Issue 93 - June 9, 2008
June 9, 2008 CMAMF Sets New Attendance Mark All 50 states and 28 countries, including Brazil, Greece, Japan and Latvia – were represented in the tens of thousands of fans who were in Nashville for CMA Music Festival (6/5-6/8). With a stated attendance increase of 9.4% over last year’s 191,000 aggregate, 2008 clocked in with almost 209,000 over the four-day event – a new record. That number has not been officially released by CMA, however, as the trade organization is instead focusing on daily attendance figures. This year’s average daily attendance was 52,000, up from last year’s 48,000. “We made a decision this year to announce our attendance as a Rodney Atkins daily average rather than Faith Hill a four-day aggregate so people are not overwhelmed by a huge number and potentially turned off from attending the Festival because they are concerned about parking or moving around downtown,” CMA CEO Tammy Genovese says. “It is actually much easier than people think and we want to communicate that in a Jamey Johnson Julianne Hough new way.” Issue 93 Fans don’t seem dissuaded by the crowds, however, as 2009 sales are already on a record-setting pace, up 4.2%. Gold Circle four-day passes sold out in an unprecedented 15 minutes Saturday. As always, half of net proceeds benefit Nashville music education. Check pages 5 & 6 for photo coverage of this year’s festival. About Face With Universal South The sidewalk isn’t the most conventional spot for signage, but Universal South’s concrete graphics (pictured) sure made an impression during the festival. Country Aircheck ran into Sr. VP/GM Van Fletcher Thursday morning and asked if the label had permission for the floor-borne fliers. “Yeah, but we almost got arrested anyway,” Fletcher said. Bruce Burton, the label’s Manager/National Sales & Marketing, came up with the campaign. “They’ve been used in sports marketing for a while,” he says. “A guy who makes our promo items pitched me on them. We got permission from the city, but still ran into problems. “As we were putting them down, the police pulled up and asked what we were doing. We told them we had permission so they called the mayor’s office, who said they had no idea who we were or what we were doing. So we sat in the sun for an hour waiting while everyone called around and figured out it was okay.” ©2008 Countr y Aircheck™ — All r ights reser ved. Sign up free at w w w.countr yaircheck .com. S end news to news@countr yaircheck .com Country Aircheck Weekly June 9, 2008 Burton says the label’s artists appreciated the “face” time. “Fans were coming up to them saying, ‘I’ve been walking all over you all week.’” The fun part, Burton adds, was pulling the graphics back up once the festival was over. “Some of them came up easy, but most were rather difficult.” Their Home’s In Ft. Payne, AL Alabama’s Randy Owen, Teddy Gentry, Jeff Cook and Mark Herndon were immortalized in Ft. Payne, AL Saturday (6/7) with the unveiling of larger-than-life bronze statues of the Country Music Hall of Fame quartet. Country Aircheck intrepid reporter Keith Gale – who doubles as RCA/Nashville VP/Promotion in his spare time – attended the event and told CA, “Jeff Cook spoke about how he was a little sad that his dad was not here to witness this day; that he sold auto parts in a store directly across the street for 40 years. Mark Herndon told me he was ‘finally in a heavy metal band.’ Teddy Gentry was so moved he shed tears and could barely speak. Randy spoke about how many generations of Owen’s have lived in Ft. Payne and how this was also an honor to all of them.” The shrine honoring the foursome is in the Ft. Payne City Park at Gault Ave. and 4th St. NE. In other Alabama band news, Randy Owen is in Washington, DC tonight to accept an NAB Education Foundation Service To America Samaritan Award on behalf of Country Cares For St. Jude Kids. It is given to a broadcaster or organization exemplifying the industry’s commitment to use the airwaves effectively in promoting the public interest.
