Immanuel News October 2013 Celebrating Christ’s abundant presence in our lives, neighborhood and world. Blessing of the Animals Saturday, October 12 10:00 am You are invited to bring your pets and working animals on Saturday, October 12 at 10 am for a very special Blessing of the Animals. Animals If your pet cannot be brought, then bring a photo. And if the animal who cares for you and loves you is a stuffed animal, you may also bring him/her. We gather to ask God’s blessing on the animals and to give thanks for their presence in our lives. Once again Providence Hospice is our co-sponsor. The Blessing Animals tradition finds its roots in St. Francis of Assisi who loved all creatures and called them his brothers and sisters. Francis wrote a canticle in praise of God’s living things. “All creatures of our God and King, lift up your hearts and with us sing.” There are many wonderful stories of Francis and the birds and animals. Francis (c.1181-1226) of Assisi in Italy, the son of a wealthy cloth merchant, renounced his wealth and future inheritance and devoted himself to serving the poor. Francis described this act as being “wedded to Lady Poverty.” Under his leadership the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans) was formed, and they took literally Jesus’ words to his disciples that they should take nothing on their journey and receive no payment for their work. There task in preaching was to “use words if necessary.” The commemoration day of St. Francis (Oct 4) has been a traditional time to bless pets and animals, creatures Francis called his brothers and sisters. Last year the parish hall was full of neighborhood folks and pets. It’s a great time to bring a neighbor or colleague, or just come and connect with the neighborhood. Please join us with your pets (or on your own) on Saturday, October 12. We’ll have treats for everyone—humans and animals. Come join us for an early bird breakfast! 4th Annual Benefit Breakfast Thursday, October 17, 2013 7:30-9:00 am Please RSVP by October 14 Guest Speaker: Bill Hobson Executive Director, Downtown Emergency Services It’s our major fund raiser for the year. Thursday Evening Book Discussion October 3—24 at 7:00 pm “Love Wins”: A book about Heaven, Hell, and the Leader: Susan Burchfield Join us as we explore our longing and need for holy time that re-connects us. We’ll check out the biblical foundations and hear about the Jewish tradition of Sabbath. We’ll consider the traditions and practices that make up a Sabbath way of life that assists us in restoring our relationship with God, our self, our neighbor and all of creation. Throughout this year we’ll also consider Sabbath and Creation, Sabbath economics, Peacemaking, Justice, Prayer and Spirituality, and close the year by reflecting together on living and dying. In the relentless busyness of modern life, we have lost the rhythm of work and rest. . . .And for want of rest, our lives are in danger. . . . A “successful” life has become a violent enterprise. We make war on our own bodies, pushing them beyond their limits; war on our children, because we cannot find enough time to be with them when they are hurt and afraid, and need our company; war on our spirit, because we are too preoccupied to listen to the quiet voices that week to nourish and refresh us; war on our communities, because we are fearfully protecting what we have, and do not feel safe enough to be kind and generous; war on the earth, because we cannot take the time to place our feet on the ground and allow it to feed us, to taste its blessings and give thanks. — Wayne Muller, Sabbath Oct 20 fate of every person who ever lived By Rob Bell Join us in a four week discussion on a book that challenges us to look at some fascinating and sometime troubling questions in the context of a loving and generous God. Who is the good news for? How do we talk about heaven and hell? What about God's judgment? What does the Bible say? Many people have painful church stories from their past. Often, these stories come from what they have experienced as God's judgment, and about what they were told about heaven and hell. And many of these people leave the church. At Immanuel, we proclaim that the good news is most truly for all. Let's use this imaginative and provocative book to guide conversations about what the "good news for all" means for us - - and how to talk about this to the world around us. Books can be found in local book stores or ordered from amazon.com, or other on-line retailers. We also have a few copies of the book for people to borrow if you are unable to pick up one for yourself. (Talk to Kathy Strand, Iain Quigley or Pastor Susan). Please sign up on the clip board after worship or call the church office, so we can know how many to plan for. Open Door Ministries - SAVE THE DATE! When: Saturday, at 5:30 to 9:00 pm, November 2, 2013. Who: Open Door Ministries (ODM) annual auction. Where: Brockey Center at South Seattle Community College, 6000 16th Ave SW, Seattle, 98106 What: This enjoyable evening includes a full meal, an opportunity to participate in a silent and live auction, wine or beer available for purchase and information regarding ODM. John Lahti purchases a table for ten, but as you know nothing is free, so he