britt-ish flair meets world-class amenities british inspired living in toronto Get Your Britt-On BRIT 0008 Main Brochure.indd 1 21/08/12 5:03 PM the team from left to right: Mark Mandelbaum, Alessandro Munge, Joe Latobesi, Anne Lambrou, Andy DeSantis and Barry Fenton LONDON CALLING London is best described as a city of remarkable contradictions. Ancient monuments stand next to futuristic visions of steel and glass. The world’s longest reigning monarchy exists alongside a twenty-first century modern democracy. Time moves at warp speed here even as it sometimes slows down to savour the traditional afternoon tea ceremony. Home to the world’s defining trends in art, music, design, food, fashion and film, London is a global style-maker in every sense of the word. So when Lanterra Developments envisioned a new condominium inspired by the true essence of London, they knew they couldn’t do justice to the concept without experiencing London up close and personal. In May of 2012, a handpicked team – Mark Mandelbaum and Barry Fenton of Lanterra Developments, Real Estate Professional – Anne Lambrou, Andy DeSantis and Joe Latobesi of Montana Steele Strategic Marketing and Alessandro Munge of Munge-Leung Interior Design – spent over a week in London, absorbing the sights and sounds, cultures and cuisines, arts and architectures, luxury and lifestyles of the most exciting city on the planet. The idea was to look beyond the obvious and get inspired by the finest in design, architecture and boutique luxury living that London has to offer; then bring it to Toronto and incorporate some of those quintessential elements of London in their new condominium at Bay and Wellesley. The result is a residence that’s both timeless and modern, classic and contemporary. A residence that celebrates the historic connection between two great cities separated by a pond. Welcome to The Britt Condominiums. the london eye /westminster BRIT 0008 Main Brochure.indd 2-3 21/08/12 5:04 PM BRITT HERITTAGE Visiting London for the first time frequently seems like a long series of “déjà vu” moments: confronting for the first time buildings, monuments and urban vistas that you’ve never seen before but seem so, well, familiar-whether it’s Big Ben, or Buckingham Palace, Piccadilly Circus, or Trafalgar Square, St. Paul’s Cathedral or Tower Bridge. It’s daunting and exhilarating at the same time. opposite page: london / big ben in westminster BRIT 0008 Main Brochure.indd 4-5 21/08/12 5:04 PM London was unquestionably the world’s first modern megalopolis—the largest city in the world for centuries—but, at its core, it’s essentially a series of urban villages whose names resonate around the world: Mayfair and Marylebone, Knightsbridge and Chelsea, Kensington and Covent Garden, Westminster and The City, as in The City of London, the square mile from which this vast city emerged and remains to this day the world’s leading financial centre. A ROYAL TRADITION London is a timeless city and a kaleidoscope of tradition and modernity, where old and new, classic and contemporary live side by side. London’s art and theatre, fashion and music, culture and cuisine continue to set the trend for what’s in, what’s out across the globe. Toronto, like London, works so well because its communities, and neighbourhoods, are so vibrant and lively. Take for instance, the Bay and Wellesley area, home to The Sutton Place Hotel, and future home to The Britt – a neighbourhood not unlike those in the West End of London where power, style and luxury intersect. NOTHING SAYS LONDON AND BRITISH TRADITION MORE THAN THE QUEEN AND THE ROYAL FAMILY. AS THE COUNTRY CELEBRATES THE QUEEN’S DIAMOND JUBILEE, THE RADIANT ROYAL COUPLE, KATE & WILLIAM, HAVE BECOME GLOBAL AMBASSADORS OF THE MONARCHY. It’s essentially a series of urban villages whose names resonate around the world: Mayfair and Marylebone, Knightsbridge and Chelsea, Kensington and Covent Garden, Westminster and The City, as in The City of London. BRIT 0008 Main Brochure.indd 6-7 THE BRITT’S UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO NEIGHBOUR, MASSEY COLLEGE, IS VERY OXONIAN AND ITS MASTER, JOHN FRASER, HAS JUST WRITTEN A BOOK ABOUT CANADA’S RELATIONSHIP TO THE CROWN. HIS FAVOURITE SOVEREIGN? THE CURRENT INCUMBENT. “SHE’S JUST THE OLD LADY OF THE HOUSE OF WINDSOR, VERY FAITHFUL AND LOYAL TO THE MANDATE SHE’S BEEN GIVEN.” 