Liebe Leserinnen und Leser des ham.airport magazine,
Fliegen ist ein ganz persönlicher Luxus für mich: endlich einmal ungestört Zeitung lesen oder ein ausgedehntes Nickerchen machen. Als Geschäftsfrau und vierfache Mutter findet man sonst keine Zeit dazu.
Eine meiner nächsten Reisen führt endlich einmal wieder zu meinen Eltern nach Seattle. Sie feiern dieses
Jahr ihren 45. Hochzeitstag, ein Großereignis, das ich mir nicht entgehen lasse. Aber zu Hause bin ich in
Hamburg. Besonders schön ist hier der Frühling mit all seinen Farben. Was ich an der Hansestadt schätze, sind die Menschen. Sie haben einen tollen Humor und eine angenehme Art: funny, sarcastic and
smart. Auch meine Firma bellybutton ist hier zu Hause. Die 25 Frauen, die mit uns im Unternehmen arbeiten (und der eine Mann im Außendienst), sind alle genau wie diese Stadt, in der wir leben: humorvoll, selbstbewusst, unkompliziert. Für Familien ist Hamburg einfach ideal.
Meine Kinder sind große Fans vom Tierpark Hagenbeck. Mit größeren kann man tolle Fahrradtouren ins Alte Land unternehmen. Aber hin
und wieder mache ich auch gerne einen Wochenendtrip weiter weg. Ich habe schon mehrfach vorgehabt, Budapest zu besuchen. Ich habe
gehört, dass es eine tolle Stadt sein soll, die eine besondere Mischung aus Tradition, Kultur und Moderne vereint. Der nächste Wochenendtrip geht vielleicht dorthin. Natürlich starte ich dann wieder vom Hamburg Airport.

For me, flying is a very personal luxury: finally, I have a moment to read the newspaper undisturbed, or to take a prolonged nap. As a mother
of four and a businesswoman, this is the only chance I get. One of my upcoming journeys will take me back to my parents in Seattle again –
at last. They are celebrating their 45th wedding anniversary this year, a major event that I am not prepared to miss. But Hamburg is my home.
With all its many colours, spring here is especially beautiful. What I appreciate in this city are the people. They have a great sense of humour
and a pleasant manner: funny, sarcastic and smart. My company, “bellybutton”, is at home here, too. The 25 women who work with us in the
company (and the one man, a sales representative), are all just like this city that we live in: humourous, confident, straightforward. For families, Hamburg is simply ideal. My children are big fans of Hagenbeck’s Zoo. And if the children are a little older, you can do great bicycle tours
in Altes Land with them. But now and again I do like to have a weekend away. I have planned to visit Budapest several times. I have heard that
it is a fantastic city, with a very special mixture of traditional culture and modernity. Maybe my next weekend trip will be there. And of course,
as always, I will fly from Hamburg Airport.

he average Hamburg resident consumes some 21 litres of
wine every year, whilst a Hungarian manages some 30 litres. It is little wonder – the country has a winegrowing tradition that stretches back almost a thousand years. Today, more
than 90,000 hectares are dedicated to viticulture – although Germany trumps this with around 100,000 hectares. And what very
few people know: grapevines are even grown in Hamburg. The
hosts of the Stuttgarter Weindorf festival gave the vines to the city,
and they were planted at Stintfang, above the St Pauli wharves.
Christel Currle, from the Fritz Currle vineyard in Stuttgart-Uhlbach, looks after the processing. “We have been doing this here
for 13 years. After the harvest, the grapes are transported to Uhlbach, where they are pressed and bottled. We present the bottled
wine to the city council each year at the opening of the Hamburg
branch of the wine festival. Bottles are only retrieved from the
treasury of the Hamburg City Hall on special occasions, to be presented to foreign dignitaries.”
Although the Stuttgarter Weindorf is very popular with northern
Germans, the Budapest International Wine Festival is much larger.
Ten thousand wine enthusiasts throng the ancient Buda Castle,
part of the Budapest UNESCO World Heritage Site. Laria Marina
Király-Hegedüs, a native of Hamburg, has lived in Budapest with
her Hungarian husband for the past 13 years. She also recommends a visit to the wine event, and has a tip for visitors: “Make
sure you keep the glass you are given. It can be refilled at every
stand! And in the evening, you should take a stroll through Budapest’s Castle District. The hill, with its ancient Matthias Church
and the fairy-tale Fisherman’s Bastion, offers fantastic views over
the city and the Danube.”

und 21 Liter Wein genießt ein Hamburger im Jahr, ein
Ungar kommt da schon auf etwa 30 Liter. Kein Wunder,
blickt das Land doch auf eine beinahe tausendjährige Weinbautradition zurück. Auf über 90.000 Hektar wird der edle Tropfen
heute angebaut, was Deutschland allerdings mit rund 100.000
Hektar übertrumpft. Und die wenigsten wissen: Sogar in Hamburg
wird Wein angebaut. Die Wirte des Stuttgarter Weindorfs schenkten der Hansestadt die Reben, die am Stintfang oberhalb der St.
Pauli-Landungsbrücken angepflanzt wurden. Christel Currle vom
Wein- und Sektgut Fritz Currle aus Stuttgart-Uhlbach kümmert sich
um die Verarbeitung: „Wir machen das jetzt seit 13 Jahren. Die
Trauben werden nach der Ernte nach Uhlbach transportiert, gekeltert und abgefüllt. Wir überreichen die Flaschen im Rahmen der
Eröffnung des Hamburger Weindorfs alljährlich wieder an die Bürgerschaft. Sie werden nur zu besonderen Anlässen aus der Schatzkammer des Hamburger Rathauses geholt und an ausländische
Staatsgäste verschenkt.“ Auch wenn das Stuttgarter Weindorf bei
den Norddeutschen sehr beliebt ist – das Budapester Internationale Wein- und Sektfestival ist weitaus größer. Zehntausend Weinfans
tummeln sich dann rund um die altehrwürdige Burg Buda, die die
UNESCO zum Weltkulturerbe erklärte. Die Hamburgerin Laria
Marina Király-Hegedüs lebt seit 13 Jahren mit ihrem ungarischen
Mann in Budapest. Auch sie empfiehlt einen Besuch des Weinevents und hat noch einen Tipp: „Das Glas, welches man in die
Hand bekommt, sollte man unbedingt behalten. Es kann an jedem
Stand neu gefüllt werden! Und abends sollte man noch einen Spaziergang durch das Budapester Burgviertel machen. Von dem Berg
mit der altehrwürdigen Matthiaskirche und der märchenhaften
Fischerbastei bietet sich ein traumhafter Blick über die Stadt und
die Donau.“

Like the Elbe in Hamburg, the river is the city’s main attraction.
Most attractions are situated along its banks, e.g. the city’s landmark, the Chain Bridge, the university, Margaret Island, Gellért
Hill with the Gellért Baths, and the Parliament building, one of the
world’s largest buildings. The building forms the majestic backdrop for the Red Bull Air Race (photo p.9), to be held this year on
19 and 20 August. Aerobatic aircraft fly between two pylons at
speeds of up to 370 km/h, performing various manoeuvres in the
process. If you want to experience something similar in Hamburg,
make a note in your diary of the “Hafengeburtstag” port festival,
from 7 to 9 May, 2010. The world’s largest port festival includes
not only ships but also historic aircraft, modern helicopters and
parachutists – all in all, a breathtaking show (photo p.8).
Laria Marina Király-Hegedüs misses the port more than anything.
“I fly to Hamburg twice a year to visit my brother, and I love the
sight of the big ships and the Elbe beach, the air that sometimes
smells like the sea, and the tasty herring served at the ‘Zur Elbkate’ restaurant.” She has an insider tip for dining out in Budapest, too: “You simply have to try the marrowbone soup in Kehli
Vendéglö.” For families, the mother of two recommends a trip on
the Children’s Railway or a visit to the Budapest Art Fair. Artistic
delights of a somewhat different kind are offered by the Sziget
Festival in Budapest. In 2009, the festival will feature bands
including Die Toten Hosen, Placebo, Snow Patrol and The
Offspring – all of whom have played at the Hurricane Festival in
Scheeßel, northern Germany, in recent years. In 2009, the exuberant crowds at the Sziget Festival will also be reminded of the
fall of the Berlin Wall twenty years ago. In cooperation with the
German Embassy, a new wall is being constructed – to function
not as a border, but as a common projection area for artists from
all over the world.

