilsen region
from the beginning of the seventeenth to
the late eighteenth century? The answer
is searched for by an exhibition hosted
from October 28 to March 20, 2016
in the Gallery of West Bohemia,
Pilsen, the exhibition hall Masné krámy.
The location of the region halfway between Prague and Bavaria is significantly
reflected in what can be found here, be
it the work of the then famous artists
from major culture centres or the work of
local artists. The exhibition will introduce,
among other things, top works of the main
artists of the Czech Baroque – painter
Petr Brandl (photo 1), sculptor Matyáš
Bernard Braun (photo 2) or architect Jan
Blažej Santini. The aristocratic families of
Lažanští, Kokořovští and Vrtbů will have
their place here, as will the church patrons
of art, headed by Plasy abbot Evžen Tyttl.

In den Städten, Dörfern wie auch in der freien Landschaft finden
sich Klostergelände, Güter, Höfe, Schlösser und kleinere sakrale
Denkmäler. Oft stammen sie von namhaften Architekten oder von
einheimischen Künstlern, die von deren Werk beeinflusst wurden.
Wie sah die bildende Kunst aus, die Anfang des 17. bis zur zweiten Hälfte des
18. Jahrhunderts Gebäudefassaden und
Malerleinwände, Schlossparks oder die freie
Landschaft der heutigen Pilsner Region
schmückte? Antworten darauf sucht eine
Ausstellung, die vom 28. Oktober 2015
bis 20. März 2016 im Ausstellungssaal
Masné krámy der Westböhmischen
Galerie Pilsen zu sehen ist.
Spitzenwerke von führenden Vertretern
des böhmischen Barock wie dem Maler
Peter Brandl (Foto 1), dem Bildhauer
Matthias Bernhard Braun (Foto 2) oder
dem Architekten Johann Blasius Santini.
Erinnert wird jedoch auch an die Adelsgeschlechter Lažanský, Kokořovský und
Vrtba sowie an bedeutende kirchliche
Kunstmäzene, allen voran Eugen Tyttl,
der Abt des Klosters Plasy.
Die Lage der Pilsner Region auf halbem
Weg zwischen Prag und Bayern hat die
hiesige Kunst sichtlich geprägt, sei es
im Wirken seinerzeit namhafter, großen
Zentren entstammender Meister oder
im Schaffen lokaler Künstler. Die Ausstellung zeigt daher unter anderem
Westböhmen kann sich beachtlicher Werke
von barocken Meistern rühmen, die auch
regionale Künstler beeinflussten. So stand
z. B. der westböhmische Künstler František
Josef Lux in starkem Maße unter dem
Einfluss des bayerischen Malers Cosmas
Damian Asam, des Schöpfers der Malereien
in der westböhmischen Klosterbasilika
Kladruby. Eine unverkennbare Spur
hinterließen die Prager oder bayerischen
Meister auch im bildhauerischen Schaffen, in welchem einheimische Künstler an
sie anknüpften. Dem damaligen Durchschnitt weit überlegen ist insbesondere
das – zum Beispiel auf Schloss Křimice
zu bewundernde – Werk des böhmischen
Bildhauers Lazar Widemann.
Eine führende Stellung in der hiesigen
Barockarchitektur gebührt unstrittig den
Baumeistern Johann Blasius Santini sowie
Christoph und Kilian Ignatz Dientzenhofer.
Ihre Arbeiten inspirierten einheimische
Architekten wie z. B. den Pilsner Jakub
Auguston oder den Baumeister des
Klosters Chotěšov, Matěj Ondřej Kondel.
All diese Aspekte und Zusammenhänge
werden in der umfassenden Ausstellung
beleuchtet – teilweise zum ersten Mal
überhaupt.

Plzeňan okouzlený Maory
Už jen do 20. září trvá v Masných
krámech výstava Gottfried Lindauer,
plzeňský malíř novozélandských Maorů (foto 3). Západočeská galerie jí
v rámci programu Evropského hlavního města kultury připomíná umělce,
jenž v roce 1874 opustil rodné město
a odešel na Nový Zéland. Tady proslul
svými malbami původních maorských
obyvatel. Ty jsou dnes na Novém Zélandu považovány za součást národního kulturního dědictví.
Stovka Národopisného muzea
Národopisné muzeum v Plzni slaví sté
narozeniny. Připomíná si je výstavou,
která se zde bude konat od 25. září
do 3. ledna. Návštěvníky seznámí se

složitým vznikem muzea, s postupným
budováním rozsáhlých a unikátních
sbírek a s osobnostmi, které stály
u jeho zrodu a jimž vděčí za to, že je
dnes jedním z nejvýznamnějších etnografických pracovišť v republice.
Porcelán skvostného designu
Do 8. listopadu je možné v Západočeském muzeu vidět výstavu užité
tvorby Ladislava Sutnara (foto 1). Početný soubor exponátů včetně všech
variant jeho stolních souprav, jídelních
příborů a dalších kovových doplňků
představuje zásady Sutnarova funkcionalistického designu. Zpestřením
výstavy je kolekce hraček.

do konce listopadu zde bude k vidění
souborná výstava představující všechny
laureáty Bienále kresby. V prosinci dostane veřejnost mimořádnou příležitost
seznámit se s díly, jež jsou v majetku

tu představí volná porcelánová tvorba
výtvarníků z partnerského města Limoges. Obě výstavy končí 13. ledna.

by the Māori
Till September 20 you can go to

Capital of Culture the Gallery of West
Bohemia commemorates an artist who
left his native city for New Zealand in
1874. There he became famous by his
paintings of the Māori natives. His paintings are today considered a part of the
national cultural heritage of New Zealand.

The Hundredth Anniversary of
the Geographical Museum
The Geographical Museum in Pilsen
celebrates its hundredth anniversary.
It is commemorated by an exhibition
that will run from September 25 to
January 3. Visitors will learn about the
complicated foundation of the museum,
gradual building of vast and unique collections and personalities that stood at its
birth and thanks to whom it is one of the
most important ethnographic institutions
in the country.