21/08/12 5:04 PM But mostly, the story of The Sutton Place was about the impeccable way in which it extended unique hospitality to presidents and princes, premiers and prime ministers, divas, duchesses or just ordinary folks who enjoyed being treated like kings and queens. That legacy will live on at The Britt, which will artfully marry the traditions of the old Sutton Place hotel with a commitment to becoming an elegant, exemplary and very contemporary residence at the crossroads of one of the most dynamic and livable cities in the world. Close your eyes and you’d think you were in London. Think about it: nearby is Queen’s Park, the centre of political power in the province, and literally across the street is the campus of the U of T, Canada’s intellectual powerhouse. A few blocks north lies Bay/Bloor and the Yorkville district, the epicentre of glamour and elegance in the city, and a few blocks to the east lands you in the Church Street Village with its lively lifestyle and bohemian brio. BRIT 0008 Main Brochure.indd 8-9 That legacy will live on at The Britt, which will artfully marry the traditions of the old Sutton Place hotel with a commitment to becoming an elegant, exemplary and very contemporary residence. But timing, as they say, is everything in life, and the Sutton Place opened about the time Toronto morphed into Hollywood North and the Toronto film festival was on track to become one of the top two film venues in the world. More or less overnight, the Sutton Place became a combination bunkhouse and canteen for big stars like Sophia Loren, Debbie Reynolds, Tony Curtis, Michael Jackson and endless other famous faces. 21/08/12 5:04 PM BRITT ARCHITECTTURE One key reason why London can seem so eclectic is that no single architectural style defines it. Contemporary London is undergoing an extraordinary period of rebirth and renewal. Much like Toronto’s downtown, where modern steel and glass converse with traditional stone to sculpt a whole new language of urban architecture. Case in point, the stately Sutton Place Hotel at Bay & Wellesley, soon to be The Britt. opposite page: london / city hall & the tower bridge BRIT 0008 Main Brochure.indd 10-11 21/08/12 5:04 PM London is a veritable compendium of architecture through the ages. In Whitehall and Westminster, London is very Gothic both of the ancient and medieval variety—the 12th century Westminster Abbey—or the 19th century neo-Gothic kind, as in Sir Charles Barry’s magnificent Palace of Westminster. In Mayfair and Bloomsbury, London is decidedly Georgian with yellow brick townhouses lining its famous squares: Berkeley, Grosvenor, Bedford and Russell. In Whitehall and Westminster, London is very Gothic both of the ancient and medieval. When it came time to rebuild after the Great Fire of London, famous architects like Inigo Jones opted for “Palladian” – to wit, the magnificent Banqueting Hall in Whitehall, with its famous Rubens fresco ceiling. Others, like Sir Christopher Wren, arguably the city’s single most famous architect, went Baroque and the result was one of London’s most iconic buildings, St. Paul’s Cathedral. BRIT 0008 Main Brochure.indd 12-13 21/08/12 5:04 PM Among the greatest architects practising today in London are Norman Foster and Richard Rogers whose respective buildings – the distinctively shaped Swiss-Re Building, dubbed The Gherkin by most Londoners, and the Lloyds Bank which wears its mechanical innards on its skin – are perhaps London’s two finest new architectural monuments. Over the decades, some of this architectural exuberance found its way into Toronto and The Sutton Place Hotel, which still proudly exhibits its modernist façade in a neighbourhood brimming with life and energy. As the celebrated hotel gets transformed into a stunning condominium residence, it will combine the best of old and new, classic and modern to offer an unparalleled living experience. MODERN BRITISH MINIMALISM Over the decades, some of this architectural exuberance found its way into Toronto and The Sutton Place Hotel. AMONG THE WORLD’S MOST FAMOUS CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTS IS LORD NORMAN FOSTER, WHOSE MOST FAMOUS LONDON BUILDING IS CALLED THE GHERKIN BECAUSE PEOPLE THINK IT LOOKS LIKE A PICKLE. FOSTER’S HANDIWORK CAN BE SEEN HERE, NEAR THE BRITT, IN THE DAN PHARMACY BUILDING, AT THE U OF T, WITH ITS TRADEMARK BACK-LIT “PODS.” BRIT 0008 Main Brochure.indd 14-15 21/08/12 5:04 PM the britt condominium The Britt’s majestic 8-storey podium will have a presence that’s both stately and welcoming. A majestic 8-storey podium will anchor the point tower, while animating the streetscape with a presence that’s both imposing and welcoming. With its size, scale and mass, The Britt will virtually own this intersection of the city, defining a prestigious new address for the statusconscious city dweller. Whether at street level or up in the skies, The Britt is where London chic meets Toronto energy. Architecturally, The Britt will rise with soaring elegance above the intersection of Bay and Wellesley, offering spectacular panoramic views of the city skyline. An articulated façade clad in iridescent