die Kettenbrücke – Wahrzeichen der Stadt –, die Universität, die
Margareteninsel, der Gellért-Berg mit dem Gellért-Bad sowie das
Parlamentsgebäude, eines der größten Gebäude der Welt. Vor dieser majestätischen Kulisse findet am 19. und 20. August das Red
Bull Air Race statt (Foto S. 9). Dabei fliegen die Kunstflugzeuge mit
bis zu 370 km/h zwischen zwei Pylonen hindurch und führen verschiedene Manöver aus. Wer dergleichen in Hamburg erleben
möchte, sollte sich den Hafengeburtstag vom 7. bis zum 9. Mai
2010 als Termin merken. Beim größten Hafenfest der Welt bieten
neben den Schiffen auch historische Flugzeuge, moderne Helikopter und Fallschirmspringer eine atemberaubende Show (Foto
S. 8). Den Hafen vermisst Laria Marina Király-Hegedüs am meisten. „Wenn ich zweimal im Jahr nach Hamburg fliege, um meinen
Bruder zu besuchen, dann genieße ich den Anblick der großen
Pötte, den Elbstrand, die Luft, die manchmal nach Meer riecht, und
den leckeren Matjes in der Elbkate.“ Auch für Budapest hat sie
einen kulinarischen Geheimtipp: „Unbedingt probieren sollte man
die Markknochensuppe im Kehli Vendéglö.“ Familien empfiehlt die
zweifache Mutter eine Fahrt mit der Kindereisenbahn oder einen
Besuch der Budapest Art Fair. Kunstgenuss der etwas anderen Art
verspricht das Musikfestival Sziget in Budapest. 2009 rocken hier
Bands wie Die Toten Hosen, Placebo, Snow Patrol oder The
Offspring die Bühne – sie alle waren übrigens in den vergangenen
Jahren schon im norddeutschen Scheeßel auf dem Hurricane-Festival zu Gast. Und 2009 wird auch auf dem Sziget-Festival im ausgelassenen Getümmel der Feiernden des Falls der Berliner Mauer
vor 20 Jahren gedacht. In Zusammenarbeit mit der deutschen Botschaft wird eine neue Mauer errichtet, die allerdings nicht zu einer
Grenze, sondern zu einer gemeinsamen Projektionsfläche für
Künstler aus aller Welt werden soll.

Hungarian Medicine –
Made in Hamburg

ir sind in Wahrheit ein Stück Ungarn“, sagt stolz Dr. Jörg
Weidenhammer �, Geschäftsführer der Asklepios Medical School. Im September 2008 eröffnete die Zweitniederlassung der Budapester Semmelweis Universität in Hamburg
ihre Pforten �. Studenten der medizinischen Fakultät, die das Physikum in dem 1983 eingeführten, deutschsprachigen Studiengang
in Budapest absolviert haben, können ihr Studium jetzt in der Hansestadt fortsetzen. Sie nehmen nicht nur an einem europaweit einzigartigen Projekt teil, sie schlagen dadurch eine Brücke zwischen
der Stadt an der Elbe und der Stadt im Tal der Donau.

Steffen Oehler from Augsburg and Bernhard Lamprecht from
Cologne are amongst the first 18 students to transfer from Budapest to Hamburg for the winter semester 2008/2009 �. And
more will follow: the Asklepios Medical School has places for up
to 42 students per year. Why medicine? Steffen’s grandfather and
father are both doctors. He had a free hand when it came to choosing a career, but it did not take him long to decide. Medicine was
always Bernhard’s goal, too. Why Semmelweis? “From the beginning, we were put into small groups and had a lot of contact
with patients. The internship directors are always there to answer
whatever questions we may have. Anatomy is taught for four
semesters, longer than is normal in Germany,” Steffen Oehler
explains. This practical relevance and the close cooperation
between students and teaching staff are, according to Dr Weidenhammer, major advantages of the university, and the Asklepios
Medical School is focussing intensely on this type of training, just
as is done in Budapest.
Steffen Oehler aus Augsburg und Bernhard Lamprecht aus Köln
gehören zu den ersten 18 Studierenden, die zum Wintersemester
2008/2009 aus Budapest nach Hamburg wechselten �. Und es
werden noch mehr folgen – die Asklepios Medical School bietet bis
zu 42 Studenten pro Jahrgang Platz. Warum Medizin? Steffens
Großvater und Vater sind Ärzte. Er selbst hatte bei der Berufswahl
zwar freie Hand, musste aber nicht lange überlegen. Medizin war
auch schon immer Bernhards Ziel. Warum Semmelweis? „Wir wurden von Anfang an in kleine Gruppen aufgeteilt und hatten sehr
früh Patientenkontakt. Die Praktikumsleiter stehen immer für alle
Fragen zur Verfügung. Anatomie wird vier Semester lang gelehrt,
hier in Deutschland ist es meist weniger“, erklärt Steffen Oehler.
Der Praxisbezug und die enge Zusammenarbeit zwischen Studierenden und Dozenten sind laut Dr. Weidenhammer große Vorteile
dieser Universität, und die Asklepios Medical School möchte diese
Art der Ausbildung wie in Budapest intensiv pflegen.
Budapest und Hamburg haben viele Gemeinsamkeiten. „Ab April
findet das Leben in Budapest auf der Straße statt“, so Dr. Weidenhammer. „Ganze Straßen bestehen nur aus Tischen und Stühlen“,
stimmt der 22-jährige Steffen zu. Das warme Kontinentalklima
Ungarns und eine geringe Niederschlagsmenge tragen zweifellos
dazu bei. Hamburg entwickelt sich auch langsam in diese Richtung.
Sichtbar ist das z.B. in der Langen Reihe in St. Georg oder auf dem
Schulterblatt in der Sternschanze, wo Straßencafés und multikulturelle Vielfalt besonders bei jungen Hamburgern beliebt sind. Dr.
Weidenhammers Lieblingsstraße in Budapest ist die Ráday utca �.
Diverse Architekturstile, Bars und Restaurants prägen ihr Erscheinungsbild. Sein Lieblingslokal: Costes �. Vorzügliches Essen wird
hier zu Jazz-Klängen serviert. Bernhard Lamprecht wohnte in der
Parallelstraße zur Ráday und lernte, die Mannigfaltigkeit sowie den
internationalen Charakter des Viertels zu schätzen. „Doch das
nächtliche Studentenleben spielt sich in Szenelokalen wie z.B. dem
Szimpla ab, dessen Atmosphäre am ehesten der Hamburger Schanze entspricht“, so der 24-Jährige. Steffens und Bernhards Geheimtipp: Der Blick vom Gellért-Hügel auf das illuminierte Budapest �.
Dr. Weidenhammer schwärmt wiederum von kleinen Antiquariaten
in der Nähe der Ráday utca und von dem Schuhhändler Laszlo Vass,
dessen handgefertigte Schuhe einen internationalen Ruf haben �.
Das Besondere an Familie Vass ist jedoch ihre umfangreiche Sammlung der modernen Kunst, denn sie finanzieren das Unterstützungsprogramm für Nachwuchskünstler Ungarns. Man merkt: „Budapester und Hamburger verbindet ein großer Stolz auf ihre Stadt. Beide
halten sie für die schönste der Welt und beide haben gute Argumente dafür“, so Dr. Weidenhammer.

