Hello Again Orchid Lovers,
As I write this the weather is beautiful and there are so many orchids in bloom right now in my greenhouse, I
really have to force myself to get this done. I would rather be outside talking to my flowers. (One of my
favorite past-times).
This month’s meeting was really special to me. I have a new-found love of Paphiopedilums and the multifloral’s really are fascinating to me; to say the least. Larry Cox lives in the Redlands of Homestead and has
been growing orchids for over 40 years in his full, 100’ x 30’ greenhouse. He has over 40 awards from the
American Orchid Society. If you see a plant name followed by ‘Electra’, that is one of his awarded plants.
As a former teacher back in the early 1970’s Larry started growing Cattleya orchids. He
says he has run the gauntlet and finally settled into growing Paphiopedilums and the
multi-florals are his favorites to grow. Why? They are sequential bloomers with
multiple inflorescence and they have the longest lasting blooms of all orchids. They can
bloom anytime from January through June. There is one in particular, Paph.
chamberlainanum, that stays in bloom non-stop.
Paphiopedilums mainly like shade but the multi-florals want more light especially in the
winter. They want even moisture, but must drain well and want some drying at the
roots. They never want to be too dry or soggy. When it is windy they dry out more
quickly but good air movement at all times is very important.
Multi-florals bloom on a single mature growth. Larry cautions don’t buy seedling’s because you won’t live
long enough to see it bloom. They want to be repotted every year before the mix turns to mud; spring is the
best time, or anytime except summer; it’s not good. They like to be pot bound in taller pots. Place a single
layer of Styrofoam peanuts in in the bottom of the pot and Larry says the fir bark you buy at Home Depot is
ok to use. Place plants in a shadier place and don’t water newly potted plants for 5 to 8 days.
Fertilize at 1/3 to 1/4 strength every two weeks and cut back in the winter. From the middle of September
to the middle of December they want to rest. Give them less light and less food. They can withstand
temperatures down into the 30’s. It will not harm them but they won’t like it.
Some plants that he mentioned are Paph. sanderianumin; discovered in 1800’s, it likes 75% shade. You can
grow it under an oak tree with morning light. It has extremely long petals that are considered to aid in
pollination. Paph. laynaldianum blooms usually in January and Paph. lowii blooms in the spring. Paph.
parishii blooms in June and July and Paph. philippinesse is the easiest to grow and needs more light; so grow
it with your cattleyas. Paph. praestans also need more light. Paph. rothschildianum (the Kng) is from
Borneo and likes cold temperatures and bright light to shock it into blooming. Its hybrids are considered to
be hard to grow. Paph. kolopakingii is a huge plant and its spike is a least a yard tall.

I thoroughly enjoyed his very informative program. I purchased one new plant from Larry. It is Paph. Clare
Ruggiero. It is a cross between Paph. bedegegomii x Paph. Pinocchio. I am very excited to add it to my
collection and I hope, with any luck at all, I’ll have some blooms to show off next Spring on the Show & Tell
table.
This weekend November 1st and 2nd we will be participating in the Mounts Fall Plant Sale. If you signed up to
work in our booth; thank you. If not there are still time slots available and we could use your help. Call
Jacob if you would like to help 427-4372. Remember you will get into the event free if you are working at
our booth. The admission is $10. or if you are a Mounts member, it is free. Charline tells me we have some
really gorgeous plants for sale. If you go….make it a point to stop by and check them out.
Our next meeting will be November 13th and Mark Edlund will be presenting a program
on the care and culture of Dendrobiums. Mark is the owner of Orchid Acres right here
in Wellington. It’s been quite a while since he’s done a program for us. So come
prepared to learn all you need to know to grow these beauties. I have only recently
gotten excited about Dendrobiums again. The hybridizers are creating some really
unique new varieties and I have been adding them to my collection on occasion. Mark
will have plants for sale so be sure to bring your checkbook or some spending money so
you don’t miss out on being able to add something new to your collection. Martha
Lawson and Sadie Bicknell will arrive early to keep the building open for us. Our
birthday babies in November will provide the refreshments. Happy Birthday to
Christine Alward, Sarah Michaelides, Sarah Thomas and Donna Tobey. If any of you will not be able
to attend call Jacob, 472-4372 so he can arrange for someone to fill in for you.

A Message From Mary:
REFRESHMENTS
Last month Jacob routed a sign-up for refreshments, and it seems there was some confusion; some had
signed up next to their name, which we don’t want. Here’s the scoop…..those who have their birthday are
to bring something for the table that month. However, it turns out that some months we don’t have enough
members celebrating their birthday, or can’t attend and the table has very little. Also, some members are
snowbirds with birthdays during the summer and don’t contribute at all.
Those who have birthdays in August and December should sign up for a different month since we have our
Anniversary and Christmas parties and no refreshments are needed. In addition to bringing goodies the
month of your birthday, if you would sign up to do it again in a month not your birthday, we would
appreciate it.

We’re going to send the sigh-up sheet around again and hope this explains what is needed. It’s wonderful to
see the table loaded with various goodies and we all enjoy them, so please help out.
DUES
It’s that time of the year again. We collect annual dues from October – December, hoping everyone pays
during this period. If you can’t attend a meeting, please mail your check made out to OSPB for $30 or $35
(family) to: OSPB, P.O. Box 211463, Royal Palm Beach, FL 33421. Please renew your membership, we love
seeing you at the meetings. The deadline is January 1st.

I hope everyone will attend our Holiday Party. It is always so much fun. Remember each one in attendance
will receive a blooming size orchid plant. That alone is worth half the price of your dinner. If you’ve never
been, make this the year to attend. This is one of the few times I get to have prime rib of beef so I really
look forward to it.
Some of you have expressed an interest in visiting my greenhouse. If you would like to come see where I
spend most of my time talking to the flowers, you can call me, e-mail me, or see me at the next meeting and
we can arrange a time for you to visit.
Be sure to come to our November 13th meeting and bring a friend. I’ll see you there if I don’t see you first at
the Fall Plant Sale this weekend.