blue glass and sleek lines of stone and steel makes a classic statement of distinction. the britt podium BRIT 0008 Main Brochure.indd 16-17 21/08/12 5:04 PM the britt condominium The Britt’s upper storeys will present a dramatic façade with shimmering glass and wraparound balconies. Living in fashionable hotels has long been a staple of London life and here again, legendary hotels are very much part of the warp and weft of Toronto life. None more so than The Sutton Place Hotel, at Bay and Wellesley, soon to be reincarnated as The Britt. opposite page: london / the berkeley’s blue bar lounge BRIT 0008 Main Brochure.indd 20-21 21/08/12 5:05 PM LONDON’S BOUTIQUE HOTELS The Corinthia Hotel in Mayfair presents a world of stunning design and flawless service. ILLUMINATED BY A SPECTACULAR BACCARAT CHANDELIER AND OVERLOOKING A PICTURESQUE, MAPLELINED COURTYARD, THE LOBBY LOUNGE OF THE CORINTHIA HOTEL IS THE EPITOME OF LONDON BOUTIQUE ELEGANCE. WITH ITS LEGENDARY GRANDEUR, OPULENCE AND SERVICE, IT’S THE FAVOURITE LONDON HOTEL OF THE INTERNATIONAL JET SET. london / the corinthia hotel London is home to such exquisite luxury boutique hotels as The Connaught and Claridge’s, The Dorchester, The Langham and numerous others no less remarkable in their pomp and splendour. The Connaught, located in London’s chic Mayfair district, is steeped in history and radiates contemporary style with classic character. Claridge’s is another celebrated London boutique hotel. Like The Sutton Place Hotel, Claridge’s has been a home away from home for stars, socialites and the crowned heads of Europe. THE CORINTHIA IS LOCATED IN THE HEART OF WHITEHALL, STEPS TO ELEGANT SHOPPING, DINING AND THE ARTS. london / the langham hotel BRIT 0008 Main Brochure.indd 22-23 london / the landmark hotel 21/08/12 5:05 PM The Britt lobby features marble-faced portals which lead to the reception area and lobby lounge off the main level. The Harlequinpatterned floor, glass chandelier and collection of bold art prints add modern sophistication to the lobby’s grandiose atmosphere. The focal point of the Britt’s expansive, double-height lobby is its grand staircase. Splitting elegantly into two, the staircase steers up to an atrium level: the left staircase leads to a private lounge and boardroom, while the right staircase connects to an additional lounge space. Ornate balconies on either side overlook the spacious lobby below. The atrium level connects with the Britt’s second-floor amenities and outdoor terrace. The design has the amenities programmed in the same fashion as a fine hotel – featuring a spa with hot tub and sauna, outdoor landscaped terrace, stateof-the-art fitness facilities and function rooms allow guests to socialize, conduct business, or relax in privacy. the britt lobby BRIT 0008 Main Brochure.indd 24-25 21/08/12 5:05 PM Residents and visitors will be welcomed in The Britt’s magnificent atrium Lobby Lounge. The lobby lounge features a plaster relief-patterned ceiling, ambient fireplace with carved stone facing, stylish seating and elegant light fixtures, surrounded by designer-selected accessories. Crisp walls featuring applied moulding wrap the room, with the focal point being a collection of photographs preserved from the original Sutton Place Hotel. These photographs feature starlets and celebrities who had previously stayed at the hotel, and act as a nostalgic connection to the building’s acclaimed history. the britt lobby lounge BRIT 0008 Main Brochure.indd 26-27 21/08/12 5:05 PM BRITT AMENITTIES When it comes to personal indulgence, Londoners are up there with the best of them. Whether it’s luxuriating in a sensuous spa or celebrating in style with friends and family, Londoners know how to live it up. Like its English counterpart across the ocean, Torontonians also love their recreation and The Britt offers the perfect setting to inspire mind, body and spirit. opposite page: london / the langham hotel lounge BRIT 0008 Main Brochure.indd 28-29 21/08/12 5:05 PM London revels in its eclectic bars, pubs and lounges, its award-winning restaurants and mouth-watering cuisines, its diverse cultural fusion of tastes and traditions. As a global centre of nightlife and entertainment, this city really knows how to party. London’s nightclubs are famous the world over and the club scene here is beyond compare. It’s a cliché but Samuel Johnson’s pronouncement about a man who is tired of London being tired of life still holds good. From the glossy clubs of Kensington and Chelsea to the edgy urban hang-out bars in the east, every taste is catered for, and whether your idea of a good night out involves chic hotel bars or the good old British pub, you won’t be disappointed. DAVID COLLINS SETTING THE BAR VERY HIGH ON BRITISH DESIGN