Polo Park Zurich was founded by Markus Gräff and his wife Irene as well
as Markus Schuler in 1998. The club is located in Ohringen near
Winterthur in the “Zurich Wineland”. Membership of Polo Park Zurich
means that members and their families are linked to an elite global
network opening doors both on and off the polo field. The members of
PPZ have access to a distinguished polo club fraternity and enjoy the
benefits of global camaraderie at international, national and club polo
competitions.
Since 2001, Polo Park Zurich has been organising the Zurich Polo Open,
an international tournament for players with handicaps between 14 and
16. A lot of international top players such as the 10-goaler Marcos Heguy,
Alejandro Alberdi Diaz, Alejandro Agote, Pablo Jauretche, Mathias Mac
Donough, Augustin Garcia Grossi have played in the Open.

Markus Gräff, president of Polo Park Zürich, with his Gräff Capital team
won the Zurich Open three times (in 2003, 2006 and 2008). PPZ has
more members than all polo clubs in Switzerland together. The club has
more than 70 active and stick & ball members and more than one
hundred VIP members.
Since the foundation of the club, the Argentinean professional Francisco
Podesta has been responsible for training the players. Beginners can
take their first steps at PPZ but it is also possible for ambitious players
to play at a high level at the club.
2006 saw the founding of the PPZ Kids Club. The club promotes the
development of polo children with lessons and kids’ tournaments and
has been very successful with this project.

Gstaad plays host for polo at its best!
Polo hat in Gstaad Tradition. 1995 wurde das erste Turnier dort ausgetragen. Seit 2006 hält Pierre Genecand, der bereits das Weltcup-Turnier
in Genf zu einem der weltweit besten Hallen-Events im Pferdesport
gemacht hat, die Zügel in Gstaad in der Hand. Genecands hervorragendes Beziehungsnetz ist Bürge dafür, dass das Budget von 900 000 Franken nie zur Diskussion stand und Sponsoren dem Event über Jahre
hinweg die Treue halten. So engagiert sich beispielsweise Hublot bereits
seit 2008 als Titelsponsor in Gstaad.

Natürlich wünschen sich alle Gäste, dass der Final 2013 ebenso spannend werden wird wie im Vorjahr, als Pablo Jauretche nach einem
Gleichstand von 9:9 nach Ablauf der regulären Spielzeit mit einem
Golden Goal dem Titelsponsor Hublot den Sieg bescherte. Ob es diesmal wieder eine so hauchdünne Entscheidung geben wird, vermag
niemand voraussagen. Sicher aber ist, Gstaad wird einmal mehr mit
erstklassigen Begegnungen und einem tollen Ambiente begeistern.
Lobbyarbeit in Argentinien
Früher spielten die meisten Professionals zuerst das Zurich Open und
in der darauf folgenden Woche in Gstaad. Seit mehreren Jahren ist
Gstaad jedoch der einzige grosse Sommer-Polo-Event in der Schweiz.
Für die Top-Spieler bedeutet dies, dass sie bei fast gleichem Reiseaufwand derzeit nur noch einmal Geld verdienen können. Pierre Genecand
verbringt sechs Monate im Jahr auf seinem Anwesen in Argentinien und
nutzt diese Zeit, um Turniere zu besuchen und intensiv seine Freund-

world of diplomacy and international business
such as Massimo Baggi of the Swiss Consulate
in Milan as well as Attila Tanzi and Renato
Bolongaro, the President and Vice‐President
respectively of the recently established Milano Polo Club. They, along with dressage
champion Maria Milla, deserve much recognition for their hard work and determination in
making the Milano Polo Club a reality.

The Coppa Helvetia (Helvetia Cup) opened the Milan polo season.
The tournament, which was organised by the Consulate General of
Switzerland in Milan and Milano Polo Club in collaboration with the
Horse Guards Association and the Horseback Artillery Regiment
(Associazione Arma di Cavalleria e Reggimento Artiglieria a Cavallo)
and which was attended by the Swiss Ambassador to Italy,
Bernardino Regazzoni, President of the tournament’s honorary
committee, saw four teams captained by Davide Dondena, Davide
Nanni, Alberto Galantino and Massimo Baggi take the field.

