Sirls Interim At Lyric Street Inside Today`s PPM Numbers Goodman
October 6, 2008 Goodman On Carolwood Launch The launch of Lyric Street sister-imprint Carolwood -detailed in both a Breaking News email and Country Aircheck Today last Thursday (10/2) -- comes during a long period of record industry contraction. We asked Lyric Street/Carolwood President Randy Goodman about the thought process behind building a new promotion team, among other subjects: CA: When and how did you come to the realization you needed a second imprint? RG: I don’t know that I can put a finger on the exact moment. Early on at Lyric Street we were having 11 or 12 releases per year. Maybe more. Then the cycle really began to slow down and singles began to take longer. When your business plans are built on being able to launch albums at 10, 12 or 15 weeks into a single, and then you get into 20, 25 or 30 week Randy Goodman singles, everything is clogged up. At some point you have to look at your alternatives. We’ve been blessed to be brought great music, [but] you get to a place where you’re walking away from some really unique things because you can’t get to them. If I’m inhibited from putting out new music I’m just going to sit here and die a slow death. And that didn’t seem to be a good option. (continued on page 6) Issue 110 Sirls Interim At Lyric Street Longtime RCA promotion vet Mike Sirls is joining Lyric Street as Northeast regional on an interim basis. Sirls will cover the territory formerly manned by Chris Palmer, who has risen to the Co-National post at Carolwood. Reach Sirls at 615-4976125 or [email protected]. Inside Today’s PPM Numbers This afternoon’s Country Aircheck Today featured overviews of the markets that received their first PPM-ascurrency Arbitron ratings today. Here’s a more in-depth look inside the West Coast PPM numbers. KKGO/Los Angeles: Mt. Wilson’s “Go Country” can now lay claim to being the most-listened to Country station in the USA with a weekly cume of 1,101,300. It edges CBS Radio’s WUSN/Chicago which posted a cume of 1,046,800. KKGO’s 2.5 September share 6+ places it 17th in the City of Angels. KBWF (The Wolf)/San Francisco: PD Scott Mahalick tells CA the Wolf’s 6+ cume is “pushing 600,000.” Among the highlights is a midday show that ranks sixth, 25-54 and a morning show that is tied for eighth in that demo. The PPM “surprises” include an 11.9 in teens, which Mahalick notes is tied for second with Clear Channel Urban KMEL. Overall, Mahalick says, “I love the reality measurement. The format’s sweet spot of 35-54 is under sampled by Arbitron at only 80%, so when they correct this we should see a nice pop.” ©2008 Countr y Aircheck™ — All r ights reser ved. S end news to news@countr yaircheck .com October 6, 2008 Country Aircheck Weekly KRTY/San Jose: GM Nate Deaton says of the San Jose PPM numbers, “The biggest surprise is that everything Arbitron said about PPM has really been true here in San Jose. The San Jose stations, which have traditionally been under-sampled in the embedded market, have really risen to the top in PPM. In the September data there are five San Jose stations in the Top 10, as compared to only three in the (diary-driven) Spring book. “KRTY was really sluggish in the last two books, but PPM data shows our strength and puts us back in the Top 5 in adults and Top 3 in Women. The sampling of this market seems to be so much better.” Deaton also notes that PPM has shown major increases in midday listening, which he says comes as a bit of a surprise “for a format that is not a traditional at-work station.” He added that KRTY’s cume is 148,300 as compared to the spring’s 88,200. “The biggest cume we ever had was around 115,000. There are three San Jose Stations over 375,000.” Readers: Crass Isn’t Greener The ol’ inbox was full of responses to last week’s editorial condemning the vulgarities permeating today’s Country radio airwaves. All listed below agreed with our view, and we would have printed opposing opinions but, honestly, didn’t get any. If you think we’re old fuddy-duddies who don’t get today’s on-air humor, let us know and we’ll print your comments. View the editorial in the Weekly archives (9/29) at www.countryaircheck.com. Nashville Promotion Executive: “From certain radio personalities taking cheap shots at my artists during on-air interviews, to the need to be the funny guy at the artist’s expense (which makes everyone look stupid, especially the jock), I wonder how these personalities expect the listeners to take their entire on air-product seriously. When our artists are exposed to this type of behavior, we essentially boycott that jock no matter how great the potential exposure.” Gerry House, WSIX/Nashville morning personality, who was referenced in the editorial: “Dirty/juvenile/crude is so easy. I just can’t believe listeners aren’t tired of it. But, when it’s everywhere, I think the listener is sort of numb. I also refuse to Page 2 My Tunes: Music That Shaped My Life Wortman Works owner Jules Wortman discusses her five most important songs, albums or concerts: 1. Bruce Springsteen, The River Tour, 1981: The last stop in the tour was at Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati. It was full throttle energy and set the pace for my high school years. 2. Bruce Springsteen, “Thunder Road”: The song. The lyrics. Life. What a statement. 3. James Taylor, “Your Smiling Face”: Jules Wortman Another lyrical genius who marked my love of singer/songwriters. This is a perfect song. 4. “How Great Thou Art”: Without God and the greatest of his word, what is there? 