Ein Pilsner unter Maoris
Bis 20. September ist im Ausstellungssaal
in den Fleischbänken (Masné krámy) die
Ausstellung „Gottfried Lindauer, Pilsner
Maler der neuseeländischen Maori“
(Foto 3) zu sehen. Mit dieser erinnert die
Westböhmische Galerie im Rahmen der
„Europäischen Kulturhauptstadt“ an einen
Künstler, der 1874 seine Heimatstadt
verließ, um nach Neuseeland zu gehen,
wo er mit seinen Maori-Porträts berühmt
wurde. Die Gemälde werden heute in
Neuseeland als Teil des nationalen
Kulturerbes betrachtet.
Hundert Jahre Volkskundemuseum
Das Pilsner Volkskundemuseum feiert
in diesem Jahr seinen hundertsten Geburtstag. Anlässlich dieses Jubiläums
wird hier vom 25. September bis
3. Januar eine Ausstellung gezeigt,
die den Besucher mit der komplizierten
Entstehungsgeschichte des Museums,
dem allmählichen Ausbau seiner umfangreichen und einzigartigen Sammlungen
wie auch mit den Persönlichkeiten
vertraut macht, die an seiner Wiege
standen und denen es zu verdanken
hat, dass es heute eines der bedeutendsten ethnografischen Institute der
Tschechischen Republik ist.

From Nikl to Limoges
The Gallery of the City of Pilsen has a rich
offer for the late 2015 too. In September
it hosts an exhibition called Time-lapses of

to the end of November the gallery will
present a joint exhibition of all the laureates
of the Biennial of Drawing. In December
the public will have an exceptional opportunity to see works owned by the Artoteka
of the city of Pilsen. At the same time, it
will run a presentation of china by artists
from the partner city of Limoges. Both
exhibition will close on January 13.

Bis 8. November zeigt das Westböhmische Museum eine Ausstellung mit
Gebrauchskunstwerken des aus Pilsen
stammenden Designers Ladislav Sutnar

Exponaten, die auch sämtliche Varianten
seiner Tischgarnituren, Essbestecke und
weiterer Metallaccessoires umfasst,
vermittelt Grundprinzipien von Sutnars

ebenfalls in der Ausstellung zu sehen ist.
Von Nikl bis Limoges
Ein abwechslungsreiches Angebot erwartet
die Besucher zum Ende des Jahres 2015
auch in der Galerie der Stadt Pilsen. Diese
lädt im September zu der Ausstellung
„Časosběry“ (Foto 2) („Zeitlesen“) von
Petr Nikl ein. Von Mitte Oktober bis
Ende November ist eine Sammelausstellung mit sämtlichen Preisträgern der
Grafik-Biennale zu sehen. Im Dezember
hat man die seltene Gelegenheit, Werke
aus dem Besitz der Pilsner Artothek
kennenzulernen. Parallel dazu werden
freie Porzellankreationen von bildenden
Künstlern aus der Partnerstadt Limoges
gezeigt. Beide Ausstellungen enden am
13. Januar.

Byty navržené Adolfem Loosem jsou nejnovějším
hitem turistické nabídky
Jak žila společenská smetánka meziválečných let? Ta plzeňská, bohatá židovská, si
mohla dovolit pozvat slavného architekta Adolfa Loose, aby jim navrhl interiéry jejich
bytů. Do současnosti se jich dochoval jen zlomek. Tři z nich jsou nyní přístupné
veřejnosti a staly se hitem turistické sezony 2015.
„Dům se musí líbit všem. Na rozdíl od uměleckého díla, které
se nemusí líbit nikomu. Umělecké dílo se zrodí, aniž by existovala jeho potřeba. Dům pokrývá určitou potřebu.“ V těchto
větách z článku Architektura formuloval Adolf Loos svou základní myšlenku učení o bydlení. Nad jeho interiéry v celku
i detailech žasne člověk i po téměř sto letech.
Vídeň, Paříž, Plzeň
Adolf Loos pocházel z Brna, jeho architektonické myšlení
významně ovlivnila Amerika. K jeho nejdůležitějším stavbám
patří obchodní dům Goldmann & Salatsch na Michalském náměstí ve Vídni, dům básníka Tristana Tzary v Paříži a vila pro
stavitele Františka Müllera v Praze.
Právě zákazníci či spolupracovníci plzeňské firmy Müller
a Kapsa se záhy stali další Loosovou klientelou. Byli kultivovaní, zámožní a nechat si od něj upravit byt se pro ně stalo
prestižní záležitostí. A tak byl věhlasný architekt pověřen rekonstrukcí čtrnácti plzeňských interiérů.

Klienti nebyli nuceni šetřit, a tak ani Loos na ničem nešetřil.
Používal ušlechtilé materiály, prostor rozšiřoval velkými zrcadly, stěny obkládal mramorem nebo drahým dřevem. Interiér budoval se zapojením veškerých vymožeností, které jeho
doba skýtala.

Adolf Loos-designed flats the latest hit of
the tourist offer
How did the high society live in between the wars? The high society
in Pilsen, rich Jews, could afford to commission the famous architect
Adolf Loos to design the interior of their flats. Only a fraction of them
survived to the present. Three of these are accessible to the general
public and they have become a hit of the 2015 tourist season.
Most of Loos’s interiors have either not
survived to the present or are not accessible. As a part of organised tours it is
possible to see the house of the Brummels, the former flat of doctor Vogl and
the flat of the Kraus family. Time to time
there are cultural event held in Loos’s
interiors and these provide visitors with
unique experience.

so wurde der berühmte Architekt mit der

it. A house, on the contrary, is there to
satisfy some need.” These words, published in the article entitled Architecture,
formulate Loos’s basic theory of housing.
His interior designs are breathtaking even
after a hundred years.
„Das Haus hat allen zu gefallen. Zum
Unterschiede vom Kunstwerk, das niemandem zu gefallen hat. [...]. Das Kunstwerk
wird in die Welt gesetzt, ohne daß ein
Bedürfnis dafür vorhanden wäre. Das

aus Loos‘ Essay Architektur enthalten den
Grundgedanken seiner Wohnkonzeption.
Über seine Interieurs wie über einzelne

später noch ins Staunen.

Wohnungen aus der Feder Adolf Loos‘
Wie lebte die Crème de la Crème der Zwischenkriegszeit? Die
Pilsner jüdische Oberschicht konnte es sich leisten, den berühmten
Architekten Adolf Loos mit dem Entwurf ihrer Wohnungseinrichtungen
zu beauftragen. Von Loos‘ Interieurs ist jedoch nur ein Bruchteil
erhalten geblieben. Drei dieser Innenausstattungen sind nun der
Öffentlichkeit zugänglich und gehören zu den Hauptattraktionen der
diesjährigen Touristensaison.