Guests – polo aficionados and amateurs of all things elegant – attended
the exclusive event and watched the matches between the four teams
which, after some closely-fought games, saw the Swiss team sweep to
victory with a final score of 8, whilst Maserati came second with 5 goals.
Third and fourth place were awarded to the Il Giornale (9 goals) and the
Hublot team (4.5 goals) respectively.
Hats to match Royal Ascot
The scenes on the field were matched by the scenes off the field with
most of the ladies in attendance following the polo-going tradition of
wearing hats. A generously proportioned black number won the day:
Milanese understatement winning the day over the eccentricity of Royal
Ascot and the like.
Quattroporte and more Maserati models
For the gentlemen present, Maserati, a team sponsor, were showcasing
their latest models such as the new Quattroporte, which were all available for guests to test‐drive. Even the children were kept entertained
with a horse show preformed during intervals by the historic re‐enactment group from Bellinzona, “La Spada nella Rocca”. The Argentinean
specialties on offer were also a great success: wine as well as sweet and
savoury dishes that brought the flavours of Buenos Aires to Milan.

Das Fürstenhaus zu Donaueschingen ist dem
Pferdesport seit Generationen eng verbunden.

als Hobby. In die siebte Auflage des «Fürstenberg
Polo Cups presented by Berenberg» startet das
Erbprinzenpaar vom 12. – 14. Juli mit einem neuen
Konzept. So werden beispielsweise erstmals acht,
statt bisher sechs Teams am Cup teilnehmen.
Seit 2007 veranstaltet das Haus Fürstenberg den renommierten Fürstenberg Polo Cup auf
dem Gelände des Polo Clubs in Donaueschingen. Der Wettbewerb rangiert in der europäischen Medium-Goal Klasse. Mit Spielern aus Deutschland, Frankreich, Italien, der Schweiz
und Argentinien ist der Fürstenberg Cup inzwischen ein fester Bestandteil der internationalen Poloszene und zu einem packenden Ereignis für Spieler, Gäste, die Region und Stadt
geworden.
Der heimische Polo Club Donaueschingen wird durch das Team rund um Erbprinz und Erbprinzessin zu Fürstenberg vertreten. Das Fürstenhaus richtet den Polo Cup dieses Jahr mit einem neu
überarbeiteten Konzept selber aus. So wird es u.a. keinen VIP-Bereich mehr geben, sondern ein
für alle zugängliches Gastronomiezelt, in dem ein Gastronom der Region kulinarische Köstlichkeiten anbietet. Hinzu kommt eine bunte Mischung an Ausstellern, die im neu gestalteten Sponsorenbereich ihre Waren zeigen. Die Palette reicht von Schmuck, über Kleidung, bis hin zur
Innenraumausstattung. Ein Rahmenprogramm zwischen den Spielen ergänzt das Angebot. «Polo
ist ein Mannschaftssport und in einer Mannschaft gibt es keine Barrieren. Wir wollen unsere
Besucher für unseren Sport begeistern und unsere Freude daran mit allen teilen», so Christian

sowohl bei Spielern wie auch unseren Zuschauern geniesst. Unsere

Polo familienfreundlich und regional verankert
Seit Jahren geniesst die Berner Trophy einen ausgezeichneten Ruf. Das Turnier unter der Führung von
Polo Bern-Präsident Jobst Wagner zieht immer aufs Neue Zuschauer – darunter auch viele Familien mit
Kindern – magnetisch an. Austragungsort ist wiederum das Spielgelände von Polo Bern in Wichtrach.