n reality, we are a part of Hungary,” says Dr Jörg Weidenhammer �, Managing Director of the Asklepios Medical School,
proudly. In September 2008, the second branch school of Budapest’s Semmelweis University opened its doors in Hamburg �.
Students of the medical faculty, having completed the preliminary
medical examination in the German-speaking medicine course in
Budapest, introduced in 1983, are now able to continue with their
studies in Hamburg. They are not only participating in a project
that is unique for Europe, they are also building a bridge between
the city on the Elbe and the city on the Danube.
Budapest and Hamburg have many things in common. “From
April, life in Budapest takes place outside on the street,” says Dr
Weidenhammer. “Whole streets consist of nothing but tables and
chairs,” 22-year-old Steffen agrees. Hungary’s warm continental climate and a low rainfall undoubtedly play a role in this street culture. Hamburg is slowly developing in the same direction. It can be
seen, for example, on Lange Reihe in St Georg and on Schulterblatt
in Altona, where the street cafés and multicultural variety are very
popular, especially with younger Hamburg residents. Dr Weidenhammer’s favourite street in Budapest is Ráday utca �, characterised by a variety of architectural styles and by bars and restaurants.
His favourite pub: Costes �, where exquisite food is served to the
sounds of jazz. Bernhard Lamprecht lived in a street parallel to
Ráday and learned to appreciate the diversity and the international
character of the neighbourhood. “But the student nightlife mostly
takes place in scene pubs such as, for example, Szimpla, where the
atmosphere is most like Hamburg’s Schanze district,” says the 24year-old. Steffen and Bernhard’s insider tip: the view over the lights
of Budapest from Gellért Hill �. Dr Weidenhammer, on the other
hand, enthuses over the small second-hand bookstores near Ráday
utca, and over shoemaker Laszlo Vass, whose handmade shoes
have an international reputation �. Most notable about the Vass
family, however, is its extensive collection of modern art; the family
provides financial support to Hungary’s next generation of artists.
It is plain to see that “locals of Budapest and Hamburg are united
by a great pride in their cities. Both think they have the world’s
most beautiful city, and both have good arguments to support their
case,” says Dr Weidenhammer.

fernen Horizont Sonne und fremde Kulturen. Zwei Wochen Ferien. Von Hamburg
nach Bangkok. Sawasdee Thailand!

weeks of holidays. From Hamburg to
Bangkok. Sawasdee Thailand!
M
it fiebrigen Temperaturen um die 40 Grad begrüßt uns die
10-Millionen-Metropole und hält uns mit ihren gewaltigen
Armen eng umschlungen. Fast bleibt uns die Luft weg.
Inmitten dieser fremden Welt mit nie gesehenen Schriftzeichen und
einem Sprachklang, der in so gar keiner Weise an Vertrautes erinnert, liegt unser Hotel, die Villa Cha Cha nahe der Travellermeile
Khao San. Hier kann alles gebucht, besorgt, gekauft und organisiert
werden, hier versteht fast jeder Englisch. Draußen vor der Tür liegt
der unbekannte Gigant Bangkok mit Garküchen, Gerüchen und
Geräuschen. Krung Thep Mahanakhon, die Stadt der Engel, wie
Bangkok gern übersetzt wird, zieht uns in ihren Bann.
Wir besuchen den majestätischen Großen Palast und Wat Phra
Kaeo, die wohl opulenteste Tempelanlage der thailändischen Hauptstadt. Hier, wo einst die Königsfamilie residierte, ragen reich verzierte, gigantische Figuren und Tempel aus Gold mit Mosaiken, Perlmutt und Marmor vor uns auf. „Woah!“, bringt es David auf den
Punkt. „Mami“, sagt Caesar „das ist ja wie ein Traum!“ Die Jungs
dürfen Lotusblüten und Räucherstäbchen für Buddha niederlegen.
Die kinderfreundlichen Thailänder zeigen unseren siebenjährigen
Zwillingen, wie es gemacht wird, und Caesar zeigt uns in einer
Ruhepause die Lotusblüte als Yoga-Figur. Ob uns Thailand gefällt,
möchte eine junge Studentin für Tourismus wissen, und was man
besser machen könne. Uns fällt gerade so gar nichts ein. Ihre Kommilitonen haben inzwischen die Kinder entdeckt. Helle Haut finden
die Thai so erstrebenswert wie wir gebräunte Haut. Helle Augen,
helles Haar, das ist ungewöhnlich in Thailand. Die Jungs haben
weder Scheu noch Berührungsängste. Warum auch? Nie ist jemand
aufdringlich. Immer respektvoll. Wir grinsen übers ganze Gesicht
im Land des Lächelns. Alles in Thailand erscheint uns einfach. Wer
freundlich fragt, dem wird geholfen. Ich verliere meine Kamera und
finde sie am nächsten Tag wieder. Die Frau eines Verkaufsstandes in

he city of 10 million greets us with feverish temperatures of
around 40 degrees, embracing us tightly in its mighty arms.
It leaves us almost breathless. In the middle of this foreign
world, with an alphabet we have never seen and a spoken language
that sounds like nothing we have ever heard before, is our hotel, the
Villa Cha Cha near the tourist strip of Khao San. You can book, buy
and organise anything and everything here, and amost everyone
understands English. Outside the door lies the unknown giant,
Bangkok, with its cookshops, smells and noises. Krung Thep
Mahanakhon, the “City of Angels” – as Bangkok is often translated –
draws us into its spell.
We are standing in Wat Phra Kaew, most opulent of the Thai capital’s temples, within the majestic Grand Palace. Here, where the
royal family once resided, giant golden figures and temples, richly
decorated with mosaics, marble and mother of pearl, tower before
us. “Woah!” exclaims David, hitting the nail on the head. “Mummy,”
Caesar says, “this is like a dream!” We allow the boys to lay lotus
blossom and incense sticks for Buddha. The child-loving Thais
show our seven-year-old twins how it is done, and during a break,
Caesar shows us the lotus blossom as a yoga fig-ure. A young tourism student wants to know whether we like Thailand, and “what
could be done better”. We cannot really think of anything. Her fellow
students have noticed the children. Thais find pale skin as desirable
as we do tanned skin. Light-coloured eyes and fair hair are uncommon in Thailand. The boys are neither shy nor reserved. And why
should they be? Nobody is ever pushy here. They are always respectful. We smile from ear to ear in this, the Land of Smiles. Everything
seems easy in Thailand. If you ask in a friendly way, you will be
helped. I lose my camera – and find it again the next day. The
woman at a stall in Khao San Road has kept it for me. We happily
zoom from temple to temple by taxi and sail in a long-tail boat along

wir im Taxi von Tempel zu Tempel, mit dem Longtailboot schippern
wir durch die Kanäle – die Klongs – zum Jim-Thompson-House. Mit
dem Tuk-Tuk düsen wir nach Chinatown und Little India. Warum in
der Hitze lange zu Fuß gehen, wenn ein Taxi gerade mal 80 Cent
kostet? Wir genießen allesamt eine Stunde Thai-Massage und
fühlen uns danach total entspannt und wie neugeboren. Wir staunen über die Architektur thailändischer Teakholzhütten und einen
omnipräsenten Regenbogen an Farben: kleine Stände mit grüner
Limonade und pinkfarbenen Plüschtieren, lilafarbene Orchideen,
schneeweiß blühende Frangipani-Bäume, die knallbuntesten Taxis
der Welt. Sogar die Wochentage tragen hier Farbe.
Nach vier Tagen buntem Treiben in Bangkok nehmen wir den Zug
zweiter Klasse und fahren über Nacht in frisch gemachten, weißen
Bettlagern südwärts zur grünen Palmeninsel Samui. Hier lacht die
Sonne vom strahlend blauen Himmel. Im New Hut am Lamai
Beach finden wir eine schlichte Hütte am Strand: Bett, Dusche, Toilette plus Schöpfeimer, kleine Veranda, das war’s. Bevor wir die
Jungs fragen können, ob es ihnen hier gefällt, sind die schon im
Wasser. Glückliche Kinder. Was brauchen die hier mehr als das Meer
vor der Tür? Unsere einfache Behausung kostet ca. 10 Euro die
Nacht. Die Ruhe unter Palmen und die Sonnenaufgänge sind ja so
viel mehr wert.
Ko Samui hat noch mehr zu bieten. Wir entscheiden uns für einen
Besuch des Big Buddha. Riesig thront er am oberen nordöstlichen
Zipfel der Insel und schaut gelassen den Flugzeugen hinterher.
Buddhistische Glocken und ein Riesengong hängen hier, und jeder
darf sie ertönen lassen. Die Kinder nehmen das Angebot freudig an.
Mönche beschenken die Jungs mit weißen Glücksarmbändern.
Einer der Mönche bittet uns sogar, mit seinem Handy ein Foto von
Caesar, David und sich zu machen. Die heiligen Männer sind hier so