CZ/ Za hvězdou Davidovou
Židovskou komunitu připomínají dvě synagogy
a Zahrada vzpomínek
Ve středověké Plzni stály na území
tehdejšího ghetta dvě synagogy, a to
poblíž dnešní křižovatky Solní a Sedláčkovy ulice. V roce 1504 však byli židé
z města vypovězeni, a tak se sem jejich
kultura vrátila až téměř po 350 letech,
kdy došlo k náboženskému, ekonomickému i politickému uvolnění.
Pomocná, která krátce sloužila i jako
židovská škola. Po válce se z ní stalo skladiště, a pak už rychle chátrala.
V roce 1997 se zřítila její střecha. Stěny však zůstaly a uvnitř vznikla v roce
2002 Zahrada vzpomínek. Více než dva
a půl tisíce oblázků nese jména plzeňských obětí holocaustu.
Stará synagoga
Velká synagoga
Za čerstvě zbořenými městskými
hradbami vyrostla záhy nová synagoga
(foto 2). Očím křesťanské veřejnosti však musela být skryta, a tak byla
postavena ve vnitrobloku mezi dnešní Americkou třídou a Smetanovými
sady. Novorománská stavba s dvoupatrovou dřevěnou galerií a krásnou
schránou na Tóru tu stojí dodnes. Nedávno prošla rekonstrukcí a konají se
v ní kulturní akce.
Koncem roku 1888 byl položen základní kámen Velké synagogy (foto 1, 3).

Všechny synagogy jsou přístupné veřejnosti a návštěvníci si mohou vybrat,
zda si je prohlédnou s průvodcem,
nebo sami.
Židovské hřbitovy
Židovská komunita v Plzni dnes používá k pohřbívání hřbitov na kraji města
při výpadovce na Prahu. Starý židovský
hřbitov se nalézal severně od centra
města. Počátkem 20. století však zanikl a následně byl zcela zničen. Dnes
ho připomíná pietně upravené místo
s několika zbylými kameny. Středověký
židovský hřbitov byl objeven při stavbě
obchodního centra Plaza.
Zahrada vzpomínek
Když synagoga, dnes zvaná Stará, přestávala svou kapacitou postačovat, byla
k ní v roce 1875 přistavěna synagoga
Velkorysá stavba pojala až dva tisíce
věřících. I ji však poznamenala válka
a následná léta socialistického nezájmu a rychle chátrala. Na konci 20.
století byla jedna z největších synagog
na světě zachráněna a dnes je místem
pro kulturní i náboženské akce.

The Jewish Community is remembered by two
synagogues and the Garden of Memory
There were two synagogues in the
mediaeval Pilsen ghetto, both near the
crossroads of Solní and Sedláčkova
streets. In 1504, however, the Jews
were driven from the city so their culture
returned here after nearly 350 years,
at the time of religious, economic and
political easing of tensions.
The Great Synagogue
The foundations of the Great Synagogue
(photo 1, 3) were laid in late 1888. The
huge building had capacity for up to
two thousands of believers. It was, too,
damaged by the war and, subsequently,
neglect of Socialist authorities. At the end
of the twentieth century it was saved and
todays serves as the venue for cultural
and religious events.
All synagogues are accessible to the public
and the visitors can choose whether they
visit them with a guide or on their own.
Old Synagogue
Shortly a new synagogue (photo 2)
was built just outside the demolished
city walls. It had to be hidden from the
Christian eyes, however, so it was built
inside block of houses between today’s
American avenue and Smetanovy sady.
The neo-romanesque building with a
two-storey wooden gallery and beautiful Torah box has survived. It has been
reconstructed recently and serves as a
venue for culture events.
Garden of Memories was built inside. Over
two and a half thousands of pebbles bear
the names of Pilsen’s holocaust victims.
Jewish Cemetries
The Jewish Community in Pilsen currently uses the cemetery at the outskirts
of the city near the road to Prague. The
old Jewish cemetery was located north
of the City. It stopped being used in the
early 20th century and, subsequently, was
completely destroyed. Today its existence
is commemorated by a special memorial
with a few remaining stones. A mediaeval
Jewish cemetery was discovered when
the shopping mall Plaza was being built.

Synagogue, no longer sufficed in capacity, an auxiliary building was added to it
in 1875 which also served as a Jewish
school. After WWII it was turned into
a warehouse and then quickly fell into
disrepair. In 1997 its roof fell down. The
walls, however, survived and in 2002, the

An die Pilsner jüdische Gemeinde erinnern
heute zwei Synagogen und der Garten der
Erinnerungen
Im mittelalterlichen Pilsen standen auf
dem Gebiet des damaligen Ghettos zwei
Synagogen, die sich unweit der heutigen
Straßenkreuzung zwischen der Solní und der
Sedláčkova ulice befanden. 1504 wurden
die Juden jedoch aus der Stadt verwiesen.
Wieder in Pilsen heimisch wurde die jüdische
Kultur erst nahezu 350 Jahre später, als
sich die Lage religiös, wirtschaftlich und
politisch entspannt hatte.
Die Alte Synagoge
Bald darauf entstand hinter den gerade
abgerissenen Stadtmauern eine neue
Synagoge (Foto 2). Vor den Augen
der christlichen Öffentlichkeit musste
sie jedoch verborgen bleiben, und so
errichtete man sie in einem Innenhof
zwischen den heutigen Straßen Americká
třída und Smetanovy sady. Dort steht der
neoromanische Bau mit seiner zweistöckigen Holzgalerie und dem schönen
Thoraschrein bis heute. Unlängst wurde
die Synagoge saniert und dient nun als
Ort für kulturelle Veranstaltungen.
Der Garten der Erinnerungen
Als die Kapazität der Synagoge, die
heute die Alte Synagoge genannt wird,
nicht mehr ausreichte, wurde im Jahr
1875 eine Hilfssynagoge angebaut, die
vorübergehend auch als jüdische Schule
diente. Nach dem Krieg wurde sie in ein
Depot umfunktioniert und begann rasch
zu verfallen. 1997 stürzte ihr Dach ein.
Die Mauern blieben jedoch erhalten
und in ihrem Inneren entstand 2002 der
Garten der Erinnerungen. Auf mehr als
zweieinhalbtausend Kieselsteinen sind
hier die Namen der Pilsner HolocaustOpfer zu lesen.
Die Große Synagoge
Ende des Jahres 1888 wurde der Grundstein
der Großen Synagoge (Foto 1, 3) gelegt.
Der großzügige Bau bot bis zu zweitausend
Gläubigen Platz. Auch er wurde jedoch
vom Krieg und den nachfolgenden Jahren
sozialistischen Desinteresses gezeichnet
und begann zu verfallen. Gerettet wurde
die Synagoge, die zu den größten der Welt

zählt, erst Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts.
Heute finden hier erneut kulturelle und
religiöse Veranstaltungen statt.
Alle Pilsner Synagogen sind für die
Öffentlichkeit zugänglich. Der Besucher
kann selbst entscheiden, ob er sie allein
oder mit Führung besichtigen möchte.
Jüdische Friedhöfe
Für Begräbnisse dient der Pilsner Jüdischen Gemeinde heute ein Friedhof am
Stadtrand, an der Ausfallstraße nach
Prag. Der alte jüdische Friedhof befand
sich nördlich vom Stadtzentrum. Anfang
des 20. Jahrhunderts wurde er jedoch
aufgelöst und anschließend vollständig
zerstört. Heute erinnert an ihn ein pietätvoll
gestalteter Platz mit einigen verbliebenen
Steinen. Der mittelalterliche Friedhof wurde
beim Bau des neuen Einkaufszentrums
Plaza wiederentdeckt.

