Weltruhm erlangte Chemnitz schon als Heimat international bekannter Automarken wie Audi,
Horch, Wanderer oder DKW. Das Benzin hat man auch 100 Jahre später noch im Blut. Der
Automobilbau ist hier zuhause und fest in der Industrielandschaft verwurzelt. Im Chemnitzer
VW-Motorenwerk laufen täglich 3.400 Motoren und 3.000 Ausgleichswellengetriebe vom Band.
250 Unternehmen aus Stadt und Umgebung beliefern die Automobilindustrie, darunter die
sächsischen Produktionsstandorte von Porsche, BMW und VW. Allein in Chemnitz erwirtschaften
110 Unternehmen einen Umsatz von mehr als einer Milliarde Euro. Inzwischen ist man so gut
aufgestellt, dass die komplette Wertschöpfungskette regional abgedeckt wird.
Damit das auch in Zukunft so bleibt, sichern 10.000 Fachkräfte und 1.600 Absolventen
regionaler Universitäten und Fachhochschulen jährlich aus dem gewerblich-technischen
Bereich die Produktion.
Chemnitz achieved world renown as the home of internationally known car marques
such as Audi, Horch, Wanderer and DKW. Even 100 years on, there is still petrol flowing
through the veins of the city’s people. Automobile manufacturing is at home here and
deeply rooted in the industrial landscape. Every day 3,400 engines and 3,000 balance
shaft gears roll off the production line of the VW engine factory in Chemnitz. Around 250
companies based in the city and surrounding area are suppliers to the automobile industry,
among them the Saxony-based production facilities for Porsche, BMW and VW. In
Chemnitz alone, 110 companies generate turnover of more than one billion euros and
everything is so well set up that the entire value added chain is covered across the
region.
To ensure that this also remains the case in future, 10,000 specialists
and 1,600 students who graduate from regional universities and
higher education institutions every year with commercial and technical
qualifications secure continued production.

Das Handwerk hat in Chemnitz eine lange Tradition. Fast 15,9 Betriebe kommen hier auf 1.000 Einwohner.
Das liegt weit über dem Bundesdurchschnitt von 11,8/1.000. Vereinigt sind alle Unternehmen in der
Chemnitzer Handwerkskammer, kurz HWK. Bereits zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts, angeregt durch die
Industrialisierung, wurde die Gewerbefreiheit für Handwerker und Gewerbetreibende eingeführt.

Energiequellen mit ihren steigenden
Preisen. Und sehen lassen kann

are frequently brought to fruition
with the skill of a craftsman. One
of the first energy self-sufficient
houses in Germany also has its
foundations in Chemnitz. In a longstanding cooperation project with
TU Bergakademie Freiberg and
other partners, FASA AG developed
the ENERGETIKhaus100®. This
so-called sun house combines
heat from the sun with solar
power. That is not only especially
sustainable, but is also easy on
the finances of the owner. After
all, they are not at all reliant on
the usual sources of energy and
their frequent price increases. The
ENERGETIKhaus100® is also a
sight to behold. The show house
can be viewed on the “Rittergut
Rabenstein” solar site or by
visiting the company’s premises on
Zwickauer Straße.

Chemnitz can look back on a long tradition of crafts. There are almost 15.9 businesses for every
1,000 residents here. That is far above the national average of 11.8/1,000. All these companies are
brought together under the umbrella of the Chemnitz Chamber of Crafts (“Handwerkskammer” in German,
or HWK for short). Prompted by industrialisation, freedom of trade for craftsmen and tradesmen was
introduced at the beginning of the 19th century.

Chemnitz wohl. Heftstreifen, Feinwaschmittel,
mechanischer Webstuhl, gedruckte Batterie, sogar

back to the inventiveness of the resourceful people

behind it all include the Fraunhofer Institute,

Was aber, wenn Technologien fusionieren
sollen? Wenn etwa in Hightech-Kunststoffe
intelligente Mikro- und Nanosysteme
eingeflochten werden, damit beispielsweise
Windräder oder Flugzeugoberflächen besser
auf Wind, Wetter oder Defekte reagieren
können? Im Bundesexzellenzcluster MERGE
forschen 100 Wissenschaftler an genau dieser
Technologiefusion. Das Ziel von MERGE:
Heute noch getrennte Fertigungsprozesse
bei der Verarbeitung unterschiedlicher
Werkstoffgruppen wie Textilien, Kunststoffe
und Metalle sollen künftig zusammengeführt
werden. Mehrkomponentenbauteile können
dann preiswerter und mit geringerem
Energieaufwand in Großserie produziert
werden. 38,5 Millionen Euro fließen in
das Forschungsprojekt, das Wissenschaft,
Wirtschaft und Forschung nachhaltige Impulse
gibt und den Anspruch auf eine internationale
Spitzenposition unterstreicht.
Fusions in the world of business are common
practice. But what if technologies were to
fuse? If, for instance, intelligent micro- and
nanosystems intertwined with high-tech
plastics so that wind turbines or aircraft
surfaces could react better to wind, weather
conditions or defects? In the MERGE cluster
of excellence, 100 scientists are researching
precisely this kind of technology fusion. The
aim of MERGE is to find a way of one day
combining production processes involving
various material groups such as textiles,
plastics and metals which are currently done
separately. By doing so, multi-component
parts can be produced on a large scale more
economically and using less energy. A total
of 38.5 million euros are being injected
into the research project, which will act
as a long-term stimulus for the world of
science, business and research and also
underscore claims to a leading position on
the international stage.

with its distinctive urban landscape that tells the story of the founding period and industrial boom, but also a story of war, dictatorships
and ultimately new directions that characterise the new Chemnitz. It is a self-confident city that is also down to earth in a likeable way.
Amid the idyllic landscape, it is possible to live and work well here. Reasonable rents and sufficient living space provide plenty of room

Spätestens seit die Chemnitzer Band „Kraftklub“ die deutsche Musikszene erobert, genießt sie Kultstatus.
