Dormant for thousands of years, they continue to be one of the region’s main curiosities. Two of the most famous volcanoes are the Puy de Dôme (1,465 m), offering unrivalled views over the Chaîne des Puys and its 80 domes and craters, and the Puy Mary (1,787 m), with its imposing shape in the heart of the Cantal mountains. In addition to the many volcanic summits, Auvergne is a land of crater lakes formed by eruptions thousands of years ago. Visitors can hike, bike, sail or swim in these unique lakes. 2 DIVERSE OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES In one of Europe’s largest protected areas, which includes two nature parks and five nature reserves, Auvergne invites you to enjoy a fantastic journey, with hiking, cycling, horse riding, watersports, adventure tree-climbing, leisure parks and plenty more. One of France’s most famous hiking trail, the Way of St. James begins in Le Puy-en-Velay. With sections of its route listed as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO, the Via Podiensis is one of France’s four routes to Santiago de Compostela. 4 3 IMPRESSIVE ROMANESQUE CHURCHES Auvergne has one of the richest Romanesque heritages in Europe, with more than 250 religious buildings built between the 11th and 13th centuries. The Romanesque style in Auvergne is particularly well represented by five major churches: Saint-Saturnin, Saint-Nectaire, Notre-Dame-d’Orcival, Saint-Austremoine abbey church in Issoire and Notre-Dame-du-Port in Clermont-Ferrand which has UNESCO world heritage status as part of the St. James’ Way. Other examples of the Romanesque style are the Saint-Julien basilica in Brioude, with its contemporary stained glass windows, and the UNESCO listed cathedral of Le Puy-en-Velay. 4 CHARMING VILLAGES Eleven villages in Auvergne have been ranked among the “Most Beautiful Villages in France” for their charm, history and quality as tourist destinations. In Haute-Loire, visit Blesle, Arlempdes, Pradelles and Lavaudieu, with its extraordinary Romanesque cloister. In Cantal, Salers and Tournemire proudly display their architecture made using volcanic stone and their traditional schist roofs. In Allier, discover Charroux, a medieval village, and in Puy-de-Dôme, explore Usson, Saint-Floret, Montpeyroux with its winemaking atmosphere and Saint-Saturnin, with its exceptional Romanesque church and its château. www.france-beautiful-villages.org 5 EXCEPTIONAL SPA TOWNS Auvergne is home to a total of ten spa towns of the Massif Central’s spa trail (Route des villes d’eaux): Bourbon-l’Archambault, Vichy, Néris-les-Bains, Chaudes-Aigues, La Bourboule, Le Mont-Dore, Saint-Nectaire, Châteauneuf-les-Bains, Châtel-Guyon and Royat-Chamalières. The towns offer visitors all the charm of spa towns with an astounding historic and architectural heritage that in some places can be traced back to the Roman era. As well as the therapeutic properties offered by each spa, these towns provide a source of relaxation and escape in a natural environment. www.villesdeaux.com 6 7 UNIQUE AND EXCITING CITIES While the Auvergne is well known for its outdoor activities, there is also lots to see in the major cities of the region: Moulins, the capital of the Dukes of Bourbon and nowadays home to the finest dance and theatre costumes at the Centre National du Costume de Scène; Vichy and its spa-town heritage; Le Puy-en-Velay with its remarkable complex of religious buildings; Aurillac, at the foothills of the Cantal mountains; or Clermont-Ferrand, bearing the imprint of the Michelin factory’s heritage, to name just a few.Take a guided tour or just go for a stroll, enjoy shopping, lively café terraces or walks in the parks and gardens - the towns of Auvergne are living communities rich in history where you’ll never have a dull moment! REMARKABLE MEDIEVAL FORTRESSES AND CASTLES These Auvergne castles have astonishing diversity, from medieval military fortresses to elegant Renaissance residences. Visiting these chateaux is a great way to better understand history and the region’s past. Many of them provide fun and entertainment for children, and some of them even offer bed and breakfast accommodation. 5 8 AN IMMENSE PLAYGROUND FOR FAMILIES Auvergne is a holiday paradise for the family! Discover farm producers, cheese dairies and agers along the Route des Fromages d’Auvergne (Cheese Road). www.fromages-aop-auvergne.com No mention of Auvergne would be complete without talking about the local products that have made its reputation, including cured meats (hams and sausages), the Puy-en-Velay green lentils, the various mineral waters like Volvic, Vichy Célestins… And to finish off your meal with something a little lighter, do not hesitate to taste one of the region’s famous Pastilles de Vichy or a glass of Verveine du Velay! In some areas of the Auvergne temperatures are influenced by the altitude of the terrain, so no one area will be the same. For those looking for sunshine and warmth, May, June, July, August and September is the best time to visit the Auvergne. Further up, on the Corneille rock is the imposing iron statue of Notre-Dame-de-France (the town’s protective virgin). Visitors can discover all these sights via a tourist train that circles the town.