Věda hrou
Největším plzeňským lákadlem pro rodiny s dětmi od tří let je
bezesporu Techmania Science Center (foto 1, 2, 4). Interaktivní centrum seznamování se s vědou a technikou přilákalo
jen v roce 2014 více než dvě stě tisíc návštěvníků. Poznávání
přírodních zákonů a fungování světa nabízí prostřednictvím expozice Vesmír, Malá věda, Filmohraní, Vodní svět, Člověk versus
zvíře a dalších. Větší děti si mohou vybírat z programů v laboratořích a dílnách a všechny bez rozdílu nadchnou poutavé show
nebo filmy ve 3D planetáriu (foto 3). Na podzim 2015 přichází Techmania s novým celoročním tématem zaměřeným na výživu. Přinese novou expozici, programy v laboratořích a dílnách
i nové filmy v planetáriu. V Techmanii je také k vidění slavná
Entropa – plastika Davida Černého, která ukazuje české stereotypy ve vnímání ostatních evropských národů.

Historie a zvířata
I v zimních měsících zve k návštěvě Zoologická a botanická zahrada. Tady se malí i velcí návštěvníci hravě přenesou
do horké Afriky, daleké Austrálie nebo kamkoli jinam, kam
budou chtít. Do konce října je v provozu i populární DinoPark, jenž je přenese až do hlubin pravěku. Dějin o poznání
mladších se pak mohou dotknout v Plzeňském historickém podzemí – labyrintu chodeb, sklepů a studní pod centrem města. Tady do konce roku 2015 trvá výstava mladých
výtvarníků ze střední umělecko-průmyslové školy Zámeček
nazvaná Světýlka v hlubinách.

Děti, které milují pohádky, si v Plzni opravdu přijdou na své.
S pohádkovými bytostmi hodnými i zlými, známými i méně
známými se mohou seznámit v Muzeu loutek, Muzeu

many interesting things and will let their
fantasy go wild.
History and animals
Even in winter months you can visit the
Zoological and Botanical Garden.
Here visitors young and old will be transported to hot Africa, remote Australia
or anywhere else where they wish. The
popular DinoPark is open until the end
of October and here they will have the
opportunity to visit the depths of prehistory. Pilsen’s historical underground,
on the other hand, offers a glimpse of a
younger history – it is a labyrinth of corridors, cellars and wells under the centre
of the city. Till the end of the year it will
house an exhibition by young artists of the
secondary technological school Zámeček
called Lights in Depths.

Die größte Attraktion für Familien mit

das Techmania Science Center (Foto 1,

sich mit Wissenschaft und Technik vertraut
machen kann, hatte allein im Jahr 2014
mehr als zweihunderttausend Besucher.
Ausstellungen wie „Weltall“, „Kleine Wissenschaft“, „Filmspiel“, „Wasserwelt“ oder
„Mensch versus Tier“ vermitteln Einblick
in Naturgesetze und Funktionsprinzipien
der Welt. Für größere Kinder stehen in
Laboratorien und Werkstätten zudem
verschiedene Programme zur Auswahl.
Für alle Altersgruppen geeignet sind
die faszinierenden Shows und Filme im
hiesigen 3D-Planetarium (Foto 3). Im
Herbst 2015 eröffnet Techmania ein
neues, auf Ernährung ausgerichtetes
Jahresthema, das eine neue Ausstellung,
neue Programme in den Laboratorien
und Werkstätten und neue Filme im
Planetarium umfassen wird. Zudem ist
hier die berühmte Plastik „Entropa“ von
David Černý zu sehen, die tschechische
Stereotype bei der Wahrnehmung anderer
europäischer Völker zeigt.
Die Märchenwelt ruft
Kleine Märchenfreunde kommen in
Pilsen wirklich auf ihre Kosten. Guten
wie bösen Märchengestalten – auch
weniger bekannten – begegnet man im
Marionettenmuseum, im Gespenstermuseum oder im Märchenhaus,
wo den Besucher eine zum Anfassen
nahe Märchenwelt erwartet. Hier kann
man spielen, interessante Dinge erfahren
und vor allem seiner Phantasie freien
Lauf lassen.
Geschichte und Tiere
Auch in den Wintermonaten laden der
Zoologische und Botanische Gar-

ten zu einem Besuch ein und entführen
kleine wie große Gäste spielerisch ins
heiße Afrika, ins ferne Australien oder wo
immer sie hinwollen. Bis Ende Oktober

ist unter dem Titel „Světýlka v hlubinách“
(„Lichter in der Tiefe“) noch bis Ende des
Jahres 2015 eine Ausstellung junger bildender Künstler von der Fachoberschule
für Kunstgewerbe Zámeček zu sehen.

Až do 19. prosince patří centrální
náměstí každou lichou sobotu dopoledne farmářským trhům. Produkty
regionálních pěstitelů, výrobců či farem
tu lidé mohou nakupovat od 8 do 12
hodin. Devatenáctého září se navíc
přidávají Farmářské trhy na nádvoří pivovaru Plzeňský Prazdroj. Další dobroty
lze zakoupit i na příležitostných jarmarcích na náměstí. Během podzimu se tu
koná trh Václavský, Havelský, Martinský
(foto 2) a Vánoční a po Novém roce
dojde na trh Valentýnský a Velikonoční.
Docela jiným ruchem ožije náměstí
6. září 2015. To se tu bude konat další
ročník oblíbeného Festivalu polévky
(foto 1). Uzavírá tříměsíční Živou ulici
a ve čtyřicetilitrových kotlích se na něm
vaří polévky různých druhů, chutí a vůní.
Kdo na pořekadlo našich babiček, že
polévka je grunt, moc nedá a ze všeho
nejvíc si pochutná na pořádném pivu,
ten by neměl 19. září vynechat tradiční
Slunce ve skle. Jde o největší festival
minipivovarů na světě a žije jím nádvoří
pivovaru Purkmistr v Plzni-Černicích.
Pivo vůbec k Plzni patří jako k ptákům
křídla, a tak se rok co rok sluší přijít pogratulovat k narozeninám piva Pilsner
Urquell. Letos se tato oslava, Pilsner
Fest (foto 3, 4), uskuteční 3. října.
Pivo poteče opět proudem a o zábavu
se postará řada předních kapel: Monkey Business, Xindl X, Michal Hrůza
a spousta dalších.
Koho podobné akce se stovkami návštěvníků nelákají a dá raději přednost
lahodné krmi v dobré restauraci, ten si
Plzeň může užít také do sytosti. Množství restaurací, hospůdek, barů, kaváren
a cukráren je tu rekordní.