London’s nightclubs are famous the world over and the club scene here is beyond compare. LONDON HAS SOME OF THE MOST LEGENDARY BARS IN THE WORLD AND ONE GUY, DAVID COLLINS, SEEMS TO HAVE DESIGNED THEM ALL: THE BAR AT THE CONNAUGHT, THE FUMOIR AT CLARIDGES, THE BLUE BAR AT THE BERKELEY, THE WOLESELY, THE GILBERT SCOTT—THE LIST GOES ON AND ON. ALL DIFFERENT, BUT EACH AN EXERCISE IN COLLINS’S TRADEMARK “CULTURED OPULENCE.” “DAVID COMBINES BRITISH STYLE WITH HOLLYWOOD GLAMOUR,” NOTES ONE AFICIONADO. If the party scene in London is vibrant and eclectic, it’s no less exhilarating at The Britt. Whether soaking in the luxury of a spa or partying the night away with friends, the recreational amenities at The Britt are second to none in the city. While Mayfair houses aristocrats in town palaces like Devonshire House, Chelsea boasts wealthy arty Bohemians like Mick Jagger, who at one time lived on Cheyne Walk near the Thames. And West End is where power, style and luxury intersect. Not unlike Bay & Wellesley in Toronto, longtime home to the Sutton Place hotel and today the site of The Britt. opposite page: london / piccadilly circus BRIT 0008 Main Brochure.indd 46-47 21/08/12 5:06 PM ART … WITH A PINT! Downtown Toronto’s majestic soaring skyline rivals London’s impressive riverfront panorama. To the south, the majestic soaring skyline of downtown Toronto rises against the pristine blue waters of Lake Ontario. The Royal Ontario Museum nearby is home to an extensive collection of exhibits tracing the course of human history down the ages. Enjoy a spectacular stage production at the new Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, or admire the intricate ceramic sculptures at the Gardiner Museum. Film buffs will revel in the world’s premier film expo, the Toronto International Film Festival, which is held at several venues around this neighbourhood, and brings Hollywood’s brightest and most beautiful to this great city. BRIT 0008 Main Brochure.indd 48-49 A MAJOR RETROSPECTIVE OF DAMIEN HIRST’S WORK HAS JUST OPENED AT LONDON’S TATE MODERN, THE MOST VISITED MODERN ART GALLERY IN THE WORLD WITH OVER 5 MILLION VISITORS PER YEAR. THE “LOCAL” AS IN THE PUB YOU FREQUENT, HAS ALWAYS BEEN A KEY ELEMENT IN ENGLISH LIFE AND LONDON IS CHOCK-ABLOCK WITH HISTORIC AND BEAUTIFUL PUBS. 21/08/12 5:06 PM The Bay/Wellesley neighbourhood has it all and, as a consequence, the best restaurants, clubs, bars, stores, hotels, spas are mere moments away by foot, cab, or TTC. Money & Power. Gucci, Glamour & Gray Matter. Like London’s West End, what’s unique about Bay and Wellesley is that it straddles so many of Toronto’s “in” destinations. The province’s power brokers are nearby at Queen’s Park. Fashionistas swarm up the street in the environs of Bay/Bloor and Yorkville. Eggheads ply their trade across the street at the U of T. And Big Money is just a mile or so south on Bay at King. This neighbourhood has it all and, as a consequence, the best restaurants, clubs, bars, stores, hotels, spas are mere moments away by foot, cab, or TTC. Where in London could you match this collection of urban lifestyle “assets”? The answer would likely be at the eastern end of Mayfair, near Regent Street. For Holt’s, Toronto’s high-end fashion emporium, read Selfridges on Oxford Street. For gourmet restaurants like Sassafraz in Toronto, think The Wolseley in London. For Bay/Wellesley’s near neighbour, the U of T and its brainy Annex neighbour, read Bloomsbury and the University of London. For Soho, across Regent Street from Mayfair, read Toronto’s mini-Soho at Church/Wellesley. BRIT 0008 Main Brochure.indd 68-69 21/08/12 5:07 PM THE NEW BRITISH INVASION Four centuries after the first British pioneers settled in North America, Toronto gears up for a new British invasion. The year 2012 will go down in history as the year of the London Olympics, the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth and a celebration of monarchy and empire. Toronto’s famed Gardiner Museum is hosting a grand exhibit – Rule Brittania – a stirring narrative on four centuries of British style, power and taste. Enriched with history and heritage, this spectacular canvas unfolds at The Britt, in the heart of Toronto at Bay and Wellesley. Like London, Toronto is the one of the most multicultural cities on the planet and so much of the urbane stylish swagger that has defined London life for generations is very much in sync with Toronto’s way of living. In The Britt, Torontonians will be able to experience everything that has made London and British culture so timeless and enduring. At the same time, it will be an ode to the quintessential spirit of Toronto, the emerging new urban powerhouse of the new millennium. Welcome to The Britt Condominiums. Welcome home.
