Headfirst Fearless: WQYK At ACMs
A few dozen stations will be anchored in a
ballroom near the MGM Grand Garden Arena
for Westwood One’s ACM Radio Remote
broadcasts this Friday and Saturday (4/16-17)
and for WQYK/Tampa, the chips are in on a
new concept.
“We’ve been building toward this, but now
Mike Culotta
we get to truly see it in action,” says OM Mike
Culotta. “We weren’t quite at this point for the CMA Music Fest,
we played with it a little more at the CMA Awards, and now we’re
all in headfirst.”
For the station’s first ACM weekend under the PPM system,
‘QYK has adopted an integrated multimedia approach that points
days of preparation, promotion and anticipation squarely at Awards
Sunday (4/18). “We’re going to be recording everything Friday
and Saturday for an all-day ACM Sunday,” Culotta explains. “It
was the only thing that made sense to us based on the schedule.
“Starting at 10am we’ll come out of the Rise Up show and come
back to [morning teamers] Randy and Dave, who will be on the
air all the way through as we countdown to the show, run the red
carpet stuff and then air the awards themselves. It will really be a
theater of the mind experience.”
Culotta says the station has already been in promotion high gear,
touting Randy and Dave live from Vegas on awards day. Saturday,
the plan is to include a dozen or more vignettes of audio from past
ACM Awards – winners being announced, for instance. But the
on-air element is only part of the plan.

Strike Zone: KBWF (The Wolf)/San Francisco middayer Micki
Gamez (second from l) hosted an exclusive bowling pre-party
with Gloriana before Taylor Swift’s stop in San Jose Sunday
(4/11). Gloriana might have had their own shirts, but Wolfpack
listeners threw enough strikes to take home the championship
pins. Pictured are Gloriana’s Tom Gossin (in blue), Rachel Reinert
(in pink), Cheyenne Kimball (in red) and Mike Gossin (in purple)
as well as KBWF PD Mike Krinik (bottom right). Wayne Update: Dangerous Liaison
Passing through Wheeler, TX on his 1,600-mile Meet Me
Halfway walk for homeless teens, Jimmy Wayne crossed a
pair of tough Texans who offered him an overnight stay at their
house. “These guys are best friends, but they fist-fight each other
all the time,” Wayne told us in his weekly update from the road
Thursday (4/8). “One of them had a black eye, [so] they’re not

afraid to throw a punch.” The three
men were settling in for the night
when one handed Wayne a guitar
and asked him to play. “I noticed the
action was bad, so I offered to sand
down the bridge with his mother’s
pumice stone for heel calluses,”
Wayne said. When Wayne put the
guitar back together, he realized he
Jimmy Wayne
had sanded it too low. “I was thinking,
‘They’re going to kick my ass,’” said
Wayne, who played it off like everything was okay. “When I left,
I immediately called my Takamine guitar rep, who rushed to my
rescue and sent them a brand new guitar.” Follow Wayne and his
close calls here.

My Tunes: Music That Shaped My Life
WGGY/Wilkes Barre MD/middayer Jessie
Roberts discusses her most important
songs, artists or concerts:
1. Mary Chapin Carpenter/The Long Way
Home: Sometimes we all need a little
reminder to slow down and enjoy the things
that really matter in life. “Accidents and
inspiration lead you to your destination” is
one of the greatest song lyrics ever written.
Jessie Roberts
2. Johnny Rivers/Secret Agent Man:
This song plays a major role in one of my most vivid childhood
memories. My dad would put this record on and I would stand on
his feet and dance. It still stops me in my tracks when I hear it.
3. Billy Joel/Only The Good Die Young: This is my go-to song
when I need a pick-me-up. How can you not smile while listening
to it?
4. Eric Clapton/Wonderful Tonight: When I was in fourth grade, I
decided this song would be my wedding song. I haven’t changed
my mind.
5. John Mellencamp/I Need A Lover: I’ve been a fan since I could
remember. And c’mon, who can’t relate to this song?
• A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: Oasis’
Be Here Now.
• An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Phish.
• An album you played or listened to incessantly: Eric Church’s
Carolina and The Essential Mary Chapin Carpenter (I’ve played the
CD so many times it skips).
• One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to
right now: Melissa Etheridge’s “I Run For Life.”

her interview and tweet that she’s on. When her interview is over

“For the look and feel back home, we’re going to do an
enormous amount of off-site stuff away from the remotes. We’ll
be interviewing an Elvis, taking pictures in front of the Bellagio
fountains and giving listeners a sense of the build up to the
awards. And the guys will be wearing the same clothes both days
to keep continuity on the video. Then they’ll take a red-eye back
Sunday night and be back here bright and early Monday.”
Having all of Sunday’s content completed in advance offers
advantages. “We think we’ll be able to find a better flow having
everything done before we put it together. We can spread the
interviews out more strategically with an A artist followed by
a baby act, then back to another top artist. Doing it live you
sometimes have two or three baby acts in a row.
“It will also allow us to better promote the artist interviews
since we’ll know what they said. ‘We hear Reba is doing suchand-such. And we’ll ask her about it, coming up next.’ It will
allow us to do a little more teasing.”
Metered ratings and preliminary indications about how
listeners respond to talk and music played a role in planning.
“This entire thing is built around the PPM concept,” Culotta
Range Rover: EMI Nashville’s Troy Olsen hits the radio tour
circuit with a stop at WKKT/Charlotte to promote his selfpenned debut single “Summer Thing.” Pictured (l-r) are VP/
Promotion Angela Lange, APD/MD Ryan Dokke, Olsen, OM/

Promotions Dir. Mark Gray.
Page 6
says. “We want to have the strongest interviews possible, and we
like putting everything in one day instead of spreading it over
two. Listeners have short attention spans.”
The approach is also manpower-effective. “Doing this live
could be easy if we had six or eight people handling all these
responsibilities. But pushing it all into one day really allows
just a couple of people to manage this. Randy and Dave can
do the interviews, they can edit, they can put the tweets and
posts in a delayed queue and then as Sunday unfolds we can
have people at the station post the stuff to the site and send out
tweets in real time.”
The WQYK team hopes
the plan hits the audience at
multiple connection points. “It’s
a new world,” Culotta says.
“We’ve got traditional terrestrial
radio, digital audio, video,
tweeting, texting, Facebooking.
Whatever platform a fan is on, we’ve got a way for them to
connect to this event. We feel like putting it all in one day is in
the best interest of the listeners – they’ll get the best content
possible – as well as the ACM, which will have us pushing
everyone toward that broadcast Sunday night.”
Even so, Culotta may have a tough time keeping his attention
solely on Sunday night’s show. “It’s the same night as the
Celebrity Apprentice, and I was the radio judge on that,” he says.
“We were going to do a whole thing to promote that show, too,
but the ACMs win out. We’ll have to talk about the Apprentice
CAC
somewhere down the line.”