kommen zudem die Farmermärkte auf
dem Hof der Pilsner-Urquell-Brauerei

der Wenzels-, Gallus-, Martins- (Foto 2)
Ein Treiben ganz anderer Art belebt
den Platz am 6. September 2015. An
diesem findet ein weiterer Jahrgang des
beliebten Suppenfestivals (Foto 1)
statt, das alljährlich den Abschluss des
dreimonatigen Straßenfestivals „Živá
ulice“ („Lebendige Straße“) bildet. In
Vierzig-Liter-Kesseln werden Suppen
verschiedenster Art, verschiedenster
Geschmacks- und Duftnoten zubereitet.
Wer auf die Redewendung, dass man
ist, was man isst, nicht sonderlich viel
gibt und sich lieber ein ordentliches Bier
genehmigt, der sollte am 19. September
keinesfalls das jährlich stattfindende
Festival „Sonne im Glas“ verpassen.
Dabei handelt es sich um das größte
Kleinbrauerei-Festival der Welt und es
findet im Brauereihof Purkmistr im Pilsner
Stadtteil Černice statt.
Das Bier gehört überhaupt zu Pilsen wie
das Salz zur Suppe. Daher geht man der
Pilsner-Urquell-Brauerei alljährlich zum
Geburtstag gratulieren. Die Geburtstagsfeier
– das Pilsner Fest (Foto 3, 4)– findet
dieses Jahr am 3. Oktober statt. Das
Bier wird wieder in Strömen fließen, für
Unterhaltung sorgen zahlreiche bekannte
Bands wie Monkey Business, Xindl X,
Michal Hrůza und viele andere mehr.
Wer kein Freund solcher Großveranstaltungen mit Hunderten von Gästen ist und
lieber in einem guten Restaurant essen
geht, hat in Pilsen ebenfalls zahlreiche
Möglichkeiten. Hier gibt es eine rekordverdächtige Zahl an Restaurants, kleinen
Kneipen, Bars, Cafés und Konditoreien.

Katedrála sv. Bartoloměje 1 se
pyšní nejvyšší kostelní věží v Čechách –
měří 102,6 metru. Z jejího vyhlídkového
ochozu ve výši 65 metrů uvidíte celé
město jako na dlani.
Renesanční radnici 2 z roku 1558
zdobí četná sgrafita. V přízemí, v místnosti za mázhauzem, si můžete prohlédnout model historického jádra města
v měřítku 1:200. V sousedním Císařském domě sídlí Informační centrum
města Plzně.
Plzeňská madona na hlavním oltáři
katedrály patří mezi nejkrásnější české
gotické sochy. Východní stranu katedrály kryje z vnější strany kovaná barokní
mříž zdobená hlavičkami andělíčků –
mezi nimi se nachází tzv. andělíček pro
štěstí. Poznáte ho snadno, je celý oblýskaný, a když jej pohladíte a budete si
něco přát, určitě se vám to splní.

Moderní kašny ve třech rozích náměstí jsou dílem architekta Ondřeje
Císlera. Zobrazují heraldické figury
z městského znaku – anděla, velblouda a chrtici. Ve čtvrtém rohu náměstí
se nachází morový sloup z roku 1681
s barokní replikou plzeňské madony
na vrcholu.
Celé náměstí je doslova zhmotnělou
učebnicí architektury. Vedle gotické katedrály tu stojí domy renesanční, barokní,
secesní, funkcionalistické i reprezentující architekturu druhé poloviny 20. století. Na jižní straně náměstí se zachovaly
renesanční domy s kamennými portály.
V jednom z nich sídlí i Muzeum loutek
3 . Pamětní desky připomínají například pobyt vojevůdce Albrechta z Valdštejna či císaře Rudolfa II.
Z jižního rohu náměstí je vidět Velká
synagoga 4 . Jedna z největších
synagog na světě pojme více než tisíc lidí. Postavena byla v roce 1892
v maursko-románském stylu.
Ulicí B. Smetany dojdeme kolem barokního kostela sv. Anny 5 a klasicistní budovy Studijní a vědecké
knihovny Plzeňského kraje 6
(dříve kláštera dominikánek) k tzv.
Brance v empírovém stylu, postavené
na pozůstatku gotické městské brány.
Za ní už se rozprostírá nádherný městský sadový okruh založený v polovině
19. století na místě zbořených městských hradeb. Odtud můžeme po pravé straně spatřit novorenesanční budovu Velkého divadla 7 .

V Kopeckého sadech poutá pozornost
Měšťanská beseda 9 , nejvýznamnější společenské centrum Plzeňanů.
Historická budova skrývá nádherné
secesní sály a secesní kavárnu.
Ve spodní části Kopeckého sadů se
vyplatí odbočit Františkánskou ulicí
k františkánskému klášteru, jenž patří
mezi nejstarší stavby ve městě. Dnes
zde sídlí Muzeum církevního umění plzeňské diecéze 10 .
gotických pušek. V Šafaříkových sadech nepřehlédněme drobné sousoší
plzeňských „rodáků“ Spejbla a Hurvínka, nejznámějších českých loutek.

patří k nejrozsáhlejším v Čechách
a jeho specialitou je ohromné množství studní.
Procházku centrem města můžeme
stylově zakončit v Pražské ulici v nejznámější plzeňské pivnici U Salzmannů. Dům s původním renesančním bosovaným portálem nese jméno
formana Martina Salzmanna, který
v roce 1842 dovezl první várku Prazdroje do Prahy.
Proluku v sousedních Křižíkových sadech zdobí největší český velkoplošný
obraz – tzv. Theatrum Mundi 12
s námětem významných plzeňských
osobností.
Podél Proluky s pozůstatky městských
hradeb dojdeme až k Masným krámům 13 . Gotická stavba je dnes
výstavní síní Západočeské galerie. Ze
sousedního Pražského mostu je jedinečný pohled na romantickou Mlýnskou strouhu. Někdejší vodní náhon
má dnes podobu půvabného jezírka.
Naproti Masným krámům stojí středověká vodárenská věž.
Perlovou ulicí projdeme do ulice Veleslavínovy k Pivovarskému muzeu

Jen deset minut chůze od centra se
nachází světoznámý pivovar Plzeňský Prazdroj 15 . Od Pivovarského muzea pokračujeme okolo hotelu

čtyřproudou komunikací do Štruncových sadů. Za podchodem zabočíme
doprava. Kolem rekonstruované budovy secesní Sokolovny a po lávce přes
řeku dojdeme do pivovaru.

