January 28, 2008 Will CC’s Q1 Freeze Chill CRS? By now you’ve either heard about – or probably even read – the memo from Clear Channel Radio President/CEO John Hogan outlining the first quarter contingency plan that must be adhered to by all stations. But what is the on-the-frontlines reality of the missive and, even closer to home, what will it mean for the upcoming Country Radio Seminar? Hogan’s Friday morning memo to upper management noted the company is “generating less revenue for Q1 than we budgeted and less than what actually ran last year. At the same John Hogan time, our budgeted expenses for Q1 are up 4%. As responsible managers, we need to address the shortfall not only by continuing to find ways to increase our revenue but also by implementing cuts on the expense side until revenue production improves.” Hogan then itemized the ways in which the Q1 budgets would be trimmed: “All research monies after 2/1. All advertising and promotion monies after 2/1. All new sales hire guarantees not already implemented effective immediately (do NOT hire any additional sales people, effective immediately). Any new hires budgeted but not hired, effective immediately (do not hire any additional new employees). Any/all discretionary monies (i.e. travel, meals and entertainment, etc.) for your market. If you can save it, do so. Additionally, you are not to replace any departing personnel without specific approval from your EVPO.” continued on page 2 Garth’s LA Story Issue 74 The two-day, five-show Garth Brooks concert run benefiting the Southern California 2008 Fire Relief Campaign opened at 9pm ET at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, and America was watching. According to ratings on Zap2it.com, the CBS telecast of Garth Brooks: Live In LA propelled the network to a prime time win, leading the time slot with a 5.1/8, edging FOX’s House at 4.9/8. Among the sold-out crowd of 85,000 were several prominent Country radio programmers, who offered their perspective to Country Aircheck. KWNR/Las Vegas PD Cary Rolfe went to the 6pm show Friday. “I drove over from Vegas and saw several cars with ‘Garth or Bust’ painted in the windows,” he says. “When I arrived at the Staples Center it was obvious there was something going on that would not be considered the norm for downtown LA – parking lots packed with pickup trucks and people tailgating with country music blaring.” As for the show, Rolfe says it was almost like Garth never left. “There was electricity in the air as if everyone was going to explode with excitement at any moment. Then Garth hit the stage like he was shot out of a cannon and it only ratcheted the crowd up to a fever pitch. At times the crowd was so loud you couldn’t hear Garth singing over them.” continued on page 6 ©2008 Country Aircheck™ — All rights reserved. Sign up free at www.countr yaircheck.com. Almost all HD2 roll-outs are now on hold. As one CC PD said, “If it’s not already paid for, it isn’t going to happen – no matter what it is.” In our world, that also means fewer Clear Channel faces at this year’s CRS, set for March 5-7 here in Nashville. A major market CC programmer told Country Aircheck that while a couple of staffers are all set to make the trip, he had intended to bring two or three other station folks with him. “That ain’t going to happen now,” he said. “The only reason I get to come is everything has been paid for already.” And, while it’s hard to find any gray area in “if you can save it, do so,” there are some questions in CC programmer’s minds about CRS. One CC PD told CA, “I’m registered for CRS and have booked my flight. But I’m not sure if the company wants to save the airfare, hotel and incidentals that I would be spending and just eat the registration fee.” That will likely be answered very quickly. Finally, CC PDs interviewed for this piece said they fully expect the spending freeze to last far beyond March 31. All cited the impending merger agreement with a private equity group co-led by Bain Capital Partners and Thomas H. Lee partners as the reason. Said one, “It’s hard to imagine venture capitalists spending $27 billion for Clear Channel to not look for more ways to cut costs. And, as I understand it, we won’t be getting back the money in the future that we aren’t spending this quarter.” KKGO Knocked Off Air The Country-positive momentum of Garth’s LA throwdown was interrupted when inclement weather on Mount Wilson knocked KKGO off the air for 24 hours beginning at 10:15am Saturday (1/26). Ice damaged a station antenna, and snow caused a roof failure that allowed water to damage an auxiliary transmitter. With roads to the mountain closed by the storm and helicopters unable to fly, KKGO wasn’t back on air until Sunday. CBS Radio KROQ offered Page 3 Date Check Feb. 8 - 50th Annual Grammy Awards - www.grammy.com March 5-7 - CRS-39 - www.crb.org April 1-5 - Tin Pan South Songwriters Festival April 22 - Leadership Music Digital Summit 2007 - Belmont University’s Curb Event Center - www.leadershipmusic.org May 18 - The 43rd Annual ACM Awards - MGM Grand Las Vegas, NV - www. acmcountry.com June 5-8 - CMA Music Festival - www.cmaworld.com Full calendar info at www.countryaircheck.com the station its Flint Peak-based auxiliary site, putting Country back on in LA. “The fortunate thing was we did our live broadcast [from the Staples Center] on Friday,” says KKGO Marketing Director Michael Levine. “Obviously it’s disappointing to be down with so many people listening on the way to Garth. And we were going to do some live call-ins. But there’s never a good time to be off the air.” Radio News Management: Industry vet Richard Hinshaw has joined Pamal Broadcasting/Gainesville-Ocala, which includes Classic Country WDVH-FM & AM, as GM, effective Jan. 25. As we reported Friday, in one day over $100,000 had been raised for the T.J. Martell Foundation. Over the course of the trip participants took to the slopes and a few mishaps occurred. Last Thursday, headliner Eddie Montgomery’s wife Tracy tore two ligaments and the meniscus in one knee during her first attempt at skiing. She is expected to make a full recovery after undergoing surgery. Tracy Montgomery Country Music Across America host Storme Warren decided to celebrate Saturday after raising $60,000 from a celebrity bartending contest with Tom Gross and Gary Chapman. As he started down the mountain he noticed his bindings were loose, and explains, “I had to decide between crashing my head or my shoulder. I think I chose wisely.” Warren has a bone chip inducing dislocation in his shoulder and will head into surgery on Friday. “This is just what I wanted to do to get into Country Aircheck,” he says. Garth Continued “Everywhere you looked there were cowboy hats and a unique mix of people, Garth truly draws from every walk of life. It was great to see people you knew had just driven in from the ranch (they were the ones with ‘stuff’ on their boots) and the people with $200 jeans and Versace bags standing side by side singing every word.” Cary Rolfe Ray Massie, PD for KNIX/ Phoenix, says the show was a great reminder. “I had forgotten just how incredible Garth is in concert,” he admits. “It was just absolutely astounding. I’ve never seen any artist be able to Ray Massie control an entire crowd with a move of his head...or a look in his eye.” KMPS/Seattle did a major getaway promotion around the shows, offering winners a Garth Trip-A-Day. Five winners and guests flew in for the show, as did PD Becky Brenner. “Garth is amazing,” she says. “He Becky Brenner has the same charisma and magic as Elvis... From the moment he hit the stage, we never sat down, and at the end we wanted more! We were totally energized and didn’t even feel like we had been standing for two hours-plus.