along to Chinatown and Little India on a tuk-tuk. Why take a long
walk in this heat when a taxi only costs 80 cents? We all enjoy an
hour-long Thai massage, after which we feel totally relaxed, as if
reborn. We are amazed by the architecture of Thai teak cabins – and
by the ubiquitous rainbow of vibrant colours: small stands with
green lemonade and pink soft toys, purple orchids, the snowy white
blossom of frangipani trees, and the world’s most colourful taxis.
Even the days of the week have assigned colours here.
After four days of the colourful hustle and bustle of Bangkok, we
take a second-class overnight train journey, sleeping between fresh
white sheets in a sleeping car, to the green palm island of Samui in
the south. The sun smiles down at us from a bright, blue sky. At
New Hut on Lamai Beach we find a simple bungalow on the beach:
bed, shower, toilet complete with water bucket for the well, a small
verandah, and that’s it. Before we have the chance to ask the boys if
they like it here, they are already in the water. Happy children. What
more do they need here than the sea at our doorstep? Our simple
accommodation costs around 10 euros per night. Resting under the
palm trees, enjoying the sunrises, is worth so much more.
Koh Samui has a great deal more to offer. We decide to visit the Big
Buddha. Imposingly enthroned at the northeastern tip of the island,
he gazes at the departing aircraft. Buddhist bells and a huge gong
hang here for anyone to play. The children are delighted to take up
the offer. Monks present the boys with lucky white bracelets. One of
the monks even asks us to take a photo of him together with Caesar
and David, using the camera in his mobile phone. The holy men here
are not closed to the world. So unusual. So impressive. Caesar’s new
favourite colour is orange, and one day he wants to be a monk.
We move to the outstanding Zazen Boutique & Spa hotel on Bo
Phut Beach, where we plan to celebrate the twins’ 8th birthday. The

weltoffen. So ungewöhnlich. So beeindruckend. Caesars neue Lieblingsfarbe ist Orange, und irgendwann will er Mönch werden.
Wir ziehen um in das ausgezeichnete Boutique & Spa Hotel, das
Zazen am Bophut Beach. Hier wollen wir den 8. Geburtstag der
Zwillinge feiern. Der Tag beginnt mit einer Geburtstagskokosnuss
und einem Sprung in den Pool. Danach schwingen wir uns bei
einem Ausflug auf mächtig große Elefanten mit stoppeligen Haarborsten und schaukeln so durch das Innere der Insel. Die Mahout,
die Tierpfleger, erlauben den Jungs sogar, ganz vorn zwischen den
Elefantenohren zu sitzen. Was für ein Geburtstag! Am Abend nach
einem perfekten Dinner im hoteleigenen Restaurant und einer überraschenden Geburtstagstorte schicken Caesar und David thailändische Glücksballons mit ihren Wünschen in den sternenklaren Himmel. Was die beiden sich wohl wünschen?
Zehn Tage sind wir jetzt unterwegs. Zehn Tage in einer fernen Welt,
die uns gar nicht mehr fremd erscheint. Zehn Tage haben wir unseren Alltag zu Hause komplett vergessen, doch der Zug Richtung
Norden wartet bereits. Er fährt uns bis nach Ayutthaya, dem alten
siamesischen Regierungssitz. Ein riesiges Stadtareal mit beeindruckenden Tempelanlagen und ehrwürdigen Buddhastatuen.
Schwarzverkohlte, mächtige Steinbuddhas sind in orangefarbene
Tücher gehüllt, selbst die Türme tragen Orange. Frangipani-Bäume
haben ihre weißen Blüten auf den Boden fallen lassen. Banyanbaumwurzeln halten schützend Buddha umschlungen. Und über
allem liegt ein seidenes Tuch der Ruhe. Made in Thailand.
Unsere Reise neigt sich dem Ende. Wir wollen den Großen Palast
und den Wat Phra Kaeo noch einmal sehen, noch einmal staunen,
den Duft der Räucherstäbchen genießen und versuchen, uns an den
Lotusblüten sattzusehen, diesen wunderschönen Blumen, die uns
immer an diese Reise erinnern werden. Für uns ist Thailand eine
Lotusblüte: perfekt bereits auf den ersten Blick und doch noch voller
bunter, einzigartiger Überraschungen. Kophun Thailand. Danke.
day begins with a birthday coconut and a dip in the pool. Afterwards, we swing up onto huge elephants with stubbly, bristly hair for
an excursion through the interior of the island. The mahout, the animals’ keepers, even let the boys ride up front between the elephants’ ears. What a birthday! In the evening, after a perfect dinner
in the hotel restaurant and a surprise birthday cake, Caesar and
David release Thai lucky balloons into the starry sky, carrying their
wishes with them. I wonder what they have wished for...
We have been travelling for ten days now. Ten days in a distant world
– a world that no longer seems so foreign. For ten days, we have
completely forgotten about our every day life at home. But the train
to the north is waiting for us already. It takes us to Ayutthay, the old
Siamese centre of government, where the vast old city is dominated
by impressive temples and venerable Buddha statues. Imposing
black stone Buddhas are wrapped in orange cloths, and even the
towers are draped in orange. The white blossoms of the frangipani
trees lie on the ground. Banyan tree roots hold Buddha in their protective embrace. And a silken cloth of peace lies over it all. Made in
Thailand.
Our journey is coming to an end. We want to see the Grand Palace
and Wat Phra Kaew one more time, once more be amazed, savour
the aroma of the incense sticks and try to see enough lotus blossoms to satisfy our craving for these beautiful flowers, which will
always remind us of this trip. For us, Thailand is a lotus blossom:
perfect at the very first glance, and full of unique, colourful surprises. Kophun Thailand. Thank you.

en sicheren Hafen als Festangestellte verlasse ich nach
neun Jahren, um neue Wege zu erforschen und meinem
Herzen zu folgen. Ich plane zuerst die Reise meines Lebens:
Los geht es von Hamburg nach Dubai und in den Oman, weiter
nach Kuala Lumpur und Singapur. Zum Programm gehören auch
Laos, Kambodscha und vor allem Thailand. Dort möchte ich mich
als ehrenamtliche Englischlehrerin in einem Bergdorf und als Helferin in einem Elefantenpark engagieren. Die Rettung vernachlässigter
und misshandelter Elefanten liegt mir besonders am Herzen.
Anfang April treffe ich im Elephant Nature Park in der Nähe von
Chiang Mai im Norden Thailands ein. Die Gründerin Sangduen
Chailert, von allen Lek genannt, widmet ihr Leben den grauen Riesen. Ihre Liebe zu den Tieren begann mit einem Elefantenbaby, das
ihr Großvater – ein traditioneller Heiler – als Bezahlung erhielt.
Nun hat sie es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, ehemaligen Arbeitselefanten zu helfen, ihnen eine glücklichere Zukunft ohne Leid zu
ermöglichen. „Ich werde bis ans Ende meines Lebens um das Wohl
der Elefanten kämpfen“, so die leidenschaftliche Tierliebhaberin.
Alle 35 Elefanten im Park haben eine traurige Vergangenheit. Max,
der kurz nach meiner Reise leider starb, wurde in Bangkok von
einem 16-Tonner angefahren, als er Touristen Obst und Gemüse
verkaufen musste. Dass sein rechtes Bein dabei gebrochen wurde,
sah man ihm noch an. Tränen rinnen über meine Wangen, als ich
in einem Film erfahre, auf welche grausame Weise der Wille von
Elefantenbabys gebrochen wird, damit sie lernen, dem Menschen
zu gehorchen, um später das zu tun, wofür sie gar nicht geboren
wurden: malen oder Fußball spielen. Im Elefantenpark haben sie
die Chance, sich von solchen Misshandlungen und Verletzungen
zu erholen. Es ist eine Freude, zuzusehen, wie diese Tiere wieder
neuen Lebensmut fassen und übermütig im Sand spielen. In den
nächsten Tagen ist körperlicher Einsatz angesagt. Mit anderen Helfern aus aller Welt mache ich die Unterkünfte der Dickhäuter sauber und reinige deren Wasserstelle. Lisa aus Australien ist schon
das zweite Mal hier „und das für ganze vier Wochen, weil die Arbeit
hier so erfüllend ist“, betont sie. Dass ich jeden Tag im Dreck
wühle und der Schweiß in Strömen fließt, wird in der Tat zur
Nebensache. Die härteste Arbeit der Woche erwartet mich in einem
riesigen Maisfeld außerhalb des Parks, wo Hunderte von Maispflanzen geschnitten und auf den LKW geladen werden. Der volle
Truck reicht, um die Elefanten mit einem einzigen Abendessen zu
versorgen. Die zehn Prozent ihres Gewichts, die sie täglich verspeisen, müssen ja irgendwo herkommen. Doch die Anstrengung wird
belohnt: Während der Rückfahrt liege ich unter blauem Himmel auf
dem Maisberg, Gefühle von Stolz und Zufriedenheit stellen sich
ein, und ich fühle mich frei wie der warme Wind, der in mein
Gesicht weht.