Heart of the City
The Madonna of Pilsen on the main
altar of the cathedral belongs among the
most beautiful Czech Gothic sculptures.
The eastern side of the cathedral is
protected by a Baroque grille, decorated
by the heads of the angels, including the
angel that brings happiness – you will find
him easily as his head is quite worn since
the legend has it that if you touch his head
and say a wish, your wish will be fulfilled.
Modern fountains in the three corners
of the square have been designed by the
architect Ondřej Císler. They represent
three heraldic figures from the city’s
coat-of-arms, namely an angel, a camel
and a greyhound. In the fourth corner
of the square there is a plague pillar
of 1681 with the Baroque replica of the
Pilsen madonna on top.

The Renaissance town hall 2 of 1558
is decorated by numerous sgraffiti. Check
out the 1:200 model of the historical centre
on the ground floor, just behind the great
hall. The neighbouring Emperor House
is the home to the Information Centre of
the City of Pilsen.
The whole square is something like a
textbook of architecture. The Gothic
cathedral is neighboured by Renaissance,
Baroque, Secessionist, Functionalist and
late 20th century buildings. On the south
side of the square you will find Renaissance
houses with stone portals. One of these
houses the Museum of the Puppets
3 . Plaques on the houses commemorate
the stay of Adalbert of Wallenstein and
the Emperor Rudolph II among others.
You cannot start a tour of Pilsen anywhere else than in the Republic
Square. With its 193 x 139 metres, it was one of the largest Gothic
squares in the Central Europe at the time when the city was founded.
The Great Synagogue 4 can be seen
from the southern corner of the square.
With capacity of over 1,000 people, it
belongs among the largest synagogues in
the world. It was built in 1892 in MoorishRomanesque style.
Bedřich Smetana street will take us past
the Baroque Church of St Anna 5 and
the Classicist building of The Education
and Research Library of the Pilsener
Region 6 (formerly a Dominican Cloister) to the so-called Gate, built in the
Empire style on the place of the former
Gothic City Gate. Behind it you will find
a large municipal park, established in
the mid-19th century in the place of the
former city walls. From here, you can see
the neo-renaissance building of the Big
Theatre on the right 7 .
Above the Art Noveau hotel Slovan, inside
the block of houses in Smetanovy sady
park, there is the Old Synagogue 8
built in 1859.
Kopeck ý ’s Park is prominent with
Měšťanská beseda 9  , the most
important cultural venue for the citizens
of Pilsen. The historical building includes
Art Noveau hall and café.
a unique Municipal Armoury with a great
collection of Gothic guns. Don’t miss the
statues of Spejbl and Hurvínek, the
most famous Czech puppets and Pilsen
“natives”, in the nearby Šafařík’s Park.
The vacant site in Křižík’s Park is worth
mentioning for the largest painting in the
Czech Republic, the so-called Theatrum
mundi 12 depicting imporant people
from Pilsen’s history.
Along Proluka with the remains of the
city walls we will reach Masné krámy
13 . This Gothic building serves today as
the exhibition hall to the Gallery of West
Bohemia. The neighbouring Prague
Bridge offers a unique vista on Mlýnská
strouha (Mill-race) which has been
transformed into a romantic lake. The
mediaeval water tower is situated just
opposite Masné krámy.
Perlová Street will take us to Veleslavín’s
Street to the Brewery Museum 14 . It is
the world´s only museum of its kind, based
directly in the brewery house. Besides
the tour dedicated to the development
of brewery from the ancient times to
the present, you can visit the historical
underground of Pilsen. This convoluted
labyrinth of corridors, cellars and wells
was built from the 14th century. It belongs
among the vastest in the Czech Republic
and contains numerous wells.
A tour of the city can be – quite appropriately – concluded in the Prague
Street, in the most famous Pilsen pub
U Salzmannů. A house with the original
Renaissance embossed portal bears the
name of the wagoner Martin Salzmann
who brought the first supply of Pilsner
Urquell to Prague in 1842.
In the lower part of Kopecký’s Park
take the Franciscan Street toward the
Franciscan Monastery, one of the oldest
buildings in the city. Today it houses the
newly opened Museum of the Church
Art of the Pilsen Bishopric 10 .
We return back and continue towards the
Museum of West Bohemia 11 boasting

If you want to visit the worldwide famous
Pilsner Urquell brewery 15 , you can
continue from the Brewery Museum past
the hotel Courtyard by Marriott to Mlýnská
strouha and then take the underpass
under the four-lane road to Štrunc’s Park.
Take right after the underpass and go
along the reconstructed Art Nouveau
Sokolovna building, take the bridge over
the road and you should reach the brewery
in ten minutes.

Die sog. „Baulücke“ (Proluka) im benachbarten Křižík-Park ziert das größte
tschechische Fassadenbild – das sog.
Theatrum Mundi 12 , das wichtige
Pilsner Persönlichkeiten zeigt.

