Issue 23 Music Edition Ratings: Country Radio Is On Fire This week’s ratings have a decidedly positive spin... depending on your perspective. A succession of Regent successes has secessionist historian Bob Moody not so blue, Country’s Appalachian appeal is driving huge numbers on the Tennessee-Virginia border, and the cards are turning up aces in Atlantic City. But first to the Seattle battle, where KKWF is giving KMPS a run for its Starbucks. Sleepless In Seattle: An amazing battle is developing between heritage KMPS and KKWF (The Wolf). Since debuting in Dec. 2005, the Wolf has posted 12+ shares (Wi’ 06 to Fa ‘06) of 3.4, 3.8, 3.5 and 3.7. Over that same span, KMPS has gone 5.4, 4.9, 5.4 and 3.7. Looking behind the numbers, Wolf architect Scott Mahalick notes KKWF actually beats KMPS in TSL in the fall. He told Country Aircheck, “In the original strategic plan for the creation of the Wolf, the first benchmark goal was to achieve ratings parity with KMPS in Adults 25-54 by Fall 2006. We’ve exceeded that goal.” Indeed, Mahalick says that the Wolf edged KMPS 4.0 to 3.8, 25-54. The two stations are tied for fourth 12+. You can bet this battle is far from done. (continued on page 5) Rector Helms Columbia Promotion As reported in a Breaking News email this morning (1/29), Raybaw Records promotion head Jimmy Rector has been hired as VP/National Promotion for Columbia/ Nashville, filling the slot left vacant with last week’s exit of Larry Pareigis. The move from Warner Bros.’ MuzikMafia imprint returns Rector to the Sony BMG January 29, 2007 family, where he worked for nearly seven years rising to Southeast regional for BNA prior to leaving for Raybaw last April. Reporting to Exec. VP Butch Waugh, Rector starts Feb. 1. According to Rector, the Raybaw board of directors is not expected to fill the position in the short term. WDAF Debuts Newest Howlers WDAF/Kansas City has begun to slowly deploy an airstaff as it continues its transformation into Entercom’s latest Wolf. The Wilhite & Wall morning show is now known as “Wake-Up with the Wolf, with Darren, Tim and Codie.” That would be Darren Wilhite, Tim Wall and recent addition Codie Allen, who had been Shotgun Jackson’s PM drive sidekick at crosstown KBEQ. Laurie Arbore made her daytime debut today and will hold down Noon-6pm until Shotgun is done sitting out a non-compete and can join the Wolf for afternoons. Arbore has been doing nights for WDAF for the last six months. Olsen To Show Dog Sony BMG Associate Director/Sales & Research P.J. Olsen has joined Show Dog Nashville as Director/ Research & Information Systems, effective today (1/29). Olsen’s background includes stops at Premiere Radio Networks/Mediabase, Hollywood Records, MCA/Decca, Curb, WLOL/Minneapolis and KEGL/Dallas. A&O Still Want You Last week we detailed the agenda for the upcoming Albright & O’Malley Pre-CRS Seminar. A couple things have changed since then, plus we wanted to tell you how to sign-up. The day gets underway at 7:15am with a Continental ©2 0 0 7 Co u nt r y Ai rc h e c k ™ — Al l r i g ht s re s e r ve d. To s u b s c r i b e v i s i t www.countryaircheck.com Country Aircheck Music Edition January 29, 2007 Breakfast sponsored by Country Aircheck. I’ll be there (those who know me can stop laughing now) to welcome you and detail the “All For The Hall” Country Radio Challenge, which seeks radio’s support of the Country Music Hall Of Fame and Museum. The first session with Arbitron’s Gary Marince now begins at 7:30am in order to be done by the time the first official CRS event kicksoff. The rest of the agenda remains as outlined last week -- the start-times are just bumped up a hair. And, instead of new Lyric Street artist Marcel closing the proceedings, the label’s Bucky Covington will do the honors. If you’d like to join us, please contact Michael O’Malley at 732 937-5757, [email protected] or Jaye Albright at 206 498-6261, [email protected] for an invite. Promotion of the Week: KYGO CMA Award winning KYGO/Denver morning cohosts Kelly Ford and Mudflap have invited listeners to help them show soldiers and their families that KYGO and the Mile High City have a “Big Heart.” The duo are gathering the faithful on Valentine’s Day at Invesco Field, home of the Denver Broncos, for a massive “Human Valentine” that will be distributed via the internet. Listeners will line the field between the 25-yard lines and across the entire field, forming a heart-shaped American Flag. 903 Music artist Darryl Worley, a Bronco and a number of local celebs will be on hand for the festivities as they send a message of love and support to US troops all over the world. No word on whether any US Senators will be joining in this non-binding show of support. Radio News Racing: WYGY/Cincinnati is adding NASCAR to its lineup, including Nextel Cup, Busch Series and Craftsman Truck Series races. Kudos: Regent’s WFYR/Peoria, IL is rounding up teddy bears as Valentine’s Day gifts for sick kids and siblings at Children’s Hospital of Illinois. OM Bill Hagy reports that WXBQ’s first place 23.9 marks the 49th consecutive -- yes 49th -- and yes, consecutive -- book that WXBQ has been No.1. Is that a record? Amazingly, no. If my math is right, WUSY/ Chattanooga’s Fall 2006 ARB of 17.8 (12+) marks its 67th consecutive No.1 book. WIVK/Knoxville was also No. 1 12+ once again, with a 23.5. We’re not sure how many consecutive books they’ve been No. 1, but I’m sure OM Mike Hammond will let us know by this time tomorrow. We’ll let you know next week. >Even Trump Takes Notice: WPUR/Atlantic City PD Joe Kelly and staff are still partying following their stellar fall book. Kelly reports No. 1 rankings “across the board: 12+, P25-54 and even Men 25-54,” he says. “All day and mornings --both tops. Can’t get better than that.” WPUR’s ascendancy to No. 1 has capped a three-book run that has seen the Millenium Radio Group outlet rocket 5.8-8.3-9.5. - Lon Helton, [email protected] Chuck Aly, [email protected] (615) 244-4484 ©2 0 0 7 Co u nt r y Ai rc h e c k ™ — Al l r i g ht s re s e r ve d.