5. John Hiatt, Guy Clark, Joe Ely, Lyle Lovett: The Marlboro Music Songwriters in the Round Tour played the Chicago Theater in 1990. Amazing. • A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: Timbaland, Timbaland Presents Shock Value. • An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Enya. • An album you played or listened to incessantly: SheDaisy, Knock on the Sky. • One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: John Gorka’s “Prom Night In Pigtown.” let anyone even mention the word prude. It’s not old and out of touch to want to hear pleasant things, especially early in the morning. The folks I know just want to laugh and not have to explain some dipwad’s comments to their kids. Is that too much to ask? And, ‘freakin’/frickin’/friggin’’ drive me up the wall. Don’t be such a weasel you can’t even say the real word. If it’s that important, go ahead and say it and get fired.” Nate Deaton, KRTY/San Jose GM: “We have the one type of music that folks feel they can listen to in the car with kids. Why ruin that with content from jocks? From what I am seeing in PPM, folks turn it off. The crass, dirty stuff has no place on commercial country radio.” Bill Hagy, WXBQ/Johnson City, TN PD: “Just imagine how much better station numbers could be if the talent only understood ‘Suzy’ sometimes becomes uncomfortable trying to screen the over-the-line crassness from her soccer playing ©2008 Country Aircheck™ — All rights reserved. It is possible to communicate your point of view without this word.” John Shomby, Max Media/Norfolk Dir./Programming & Ops: “We haven’t been developing talent for years -- and that’s where it starts. Too many groups hire personalities who can ‘get attention’ rather than bond with the audience and actually develop an ongoing relationship. The airchecks I get on a daily basis are perfect examples.” Claire Ratliff-Sears, Laughing Penguin Publicity: “I have loved radio since I was in elementary school. Radio was a friend, a guest in our home. What I don’t love? The lowbrow, scatalogical, infantile, sexual, “easy” humor of many talking heads, boldly and rudely coming into my home or my car regardless of who else may be in my company. That’s being a lousy guest. Sure, I have the liberty of changing the station, just like my friends have the option of never inviting me back into their homes if I am a lousy guest. But why would I risk that with my friends?” A CA “Soccer Mom” Reader: “‘Suzy’ might actually turn off her iPod if those morning guys didn’t remind her of sitting in eighth-grade health class.” Bob Moody, Regent VP/Programming: “(There is an) increasing failure of many air personalities to reflect the values of their listeners. More and more morning shows are so selfcentered that I suspect they are serving as a substitute for therapy. The focus is entirely on the jock, who is often trying to portray an image that much of the audience would find repulsive. The really great personalities in our format -- including Gerry House -- come across as someone you would like to be friends with. They generally talk about themselves only to introduce a subject with universal appeal. That’s a long way from assholes and boogers and childish posturing. ‘Focus on the listener’ is a major theme when I work with Regent’s on-air talent (in all dayparts). It ain’t a matter of being a dinosaur or not; it’s a matter of common sense and good business practices.” ©2008 Country Aircheck™ — All rights reserved. Sign up free at www.countryaircheck.com. Sunday night’s Belmont University-themed Grand Ole Opry may have brought out alums Brad Paisley, Trisha Yearwood, Josh Turner and Julie Roberts, as well as Darius Rucker, but it was CBS newsman Bob Schieffer who stole the show. The Face The Nation host performed two songs and later joined Paisley on stage. Curb’s Bomshel will perform at the Belmont Block Party on campus prior to the debate. The event will also feature local bands, and will have a number of national news outlets broadcasting live from Face Maker: Darius Rucker, Bob the area. Songwriter Gretchen Peters is donating royalties from her song “Independence Day” to Planned Parenthood in the name of Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin after Palin was brought onstage to the song following the recent VP debate. Peters says the GOP’s use overlooks the song’s “context and message...to promote a candidate who would set womens’ rights back decades.” Bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley is showing up on political blogs, as his new radio spot endorsing Obama (listen here) has been cited as part of a micro-targeted radio strategy. (CAT 10/6) Goodman On Carolwood (continued from page 1) Did you have to do much convincing in Los Angeles? Most major media companies are in a hiring freeze. [Buena Vista Music Group Chairman] Bob Cavallo is such a music guy, so I played him some of the new music we were working on. He finally said, “You’re going to tell me now that you can’t get to this. Right?” He was very perceptive and got where I was leading him. If I had walked in there and tried to make a business case for this, I wouldn’t have gotten anywhere. Because he was really taken by the music, he became an advocate for us Page 6 in the company and really made this thing happen. What will the roster look like? The plan was to make the organizational announcement and within two weeks’ time make the creative announcement. Our hope is to have a first single from a known quantity before the end of this year. Beginning next year we’ll be launching our first new act. Is there the possibility that a current Lyric Street artist could be moving over? One of the things I wanted to do, as we did launching Lyric Street, was to start with a known quantity. So there have been discussions of moving an act over and having them be the initial driver. But at the end of the day the initial artist will not come from Lyric Street. They will be newly signed. Will the artist deals be structured differently? No. Overall, deals are morphing and changing organically. The marketplace is changing with such velocity that we’re looking constantly at that, but we won’t be doing something completely foreign to what’s going on at Lyric Street. You seem to be bullish at a time when much of the record industry is pulling back. Is that simply about the music? It’s also about the product flow. Even though our business is in decline, our model is to be venture capitalists in the music business. We invest in artists and look to build them into a brand. The length of time for singles to develop has doubled, and we had to find a way to be more aggressive. This is the only way I could really see to grow my business without flooding Lyric Street to the point where we had no focus. - Lon Helton, [email protected] Chuck Aly, [email protected] Erin Duvall, [email protected] (615) 320-1450 ©2008 Country Aircheck™ — All rights reserved.
