Issue 25 Music Edition Underwood Takes Two At Disconnected Grammys Arista’s Carrie Underwood was a big winner at last night’s 49th Annual Grammy Awards, taking the all-genre New Artist honor as well as Female Country Vocal Performance for “Jesus, Take The Wheel.” Vince Gill’s “The Reason Why” landed the Male Country Vocal Performance award, and Bon Jovi and Jennifer Nettles took Country Collaboration for “Who Says You Can’t Go Home.” Other Nashville-related winners include Country Song “Jesus, Take The Wheel” by Brett James, Hillary Lindsey and Gordie Sampson; and Randy Travis’ Glory Train for Southern, Country or Bluegrass Gospel Album. The Dixie Chicks won in the Country Album and Country Duo or Group categories. Once again, however, the Recording Academy displayed a total disconnect between its awards and performances and the Country radio listener and country record buyer. While Underwood and Rascal Flatts did a fabulous job on their tributes to Bob Wills and the Eagles, it’s a travesty that two of our brightest stars couldn’t sing one of their own songs. I doubt reprising an old Eagles tune helped either of their record sales. As for the Chicks, some have wondered whether their five wins would mean more Country airplay. But it’s hard to imagine the airplay volume changing when the vast majority of PDs interviewed by Country Aircheck said February 12, 2007 Holiday Closing Country Aircheck will be closed Monday, Feb. 19 in observance of the President’s Day holiday. All Country Aircheck Mediabase monitored reporters can submit station adds via www.airplayaddboard.com any time from this Thursday (2/15) until 3pm ET/Noon PT on Tuesday, Feb. 20. Country Aircheck non-monitored Activator reporters may submit their full reports any time during that same time frame. The Country Aircheck Music Edition will be delivered Tuesday evening, Feb. 20. talk of the Chicks was slim or non-existent in the wake of the Grammys. “The morning show did introduce the subject,” says WXBQ/Johnson City-Bristol, TN-VA PD Bill Hagy. “But listeners were mostly not interested.” In Boston, WKLB PD Mike Brophey says his morning team opted not to discuss the Chicks. “The Grammy’s aren’t a huge rallying point for us,” he says. “But we did talk about Carrie Underwood quite a bit.” (continued on page 5) Dee Back At The Beach Cumulus WYAK/Myrtle Beach has hired Country radio vet Joey Dee as PD/afternoon host, effective today. Wichita A Crow-Free Zone The teapot tempest that KFDI/Wichita, KS morning man Dan Tooker has dubbed Crowgate 2007 has taken a revelatory turn. As you may recall, a Revlon Super Bowl ad featured Sheryl Crow purportedly on tour using one of the company’s hair colors -- and the spot referenced a Wichita tour stop that never happened. Tooker and company cried foul, demanding an explanation from Revlon and Crow, as well as a free concert for the city. Revlon’s response: “To answer your question, no Sheryl Crow was not in Wichita on tour. To best depict the ©2 0 0 7 Co u nt r y Ai rc h e c k ™ — Al l r i g ht s re s e r ve d. However, Sheryl Crow does use the product (# 80, Medium Blonde). Also, please note that 100% of the proceeds from [downloadable single] ‘Not Fade Away’ go to the Revlon/UCLA Women’s Cancer Research Program.” No word yet from Crow. Music News Warner Bros. will release Big & Rich’s third album Between Raising Hell And Amazing Grace on June 5. The first single is “Lost In This Moment.” The duo’s first book, Big & Rich: All Access, also goes to retail on June 5. Montage Music Group has signed vocalist Minnie Murphy to a recording contract. At this point it will not affect our position on airplay.” “The Grammys are hardly a mandate for the return of the Chicks,” says WGKX/Memphis PD Lance Tidwell. “I don’t read much into this with regard to P1s and the Country life group.” Overall, the Grammy process continues to raise questions. “There’s a general consensus among those in the industry that the Grammys have never really accurately reflected what was going on in mainstream country music,” says WKIS/Miami PD Bob Barnett. “I get the whole liberal-artsy-fartsy non-mainstream Grammy mindset, but over the years the nominees and the winners have been so off it’s been almost laughable.” As for the future of the Dixie Chicks and Country radio, KEEY/Minneapolis PD Gregg Swedberg says, “Almost everyone -- except perhaps the most politically driven -- wants this [Chicks controversy] to be done. But this whole CD has never really been about just the music. It’s about the argument, which is a shame. I don’t know when the right wing gets over what Natalie said, and I don’t know when the left wing gets tired of vilifying anyone who chose not to play the record.” - Lon Helton, [email protected] Chuck Aly, [email protected] (615) 244-4484 © 2 0 0 7 Co u nt r y Ai rc h e c k ™ — Al l r i g ht s re s e r ve d.