leave the safety of permanent employment, after nine years in the job, to
explore new paths and follow my heart.
First, I plan the journey of my life: from
Hamburg, I travel to Dubai and Oman,
then on to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. My itinerary also includes Laos,
Cambodia and, in particular, Thailand.
There, I want to work as a voluntary
English teacher in a mountain village,
and as a helper in an elephant park.
Rescuing neglected and mistreated elephants is particularly close to my heart.
At the beginning of April, I arrive at the Elephant Nature Park near
Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. Founder Sangduen Chailert,
known by everyone as Lek, has dedicated her life to the grey
giants. Her love for the animals began with a baby elephant which
her grandfather – a traditional healer – received as payment. She
has set herself the task of helping former working elephants by
offering them a brighter future, one without suffering. “I will fight
for the elephants’ welfare as long as I live,” declares the passionate animal lover. Every one of the 35 elephants in the park has a
sad past. Max, who sadly died shortly after my visit, was run over
by a 16-tonne truck in Bangkok when he was being forced to sell
fruit and vegetables to tourists. You could still see that his right
leg had been broken at the time. My eyes fill with tears when I
watch a film showing the cruelty with which a baby elephant’s will
is broken to teach the poor animal obedience to humans, so that
it will later do things it was never born to do – painting, for example, or playing football. In the elephant park they have the chance
to recover from such injuries and mistreatment. It is a real joy to
see the animals discover a new lease of life and play, carefree, in
the sand. The next few days call for physical work. Together with
other helpers from all over the world, I clean the elephants’ homes
and wash their watering places. Lisa, from Australia, is here for
the second time, “and for a whole four weeks, because the work
here is so fulfilling,” she emphasises. The fact that I spend the
whole day digging around in muck, with sweat streaming off me,
does indeed become completely incidental. The hardest work of
the week is waiting for me in a vast cornfield outside the park,
where hundreds of cornstalks have to be cut and loaded into the
truck. The full truck is enough to feed the elephants for just one
evening. The ten percent of their body weight that they eat every
day has to come from somewhere. But the effort is rewarded: for
the return journey, I lie on a mountain of corn under a blue sky;
feelings of pride and satisfaction take hold, and I feel free in the
warm wind that is blowing in my face.
Besondere Freude macht es, die Elefanten zu füttern und mit ihnen
zu baden. Ihnen dabei den borstigen Kopf und den verdreckten
Rücken zu schrubben, lässt Glücksgefühle aufkommen. Auf dem
Programm stehen außerdem eine wunderschöne Wanderung mit
den grauen Riesen durch die Berge und der Besuch einer Schule
zur Förderung des interkulturellen Verständnisses. Es bleibt genügend Zeit, um die Tiere zu beobachten und hautnah zu erleben,
wie sie hier aufblühen. Besser als jede Kinovorstellung ist es, aus
nächster Nähe zuzusehen, wie die Rüsseltiere sich gleich nach
dem Baden den Rücken mit Sand bewerfen, um sich vor Sonne
und Moskitos zu schützen, wie sie im Schlamm an der Wasserstelle fröhlich planschen, oder wie das neunmonatige Elefantenbaby
Unfug anstellt.
It is particularly enjoyable to feed the elephants and to bathe with
them. Scrubbing their bristly heads and filthy backs can bring a
feeling of genuine happiness. The programme also includes a
wonderful walk with the grey giants through the mountains and a
visit to a school, to encourage intercultural understanding. Plenty
of time remains to observe the animals and to experience, closeup, how they flourish here. It is better than any cinema experience,
to see this at first hand: elephants throwing sand over their backs
as soon as they have bathed, to protect themselves from the sun
and the mosquitoes; elephants splashing about playfully in the
mud at the watering place; a nine-month-old baby elephant getting up to mischief.
Am Ende meiner Zeit im Elefantenpark blicke ich auf eine unvergessliche Woche voller Emotionen und Glücksmomente zurück.
Ich bin meinem Herzen gefolgt und bin dabei nicht nur den Elefanten, sondern auch mir ein Stückchen nähergekommen.

unforgettable week full of emotions and happy moments. I have
followed my heart, and in doing so I have not just drawn closer to
the elephants, but also to myself.

Paolo Guerrero referiert im Pflegeheim über
das Internet, Bastian Reinhardt ist Schirmherr des Projekts „Zweikampfverhalten“ –
meine Liste nimmt kein Ende. Wenn man
sich vor Augen führt, wie sich die HSVJungs sozial engagieren, könnte man meinen, sie betrieben Fußball nur nebenbei.
Hintergrund ist die vom HSV ins Leben
gerufene Initiative „Der Hamburger Weg“,
mit der Hamburgs Ansehen als Sportstadt
und der Gemeinschaftssinn der Hanseaten
gestärkt werden sollen. Unter der Schirmherrschaft des Ersten Bürgermeisters Ole
von Beust setzen die Profis ihre Kompetenzen für den guten Zweck ein. Neben Spaß
an der Sache haben die Spieler eine Vorbildfunktion und sollen Hamburger darin
bestärken, selbst einen Beitrag für die Stadt
und ihre Mitmenschen zu leisten. Konkret
gesprochen: Im Rahmen des Gemeinschaftstages fischten die Profis z.B. ein

zur Integration beitragen kann, das performten Jerome Boateng & Co. mit
Schülern der Hip Hop Academy bei ihrem
Hamburger-Weg-Rap. Die gesammelten
Spenden wurden für den Musikunterricht in
Kitas eingesetzt. Und wie sollte es anders
sein, auch Lotto King Karl macht sich stark
für seine Stadt und geht den Hamburger
Weg – nicht nur dann, wenn’s mal wieder
heißt: „Hamburg, meine Perle“.

My list could go on. When you consider the
community work done by the HSV boys,
you could easily imagine that football is just
a pastime, just something on the side.
The background for all this is the initiative
“Der Hamburger Weg”, launched by HSV
to enhance Hamburg’s image as a sports
city and to strengthen the city’s community
spirit. Under the patronage of the Governing Mayor, Ole von Beust, the footballers
use their skills for a good purpose. The programme is fun and gives the players a role
model function, aiming to encourage Hamburg residents to make their own contribution to the life of the city and their fellow
residents. A concrete example: on a community day, the players fished a bicycle out
of the Alster. This shows the importance of
treating the environment with respect – and
that the boys take the initiative seriously.
“Get involved yourself” is the motto. Bastian Reinhardt was working towards the
same goal when he showed the next generation of players how to behave with fairness on the pitch. His advice is also intended to help youth deal with their family and

made a musical contribution to integration
when they performed the Hamburger Weg
Rap with students from the Hip Hop Academy. The donations received were used to
pay for music lessons in kindergartens.
And, of course, Lotto King Karl is also showing his commitment to his city, joining in
on the Hamburger Weg – and not just by
singing “Hamburg, meine Perle”.