asks for a donation up to $70 per person (entirely tax deductable) (check payable to Open Door Ministries). For the past several years the table has been populated by folks from Immanuel and hopefully it will be again this year. ODM is a ministry serving the people within the NW Lutheran Synod. Its mission initially was a ministry to AIDS/HIV persons. This ministry continues and has expanded for GLBT persons that request guidance for acceptance to a supportive congregation and/or consultation regarding their spiritual questions. ODM relies on individual donations and principally upon the auction for its annual funding (approximately $75,000.). John can be contacted at 206.409.0089, or by email to [email protected]. Thank you for your consideration. Immanuel--let’s walk around Greenlake to raise funds to alleviate hunger! CROP Walk is our Family Servant Event for this fall. Following worship on Oct. 6, we’ll see a video, have lunch together, and then walk, ride, push strollers around the lake. Let’s fill a table! 4 Immanuel Story Corp Among Our Members— Members— John Lahti Williams Welcome Saturday, October 19 2:00 to4:00 pm John Lahti is a retired postal inspector, who worked in Greenville, SC; Seattle; and Anchorage, AK; before returning to Seattle for his last posting. Lahti is a shortened form of the Finnish name meaning Bay. Immanuel Church Council invites us to join in an afternoon event to welcome the residents of Williams Apartments to the neighborhood. The Williams Apartments building borders on the south side of Immanuel’s parking lot and is the new home for around 80 people who have moved from homelessness to permanent housing, including 40 veterans. After returning to Seattle, his wife Sue and daughter Mia, began looking for a Lutheran Church near their home. They ended up at Immanuel after searching further up Capitol Hill. They came to Immanuel in the spring of 1989 when Bill Coffman was Pastor. We’ll gather in the parish hall to play games, enjoy ice cream sundaes and get acquainted. It’s an event for all ages. Before long John was elected to the Church Council and later became involved with the bookkeeping for both Immanuel and ICS. After retirement he became involved with the building, fixing, fixing, fixing. There are several ways we can participate. • come to the party • bring a game and host a game table (something everyone can enjoy doing together like Pictionary) • bring a topping for sundaes • provide hospitality—welcoming and greeting • help to set up • help to clean up Today he is a “Real Weekend Duffer.” A few weeks ago, he had a second hip replacement and is up and running again. His daughter Mia is teaching English in South Korea. Thus John makes a trip or two a year to visit her. John has seen many changes in the neighborhood from small houses to high-rise buildings and the pea-patch. He has enjoyed the commitment, dedication and integrity of both the people in the congregation and on staff. All are willing to get involved in the volunteer work it takes to maintain and retain the historic nature of the building. Sign up to participate at Sunday worship or call the church the church office. For more information talk to Kevin Johnsen (206-619-3172) or Kathleen Seymour (206 -930-6468). Let’s give our new neighbors a warm welcome and have fun together on a Saturday afternoon. John enjoys coming to church and seeing that the congregation is growing. No longer does one know everyone really well. Come November 1st, John will become a snowbird and head off to Arizona, until the 1st of May, where the sun shines all the time and he can pick oranges, lemons and grapefruit from trees in the yard starting in January. We said farewell to our summer Executive Intern, Vivian, and to our Pantry Assistant, Scott. We’ve refinished the floors in the Parish Hall and the gym. We’ve moved a couple of the men in our Recovery Program next door to the Williams Apartments. We’ve distributed pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables through our Food Bank and we served our traditional August Community Lunch MEATLOAF to all who came through our doors. We participated in the South Lake Union and the Cascade Block Parties. Whew! Our breakfast is an important opportunity for ICS to introduce new people and new businesses to our organization. Please help us carry out that tradition by inviting someone new to sit with you at the breakfast. Reservations are required. Please call Candi Olson at (206) 6221930 or email her at [email protected]. Hope to see you all there! Blessings, Patty Turnberg Executive Director Immanuel Community Services Gratitude Dinner So far this fall, we’ve hosted a Gratitude Dinner to thank folks who made gifts to our Restroom Renovation Campaign and we thank our volunteer chef, Peggy Haug, for a delicious dinner. We also hosted a team from Horizon House on United Way’s Day of Caring and watched them joyfully cook and serve a hot breakfast (sausage, pancakes, fruit, eggs, potatoes, etc.) to a hungry crowd at our Hygiene Center. Then we watched as they prepared a delicious ham dinner and left it for the men in our Recovery Program to enjoy. At the end of the day, they left tired and satisfied as they saw first-hand, how much their efforts were appreciated.
