WIVK No. 1 For 104 Straight Books
Issue 24 Music Edition WIVK No. 1 For 104 Straight Books; Women Love KBEQ Last week’s ratings wrap contained the amazing news that WXBQ/Johnson City-Kingsport-Bristol, TN-VA marked 49 consecutive No. 1 books (12+) with its fall 2006 win and WUSY/Chattanooga notched an incredible 67th consecutive No. 1 with its fall victory. With all our historical data locked in another computer somewhere, we wondered where that left WIVK/Knoxville. To our rescue came KSCS & KTYS/Dallas APD/MD Chris Huff, a man with the distinction of having worked at both WUSY and WIVK. Huff gave Country Aircheck the ratings lowdown. “WIVK has been No. 1 12+ for 104 consecutive books dating back to April/May 1972.” he said. “This includes simulcast numbers for WIVK-AM before the FM went solo in 1988. The FM by itself has been No. 1 since A/M 1979. Even more amazing, there have only been106 Arbitron survey periods in Knoxville. The market was first measured by Arbitron in A/M 1970 and WIVK-AM&FM were No. 1 with a 20.3. WIVK’s Top 40 competitor, WNOX 990, won the A/M 1971 book. And that remains the only Knoxville book ever in which WIVK was not the No. 1 station in Knoxville.” Kansas City Star: Kansas City’s three-way FM Country battle has been in the forefront of the news lately. Among the highlights: CBS Radio sold Country combo KBEQ & KFKF to Wilks in Oct. 2006 and took control under February 5, 2007 an LMA last November prior to the sale closing. About a month ago, Entercom’s WDAF changed identities to The Wolf. During that time, there have also been a lot of airstaff changes at all three stations, including major shifts in drive-time jocks, all of which we’ve chronicled. But how about the fall book? KBEQ took over the 12+ Country lead with a 4.5-4.9 move, which was good for a leap from eighth to fourth. WDAF fell 4.8-4.7, and from a tie for fourth to fifth. KFKF eased 4.3-4.1, but moved from a tie for tenth to ninth. KBEQ’s story isn’t in the 12+, however. It set a number of high-water marks Taking us beyond the 12+ numbers, KBEQ PD Mike Kennedy told Country Aircheck, “Even in the face of a bunch of Christmas music we did pretty good with women. While we were fourth in Adults 25-54, we were No. 1 18-49 Women. The morning show was No. 1 with an 11.1, the highest in station history; middays was also No. 1 in that demo. Among Women 25-44, mornings had a 12.5, the highest in station history. We were No. 1 (in that demo) in middays, too. In 25-54 Women, mornings was No. 1 with a 10.1, also the highest number in station history. KBEQ was No. 2 among Women 35-64.” Christensen Back For Universal South Promotion veteran Rhonda Christensen is returning to the record biz after an almost two year absence, starting in two weeks as Universal South’s West Coast ©2 0 0 7 Co u nt r y Ai rc h e c k ™ — Al l r i g ht s re s e r ve d. S e n d n e ws to [email protected] Country Aircheck Music Edition February 5, 2007 Page Fall No. 1s: KATC, WRNS, KTST, WCTK, KWEN, KFDI One of the fall book’s top stories has to be that of KATC/Colorado Springs. This Citadel station debuted at the end of last June and in just two books has rocketed to No. 1 12+. Its summer-fall move of 4.5-7.4 boosted it from eleventh to first. Under the heading of “the rich get richer,” Three of the six No.1 finishers tacked on healthy gains to their already market-leading numbers. WRNS/Greenville-New Bern moved up 11.5-13.1, KWEN/Tulsa increased 8.1-9.5 and KFDI/Wichita gained 11.4-13.1. The other two No.1s posted gains, with KTST moving 6.3-6.9 and WCTK increasing 7.5-7.9. A “+” indicates a Classic Country outlet, a “^” designates Country stations in the same market owned by a single operator and an “*” indicates a tie.