Blomen und der Sternschanze liegen die futuristisch anmutenden Gebäude. „Die Innenstadtlage ist einmalig in Deutschland.
Neben der hervorragenden Erreichbarkeit und der Nähe zu Hamburgs Attraktionen ist es vor allem die Integration in das großstädtische Leben, die den Standort auszeichnet“, betont Bernd Aufderheide, Vorsitzender der Geschäftsführung. So kann man nach dem
Messebesuch noch einen Kaffee in einem der gemütlichen Cafés
trinken, shoppen im Karolinenviertel und in den Japanischen Gärten von Planten un Blomen entspannen. „370 Millionen betrug das

gebaut wurden u.a. sieben Hallen, eine haushoch verglaste Loggia,
Parkplätze und Logistikflächen, die rund zwei Kilometer LKW-Stau
von Hamburgs Straßen holen“, erzählt Bernd Aufderheide. Investitionen, die sich gelohnt haben.

The futuristic-looking buildings are set in the very heart of
the city, between the Planten un Blomen park and the
Sternschanze quarter. “This downtown location is unique in Germany. The site is outstandingly easy to reach and very close to
Hamburg’s attractions. This, combined with the integration into
the life of the city, makes the location so special,” says Bernd Aufderheide, CEO. After visiting a trade fair, plenty of options are

passieren kann, wenn ein Vogel das Rollfeld im falschen Moment
überquert: „Wenn z.B. eine Krähe beim Starten mit einer Maschine
zusammenprallt, ist das für die großen Flugzeuge nicht weiter
schlimm, sie haben höchstens eine Beule. So wie beim Auto, wenn
man einen Pfeiler beim Ausparken übersieht. Bei einer kleinen
Maschine kann das schon gefährlicher werden, also verscheuchen
wir sie in den kritischen Zonen.“
Von April bis Juli geht es auf dem Flughafen dennoch tierisch zu.
Unweit der Startbahn, hinter einem kleinen Hügel, hört man es im
Sommer summen. Rund sieben Bienenvölker produzieren hier
ihren Honig. Um zu erfahren, wie es um die Schadstoffe in der Luft
am Hamburger Flughafen steht, wird der Honig in einem unabhängigen Labor untersucht. Aus den Ergebnissen können die Umweltbedingungen am Airport eingeschätzt werden. „Die Bienen wirken

drive the birds away from the critical zones.”
From April to July, though, the non-human population at the airport is all abuzz. During the summer, you can hear them behind a
small hill, not far from the runway: some seven bee colonies at
work, making honey. The honey is sent to an independent laboratory for examination, to find out about pollutants in the air at
Hamburg Airport. The results are used to evaluate the environmental conditions at the airport. “The bees work as ‘biofilters’,”

Richtig ruhig geht es an diesem Nachmittag am Hamburger Flughafen zu. Die üppigen Wiesen rund um die Vorfelder erstrahlen in
saftigem Grün, und vom ungemütlichen Winter ist nichts mehr zu
sehen. Während gut ein Dutzend Flugzeuge gereinigt, mit frischen
Lebensmitteln und Sprit versorgt wird, rollt eine Boeing 777 auf der
Startbahn 23 in Position. Währenddessen ist Forstwirt Markus
Musser in seiner Mission als Jäger auf dem Flughafengelände
unterwegs. Standesgemäß mit jägertypischer Kleidung und Fernglas ausgestattet, macht sich der Familienvater in seinem Geländewagen auf zu den Wiesen rund um die Runways und hält Ausschau

bringing with them a liberal, cosmopolitan world
view, along with the benefits of a world-class international airport – these are all things that we
should value.
What do you personally buy at the airport?
Personally, I like to buy a new suit, shirt or tie. Waiting for my flight, I have the time that I'm otherwise
often missing. I am the archetypal travel shopper!

We have a very harmonious working relationship
and understand each other extremely well. At the
end of the day, we have known each other for a very
long time; we went to school together and spent a
lot of our leisure time together. Within the company, we each have our areas of responsibility, but
we talk about every decision together. A family
business can only work if the family gets along
well, without arguing – and that’s how it is with us!

Neuer DRK-Highloader
Die DRK mediservice gGmbH hat im Januar Europas modernstes
Fahrzeug für die Behinderten- und Krankenbeförderung am Hamburg Airport in Betrieb genommen. Der „Highloader“ erlaubt nicht
nur die bequeme Beförderung von Passagieren mit eingeschränkter
Mobilität, auch kranke Fluggäste können schnell und zuverlässig in
das Flugzeug und aus dem Flugzeug gebracht werden. Sogar der
Transport für Personen, die liegend befördert werden müssen, ist
möglich. Von zwölf Zentimetern bis zu sieben Metern lässt sich der
Hublift ausfahren. Für die Arbeit wurden die Mitarbeiter eine
Woche lang geschult. In die 155-PS-Spezialanfertigung hat das DRK
insgesamt 280.000 Euro investiert. Derzeit sind europaweit nur
vier dieser Fahrzeuge im Einsatz, der Highloader am Hamburg Airport ist das neueste und modernste unter ihnen.

Europe’s most modern vehicle for transporting disabled and ill persons. The “highloader” makes it possible to transport not only passengers with reduced mobility in comfort; sick passengers can also
be brought to or from the aircraft quickly and reliably. It is even possible to transport persons in a recumbent (lying) position. The
hydraulic lift can be extended from twelve centimetres to seven
metres. Personnel were trained for a week to operate the equipment. The 155hp custom vehicle represented a total investment for
the German Red Cross of 280,000 euros. There are currently only
four such vehicles in use across Europe, and Hamburg Airport’s
highloader is the newest and most advanced of them.

Der Künstler Gunter Demnig (Foto) hat im Februar zwei „Stolpersteine“ am Flughafen verlegt. Die Mahnmale aus Messing erinnern
an Dr. Kurt Adams und Carl Nickels, die beide mit ihren Familien
im einstigen Lilienthalblock am Flughafen lebten, bevor sie dem
nationalsozialistischen Regime zum Opfer fielen.
In February, the artist Gunter Demnig (photo) laid two “stumbling
blocks” at the airport. The brass plates are memorials to Dr Kurt
Adams and Carl Nickels, who lived with their families in the former
“Lilienthalblock” apartment buildings on the site of the current airport administration until they fell as victims to the Nazi regime.

The lanes of the old city quarter of Pelourinho fill up with revellers
on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday. For six days, two million
visitors celebrate the worlds largest Carnival. The processions
reveal the intense cultural variety of Brazil’s former capital. Two
thirds of the city’s residents are of African origin; the remaining
third are Portuguese and indigenous Latin American. The African
temperament can be felt in the Capoeira battle dance, which is
often performed in the streets of Salvador. The regional cuisine is
also African in origin, with street stalls selling Acarajé, deep fried
balls made from black-eyed peas, and Moqueca, a seafood stew.
As the most important district in America in terms of baroque
colonial architecture, Pelourinho has been declared a UNESCO
World Heritage Site. A trip on the Elevador Lacerda, a lift linking
the Upper Town and Lower Town, offers a fantastic view over the
city and the port to the white beaches and offshore islets. This
view makes it easy to understand why Brazilians call Salvador de
Bahia the “Capital of Happiness”.

