Issue 11 Music Edition HOF Welcomes Acree, Daniels, Moody, Ladd and Trimble February 27, 2007, the night before CRS-38 gets underway, will be a big night for five of Country radio’s top broadcasters. As we told you in a Country Aircheck Breaking News Bulletin this afternoon, veteran Country programmer Les Acree, Daniels Country Radio Resources President Larry Daniels and Regent VP/Programming Bob Moody have been elected to the Country Radio Hall of Fame. Longtime KIKK/Houston air talent Joe Ladd and WXGI/Richmond, VA PD/afternoon host “Big” John Trimble have been selected as the newest inductees into the Country Music DJ Hall Of Fame. Larry Daniels’ induction coincides with his 50th anniversary in the radio industry. His career began in 1957 while in high school at KGEN/Tulare, CA. He rose to PD two years later. From 1961-68 he was PD of KUZZ/Bakersfield, CA, where he also did mornings. He moved on to KMAX/Fresno and in 1971 joined the Buck Owens-owned KTUF-AM & KNIX/Phoenix where he worked until 1999. Bob Moody started in radio at age 16 at KOTN/Pine Bluff, AR. His radio odyssey took him through KTG/Columbia, MO and KKEG/Fayetteville, AR while still in college. After graduation he worked at WOAI/San Antonio, KTLK/Denver, CO, CKLW/Detroit (as “Cosmic Bob”) and WAKY/Louisville, KY. He moved to Country as PD of KRMD/Shreveport, LA, where the 12+ ratings soared from 3.7 to 18.4 in less than eighteen months. Summer ARBs: Beyond the 12+ There’s always more to any radio station’s ratings story than the 12+ numbers show. Here are a few more success stories, and we encourage you to send in your “beyond the 12+” triumphs to [email protected]. Detroit: The Country share was the big winner in Detroit, where WYCD and newcomer WDTW (The Fox) combined for 6.3 12+ shares, over a share more than the 5.2 WYCD posted in Spring 2006, its best 12+ book in the past year. CBS Radio’s WYCD moved 5.2-3.6 while Clear Channel’s Fox debuted with a 2.7 (16th). (The Fox turned Country May 19.) Among 25-54’s, WYCD posted a 3.6 to the Fox’s 3.3. Much of the Fox’s strength was in younger demos, where it actually beat WYCD 18-34, 4.5 to 3.9. Grand Rapids: A stellar book in Grand Rapids for WBCT PD Doug Montgomery and his gang. The 9.1-9.7 12+ move -good for first -- was accompanied by double-digit shares in both 25-54 and 18-49. WBCT posted a market-leading 10.8, 25-54 and a 10.2, 18-49. Oklahoma City: Clear Channel/OKC Director/Programming Tom Travis has Country KTST (The Twister) and KXXY under his wing, and he was extremely proud of the Twister’s summer Arbitron. For the first time in the station’s 13-year life, it hit No. 1 12+, moving 6.2-6.3. The Twister also posted No. 1 rankings among Persons 18-49 and Women 18-49. A thrilled Travis noted, “It’s a big accomplishment for the staffers who have been here for so long working hard and listening to my B.S.” Page Date Check November 4 - 54th Annual BMI Country Awards. www.bmi.com November 6 - 40th Annual CMA Awards. www.cmaawards.com November 5 - SESAC Country Awards. www.sesac.com February 27 - Country Radio & DJ Hall of Fame Dinner. www.crb.org February 28 to March 2 - CRS-38. www.crb.org Full CMA Board Listing Artist manager Clarence Spalding has been elected President of the CMA Board, effective with the new board year starting Nov. 7. SESAC has opened an Atlanta office, with Capp Scates being named Associate Director/Writer-Publisher Relations with oversight of the new outpost. Hot Air An official announcement about the long-rumored transition at Universal South may came within the next 48 hours. Unofficially, it looks like Columbia Exec. VP/A&R Mark Wright will be running the label going forward. The change likely brings to an end the tenure of Senior Partners Tim DuBois and Tony Brown who launched the label in partnership with Universal. Their next moves, as well as the continuing composition of Universal South’s staff and artist roster, aren’t yet clear. We do know that with the clock winding down on the original five-year deal between DuBois, Brown and Universal, DuBois made an attempt to acquire the label’s assets. Universal’s rejection of that proposal precipitated this impending management change and kicked up a Santa Ana windstorm of speculation over the last few days. Benefit News The third annual Robynn Jaymes Pajama Jam breast cancer awareness event raised $30,000 for the American Cancer Society over the weekend. Held in Roanoke, VA, the benefit featured performances from Mark Wills, Blue County, Megan Mullins and Jamie O’Neal’s three-year-old daughter Aliya. Jamie was suffering from laryngitis.