«Wir hatten für die Berner Trophy in diesem Jahr mehr Anfragen von
Teams, als wir berücksichtigen konnten», berichtet Christopher Kiesel
und erklärt, warum Polo Bern sein Turnier auf sechs Mannschaften beschränkt. «Der Club verfügt nur über ein Spielfeld, das turniermässig
genutzt werden kann. Unter diesen Voraussetzungen, ein Turnier mit
acht Teams durchzuführen, ist nicht realistisch. Und wenn man überdies
bedenkt, dass es – wie 2012 der Fall – auch Regenwetter haben kann.
Unser Ziel ist es, den Akteuren und den Zuschauern Polosport unter
guten Bedingungen zu bieten, daher führen wir die Berner Trophy «nur»
mit sechs Teams durch.»
Der gastgebende Club Polo Bern stellt ebenso wie der Legacy Polo Club
zwei Teams. Für die Berner starten als Team Polo Bern Club-Präsident
Jobst Wagner, Lorenz Furrer, Bert Poeckes und Christopher Kiesel. Das
zweite Berner Team bilden Andy Kernen, Dave Long, Walter Cortez und
Stefan Urfer. Ausgetragen wird das Turnier traditionell auf einem Handicap-Niveau +2. Polo Bern setzt bewusst auf ein Low-Goal Turnier mit
nur einem Professional pro Team, um damit in jedem Team drei ambitionierten Amateurspielern die Gelegenheit zu geben, an der Berner
Trophy aktiv dabei zu sein. Die hohe Zuschauerakzeptanz und die exzellente Stimmung, für die die Berner Trophy weit über die Grenzen des
Schweizer Mittellandes bekannt ist, unterstreichen, dass dieses Konzept
aufgeht. Der Zeitplan sowie die definitiven Teamaufstellungen sind
ca. 14 Tage vor dem Event auf der Website www.polobern.ch abrufbar.

Two father-and-son combos played in the Hublot team. In the match
for third prize, Uwe (+1) and Philipp Zimmermann (0), Dietrich (0) and
Moritz Haesen (0) and their 4-goaler Tuky Caivano were defeated, in
spite of their excellent performance, 8:6 by the Premium team [Caesar
Crasemann (+1), Heinrich Dumrath (+3), Nikki Sandweg (+1) and Lukas
Sdrenka (+1)], which, on paper, was one team handicap point stronger.

The atmosphere during Players’ Night was fantastic. 700 guests celebrated raucously in the cow sheds of the Gut Basthorst country estate
until the early hours of the next morning.

Swiss Medium-Goal Polo Championship taking place in June in Veytay / +3 to +6 goals

Veytay Polo Club will, once more, be hosting the Swiss Medium-Goal
Polo Championship. The games are going to start on Thursday
27 June and end on Sunday 30 June. As an official competition of the
Swiss Polo Association, this tournament attracts the best teams from
the various Swiss polo clubs (Polo Park Zurich, Polo Bern,
Legacy Polo Club, Veytay Polo Club etc.).
The “Domaine de Veytay” is situated between Geneva and Nyon on the banks of
Lake Geneva, in a small area called “TerreSainte”, which means “holy land”. It is one of
the most beautiful equestrian facilities in
Europe.
The highlight of the tournament is going to be
Finals Day. As usual, whenever Veytay Polo
Club invites people to one of its famous polo
events, polo fans from all over Switzerland
come to Veytay. There is no doubt that the
team from Veytay Polo Club, who is hosting
the tournament, is one of the favourites.

polo tournaments. Insiders describe it as one of the most enjoyable polo events in all of Europe.
This year, we are going to celebrate its 10th
anniversary on July 27/28 at Hugerlandhof
in Münster. With this special anniversary in
mind, the host and coordinator of Polopicknick Sebastian Schneberger talks about
polo, picnics and personal things.