This is how Viennese author Peter Altenberg
described the coffee houses of his hometown – he is even reported to have given the
Café Central (photo p.44, bottom) as his
residential address. To this day, the Viennese
extravagantly celebrate their 300-year-old
coffee house culture. You place your order
with the “Ober” (never say “Kellner” – waiter!) – a coffee and a slice of the traditional
Sachertorte chocolate cake, and study the
newspapers provided for the purpose – for
hours on end, if you wish. The variety of coffee specialties is almost infinite: mocha, mocha with milk, lengthened mocha, melange, café au lait, mocha with whipped cream,
lengthened mocha with rum and whipped cream, inverted coffee…
It is best to ask what the name means before you order. A visit to the
coffee house should be followed with a romantic fiacre trip through
the Old Town – a UNESCO World Heritage site – to St Stephen’s
Cathedral. The most impressive feature of the cathedral, Vienna’s
most distinctive emblem, is the almost 137-metre-high southern
tower, dating from the year 1433, affectionately known to the Viennese as “Steffl”. You don’t have to walk far to see the city’s other
attractions. In the inner city area are the State Opera, the Imperial
Court Theatre, Kärntner Straße – Austria’s busiest pedestrian zone –
and the Hofburg Imperial Palace (photo below). The latter is home
to, amongst other things, the Habsburg treasure chambers (containing the crown of the Imperial House of Austria) and the Sisi Museum. The performances of the noble Lippizaner stallions in the adja-

The neighbouring Imperial Castle Gardens
are not the only proof that Vienna is one of
the world’s greenest cities; the Prater, the
city’s largest park (see photo p. 44), is
almost double the size of Central Park in
New York and three times as the size of Berlin’s Tiergarten. This former imperial hunting
ground consists primarily of meadowlands
with imposing clusters of poplars. Countless
chestnut trees bloom here in the springtime,
and March sees the start of the season in the
adjacent “Wurstelprater” amusement park,
with its famous ferris wheel (photo left). But
Vienna is worth a visit at any time of year. In
July, as part of the summer operetta festival,
Johann Strauss’s “Wiener Blut” is performed
in the Theresianum palace grounds. Also in July, the O-Töne literature festival offers many open-air readings, with free admission, in
Vienna’s Museum Quarter. The stars and celebrities of the film
industry come to the city from 22 October to 4 November for the
Viennale. And Vienna really puts on its finest in winter, when the
aroma of punch and gingerbread wafts over the Christmas market
at Rathausplatz and the classical elegance of the dancing at the Kaiser Ball fills the grand rooms of the Imperial Palace.

„Nicht zu Hause und doch nicht an der frischen Luft.“ So charakterisierte der Wiener Schriftsteller Peter Altenberg die Kaffeehäuser
seiner Heimatstadt – das Café Central (siehe Bild rechts) soll er
sogar als seine Wohnadresse angegeben haben. Noch heute zelebrieren die Wiener ausgiebig ihre 300 Jahre alte Kaffeehauskultur:
Man bestellt beim Ober (bloß nicht „Kellner“ sagen!) einen Kaffee
und ein Stück Sachertorte und studiert die ausliegenden Zeitungen
– oft stundenlang. Schier unendlich ist die Vielfalt an Kaffeespezialitäten: Schwarzer, Brauner, Verlängerter, Melange, Kaffee verkehrt,
Einspänner, Überstürzter Neumann, Fiaker oder Kapuziner. Am
besten fragt man nach, was sich dahinter verbirgt. Nach dem Kaffeehausbesuch geht es romantisch weiter: mit dem Fiaker durch
die zum Weltkulturerbe zählende Altstadt, in deren Zentrum sich
der Stephansdom befindet. Das Wahrzeichen Wiens – von den
Wienern liebevoll „Steffl“ genannt – beeindruckt vor allem mit seinem knapp 137 Meter hohen Südturm aus dem Jahre 1433. Wer
sich die anderen Sehenswürdigkeiten der Stadt anschauen möchte,
muss nicht weit laufen: In der sogenannten Inneren Stadt befinden
sich auch die Staatsoper, das Burgtheater, die Kärntner Straße – die
am stärksten frequentierte Fußgängerzone Österreichs – und die
Hofburg (siehe Bild S. 45). In Letzterer sind u.a. die Schatzkammer
der Habsburger mit der Krone des Kaiserhauses Österreich und
das Sisi-Museum untergebracht. In der angrenzenden Spanischen
Hofreitschule sind die Vorführungen der edlen Lipizzaner-Hengste
sehenswert. Nicht nur der anschließende Burggarten beweist:
Wien ist weltweit eine der grünsten Städte. Die größte Parkanlage
ist der Prater (siehe Bild oben). Er ist fast doppelt so groß wie der
Central Park in New York und dreimal so groß wie der Berliner Tiergarten. Das ehemalige kaiserliche Jagdgebiet besteht hauptsäch44 _inspirations
lich aus einer Auenlandschaft mit mächtigen Pappelgruppen. Im
Frühling blühen hier unzählige Kastanienbäume, und im März
beginnt die Saison im angrenzenden Vergnügungspark „Wurstelprater“ mit dem berühmten Riesenrad (siehe Bild S. 45). Doch
Wien lohnt zu jeder Jahreszeit einen Besuch: Im Juli wird im Rahmen des Operettensommers im Schlosspark Theresianum die
Johann-Strauss-Operette „Wiener Blut“ aufgeführt. Das Literaturfestival O-Töne im Juli präsentiert openair und bei freiem Eintritt zahlreiche Lesungen im Museumsquartier Wien. Die Stars und
Sternchen der Filmbranche kommen vom 22. Oktober bis zum
4. November zur Viennale. Und besonders schön putzt sich Wien
im Winter heraus, wenn der Christkindlmarkt auf dem Rathausplatz den Duft von Punsch und Lebkuchen verbreitet und beim Kaiserball in den Prunkräumen der Hofburg die Tanzbeine geschwungen werden.

Die Brücke zum Orient
Es duftet nach Ingwer, Zimt und Kardamom. In den Schaufenstern
funkeln unzählige Goldketten, -ringe und -armreife, und die Teppichverkäufer preisen lautstark ihre Ware an. Auf dem Kapalı
Çarsı, dem mit 31 Hektar und rund 4.000 Geschäften größten
Basar Istanbuls wimmelt es von Menschen (siehe Bild Mitte). Die
Straßen tragen die Namen der Handwerke, die hier ihre Waren
verkaufen: von der Teppichhändlerstraße über die Antiquitätenhändlerstraße bis zur Gasse der Fischverkäufer. Ruhiger geht es
dagegen in der Sultan-Ahmed-Moschee zu. Dieses Meisterwerk
osmanischer Architektur beeindruckt mit seinem Reichtum an
blau-weißen Fliesen, die die Kuppel und den oberen Teil der Mauern zieren, und ihren sechs spitz in den Himmel ragenden Minaretten (siehe Bild oben). Das Innere des auch als Blaue Moschee
bekannten Gebäudes ist ein beinahe quadratischer Raum, in den
das Licht durch 260 Fenster fällt. Wenn der Muezzin fünfmal am
Tag zum Gebet ruft, füllt sich dieser riesige Innenraum mit Menschen. Istanbul hat 35 große und mehr als hundert kleine
Moscheen, deren Türme das Stadtbild prägen. Besonders genießen kann man den Ausblick vom Galata-Turm. Hier sieht man,
dass Istanbul genau wie Rom auf sieben Hügeln errichtet wurde.
Der Bosporus teilt die Stadt in zwei Welten: auf der einen Seite der
europäische, auf der anderen der asiatische Teil (Foto unten). Das
frühere Konstantinopel zog schon im Mittelalter Gelehrte und
Künstler an: „Für Wissenschaft und Bildung gibt es keinen Ort,
der Istanbul gleicht als aufnahmebereiter Hort. Wie weit auch die
Sonne die Welt durchstreicht, sie trifft auf keine Stadt, die Istanbul
gleicht“, schrieb im 17. Jahrhundert der Dichter Yûsuf Nâbi. Ungebrochen zieht die Stadt bis heute Menschen am Schnittpunkt von
Orient und Okzident in ihren Bann.