Ein Rundgang durch Pilsen kann nirgendwo anders beginnen als
auf dem Platz der Republik. Dieser war mit einer Fläche von
193 x 139 m zur Zeit seiner Erbauung einer der größten gotischen
Plätze Mitteleuropas.
Die unmittelbar auf dem Platz befindliche
St.-Bartholomäus-Kathedrale 1 kann
sich des höchsten Kirchturms in ganz
Böhmen rühmen – er ist 102,6 Meter
hoch und von seiner 65 Meter hohen
Aussichtsplattform kann man die ganze
Stadt überblicken.
Die Pilsner Madonna am Hauptaltar der
Kirche zählt zu den schönsten gotischen
Skulpturen in Böhmen. Die Ostseite der
Kathedrale ist außen von einem barocken, mit Engelsköpfen geschmückten
Metallgitter bedeckt, darunter befindet
sich auch der sog. Glücksengel. Wenn
Sie ihn streicheln und sich dabei etwas
wünschen, geht es bestimmt in Erfüllung.
Die modernen Springbrunnen an drei
Ecken des Platzes sind ein Werk des
Architekten Ondřej Císler. Sie zeigen
heraldische Figuren aus dem Pilsner
Stadtwappen: einen Engel, ein Kamel und
einen Windhund. In der vierten Ecke des
Platzes steht eine Pestsäule aus dem
Jahr 1681, an deren Spitze eine barocke
Replik der Pilsner Madonna zu sehen ist.
Ebenfalls auf dem Platz befindet sich
das mit zahlreichen Sgraffiti verzierte
Renaissance-Rathaus 2 aus dem Jahr
1558. Im Erdgeschoss des Gebäudes, in
einem Raum hinter dem Maßhaus, kann
man ein Modell des historischen Stadtkerns im Maßstab 1:200 bewundern.
Gleich nebenan, im Kaiserhaus, hat das
Informationszentrum der Stadt seinen Sitz.
Der ganze Platz ist quasi ein materialisiertes Architekturlehrbuch: Neben der
gotischen Kathedrale finden sich Renaissance-, Barock- und Jugendstilhäuser,
funktionalistische Gebäude wie auch
Bauwerke aus der zweiten Hälfte des
20. Jahrhunderts. Auf der Südseite sind
einige Renaissancehäuser mit Steinportalen erhalten geblieben. In einem davon
ist das Puppenmuseum 3 ansässig.
Vom südlichen Ende des Platzes aus ist die
Große Synagoge 4 zu sehen. Sie wurde
1892 im maurisch-romanischen Stil erbaut
und gehört mit einem Fassungsvermögen
von mehr als tausend Menschen zu den
größten Synagogen der Welt.
Durch die Bedřich-Smetana-Straße
gelangt man, vorbei an der barocken
St.-Anna-Kirche 5 und dem klassizis-
tischen Bau der Wissenschaftlichen
Bibliothek der Region Pilsen (einem
früheren Dominikanerinnenkloster) 6 , zur
sog. Branka, einem auf den Überresten
des gotischen Stadttors errichteten
Empire-Gebäude. Dahinter beginnt das
wunderschöne städtische Parkgelände,
das Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts anstelle
der abgerissenen Stadtmauern angelegt
wurde. Von hier aus ist rechterhand das
im Neorenaissancestil erbaute Große
Theater 7 zu sehen.
Oberhalb des Jugendstilhotels Slovan
verbirgt sich im Innenhof eines Hauses
in der Straße Smetanovy sady 5 die Alte
Synagoge 8 aus dem Jahr 1859.
Im Kopecký-Park zieht das wichtigste
gesellschaftliche und kulturelle Zentrum
der Pilsner, das ehemalige bürgerliche
Vereinshaus Měšťanská beseda 9 ,
die Blicke auf sich. In dem historischen
Gebäude befinden sich bezaubernde
Jugendstilsäle und ein Jugendstilcafé.
Vom unteren Teil des Kopecký-Parks
aus lohnt sich ein Abstecher in die
Františkánská ulice zum Franziskanerkloster, das zu den ältesten Bauwerken
der Stadt gehört. Heute hat dort das neu
eröffnete Museum für Kirchenkunst
der Diözese Pilsen 10 seinen Sitz.
Kehren wir nun zum Ausgangspunkt
unseres Abstechers zurück und setzen
wir unseren Rundgang in Richtung des
Westböhmischen Museums 11
fort. Dieses beherbergt u.a. die Städtische Rüstkammer mit einer europaweit
bedeutsamen Sammlung gotischer
Flinten. Im Šafařík-Park sticht eine
kleine Skulpturengruppe ins Auge, die
zwei „gebürtige“ Pilsner zeigt: die wohl
bekanntesten tschechischen Puppen
Hurvínek und Spejbl.
Vorbei an der „Baulücke“ mit Überresten
der Stadtmauer begeben wir uns zum
gotischen Gebäude der Fleischbänke
(Masné krámy) 13 , das heute als
Ausstellungssaal der Westböhmischen
Galerie dient. Von der benachbarten Prager
Brücke aus bietet sich ein einzigartiger
Blick auf den romantischen Mühlgraben
(Mlýnská strouha). Der ehemalige
Wassergraben hat heute die Form eines
schönen kleinen Sees. Gegenüber den
Fleischbänken steht der mittelalterliche
Wasserturm.
Durch die Perlová ulice gehen wir zum
Brauereimuseum 14 in der VeleslavínStraße. Dieses Museum ist als weltweit
einziges seiner Art in einem ehemals
brauberechtigten Haus untergebracht.
Neben einem Besichtigungsrundgang
zur Geschichte des Brauereiwesens
kann man von hier aus auch die Pilsner
historischen Keller besichtigen. Dieses
aus verzweigten Gängen, Kellern und
Brunnen bestehende Labyrinth wurde
ab dem 14. Jahrhundert unter der Stadt
errichtet. Es gehört zu den größten unterirdischen Kellersystemen in Böhmen
und seine Besonderheit besteht in einer
außergewöhnlich großen Zahl an Brunnen.
Unseren Bummel durch das Stadtzentrum können wir stilvoll im bekanntesten
Pilsner Bierlokal U Salzmannů in der
Pražská ulice beenden. Das mit einem
originalen Renaissance-Bossenportal
versehene Haus trägt den Namen des
Fuhrunternehmers Martin Salzmann, der
1842 die erste Ladung Pilsner Urquell
nach Prag brachte.
Wer noch die weltberühmte PilsnerUrquell-Brauerei 15 besichtigen will,
kann vom Brauereimuseum aus vorbei
am Hotel Courtyard by Marriott zum
Mühlgraben (Mlýnská strouha) und
dann durch eine Unterführung unter einer
vierspurigen Straße zum Štrunc-Park
gehen. Nach der Unterführung muss
man rechts abbiegen und gelangt, vorbei
am rekonstruierten Jugendstilgebäude
Sokolovna (Turnhalle) und über eine
kleine Brücke, nach ca. zehn Minuten
zur Brauerei.

