The Romanian Market for Herring Roe
In 2013 Romania’s total imports of fish and fishery products were of 55.278 mil EUR and ca. 35,40
million tonnes. Of these, the imports originating from the EU represent 75% in value and 50% in
volume.

Herring is imported in small quantities, mainly frozen and mostly from the EU. Of the 7.220 tonnes
of imported frozen herring, 97% were from the EU, at a value of 6,05 million EUR.
In general, there are very few quantities of herring roes imported as individual item/as such. The
majority of roes used by industry are the “by-products” of the frozen herring that is imported for
processing (e.g. smoking or marinating). On average, the roes make up to 8-10% of the weight of a
herring and their quality is subject to the season when herring was captured.
There are a few business that import herring roes directly, mainly frozen and to a lesser extend
salted. An example is the Association of Romanian Importers and Processors which imports ca. 50
tonnes of frozen herring roes per year.
In general roes are used for the preparation of salads, a product that is quite popular with the
Romania consumers. However these prefer products made with roes originating from local fresh
water fish (e.g. carps, pike - Esox lucius). For the preparation of salads, (herring) roes may be mixed
with vegetable oil, other smoked fish, onion, vegetables, etc. On average, in the processing industry,
16-20 kg of salad can be obtained from 1 kg of herring roes.
The consumption of fish and fish products in Romania is quite low, estimated at 5,5
kg/inhabitant/year (source: FAO, quantity tin live weight). The great majority of fish and fish

products are sold by hyper-and supermarkets chains. There is no information regarding the
consumption of roes and/or roe products/salads.
In retail/supermarkets, roes are either sold 1) raw/salted, or under the form of 2) roe
salads/prepared. A research in four supermarkets chains Kaufland, Carrefour, Selgros, Auchan, and 2
cities, Bucharest (capital, ca. 2,0 million inhabitants) and Iasi (350.000 inhabitants, the most
important town in the eastern side of the country) revealed the following products and prices.
Salted roes
This product is bought for further preparation at home. It is sold either pre-packed in 100 g plastic
packaging or in bulk (at the fresh-fish counter).
Prices were EUR/kg 6,03 – 7,82 (27-35 RON/kg), in bulk; EUR/kg 8,93 (40 RON/kg) - 100 g packing);
EUR/kg 11,17 (50 RON/kg) - 80 g packing, salt content: 14%.
For comparison, prices for other salted fish roes were: capelin –EUR/kg 20,10 (90 RON/kg); carp –
EUR/kg 17,87 – 22,11 (80-99 RON/kg).
Roe salads
These are sold under a large variety of combinations, with different proportions of other fish, roes,
vegetables, oil, spices, etc.
Prices vary from EUR/kg 2,23 – 6,25 (10 to 28 RON/kg), depending on the producers,
seller/supermarket, product (e.g. roe content).