It smells of ginger, cinnamon and cardamom. Countless gold
chains, rings and armbands glitter in the shop windows; the rug
sellers shout the praise of their wares. Kapalı Çarsı, Istanbul’s largest bazaar – 31 hectares in size with around 4,000 stalls – teems
with people (photo, centre). The streets bear the names of the
craftworkers who sell their wares here: from Rug Seller Street and
Antique Seller Street to Fishmonger Lane. In the Sultan Ahmed
Mosque, in contrast, it is much more peaceful. The mosque is an
impressive masterpiece of Ottoman architecture, with a wealth of
blue and white tiles decorating the dome and the upper part of the
walls, and six minarets piercing the sky (photo, top). The interior
of the building, also known as the Blue Mosque, is an almost perfect square, flooded by the light from 260 windows. Five times a
day, when the muezzin calls the faithful to prayer, the vast room
fills with people. Istanbul has 35 large mosques, and more than a
hundred smaller ones, and their towers dominate the city skyline.
The view from the Galata Tower is particularly worthwhile. From
here, you can see that Istanbul, just like Rome, was built on seven
hills. The Bosporus divides the city into two worlds: on the one
side, European Istanbul, and on the other side, Asian Istanbul
(photo bottom). Even in the Middle Ages, the city – formerly
known as Constantinople – attracted scholars and artists. “For
science and learning, there is no other town as receptive as Istanbul. Wherever the sun traces its course over the earth, it finds no
city to match Istanbul,” wrote the poet Yûsuf Nâbi in the 17th century. To this day, the city at the intersection of east and west continues to draw people into its spell.

wurde, ahnte er noch nicht, dass seine Grabstätte einst eine Etappe des Jakobswegs, eines der bedeutendsten Pilgerwege Europas,
sein würde. Die rund 1.000 Jahre alte, westromanische Basilika
Saint-Sernin, die an der Stelle, wo er den Märtyrertod starb, errichtet wurde, gehört neben dem Canal du Midi und dem Hôtel-Dieu
Saint-Jacques zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe von Toulouse. Die
roten Ziegelsteine sind es, die das charakteristische Bild der Stadt

When Saint Saturnin was sent as a missionary to Languedoc and
Gascony and consecrated as the first Bishop of Toulouse, he had
no idea that his tomb would one day become a station along the
Way of St James, one of Europe’s most important pilgrimages. The
Romanesque Basilica of Saint Sernin, around 1,000 years old, was
built on the site of Saint Saturnin’s (French: Sernin) martyrdom.
Along with the Canal du Midi and the Hôtel-Dieu Saint-Jacques, the
basilica is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The city’s image is
defined by the red bricks that have earned it the nickname, “La Ville
Rose”. Toulouse’s 2000-year history is reflected in the multi-faceted character of France’s third largest university town. Not only pilgrims enter through the city gates on the banks of the Garonne.
Toulouse is also attractive for culture lovers, with vast artistic
collections stretching from ancient to contemporary works, wellstocked libraries, concert halls that are always full, and stages regularly graced by such stars as Leonard Cohen (9 July) or André Rieu
(30 November). The “Piano aux Jacobins” classical music festival
had a breathtaking backdrop: the walls of the gothic cloister at the
Church of the Jacobins, so steeped in history, have a warm acoustic
resonance that lends both old and new piano pieces a very special
tone.

Aber sobald das Wasser über dem Kopf zusammenschwappt und
es in die Tiefe geht, ist alles nur noch spannend. Eine andere Welt
öffnet sich, und mit Erstaunen stellt man fest, wie zutraulich sich
die Fische nähern, wenn der Tauchlehrer den sandigen Untergrund
etwas aufwirbelt. Eine der schönsten Tauchgründe und der von
Deutschland aus am schnellsten erreichbare tropische Ozean ist
das Rote Meer. Über 30 Tauchstationen gibt es in Sharm El-Sheikh
– vom Anfänger-Hausriff bis zum atemberaubenden Drop-off an
den Steilwänden des Sinai-Massivs. Legendär sind die Tauchplätze
der Tiran-Inseln und des Nationalparks Ras Mohammed – vor
allem die Riffe Jackfish Alley, Shark Reef und Yolanda Reef. Obwohl
alle intensiv betaucht werden, sind sie überwiegend intakt. Und
auch Großfische sind keine Seltenheit:
Thunfische, Haie, Jackfische und
sogar Mantas tummeln sich
vor allem von Juni bis
August vor der Küste.
Auch Nichttaucher kommen in Sharm El-Sheikh
auf ihre Kosten: Windsurfen, Schnorcheln, Wasserski, Hochseeangeln, Kamelreiten
sowie Jeep- und Wüstensafaris bieten

It does take a little courage to exchange the snorkel for a diving
regulator and place your trust in the technology. But as soon as the
water swashes over your head and you plunge into the depths,
there is nothing but excitement. A whole new world opens up,
and with astonishment you see how friendly the fish are as they
approach when the diving instructor disturbs something on
the sandy seabed. One of the most beautiful diving sites, and
the easiest tropical ocean to reach from Germany, is the Red
Sea. Sharm El-Sheikh has more than 30 diving stations – from
a small coral reef at a hotel shoreline to the breathtaking drop-off
from the steep walls of the Sinai range. The dive sites on Tiran
Island and in the Ras Muhammad National Park – especially the
Jackfish Alley, Shark and Yolanda reefs. Although they are all intensively dived they remain mostly intact. And big fish are not uncommon, either; tuna, sharks, jacks and even manta rays cavort off the
coast, especially in the months from June to August. Non-divers,
too, can enjoy Sharm El-Sheikh – windsurfing, snorkelling, water
skiing, ocean fishing, camel riding and desert jeep safaris are all
included in the wide range of leisure activities on offer. Organised
tours are available to Saint Catherine’s Monastery, Mount Sinai,
the Coloured Canyon and the Blue Mountains. Shopping delights
are to be had in the large shopping mall and the many small
bazaars, and you can while away the evenings in the many bars and
discos or at the casino – but if you want to go diving again the next
day, it is best to go to bed early.

The Nordic legacy is ubiquitous in Oslo. The gods Odin and Thor
gaze down on visitors from the reliefs on the facade of the City
Hall, where the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded each year. The Viking
Ship museum explains the maritime art of the Norsemen, with the
largest and best preserved Norwegian viking ship on display. A
stroll through the historic district of Gamleyben, where the exposed foundations of the mediaeval settlement are visible, evokes
memories of the time when the city was known as Christiana.
Modern Oslo has only a half million residents; the atmosphere is
relaxed and the location picturesque – nestled at the innermost
end of the Oslofjord, surrounded by snow-capped mountains and
wooded hills. Skiing, kayaking, sunbathing on an island beach or
enjoying the vibrant nightlife – all of this is possible without leaving
the city. Oslo is one of the most important cultural cities of the
North. There is a big event almost every month – including concerts with international stars, major festivals such as the Oslo Jazz
Festival (10-15 August) which has been held for more than 20 years
and attracts such performers as Anthony & the Johnsons and The
Scott Hamilton Scandinavian Five, and opera and ballet performances in one of the world’s most spectacular opera houses. The

and opened in April 2008, is located directly on the banks of the

Das nordische Erbe ist in Oslo allgegenwärtig: Die Götter Odin
und Thor begrüßen von den Reliefs an der Außenfassade Besucher
des Rathauses, in dem jedes Jahr der Friedensnobelpreis verliehen
wird, das Wikingerschiffmuseum erklärt die Seefahrtkunst der
Nordmänner – hier steht das größte und am besten erhaltene norwegische Wikingerschiff –, und ein Spaziergang durch den historischen Stadtteil Gamlebyen, wo die freigelegten Grundmauern der
mittelalterlichen Siedlung zu sehen sind, erinnert an die Zeiten, als
die Stadt noch Christiania hieß. Das heutige Oslo hat nur eine
halbe Million Einwohner, die Atmosphäre ist entspannt und die
Lage sehr malerisch: am innersten Oslofjord gelegen, eingerahmt
von bewaldeten Hügeln und schneebedeckten Bergen. Ski laufen,
Kajak fahren, am Inselstrand sonnen oder das pulsierende Nachtleben genießen – das alles ist innerhalb der Stadtgrenzen möglich.
Oslo ist eine der bedeutendsten Kulturstädte des Nordens. Beinahe jeden Monat findet eine große Veranstaltung statt: Konzerte mit
internationalen Stars, große Festivals wie z.B. das Oslo Jazz Festival (10.-15. August, u.a. mit Anthony and the Johnsons, Scott
Hamilton Scandinavian Five), das seit über 20 Jahren veranstaltet
wird, bis hin zu Opern- und Ballettaufführungen. Letztere werden
in einem der spektakulärsten Opernhäuser der Welt in Szene