Představují regionální historii i různé zajímavosti a kuriozity. Možností pro cestování v čase je tedy mnoho. Zpestřit si tak
můžete třeba zimní lyžování na Šumavě.
Šumava ve skle
Šumava se řadí k nejstarším oblastem sklářské výroby v českých zemích
a první písemné zmínky pocházejí z poloviny 14. století. V Železné Rudě, v původní vilce sklářského rodu Abele, se
nachází jedna ze stálých expozic Muzea
Šumavy. Jejím základem je rodinný majetek a rodinné sbírky Abelů. Vystavené sklo představuje v převážné většině
produkci abelovských hutí. Najdete tu
však i připomínku hamernictví nebo šumavský svéráz, umrlčí prkna. Na nich se
uchovávali nebožtíci, kteří zemřeli během zimy, kdy nebylo možno do zmrzlé
země pochovávat.
Šumava hořící
Světoznámou výrobu zápalek v Sušici, kterou roku 1839 zahájil Vojtěch
Scheinost s manželkou, přibližuje expozice Muzea Šumavy v Sušici. Expozice

prezentuje historii sušického sirkařství
od počátků až po dnešní dobu. K vidění je tu však také unikátní mechanický
betlém (foto 1) se třemi stovkami pohyblivých i statických postav, expozice věnovaná historii nebo procházka
šumavským sklářstvím. Vystaven je tu
také takzvaný sušický cínový poklad.
Jde o původní majetek měšťana Adama Čecha, který jej ukryl, když prchal
z Čech po Bílé hoře. Nalezen byl až
ve 30. letech 20. století.
Šumava židovská
Šumava byla po staletí územím, na němž
vedle sebe a spolu žili křesťané a židé.
Až do nástupu Adolfa Hitlera k moci
v tom nikdo neviděl problém. Pak se ale
svět změnil. Na Šumavě zaniklo 110 židovských komunit. Dnes je připomíná
stálá expozice v Muzeu dr. Šimona Adlera v Dobré vodě u Hartmanic. Seznámíte
se tu s běžným životem židovské rodiny,
obvyklými profesemi, které židé vykonávali, nebo s jejich sakrálními předměty.

Traditional crafts, puppets, art, glass, architecture – all of this and
much more you can see during the coming cold season in the
museums of the Pilsen region. Let the present to its fate for a while
and look into the times long past.
The Pilsen region boasts eighty museums.
They represent regional history and various
issues of interest as well as curiosities.
Thus there are many opportunities for
travelling in time. You can use these to
enrich your skiing in the Böhmerwald.
Böhmerwald in Glass
The Böhmerwald belongs among the
oldest areas of glassmaking in the Czech
Republic, with the first written records
dating to mid fourteen century. Železná
Ruda, in the original villa of the Abele
glass-making family, houses one of the
permanent exhibitions of the Museum of
the Böhmerwald. It consists mainly of the
family property of Abele family and the
family collections. The glass on display
is, to a large extent, the glass produced
by Abele’s glassworks. However, you will
find here also a memory of folk crafts and
the local peculiarity – the death board.
These served to keep dead bodies of
those who died in winter when it was
not possible to bury them in the ground.
Böhmerwald on fire
The worldwide famous production of
matches in Sušice, started in 1839 by
Vojtěch Scheinost with his wife, is presented by the exhibition of the Museum
of the Böhmerwald in Sušice. It shows the
history of Sušice matchmaking since the
very beginning to the present. On display
is also a unique mechanical nativity scene
(photo 1) with three hundred moving and

hier viele. Und auch Ihren Skiurlaub im
Böhmerwald können Sie auf diese Weise
abwechslungsreich gestalten.
Der gläserne Böhmerwald
Der Böhmerwald gehört zu den ältesten
Glasherstellungsgebieten der böhmischen
Länder, erste schriftliche Erwähnungen
stammen aus der Mitte des 14. Jahrhunderts. Eine der Dauerausstellungen des
Böhmerwaldmuseums befindet sich in
der Stadt Železná Ruda im ursprünglichen
Landhaus der Glasherstellerfamilie Abele.
Den Grundstock der Ausstellung bilden der
Familienbesitz und die Sammlungen der
Abeles. Die ausgestellten Glasexponate
stammen größtenteils aus der Produktion
der Abele’schen Glashütten. Man findet
hier jedoch auch Ausstellungsstücke,
die an das Hammerschmiedehandwerk
erinnern, oder eine Eigenart des Böhmerwalds, die Totenbretter. Auf diesen wurden
die Körper von im Winter Verstorbenen
aufgebahrt, die man in der gefrorenen
Erde nicht begraben konnte.
Der brennende Böhmerwald
Über die weltberühmte, 1839 von Vojtěch
Scheinost und dessen Gattin gegründete
Zündholzfabrik in Sušice kann man in einer
Ausstellung des Böhmerwaldmuseums
Sušice Näheres erfahren. Die Ausstellung
präsentiert die Geschichte der Sušicer
standing figures, an exhibition dedicated
to history or a presentation of glassmaking in the Böhmerwald. You can see the
famous tin treasure of Sušice here. It is
the property of the burgher Adam Čech
who hid it when he was fleeing Bohemia
after the Battle of the White Mountain. It
was not found until the 1930s.
The Jewish Böhmerwald
For centuries the Böhmerwald had been
a region where Christians and Jews lived
side by side. Until the arrival of Adolf
Hitler to power, this was not seen as a
problem. But then the world changed. A
hundred and ten Jewish communities
ceased to exist in the Böhmerwald. Today
these are remember by the permanent
exhibition of the Museum of Dr. Šimon
Adler in Dobrá Voda near Hartmanice. It
present everyday life of Jewish families,
usual jobs that the Jews did and their
sacred objects.

Zündholzproduktion von den Anfängen
bis zur Gegenwart. Zudem kann man hier
eine einzigartige mechanische Weihnachtskrippe mit dreihundert beweglichen
und statischen Figuren bewundern, eine
Geschichtsausstellung besichtigen oder
sich auf einem Rundgang die Glasherstellung der Region zu Gemüte führen.
Ausgestellt ist hier zudem der sogenannte
Sušicer Zinnschatz (Foto 1). Dabei handelt
es sich um den ehemaligen Besitz des
Bürgers Adam Čech. Dieser versteckte
den „Schatz“, als er nach der Schlacht am
Weißen Berg (1620) aus Böhmen fliehen
musste. Wiederentdeckt wurde er erst in
den 30er Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts.
Der jüdische Böhmerwald
Der Böhmerwald war jahrhundertelang
ein Gebiet, in dem Christen und Juden
neben- und miteinander lebten. Bis zum
Machtantritt Adolf Hitlers sah darin
niemand ein Problem. Dann jedoch
änderte sich die Welt. Im Böhmerwald
verschwanden 110 jüdische Gemeinden.
Dieser wird heute mit einer Dauerausstellung im Dr.-Simon-Adler-Museum
in Dobrá voda bei Hartmanice gedacht,
wo man sich mit dem Alltagsleben einer
jüdischen Familie, den traditionell von
Juden ausgeübten Berufen wie auch mit
jüdischen Sakralgegenständen vertraut
machen kann.