How did you personally discover polo as a
sport?
One of my cousins once organized a polo
crash course but unfortunately – or rather luckily for me – some players couldn’t make it and
he asked me whether I wanted to fill one of
the spots. This was the first time I came into
contact with polo – and I fell for it immediately.
We had a fantastic coach who, up to now, has
been making regular appearances as an umpire at Polopicknick.
For a couple of years after this event I travelled
from one polo tournament to the next because I was so fascinated by the sport – and,
frankly, also because these polo players really
knew how to party. Once, a player was stuck
in traffic and the team was in need of a substitute. That was my debut.
What gave you the idea of combining polo
and picnics into one event?
I love polo – but as a player I soon noticed that
many people associate polo with a lot of fancy
clichés and elitism. Actually though, polo is first
and foremost one thing: a really tough sport
that offers plenty of action and fun for both
players and spectators.
And that was exactly what we wanted to convey with our tournament. That’s when the idea
was born to give the audience something in
addition to the actual tournament, something
that creates comfort and a relaxing atmosphere: a picnic. Ten years ago though, I did not
in my wildest dreams imagine that this combination would have the kind of resonance that
we get to see here every year.

What about today? Last year’s Polopicknick
drew in round 5,000 visitors. How do you
feel about that?
That is simply crazy, and of course we are all
immensely proud of it. For me personally,
Polopicknick is very important and, of course,
it also takes up quite a lot of time.
Over the years, Polopicknick has grown into
one of the most visited polo tournaments in
Germany. My goal, though, is really not to
crunch numbers; what I am mainly excited
about is the way the audience fills the event
with life. When I walked across the field last
year and saw how people were having picnics
three rows deep along the edges of the polo
field – that was just amazing.
This mixture of a relaxing beach-type atmosphere and a competitive sporting event – that
is what we have always aspired to. I am happy
and excited that we have achieved it.
Since when and for what reason did you
start organizing Polopicknick as a charity
event?
Polopicknick has been a charity event ever
since it was established ten years ago. Back
then, we made a donation to the Münsterbased “Herzenswünsche” foundation for sick
children and we have been donating money to
various other charities ever since. The bottom
line is that Polopicknick started out as a tournament among our friends. Obviously, the
dimension of the event has increased since
then – but the basic idea has remained the
same. For this reason, for us it was never about
making a profit from the event. We use some
of the revenue to cover part of our costs –
everything else goes to charity. We treat our
players in a similar way: they do not need to
pay a starting fee, as is customary for a polo
tournament, but instead we ask them –
although very, very persistently – to make
a donation to a good cause.
POLO
Last year, for example, we donated the earnings to the Peter Foundation for children with
kidney diseases. Our donations helped to fund
two projects. We have frequently supported
the German Board of Trustees for Therapeutic
Horseback Riding. Naturally, this fits in perfectly with the theme of the event. A really
cool thing occurred when one of the players

Board, who uses it for therapeutic horseback
riding.

to describe this feeling. The matches seem to
happen a lot faster. It feels as if you are at the
same time oblivious to everything around you
and yet you notice every detail of your surroundings and the proceedings. I think it is
very similar for everybody who helps us during the event: you only fully realize everything
that happened a couple of days after the event.
We used to also party a lot throughout the
event – we would literally be partying constantly from Wednesday through to Sunday.
Now I have calmed down a little – we still
party but for me, one or two nights are enough.
And now we are approaching the first big

What does Sebastian Schneberger do when

Professionally, I do many things – I have trade
interests in a variety of companies and there is
a lot of administrative work that needs to be
done. Apart from that, I am a family man – I
am proud to say that only a few months ago I
became a Dad.
And what happens in Argentina?
In Argentina, we run a farm cultivating agricultural products such as corn and soy. Argentina
is truly a wonderful country – I thoroughly enjoy the time I spend there. Besides, I am excited about the fact that the new Pope is from
Argentina. I believe and hope that this will be
beneficial for the country.
In Argentina, I can fully live out my passion for
polo. Whenever I am there, I do a lot of riding
and training. Five years ago, I started breeding
my own horses. So everything fits together
perfectly: We have many friends and acquaintances over there who share my passion. Altogether it is much more common there to play
polo. Of course, this means we are always on
the go and lead a very peripatetic life. We
spend a lot of time in the Argentine pampas
and when in Europe we travel between tournaments. (Laughing) always following the sun.

most feel at home?
In the stables - no matter where or when.

We take charity very seriously and we always
examine very thoroughly what projects are
particularly important and meaningful. We do
not have any set criteria though other than the
requirement that the projects should have a
connection with our region.
