As I was working in an international company, I saw the need of improving my English as well as getting to know other cultures. I have never been to a Nordic country, but I was keen on getting to know the "north?! I applied in Sweden, Finland and Denmark at Siemens and Fujitsu Siemens Computers as well as in the USA. Then I heard from my renter in Augsburg that their nephew is doing an internship in Brande, Denmark, at Siemens Wind Power and I should contact him. So I did. I told him in which area I would like to work and within one week and one phone call with my current boss - I got the job ;-)! GD Bildung und Kultur - Programm für lebenslanges Lernen 1/4 Journey and living After that our team assistant contacted me to sign my contract of employment (well-paid) and to tell me that she already signed me in for an apartment. She told me that I could stay at an apartment house in Brande owned by SWP, 2 minutes walking to the company. My apartment had an own bathroom and a shared kitchen. I entered the room and felt comfortable. It was bigger than I imagined before. With one plug in, my internet ran and the TV had more international and German programs than I usually have at home. That was fantastic! I didn?t have any trouble but a lot support to organize living in Brande. Everything was running by itself! Brande is a town with 8800 citizens at the very countryside, located in the center of Jutland. I was told that I have to have a car, if I want to travel or even if I want to go out for a coffee or shopping to a bigger city. In Brande there are a lot of supermarkets, a fitness center, a bowling center, several opportunities to do sports, a station and 2-3 shops to buy clothes. I asked my dad to take his car during this six month - it is not a hundred percent necessary, but a really good advice to bring a car, if possible! I drove here with a friend of mine who stayed the first weekend with me (it took us 9 hours from Ansbach to Brande). We got a warm welcome with my boss and the first colleagues and went out with them the first evening to a steak house and to the cinema. I felt great but at first insecure with the language. But this changed so quickly after the first few days! The first week I really met a lot of people and all of them asked me out to join them and get to know more people. The difference to other companies is that here are so many foreign people starting each month and all are in the same situation - to get to know people. That makes it much easier to be connected! And this is what is happening the whole time - in the apartment house, at work, while going out: Networking through Siemens, the wind energy field, the countries and cultures. Siemens? organization Siemens Wind Power is a member of Siemens Power Generation since December 2004 when Siemens AG purchased the Danish wind turbine manufacturer Bonus Energy A/S, founded in 1980. The Company designs, sells, manufactures, installs and services high-quality wind turbines with a power output of 1.3 MW, 2.3 MW or 3.6 MW. The head officeand the nacelle plant is located in Brande, Denmark, and all blades for the wind turbines are manufactured in Siemens? own blade plants in Aalborg and Engesvang, Denmark. Siemens Wind Power has offices in the UK, in the US and in Germany and is building up a newblade factory in Fort Madison, Iowa, USA. Siemens is divided into three divisions: Industry, Energy and Health. I was working for the Energy Sector in Siemens Wind Power Renewables within the Procurement department, especially in Processes, Methods and Tools. There are also departments like Sales and Proposals, Engineering, Projects, Service, GD Bildung und Kultur - Programm für lebenslanges Lernen 2/4 Quality, Business Excellence, IT, Communication, Human Resources as well as SAP Projects and rest of Supply Chain. Procurement Our Procurement is ensuring the worldwide supply of parts and materials at the right timing, in the right quality and with the right price. It strives to fulfill 100% of the planned volumes in this high growth situation reduce our quality cost fight the cost increases coming from the supply side. Procurement is involved throughout the whole product life cycle from first ideas to long-term service parts supply and establishes worldwide long-term supplier partnerships. The success is built on three pillars: commodity management, order management and supplier quality management These pillars represent the targets: cost, time and quality. Processes, Methods & Tools is supporting and challenging the Procurement organization towards continuous improvement with regards to: - Aligning and optimizing internal and cross-functional processes - Defining and aligning clear job profiles and task descriptions for the Procurement functions - Developing and implementing a strategy road map for Procurement - Implementing strategic Supplier Management - Supporting the implementation of tools (e.g. SAP, Modias, click4suppliers, SharePoint) - Identifying and developing best-practices My personal experience Before I applied for the internship, I saw process optimization and quality management as a potential field to work after my studies. That?s why I wanted to explore this area. My main project was exactly what I was looking for and I am really happy to have gained experience. Compared to the operational purchasing, it was great to see a more strategic part of the company and what we were heading for in the future. I had a lot of personal contact to my colleagues. Creating new processes and tools had a great influence on their daily work even if it was not that easy to handle the change management and working culture. I loved to work self responsible within this project, defining the roadmap and taking care of issues. But it was fantastic to be in a team as well, to get and give advice and countercheck different point of views. Siemens Wind Power is in an extraordinary situation within the energy market. The growth is incredible and makes it so special to work in this company. You have not just everyday occurrences to deal with, which is very exciting! You meet a lot of people of different nationalities, whereas you can improve your intercultural skills - people you never would have met otherwise. Furthermore these contacts could assist you for your job history in future.
